The incorporation of web technologies by university libraries in the Southern African Development Community to implement user-centred services

Ndinoshiho, Joseph Megameno 03 April 2023 (has links) (PDF)
University libraries exist to support the strategic objectives of their parent universities by providing access to quality and relevant scholarly and scientific information in support of the curricula and research programmes. In fulfilling their core functions, university libraries are increasingly adopting an array of web technologies to deliver quality services to their user community. The aim of this study was to investigate the incorporation of web technologies into the services of university libraries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in order to develop a user-centred model for the deployment of web technologies in university libraries. To achieve this aim, the study was underpinned by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The proliferation of information in the electronic environment, along with increased user preference to access digital information, has made the incorporation of web technologies in university libraries a necessity, not an option. These transformative developments are accompanied by increased user demands for user-centred services. These advances justify the significance of this study, as well as the user-centred model developed for the incorporation of web technologies in university libraries which constitutes the original contribution of the research to scientific knowledge. This study falls within a pragmatic paradigm and followed a mixed method research approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research strategies in data collection and analysis. The population of this study comprised university libraries in the SADC member states whose language of communication is English. Since this population was fairly small in size, quantitative data were collected from the entire population using a questionnaire. Microsoft Excel 2016 was used to analyse the quantitative data. Qualitative data were also collected from librarians via interviews with purposive sampling being used to select the participants. Another set of the population involved undergraduate and postgraduate students from selected universities from whom qualitative data were collected by means of focus group discussions. Purposive sampling was used to select participants in the focus group discussions. Qualitative data were analysed following the thematic qualitative analytical approach. The findings of this study showed that the majority of university libraries in the SADC region have incorporated numerous web technologies for information discovery, for information sharing and promoting library services, for interactive library services, and for content management. The findings also revealed that the UTAUT constructs, namely, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions have had a major influence on the incorporation of web technologies by university libraries, and on librarians' and students' use of these tools. A few university libraries were found to be ill-equipped with information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and equipment to facilitate the use of web technologies. This study further established that the UTAUT constructs and the Library 2.0 construct of user-centredness can inform the development of a user-centred model for the incorporation of web technologies by university libraries. The study revealed that the majority of students consider web technologies to be vital tools, enabling them to access study and research information, and to share and publish information with their fellow students, their lecturers and librarians. The study culminated in the design of a user-centred model for the incorporation of web technologies into university libraries services.

The Effect of Remote Storage on the Use of Books

Michael T. Peper 4 April 2008 (has links)
Remote storage has become an increasingly popular response to the overcrowding of open-stack areas in academic libraries. While many institutions have chosen this option and there has been much discussion about administration of such facilities, its impact on patrons is still unclear. Some potential user limitations of remote storage considered by this study are delayed retrieval, loss of browsability, and the barrier of making a retrieval request. The current study was conducted at the Chemistry and Art Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It observed the use of materials that had been selected for transfer to remote storage, where half of these selected materials were transferred to remote storage and the other half remained on open library stacks. After an average of approximately two months of observation, none of the selected books had circulated, suggesting that their selection for remote storage was appropriate.

Digital reference services in university libraries of Pakistan

Younus, Muhammad January 2014 (has links)
The development of information and communication technologies, and wide spread of the Internet and its associated technologies have brought about tremendous changes in the reference department of academic libraries, and in the attitudes and expectations of both information professionals and users. Many academic libraries across the globe have embraced Web technologies to fulfil users reference needs in a digital environment. This study aimed to investigate and analyse digital reference services (DRS) in university libraries in Pakistan. It focused on the nature and level of DRS, technologies used for the provision of the service, usage, staffing, marketing, funding, ICT infrastructure available for the service, and looked at the issues faced by academic libraries in implementing and managing the service. A mixed methods research approach combining both quantitative and qualitative methods was employed to achieve the aim and objectives of the study. The quantitative data for the study were collected through an online survey. A total of eighty five university libraries (both in public and private sectors) from all the four provinces, the federal capital and Azad Jammu & Kashmir participated in the survey. The quantitative data were supplemented by the qualitative data which were gathered through semi-structured interviews with the heads of fifteen leading university libraries. Findings suggest that DRS is at an early development stage in university libraries in Pakistan, with a small number of libraries offering the service. Most of the academic libraries which have implemented this cutting-edge service, are large libraries equipped with good human and technological resources. The libraries have mostly developed asynchronous digital reference systems by employing e-mail and web forms. The usage of the service is lower than that of in-person reference in academic libraries due to factors, such as libraries failure to effectively market the service, lack of ICT skills among users, lack of ICT facilities available for users. It was found that the libraries lack skilled and competent LIS professionals to staff the service. Factors contributing to the scarcity of skilled human resources in academic libraries include the lack of in-house training for DRS, shortage of continuing professional development courses in the country, and deficiencies in LIS curricula offered by the country s library schools. A number of issues which affect the implementation and management of DRS in academic libraries have been identified. They include: scarcity of competent human resources; access to appropriate digital resources; unavailability of suitable software for DRS; financial constraints; lack of ICT facilities; absence of a digital reference policy; lack of ICT application; paucity of resources; electricity supply; inadequate physical facilities; lack of local research and literature on DRS.

