[en] EMULSION FORMATION IN A T-JUNCTION MICROFLUIDIC CHANNEL / [pt] FORMAÇÃO DE EMULSÕES EM UMA JUNÇÃO DE MICRO CANAIS EM T

DEIBI ERIC GARCÍA CAMPOS 12 December 2011 (has links)
[en] In oil production, during secondary recovery, water injection into the reservoir to displace oil towards the production well generates different phenomena, among which is emulsion formation. Emulsions are a problem for the oil industry, because they change the pressure drop in production lines and hardens the process of separating oil-water, generating high operating costs. Emulsion formation in oil production is not yet well understood and it does not only occur in porous media, emulsion formation also occurs during different stages of oil production. This work was focused on the emulsion formation in porous media specifically considering the pore scale two phase flow. A T-junction microfluidic device was used as a model of the union of two pore throats in a porous media. We studied droplet formation in cross-flowing streams, a technique studied and developed in the past decade in the area of microfluidics technologies. Through the injection of two immiscible liquids in the channels of the device, we established a stable droplet formation regime. To study the influence of different variables that govern drop formation, we varied the flow rates of both immiscible phases and their properties, such as viscosity and interfacial tension. The results show that the different regimes observed are not only a function of capillary number, defined based on the continuous phase, as suggested in the literature for microfluidic T junctions with rectangular cross section. In our experiments the cross section of the channel had an elliptic shape and the continuous phase was aqueous, and the characteristics of the dispersed phase had a great influence in the process of drop formation.

Zimmer, Leonardo January 2012 (has links)
The study of kinetic parameters for coal combustion occurs through use of laboratory equipment such as drop tube furnace (DTF). The present work shows the development and analysis of a one-dimensional numerical model of a DTF. The modeling is developed from literature works, and the discrete equations that characterize the flow, heat transfer and coal combustion are programmed in FORTRAN 90 language. The results are compared with a reference model and experimental data, and showed good agreement. A sensitivity study is performed to understand the behavior of coal combustion due to changes of some working parameters of the DTF. The sensitivity analysis showed the versatility of the model and thereby the experiment. From the variation of the O2 concentration, operating temperature and input flow rates a range of results can be obtained. Using the model presented here together with experimental results leads to a detailed study of the kinetic parameters of coal combustion.

The study involved literature review and field research. Through the literature review it was possible to note that Brazilian society faces an education quality issue that has been around for a long time. The change from a quantitative to a qualitative way to address this issue through public policies is notable. The study presents distance learning (DL) as a modality of education capable of helping in reduce the issue of quality education offer. The study addresses the appearance, development, and features of DL and how the internet favored the rise of digital communication, and thus increased the search for DL. DL participation in the Brazilian educational process is increasing more and more. However, just as it happens with traditional education, DL faces a number of problems. One of them – the center of this works attention – is the still high rate of students dropping out. By assessing the main causes to this fact, this work concludes that factors such as the quality of the interaction between students and teachers, as well as the acknowledgement about the quality of the courses offered, should be targeted by all public and private institutions that wish to work with this type of teaching.

Contact damage of ceramics and ceramic nanocomposites

Wade, James January 2017 (has links)
Herein, we study the contact damage performance of two armour ceramics, alumina and silicon carbide, with varying microstructures and one particle-reinforced ceramic nanocomposite, alumina/silicon carbide, in an attempt to understand the microstructural mechanisms that affect plasticity and cracking under quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Quasi-static contact damage was imitated using Vickers indentation over a varying load regime. Numerical analysis of the indentation size effect, performed using the proportional specimen resistance model, allowed the contributions of plastic deformation and cracking to be separated into two individual values. In all three samples, higher levels of surface energy were found to correlate with increased amounts of cracking per unit area of indentation impression. Analytical modelling of crack initiation during Vickers indentation together with quantitative measurements of surface flaw populations revealed that such an increase in cracking damage was the result of higher densities of larger flaws. The hardness of the monolithic ceramics was found vary based on grain size and porosity levels, a smaller average grain size and lower porosity levels resulting in higher hardness values. In the nanocomposite materials, hardening was found to occur with further additions of silicon carbide nanoparticles. Such an effect has been attributed to the increased dislocation densities, as measured using Cr3+/Al2O3 fluorescence spectroscopy, and the impedance of dislocation movement within the lattice due to the presence of silicon carbide nanoparticles. In order to simulate dynamic contact damage, a low velocity, scaled-down drop-weight test was designed and developed. The dynamic contact damage resistance was determined based on the depth of penetration of a blunt indenter. In the monolithic ceramics, the indenter penetration was found to be shallower in materials of higher hardness. However, the nanocomposite materials displayed an opposing trend, the indenter penetration becoming deeper in the samples of higher hardness. The macro-scale fracture patterns produced during drop-weight impacts were seen to vary based on flaw populations and indenter penetration. In certain microstructures, extensive micro-cracking was also observed.

