Apport de la modélisation hydrologique régionale à la compréhension des processus de crue en zone méditerranéenne / Regional modeling of mediterranean floods : contribution to the understanding of the dominant hydrological processesVannier, Olivier 22 November 2013 (has links)
Le risque hydrologique associé aux crues rapides survenant en région méditerranéenne est variable dans l'espace et le temps. Des travaux ont montré une vulnérabilité forte des personnes mobiles face aux crues touchant les bassins versants de petite taille (< 20 km²). Le risque hydrologique qui en résulte s'ajoute au risque, mieux connu, associé au débordement des grands cours d'eau. Ce constat définit les enjeux de la modélisation hydrologique régionale mise en place dans ce travail, qui a pour objectif la compréhension des processus de crue de l'échelle du petit bassin versant (1 km²) à l'échelle des bassins régionaux (> 1000 km²). Le modèle utilisé dans cette thèse est construit avec la plate-forme de modélisation LIQUID, qui permet un couplage « à la carte » de modules représentant les processus que l'on souhaite intégrer au modèle. C'est un modèle utilisé sans calibration, dans une démarche de test d'hypothèses de fonctionnement hydrologique des bassins. La zone d'étude est la région Cévennes-Vivarais. Les premières simulations effectuées montrent une sensibilité forte des résultats du modèle aux propriétés des sols (conductivité hydraulique, épaisseurs), ainsi qu'au type de condition limite employée (percolation profonde ou non). Une distinction apparaît entre les comportements en crue des bassins situés sur roche sédimentaire et des bassins schisteux situés sur les reliefs cévenols. Une version du modèle intégrant la représentation des écoulements latéraux de surface et de subsurface est également développée, et déployée sur le bassin expérimental du Cartaou (0.5 km²). Les premiers résultats soulignent l'important rôle joué par ces écoulements à petite échelle. Une méthodologie d'analyse des récessions de débit est mise en place pour l'estimation des propriétés hydrauliques et des épaisseurs des horizons de roche altérée, non-décrits par les bases de données des sols de la région. Les résultats de l'analyse suggèrent une hiérarchie dans les valeurs des paramètres, contrôlée par le type de géologie. Les horizons de roche altérée sont ensuite intégrés dans la version finale du modèle, qui est déployée à l'échelle de la région entière. Les simulations effectuées sur l'année 2008 montrent l'intérêt de la prise en compte de ces épaisseurs de roche altérée, tant pour la simulation des débits en crue que lors des périodes inter-événementielles. Les simulations mettent également en évidence des différences de comportement entre les bassins du nord de la région (Ardèche, Tarn) et ceux du sud (Cèze, Gardon, Vidourle) que l'on peut relier à la géologie. / The hydrological risk associated with flash-floods in the mediteranean area is temporally and spatially variable. Recent works showed the vulnerability of mobile people during floods occurring on small catchments (area < 20 km²). The associated risk, added to the better-known risk related to the overflow of larger rivers, defines the objectives of the present thesis. This work aims at developing a regional distributed hydrological model to study the flood processes over a large range of spatial scales, from small catchments (1 km²) to large regional catchments (> 1000 km²). The model used in this thesis is built within the LIQUID hydrological modeling platform, which allows a modular coupling of the chosen hydrological processes. The model is used without calibration, with the purpose to test different hypotheses on the hydrological functioning of catchments. The studied area is the Cevennes-Vivarais region (south-east of France). The first simulations show a high sensitivity of the model results to soil properties (hydraulic conductivity, thickness), and to the bottom flux boundary condition (deep percolation). A different behavior is observed between catchments located on sedimentary rocks and catchments located in the mountain area, on metamorphic schists. A version of the model which accounts for lateral surface and sub-surface flows is developed, and tested on the Cartaou (0.5 km²) experimental catchment. Preliminary results highlight the importance of lateral flow processes in flood generation at small spatial scales. A streamflow recession analysis is performed to estimate hydraulic and thickness properties of weathered rock horizons, which are not described by regional soil databases. The results show a hierarchy in the estimated parameters, in relation with geology. The weathered rock horizons are implemented in the hydrological model, which is used at the regional scale. Simulations performed over the 2008 year bring out the better results obtained when using the weathered rock layer, for flood events simulations as well as for long-term simulations. The results also show differences between the hydrological behavior of north catchments (Ardèche, Tarn) and south catchments (Cèze, Gardon, Vidourle), which can be linked to the geology.

