Physics-based approach to detect metal-metal contact in the hydrodynamic bearing of a planetary transmission

Cubillo, Adrian January 2016 (has links)
Health condition monitoring, commonly referred as Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) for fleets or vehicles, studies the current and future health state of a system. Health monitoring techniques based on data driven approaches have proven successful in several areas and are easily scalable; however they do not rely on the understating of the physics of failure; whereas Physics-based Model (PbM) approaches require expert knowledge of the failure modes and are based on the understanding of the component behaviour and degradation mechanisms. The development of IVHM is particularly challenging for legacy aircraft due to the restrictive regulations of the aerospace industry. This thesis proposes a novel PbM technique to detect metal-metal contact in hydrodynamic bearings. The planetary transmission of an aircraft’s Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) is used as a case study. Research on the detection of metal-metal contact in hydrodynamic bearings has focused on data driven approaches using vibration or acoustic emissions rather than on PbMs. The proposed technique estimates metal-metal contact by modelling the physical phenomena involved in the failure mechanism and only the speed, load and temperature are required as inputs, all of them available in the IDG and not requiring any additional sensors. The study of metal-metal in hydrodynamic bearings in the field of tribology has focused on mixed lubrication models of the whole bearing, or computational models accounting for local effect under the hydrodynamic lubrication region. In addition to the IVHM technique, this thesis contributes to the field of tribology by proposing a computational mixed lubrication model capable of studying metal-metal contact locally along the lubricated surface of the bearing. Experimental results of a plain journal bearing have been used to validate the PbM and a replica of the transmission of the IDG has been tested to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed technique at detecting metal-metal contact.

Reis, Douglas Ricardo Herminio. January 2011 (has links)
Ao final do trabalho, espera-se demonstrar que a inflexão do José de Alencar cronista para o folhetinista e, posteriormente, romancista, deu-se tanto na adoção de procedimentos ficcionais na construção da crônica como na transposição da materialidade da crônica para o romance / Abstract: What is now called chronicle has its dated appearance of the year 1836, published the first issue of the French newspaper La Presse, by Émile de Girardin, within the bottom of the page of the newspaper designated as feuilleton among us called serial. In this sense, the first exponent of this generation was José de Alencar, who wrote for weekly for the Correio Mercantil and Diário do Rio de Janeiro, from 1854 to 1855, through Ao correr da pena's section. This study aims to follow the historical and cultural transformations of the feuilleton in Brazil, with specific focus on one of our greatest writers, José de Alencar. The survey will check, in the chronicle, the development of the literariness of the prose of José deAlencar, but also the way he has adapted his prose to the text of the variety-feuilleton type, which occupied the footers of the newspapers. To achieve these goals, will be used to support the theoretical studies of Michel Espagne on models of cultural transfer, creating a new system from a previous model assimilated, as well as the work of Marie-Eve Thérenty on relations between literature and journalism in the nineteenth century, centered on the dialectical tension between literature and press, which results in the form of the feuilleton and its use by different writers in different countries, including the use of the format by José de Alencar, on Brazil / Mestre

Avaliação da qualidade de vida do portador de hemofilia e implementação do diário de infusão / Assessment of the quality of life of hemophilia patients and implementation of the infusion diary

Thiara Guimarães Heleno de Oliveira Poncio 08 May 2018 (has links)
Patients with hemophilia are predisposed to bleeding, both post-traumatic as spontaneous, occurring mainly in the joints (hemarthrosis) and, when recurrent, they may contribute to the establishment of hemophilic arthropathy, which makes the disease potentially disabling and painful, and considerably affects the quality of life (QoL) of patients with the disease. Evaluate the QoL of these patients gives us the subsidy to provide measures that aim to improve the assistance provided and the patients well-being. In this regard, through an important edition of the infusion journal it is possible to follow the care provided. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of life of hemophilia patients followed by the HEMOMINAS Foundation clinic in Manhuaçu, using specific tools and implement the use of an Infusion Diary as a strategy to increase assistance. This is a descriptive quantitative study. For the evaluation of QoL, it was used the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) proposed by the WHO. The tools include: a sociodemographic questionnaire; Haem-A-Qol; Haemo-Qol; HAL, pedHAL; HJHS e FISH. 30 male patients with hemophilia joined the study, which represented 90.9% of the eligible sample. In patients older than 18 years (n = 24), the Haem-A-Qol average score was 53.39. In the HAL, the average was 67.26. In the HJHS, the average score was 37.33. In the FISH, the average score was 25.96. In patients under 18 (n = 06), the Haemo-Qol was answered by patients and their parents. In the questionnaire answered by the patient the average score was 50.36, and in the parents\' score was 55.16. In PedHAL, the average score of the patients was 88.59 and their parents 83.15. The average score in the HJHS was 5.67. Regarding FISH, all patients under 18 years of age (n = 06) reached a maximum score and performed all activities without assistance. The journal of infusion was built and implemented as a tool to enhance the assistance, aiming to stimulate the progressive improvement of the quality of life. The quality of life of patients followed was different, younger ones with better results. The reality of hemophilia management is challenging. It is necessary to reorient care, the focus should not be in the disease, it is necessary to look for the individual, who should be fully assisted in the holistic way.