WETTING CHARACTERISTICS OF HERRIN COAL AND ITS APPLICATION FOR IMPROVED DUST CONTROL

Relangi, Durga Devika 01 May 2012 (has links)
This thesis has developed wetting characteristics of coal dust from Herrin coal seam in Illinois for improved respirable coal and quartz dust (< 10µm) control. Wetting characteristics were assessed by a wettability technique called Fixed Time Wettability (FTW) method which simulates the actual underground wetting environment. Immediate roof and immediate floor materials bulk samples were found to be 100% wettable by water alone, whereas coal seam samples were 55-90% wettable. Two variables: contact time between water droplets and dust particles and, the temperature of the water were found to affect the degree of wettability. FTW was carried out at as a function of water temperature (7.2oC to 40.5oC) and contact time (10 to 25 seconds) which increased wettability 2-18% and 8-32%, respectively. In addition, the wetted and un-wetted samples collected from wettability experiments were subjected to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and particle size distribution analyses. It was found that particles are irregular in shape in both wetted and un-wetted fractions and some agglomeration of fine particles was observed in a few un-wetted fraction samples. The concept of increased contact time was incorporated in engineering controls by increasing the wet scrubber filter screen inclination (which is a function of the screen surface area). The filter screen inclination was minimizing the pressure drop across it using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. It was found that 60 degree (with respect to the vertical) would provide minimal pressure drop and should be considered for implementation. Additional research should be conducted on assessing selective wetting of different particle sizes of coal and quartz in airborne dust, developing data on wettability as a function of particle size and implementing the developed concepts such as contact time and temperature in the field for improved dust control.

[en] ANALYSIS OF DROP BREAKUP PHENOMENON OF DILUTED OIL IN WATER EMULSIONS IN TURBULENT FLOW / [pt] ANÁLISE DO FENÔMENO DE QUEBRA DE GOTA DE EMULSÕES DE ÓLEO EM AGUA DILUÍDAS EM ESCOAMENTO TURBULENTO

JOHANN HUMBERTO PENUELA MUNOZ 07 November 2018 (has links)
[en] A high-speed camera has been used to visualize the drop breakup process at turbulent conditions in a rotor - stator mixer and through an orifice in a pipe. Two special cases were considered: the breakup of diluted emulsions and the breakup of single oil droplets. Two mineral oils of moderate viscosity were dispersed in two different continuous phases, tap water and a continuous phase formed by a mixture of substitute ocean water and the anionic surfactant STEOL CS-330 (Stepan Company). For the case of breakup in the rotor - stator mixer, two mechanisms were identified. An initial fragmentation is caused by the combination of the vortex (generated by the circular motion of the rotor) and the jet zone emerging from the stator holes. The second mechanism is a mechanical breakup caused by the high shear stresses that droplets suffer in the rotor - stator gap. In the case of breakup through an orifice in a pipe, it was shown that breakage only occurs downstream of the restriction and takes place at a certain distance from the edge of the orifice. At this breakup length, the radial velocity gradient in the flow is large enough to overcome the resistance stresses (exerted by the droplet) and produce the rupture of the droplet. These results were in agreement with previous observations made Galinat et al. (2005) for the case of drop breakup through an orifice plate. However, from the observations made in this work, it was possible to conclude that the orifice length does not influence the breakup mechanisms. In addition, visualization has allowed to analyze the relative influence of interfacial tension and dispersed phase viscosity for both cases. Experimental values for the maximum stable drop diameter were obtained for the breakup of diluted oil-in-water emulsions in both studied cases. Analysis of the data revealed that maximum stable drop sizes were in the inertial sub range, characterized exclusively by the energy dissipation rate per unit mass, Epsilon. A linear mechanistic model for the inertial sub-range, based in Kolmogorov s theory of isotropic turbulence, was developed to aid in data interpretation and to provide a basis for correlation. The model was adjusted to experimental data using a nonlinear optimization tool based in the generalized reduced gradient code (GRG2), and its precision was calculated from the root mean squared difference between experimental and predicted data. Good predictions were obtained for the breakup in the mixer; however, this was not the case for the breakup through the orifice. The relative low precision of the model used to correlate the breakup through the restriction lied in the lack of consideration of the time scale required for the breakup. In addition, a linear curve fitting based in a power law model, showed that interfacial effects drive the breakup process in the restriction.

