Governance and economics of smart cities: opportunities and challengesAnand, Prathivadi B., Navio-Marco, J. 11 October 2018 (has links)
Yes / This editorial introduction to this special issue provides an overview and a conceptual framework of governance and economics of smart cities. We begin with a discussion of the background to smart cities and then it focuses on the key challenges for consideration in smart city economics. Here it is argued that there are four dimensions to smart city economics: the first is regarding the scale of global market for smart cities; the second issue concerns data to be used for smart city projects; the third concerns market competition and structure and the fourth concerns the impact on local economy. Likewise, smart city governance framework has to be considered a layered and multi-level concept focusing on issues of transparency and accountability to the citizens.

Järnvägssektorn som governancenätverk / The Swedish Railway Sector as a Governance NetworkMalmberg, Pär January 2013 (has links)

Review of governance in the South African mortgage origination industry and suggested framework for a governance bodyBlom, Lyal Ross 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA) -- Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The elements of concern around ethics and how individuals conducted business were highlighted as key contributors to the economic recession experienced globally, especially after the sub-prime crisis in 2008. The subject matter of corporate governance and good governance has therefore become highly relevant.
South Africa, although affected by the economic crisis, was not as affected as the United States and most first-world and developed countries, due to strong legislation and governance within our financial frameworks. Although South Africa was not exempt from the fallout, and our real estate market also entered an economic recession, the impact was far less than in the United States and other developed countries. This research study explores one of the elements or stakeholders of the real estate market, namely, the mortgage origination industry and the lack of a governance framework for this industry. The advantages and benefits to the industry should a framework be adapted are investigated.
The mortgage origination industry in South Africa, and even globally, is a relatively new business concept, which emerged approximately ten years ago. Most countries have adopted a governance and regulatory framework; however, South Africa has not implemented an accepted industry body that has been properly scoped and implemented and is adding material benefit.
The National Association of Mortgage Originators (NAMO) was a body established under the pretences of becoming the regulatory framework; however, this has fallen well short of expectations and has been subject to much ridicule and lacks any integrity.
In reviewing the various governance models across the globe and even more specifically the mortgage industry frameworks, this report presents a proposed framework, and argues that the appropriate model in the South African environment would be one of self-regulation, as opposed to a legislated framework. The benefits and advantages of the self-regulated framework outweigh the legislative frameworks and are presented as the appropriate model for the South African mortgage origination industry.

The Chinese corporate governance mode : adapt or adopt?Schiebe, Karl Friedrich January 2014 (has links)
This thesis seeks to analyse the development and determinants of the corporate governance framework in China. With a focus on the emerging corporate governance framework, the relation between regulation, firms and the single-party state is examined. Corporate governance failures have not been a significant area of study in the governance literature. The analysis of recent high-level corruption cases in the oil industry provides evidence for the persisting influence of the Party-state on governance through personal networks and family ties at the nexus of state and economy. The findings suggest that there are significant underlying constraints which limit the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework. State shareholding, agency chains and a subservient legal system with a parallel legal sphere all impair the new corporate governance system. While a basic system is in place, improving governance remains difficult. An overhaul of the current constellation and second wave of SOE reforms is deemed necessary. / published_or_final_version / China Development Studies / Master / Master of Arts in China Development Studies

Relays and Marathons: The Effects of Succession Choice Surrounding CEO Turnover AnnouncementsIntintoli, Vincent January 2007 (has links)
This study examines marathon successions, which I define as instances where a permanent successor is not chosen at the time of a CEO departure. Marathons have become increasingly prevalent over the last ten years and represent the majority of succession decisions surrounding forced turnovers from 1995-2005. Firms implementing marathon successions around forced turnovers have strong internal governance structures, as measured by board size, director ownership, percentage of outside directors, and dual Chairman/CEO appointments. In addition, I find little evidence supporting the argument that extending the succession process through the use of a marathon leads to increases in uncertainty and/or agency costs in the form of horizon problems. Lastly, I find positive and significant announcement returns for forced marathon successions. These results provide insight into the succession process and the role of strong internal corporate governance in evaluating and implementing succession decisions.
