Apport de la modélisation hydrologique régionale à la compréhension des processus de crue en zone méditerranéenne / Regional modeling of mediterranean floods : contribution to the understanding of the dominant hydrological processesVannier, Olivier 22 November 2013 (has links)
The hydrological risk associated with flash-floods in the mediteranean area is temporally and spatially variable. Recent works showed the vulnerability of mobile people during floods occurring on small catchments (area < 20 km²). The associated risk, added to the better-known risk related to the overflow of larger rivers, defines the objectives of the present thesis. This work aims at developing a regional distributed hydrological model to study the flood processes over a large range of spatial scales, from small catchments (1 km²) to large regional catchments (> 1000 km²). The model used in this thesis is built within the LIQUID hydrological modeling platform, which allows a modular coupling of the chosen hydrological processes. The model is used without calibration, with the purpose to test different hypotheses on the hydrological functioning of catchments. The studied area is the Cevennes-Vivarais region (south-east of France). The first simulations show a high sensitivity of the model results to soil properties (hydraulic conductivity, thickness), and to the bottom flux boundary condition (deep percolation). A different behavior is observed between catchments located on sedimentary rocks and catchments located in the mountain area, on metamorphic schists. A version of the model which accounts for lateral surface and sub-surface flows is developed, and tested on the Cartaou (0.5 km²) experimental catchment. Preliminary results highlight the importance of lateral flow processes in flood generation at small spatial scales. A streamflow recession analysis is performed to estimate hydraulic and thickness properties of weathered rock horizons, which are not described by regional soil databases. The results show a hierarchy in the estimated parameters, in relation with geology. The weathered rock horizons are implemented in the hydrological model, which is used at the regional scale. Simulations performed over the 2008 year bring out the better results obtained when using the weathered rock layer, for flood events simulations as well as for long-term simulations. The results also show differences between the hydrological behavior of north catchments (Ardèche, Tarn) and south catchments (Cèze, Gardon, Vidourle), which can be linked to the geology.

Efeitos da espacialização da cobertura florestal e da profundidade dos solos na produção de água de uma bacia hidrográfica / Effects of the spatial distribution of forest cover and the soil depth in water yield of a watershedMingoti, Rafael 09 October 2012 (has links)
Several works related to the theme of water production are being made, having in common the association of forest cover with runoff in watersheds. However, no studies were found where the places where this land cover has optimum effect, because it is dependent on climatic and physiographic conditions of each watershed. The objective of this study is to evaluate changes in water yield caused by the spatial distribution of forest cover in relation to the shallow soils in a watershed. The studies were conducted in the watershed \"Ribeirão dos Marins\" in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, through the hydrologic modeling using the distributed model GSSHA. For calibration were used data of meteorological, rainfall and stream flow to the years 1999 and 2000, in addition of the hydraulic conductivity and soil water retention curve obtained in laboratory. SPT tests and water infiltration tests were conducted to determine the thickness of the soils and hydraulic conductivity of the saturated zone (water table) in the watershed. The thickness of the soil was represented by a numerical model, based on those thicknesses measures and the model HAND. The depth of the water table was represented by another numerical model, drawn from the soil thickness and depth of field measured. A new methodology that estimates the Manning coefficient from the CN coefficient was used with satisfactory results. In the processes of calibration and validation of the model, the coefficients showed adequate correlation indexes. Hydrological simulations were made for 15 years in three land cover and land use scenarios, which have been prepared in order to compare the same area of forest cover in different positions of the basin, due to the presence of shallow soils near watercourses. Were analyzed, among the scenarios simulated for the entire period: total flow and baseflow; parameters of hydrographs (in selected events of the series); position of the water table, available water content; and flow duration curves. The results showed that in the study area there is no influence of the position of forest cover in relation to shallow soils to the water yield. Because there are few studies that address the effect of the location of forest cover in water yield is encouraged to conduct further research, among other reasons, for the determination of the priority sites to the reforestation in environmental conservation programs.

Distributed Hydrological Modeling Using Soil Depth Estimated from Landscape Variable Derived with Enhanced Terrain AnalysisTesfa, Teklu K. 01 May 2010 (has links)
The spatial patterns of land surface and subsurface characteristics determine the spatial heterogeneity of hydrological processes. Soil depth is one of these characteristics and an important input parameter required by distributed hydrological models that explicitly represent spatial heterogeneity. Soil is related to topography and land cover due to the role played by topography and vegetation in affecting soil-forming processes. The research described in this dissertation addressed the development of statistical models that predict the soil depth pattern over the landscape; derivation of new topographic variables evaluated using both serial and parallel algorithms; and evaluation of the impacts of detailed soil depth representation on simulations of stream flow and soil moisture. The dissertation is comprised of three papers. In paper 1, statistical models were developed to predict soil depth pattern over the watershed based on topographic and land cover variables. Soil depth was surveyed at locations selected to represent the topographic and land cover variation at the Dry Creek Experimental Watershed, near Boise, Idaho. Explanatory variables were derived from a digital elevation model and remote sensing imagery for regression to the field data. Generalized Additive and Random Forests models were developed to predict soil depth over the watershed. The models were able to explain about 50% of the soil depth spatial variation, which is an important improvement over the soil depth extracted from the SSURGO national soil database. In paper 2, definitions of the new topographic variables derived in the effort to model soil depth, and serial and Message Passing Interface parallel implementations of the algorithms for their evaluation are presented. The parallel algorithms enhanced the processing speed of large digital elevation models as compared to the serial recursive algorithms initially developed. In paper 3, the impact of spatially explicit soil depth information on simulations of stream flow and soil moisture as compared to soil depth derived from the SSURGO soil database has been evaluated. The Distributed Hydrology Vegetation Soil Model was applied using automated parameter optimization technique with all input parameters the same except soil depth. Stream flow was less impacted by the detailed soil depth information, while simulation of soil moisture was slightly improved due to the detailed representation of soil depth.

Hydrological modeling as a tool for sustainable water resources management: a case study of the Awash River BasinTessema, Selome M. January 2011 (has links)
The growing pressure on the world‘s fresh water resources is enforced by population growth that leads to conflicts between demands for different purposes. A main concern on water use is the conflict between the environment and other purposes like hydropower, irrigation for agriculture and domestic and industry water supply, where total flows are diverted without releasing water for ecological conservation. As a consequence, some of the common problems related to water faced by many countries are shortage, quality deterioration and flood impacts. Hence, utilization of integrated water resources management in a single system, which is built up by river basin, is an optimum way to handle the question of water. However, in many areas, when planning for balancing water demands major gaps exist on baseline knowledge of water resources. In order to bridge these gaps, hydro-logical models are among the available tools used to acquire adequate understanding of the characteristics of the river basin. Apart from forecasting and predicting the quantity and quality of water for decision makers, some models could also help in predicting the impacts of natural and anthropogenic changes on water resources and also in quantifying the spatial and temporal availability of the resources. However, main challenges lie in choosing and utilizing these models for a specific basin and managerial plan. In this study, an analysis of the different types of models and application of a selected model to characterize the Awash River basin, located in Ethiopia, is presented. The results from the modeling procedure and the performance of the model are discussed. The different possible sources of uncertainties in the modeling process are also discussed. The results indicate dissimilar predictions in using different methods; hence proper care must be taken in selecting and employing available methods for a specific watershed prior to presenting the results to decision makers. / QC 20110516