Kvantifiering av simulerat regn i vindtunnel

Åsberg, Mathias January 2018 (has links)
The wind tunnel operated by Sport Tech Research Centres,   are a unique facility to conduct research on athletic practitioners and their   equipment. The advanced systems in the wind tunnel allows for research and   testing of materials and product in a realistic environment. Since the   construction of the wind tunnel a rain system was fitted. This system is not   measured for important factors and no knowledge of the simulated rainfall   properties or similarities to naturally occurring rain exists. The aim of this work was to perform measurements of   the existing rainfall system with regards to size and falls speed of the   droplets. The purpose was also to compare the measure rain properties to   scientific models describing natural rainfall. The goal of the work was to   get a foundation of the existing rain in the wind tunnel. The tests were performed with an optic disdrometer   that measured the falling water particles with a laser. The disdrometer   measured size and fall speed of the droplets. The tests were carried out on   different heights in the wind tunnel, the rain was also investigated at   varying water pressure and wind speeds. The result shows that the simulated rainfall had   lower speed relative to the measured drop size high in the tunnel. Fall speed   of droplets low in the tunnel showed more according to the model’s   description of a natural rain fall speed. Drop size distribution was shown   not to be consistent with natural rainfall. The distribution shows a higher   amount of large drops than is naturally occurring. Rainfall intensity was   measured to 62 mm/h as lowest which is very high compared to natural rain.   Based on these parameters the simulated rain is not a naturally occurring   rainfall. / <p>Betyg: 180803</p>

Rohloff, Claudia Cristina January 2017 (has links)
Coal is the main fuel in thermoelectric generation in many countries in the world, in spite of its well known being one of the main sources of greenhouse gases. On the other hand, wood biomass is a renewable energy source, associated to a short life cycle of the carbon dioxide produced in its oxidation processes. This study aimed at comparing the reactivity, in combustion atmosphere, of two coals, a Colombian one and a Brazilian one, as well as of a charcoal, by means of a drop tube furnace (DTF). A DTF consists in a vertical cylindrical reactor, capable of mantaining a homogeneously heated section along which combustion of solid fuel particles take place in similar heating rate and temperature conditions as those that are found in the operation of industrial-scale pulverized coal boilers. A DTF was built in the Combustion Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The reactor measures 1340 mm in testing height and can be heated to provide inner temperatures up to 1200ºC. Combustion of samples of the selected fuels was evaluated in terms of the evolution of burnout, gas temperature and composition of the gas and of the char collected in a set of positions along the DTF axys. As main results, it was observed that the reactivity of the Colombian coal is higher than that of the other fuels all along the DTF height. Similar results for burnout were found for the Brazilian coal and the charcoal. Emissions were also investigated. It was observed that combustion of the charcoal releases more CO in the initial portion of the particles displacement inside the reactor. Emission of NO was found to be higher in the combustion of the Colombian coal as well as in the combustion of the charcoal, accomopanying the higher nitrogen content in the composition of the two fuels. Emissions of SO2 were also proportional to sulphur content in the fuels, so that the higher amounts of this species were found in the combustion of the Brazilian coal, followed by the Colombian coal and the charcoal. Temperature measurements were made with a probe specifically designed for that purpose. It was verified that the DTF provides a satisfactory testing length as long as combustion takes place. Discussion of the results includes the calibration of the dosing apparatus.

Fragmentation de métal liquide dans l'eau / Fragmentation of molten metal in water

Hadj Achour, Miloud 06 December 2017 (has links)
The phenomenon of dispersion/fragmentation of corium remains one of the most complex and uncertain elements of nuclear accident modeling. In order to validate the sub-mesh models implemented in the MC3D software (developed by IRSN), an experiment without vapor explosion has been conceived. It consists of a low-melting liquid metal jet (Field metal) interacting with a stagnant water in a large tank. This thesis is divided into two parts ; the first one is related to the study of the so-called secondary fragmentation of an isolated drop of Field’s metal, for low Weber number. To this end, we designed an experimental device, GaLaD (drop-on-demand droplet generator). In this part, a literature review on liquid-liquid fragmentation is conducted with a quantitative comparison of the secondary fragmentation for a single drop in the liquid-liquid and the gas-liquid cases. The second part concerns the study of a jet of Field’s metal. For this purpose, GaLaD was modified, so as to be able to generate small jet of liquid metal in water. The obtained results allowed a better understanding of the physical phenomena involved in two-phase turbulent jet fragmentation. In the framework of this thesis, an additional experimental device designated by JaLaD is developed. Subsequently, this device will be dedicated to the study of metal jet in water and must allow us to reinterpret the data of classical experiments via new innovative measurement techniques