Evaluation and improvement on service quality of Chinese university libraries under new information environments

Fan, Yue Qian January 2018 (has links)
The rapid development of information technology in the recent years has added a range of new featuresto the traditional information environment, which has a profound impact on university library services and users. The Quality of Service parameter in library services has reached a broader consensus, which directly reflects customer satisfactions and loyalty. Exploring the evaluation frameworks for service quality in university libraries cannot be undermined in this context. Besides, existing evaluation frameworks of service quality of university library services are also facing numerous challenges due to their imperfections. Thus, there is an urgency and necessity to explore and enhance the efficiencies of the evaluation frameworks of service quality. To this end, this thesis conducts a systematic analysisof evaluation frameworks with a motivation of identifying the core components that needs enhancements for achieving effective service quality in Chinese university libraries through empirical methods. Furthermore, the inferences extracted from the analysis has been exploited to provide suitable recommendations for improving the service quality of university libraries.

Information services to tenant companies in technology parks : Australia and Thailand.

Premkamolnetr, Nongyao January 1998 (has links)
This thesis investigates the most appropriate and effective ways in which a university library can interact with tenant companies and the staff in a technology park. Tenant company staff members in five Australian Technology Parks were surveyed about their information needs, information use, and information seeking behaviour as well as their attitudes towards university libraries which offered services to them. Three of the five Australian Technology Parks had formal relationships with universities and their libraries. The librarians of these universities were interviewed on their attitudes towards the provision of information services to the technology park community, as well as the information services they offered to this group of clients. The research results indicated that most of the respondents who were engaged in R&D areas accessed university libraries' collections for technical information and valued their services and the professional help of the librarians, whereas those in other areas, particularly marketing and sales, did not place as high a value on these services. One striking finding from the research was that the respondents in the latter group use the Internet as their preferred first source of information, not informal personal contact as been expected and indicated in previous studies. A contributing factor to low use of the university libraries was poor promotion of library services.A major objective of the research was to obtain information on the relevance of the Australian data to developing and offering services to tenants in a new technology park in Thailand. Results drawn from the Australian data was used to form a model for the interaction between university libraries and tenant company staff in Thai technology parks. The model was tested through interviews with Thai sample group and was then fine-tuned to meet Thai economic and social ++ / conditions prior to proposing it for use in Thailand. This research indicated that many aspects of Thai university libraries need to be adjusted in order to successfully provide effective information services to the technology park community. These include clearly defining library policies towards the tenants, increasing and improving avenues of access to library services, improving library performance and services, increasing promotion and marketing, supporting personnel development policies, and creating partnerships with other organisations.

An Experiment with Art Library Users, Signs, and Wayfinding.

Abigail R. Carr 2006 April 1900 (has links)
This paper discusses the effects of stack end signage on user wayfinding success in searches in academic libraries. Site visits to the Chapel Hill Public Library and the Cameron Village Branch Library provided models for test signage for the study, as did the available literature on wayfinding and effective library signage. A three week study was conducted to survey the effects of three different iterations of signage on the success of subjects performing test searches—the subjects used the UNC Chapel Hill online catalog and the posted signage to locate materials in the Sloane Art Library. The results of the study were evaluated qualitatively and suggestions were made for further study and suggestions for elements of effective academic library signage were made.
