You’re Not a Superhero, or Even an Artist! How the “Alias” Comic Book Holds the Answers

Wang, Lorraine 01 January 2016 (has links)
Superhero comic books are not art, and middle-aged, non-white women are not superheroes. I seek to disprove both of these assumptions, and I use the "Alias" comic books from 2001-2004 for my argument.

ABSTRACT - This research focuses on the formation of collections of digital books in university public libraries of Brazil. This recent book´s typology seems to impose new elements that should be considered when planning its introduction in collections. These new elements cover a range of issues that affect not only the chain of the organization operation, processing and retrieval of information, but it lies at the earlier stages starting with the selection and acquisition of digital collections. Take as the universe of research the Brazilian´s university public libraries that driven by the advancement of technological resources, needs to create an innovative environment for the development of research providing for users new collections and access facilities which leads us to analyze them in order to elucidate the variables in the process. Wonders how and on what basis (politics and guidelines) are held selection of collections of digital books purchased by public universities in Brazil to underpin these choices. Thus, the aim of the research is to ascertain the parameters selection of electronic books for inclusion in the public collections of university libraries, if it policies includes digital resources for the formation of these collections. The research can be classified as descriptive in a qualitative and quantitative approach. The technique of data collection that best suited the proposal was the survey method, using as an instrument of data collection structured questionnaire via web portals and mapping in the Universities. From the theoretical referential was verified that the digital book market in Brazil is booming, but the provision of technical and scientific books in Portuguese to serve the needs of academic libraries, is still limited. From the data analysis it was found that most federal public universities, offer collections of digital books in two ways: subscription and perpetual access, whose contents are partially selected by the universities. These books are available in digital platforms of publishers or aggregators / distributors of content, which are also responsible for the access, storage and control of copyrights, although in some cases, the custody of the books is in the university. There was a symmetry in the results for the collection development policy, half stated that the collection of electronic books meets policy and the other half backorders.

Sustainability and recycling in fifteenth-century manuscripts

Ryley, Hannah January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the sustainability of fifteenth-century manuscripts. It analyses the durability of manuscripts, and the ways in which people recycled and reused their books. During the long fifteenth-century (here, 1375-1530), book production in England flourished, driven by increased demand for books. Yet while the fast-developing commercial book trade produced new books in great quantity, significantly, older books were also sustained, recycled and reused. Although there is awareness within medieval scholarship of recycled manuscript components, such as flyleaves, no sustained study has yet been undertaken into recycled and reused materials in fifteenth-century manuscripts, or into book production's practices and processes of reuse. In addition, previous book history studies of recycling have focused on the book material reuse that followed the Dissolution. By contrast, this study offers a broader exploration of sustainable practices in fifteenth-century manuscript culture, as well as in-depth analysis of manuscript examples, to argue that book producers made and reused books in sustainable ways. The introduction outlines key concepts and relevant scholarship, such as studies that follow the material turn, and ecocriticism. The four chapters that follow address sustainability from different angles, focusing primarily on the evidence both in and written on books themselves. Chapter 1 explores the craftsmanship of parchment- making through contemporary recipes and physical evidence in manuscripts. Chapter 2 presents case studies of parchment reused sustainably in books, as off-cuts, quire guards, flyleaves, pastedowns, limp covers, and palimpsests. Chapter 3 surveys spaces reclaimed in books for opportunistic mark-making, in the form of doodles, jottings, and short verses. Chapter 4 presents three surveys of second-hand books and the inscriptions written onto their leaves. A conclusion draws together the findings. This thesis augments and nuances current scholarship by arguing that fifteenth-century reuse and recycling of book materials were customary aspects of book production and symptomatic of more widespread sustainability in manuscript culture.

A Beginner Method Book for Oboists: A Proposal

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this project was to create a beginner-level oboe method book that provides equal attention to both the instrumental and musical concepts necessary for a beginner oboist. The existing literature for beginning oboe students focuses on two specific settings: full band classrooms, where students are playing and learning the instruments together, and private lesson settings, where one or a group of oboe students are focused on learning to play the oboe. Books written for band settings typically focus on teaching the students how to function as a part of the band, with extensive coverage of musical concepts; conversely, books for private lessons often assume a basic level of musical knowledge by the student, and focus heavily on how to play the instrument. This project provides the basis for a new book that combines these elements into a document that both band and private instructors would be able to use. I began my project by collecting all of the extant beginner-level method books for the oboe, dividing them into those for band settings and those for lesson settings. I then created a detailed survey to analyze each book's contents so that in the new book I might address any and all shortcomings in the existing literature. I then distilled the results of this survey into charts, so that any teacher could look at the contents of each book and see how said book fits within the results. Once this was finished, I created an outline for the new method book, listing the contents of the front material, lessons, and back material. My outline sequences the musical and instrumental material together, providing students with all of information necessary to become a successful beginning oboist. I stopped short of selecting music or creating the book's layout, but my goal is to publish the completed book within the next year. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2014

As possíveis configurações do livro nos suportes digitais / The possibilities of the book’s configurations in digital format

Sehn, Thaís Cristina Martino January 2014 (has links)
This research has as its purpose to map out the artifacts so-called ‘digital books’ nowadays. They were characterized from a crossing between printed books main specificities and those related to digital environment very own resources. The research methodology applied to it was of two kinds: literature review and an observational study of the object of study. A historical overview was unearthed in order to achieve the intended purpose, identifying the characteristics linked to the notion of ‘book’, taking into account changes that have taken place stemming from its materiality. Given this perception it was possible to understand the remediation of the print book proposed in e-books, the ones accessed through e-readers and tablets mainly. Identification and registration of the latest developments in digital books resources were another point covered in this work. From a literature review standpoint, interactivity, multimedia and hypertext potentialities were crossexamined. Moreover, there had been discussed some of the alternatives to offer readers proximity and different ways to interact with the work content through the use of cited resources. Still, before realizing the artifact analysis, a more in-depth study of e-book materiality was needed. That is, to perceive how hardware, content and software interact among themselves restricting the possibilities that might be made available to the reader. The singularities of the following macro categories: Identification, Access, Functionalities, Potentialities of the digital environment and the approach of the printed book concept (remediation) to graphic project were evaluated in the table analysis. After an empirical and theoretical study, it was realized that book is an artifact with flexible properties, thus, a definition was set forth based upon a series of principles that together characterize this type of publication, regardless of being in printed or digital form. Therefore, we came to the conclusion the e-book is a digital content with the same features of a printed book and the former can exploit digital media resources such as sound, video, animation and interactivity besides virtually text and image. We were also able to identify through the artifacts primary features that were under analysis the following types of digital books: customized, PDF, digitized, multimedia and interactive.