Efeitos da espacialização da cobertura florestal e da profundidade dos solos na produção de água de uma bacia hidrográfica / Effects of the spatial distribution of forest cover and the soil depth in water yield of a watershedMingoti, Rafael 09 October 2012 (has links)
Vários trabalhos relacionados ao tema produção de água estão sendo realizados, tendo em comum a associação da cobertura florestal com o escoamento em bacias hidrográficas. Entretanto, não existem estudos onde foram verificados os locais onde esta cobertura tem efeito ótimo, pois, este é dependente das condições edafoclimáticas de cada bacia. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as alterações na produção de água ocasionadas pela posição das áreas com cobertura florestal em relação às de solos rasos em uma bacia hidrográfica. Os estudos foram realizados na Bacia Hidrográfica do Ribeirão dos Marins em Piracicaba, SP, Brasil, por meio da modelagem hidrológica utilizando o modelo distribuído GSSHA. Para a calibração foram utilizados dados meteorológicos, fluviométricos e pluviométricos dos anos de 1999 e 2000, além da obtenção, em laboratório, da condutividade hidráulica e da curva de retenção dos solos da bacia. Foram realizadas sondagens SPT e testes de infiltração de água no solo para determinar a espessura dos solos na bacia e a condutividade hidráulica da zona saturada (lençol freático) desta. A espessura dos solos foi representada por um modelo numérico, elaborado a partir das espessuras medidas e da utilização do modelo HAND. A profundidade do lençol freático foi representada por outro modelo numérico, elaborado a partir da espessura do solo e da profundidade deste lençol medida em campo. Uma nova metodologia que, a partir do coeficiente CN, estima o coeficiente de rugosidade de Manning foi utilizada, apresentando resultados satisfatórios. Nos processos de calibração e validação o modelo apresentou coeficientes de índices de correlação adequados. Foram feitas simulações hidrológicas para 15 anos em três cenários de uso e ocupação do solo, que foram elaborados de modo a comparar uma mesma área de cobertura florestal em diferentes posições da bacia, em função da presença de solos rasos nas proximidades dos cursos d\'água. Foram analisados, entre os cenários para todo o período simulado: o escoamento total e o de base; parâmetros dos hidrogramas (em eventos selecionados da série histórica); posição do lençol freático; umidade do solo; e, curva de permanência. Os resultados permitiram concluir que na área de estudo não há influência da posição da cobertura florestal em relação aos solos rasos para a produção de água. Devido à existência de poucos trabalhos a campo e, também, de modelagem que abordem o efeito da localização da cobertura florestal na produção de água, incentiva-se a realização de novas pesquisas, necessárias, entre outras razões, para a determinação dos locais prioritários a reflorestar ou manter florestado em programas de conservação ambiental. / Several works related to the theme of water production are being made, having in common the association of forest cover with runoff in watersheds. The objective of this study is to evaluate changes in water yield caused by the spatial distribution of forest cover in relation to the shallow soils in a watershed. The studies were conducted in the watershed \"Ribeirão dos Marins\" in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, through the hydrologic modeling using the distributed model GSSHA. The results showed that in the study area there is no influence of the position of forest cover in relation to shallow soils to the water yield. Because there are few studies that address the effect of the location of forest cover in water yield is encouraged to conduct further research, among other reasons, for the determination of the priority sites to the reforestation in environmental conservation programs.

Distributed Hydrological Modeling Using Soil Depth Estimated from Landscape Variable Derived with Enhanced Terrain AnalysisTesfa, Teklu K. 01 May 2010 (has links)
The spatial patterns of land surface and subsurface characteristics determine the spatial heterogeneity of hydrological processes. Soil depth is one of these characteristics and an important input parameter required by distributed hydrological models that explicitly represent spatial heterogeneity. Soil is related to topography and land cover due to the role played by topography and vegetation in affecting soil-forming processes. The research described in this dissertation addressed the development of statistical models that predict the soil depth pattern over the landscape; derivation of new topographic variables evaluated using both serial and parallel algorithms; and evaluation of the impacts of detailed soil depth representation on simulations of stream flow and soil moisture. The dissertation is comprised of three papers. In paper 1, statistical models were developed to predict soil depth pattern over the watershed based on topographic and land cover variables. Soil depth was surveyed at locations selected to represent the topographic and land cover variation at the Dry Creek Experimental Watershed, near Boise, Idaho. Explanatory variables were derived from a digital elevation model and remote sensing imagery for regression to the field data. Generalized Additive and Random Forests models were developed to predict soil depth over the watershed. The models were able to explain about 50% of the soil depth spatial variation, which is an important improvement over the soil depth extracted from the SSURGO national soil database. In paper 2, definitions of the new topographic variables derived in the effort to model soil depth, and serial and Message Passing Interface parallel implementations of the algorithms for their evaluation are presented. The parallel algorithms enhanced the processing speed of large digital elevation models as compared to the serial recursive algorithms initially developed. In paper 3, the impact of spatially explicit soil depth information on simulations of stream flow and soil moisture as compared to soil depth derived from the SSURGO soil database has been evaluated. The Distributed Hydrology Vegetation Soil Model was applied using automated parameter optimization technique with all input parameters the same except soil depth. Stream flow was less impacted by the detailed soil depth information, while simulation of soil moisture was slightly improved due to the detailed representation of soil depth.

Hydrological modeling as a tool for sustainable water resources management: a case study of the Awash River BasinTessema, Selome M. January 2011 (has links)
The growing pressure on the world‘s fresh water resources is enforced by population growth that leads to conflicts between demands for different purposes. A main concern on water use is the conflict between the environment and other purposes like hydropower, irrigation for agriculture and domestic and industry water supply, where total flows are diverted without releasing water for ecological conservation. As a consequence, some of the common problems related to water faced by many countries are shortage, quality deterioration and flood impacts. Hence, utilization of integrated water resources management in a single system, which is built up by river basin, is an optimum way to handle the question of water. However, in many areas, when planning for balancing water demands major gaps exist on baseline knowledge of water resources. In order to bridge these gaps, hydro-logical models are among the available tools used to acquire adequate understanding of the characteristics of the river basin. Apart from forecasting and predicting the quantity and quality of water for decision makers, some models could also help in predicting the impacts of natural and anthropogenic changes on water resources and also in quantifying the spatial and temporal availability of the resources. However, main challenges lie in choosing and utilizing these models for a specific basin and managerial plan. In this study, an analysis of the different types of models and application of a selected model to characterize the Awash River basin, located in Ethiopia, is presented. The results from the modeling procedure and the performance of the model are discussed. The different possible sources of uncertainties in the modeling process are also discussed. The results indicate dissimilar predictions in using different methods; hence proper care must be taken in selecting and employing available methods for a specific watershed prior to presenting the results to decision makers. / QC 20110516