Computing a journal meta-ranking using paired comparisons and adaptive lasso estimators

Vana, Laura, Hochreiter, Ronald, Hornik, Kurt 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
In a "publish-or-perish culture", the ranking of scientific journals plays a central role in assessing the performance in the current research environment. With a wide range of existing methods for deriving journal rankings, meta-rankings have gained popularity as a means of aggregating different information sources. In this paper, we propose a method to create a meta-ranking using heterogeneous journal rankings. Employing a parametric model for paired comparison data we estimate quality scores for 58 journals in the OR/MS/POM community, which together with a shrinkage procedure allows for the identification of clusters of journals with similar quality. The use of paired comparisons provides a flexible framework for deriving an aggregated score while eliminating the problem of missing data.

Use of CONSORT Criteria for Reporting Randomized Controlled Trials in Pharmacy Journals

Craft, Emalee, Ogumbo, Rachel, Slack, Marion January 2012 (has links)
Class of 2012 Abstract / Specific Aims: To explore whether publishing requirements for human-centered randomized control trials, particularly the CONSORT criteria, have any relationship to impact as measured by the Journal Citation Reports ™ Impact Factor. Methods: A worksheet was used to evaluate a methodically selected list of journals, including types of articles published, requirements of authors for human-focused randomized control trials, JCR Impact Factor and other JCR metrics for each specific journal title. A worksheet was filled out for each journal by each member of the research team and answers combined for consensus. Group means and SDs were calculated and the Student’s t-Test applied to values for selected journals. Main Results: 50 candidate pharmacy journals were identified and 41 met the criteria for publishing human-centered randomized control trials. Journals were grouped according to whether they required CONSORT or had other reporting requirements for human RCTs, or had no requirements for such studies. Few (6; 15%) pharmacy journals required authors to use CONSORT; and additional 15 (37%) journals provided as least some author guidelines similar to CONSORT. Pharmacy journals using CONSORT or other guidelines had a higher average impact factor (3.5; SD = 1.5) than did journals without guidelines (2.4; SD = 0.9; p = 0.007). Conclusions: There appears to be a statistical difference in average JCR metrics between journals which require specific RCT guidelines and those which do not. The use of reporting guidelines, such as CONSORT, by pharmacy journals is associated with increased impact as represented by JCR influence measures.

Aanlynjoernale in Afrikaans onderrig : leerders se hantering van frustrasie (Afrikaans)

Mihai, Maryke Anneke 18 January 2008 (has links)
This study focuses on blogging, as one of the possible uses of the computer in an Afrikaans class in order to improve integration between the learning areas in a school environment. It was a new experience for learners, especially the use of technology in an Afrikaans class. The researcher wanted to determine how learners will handle frustration in a new situation, with the focus on the different components operating in a school environment: the frustration caused by the use of the technology, the subjects / learners themselves, the rules they had to adhere to, the community they lived in: teacher, other learners, parents, who had to consider the project viability. The most important recommendation is that this type of exercise should become a preferred way of teaching and learning, due to its educational value in shaping learner’s minds and guiding teachers to see and do things differently in a technology driven society. / Dissertation (MEd (Computer Integrated Education))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

Revistas acadêmicas de administração: proposição de ampliação de escopo / Management journals: proposition to extend the scope

Francisco Ribeiro de Almeida 07 April 2010 (has links)
The issue motivating this thesis, supported by information search, is that the Brazilian scholarly publications in management aim almost exclusively at research. As the role of the Academy is not limited to the advancement of science, it is proposed to extend the scope of what should be a scholarly publication in management to a set of journals with a role that best meets the diverse educational needs (teaching, research, and service). The main source of information for the formulation of this proposition is the comparison of the business model of the Brazilian journals (27 journals analyzed in the QUALIS upper strata) to the model of international journals (139 journals analyzed assessed by JCR). The typical Brazilian journal: (i) is focused on research (100% of the analyzed journals), (ii) provides open access to their articles on the internet (100%), (iii) publishes many of its articles only in Portuguese (85 %) (iv) does not have specific theme and covers the area of management as a whole (81%), (v) is published by a institution of higher education (74%), and (vi) was created after 1994 (74%). The typical international journal focuses on research (80%), (ii) does not offer open access to their articles on the Internet (99%), and (iii) only accepts texts in English (96%) (iv) has specific theme (80% work in a sub-area of administration), (v) is published by a professional publisher (83%), and (vi) was created before 1994 (87%). Based on the survey, to better meet academic needs, it was concluded that Brazilian journals should specialize. They will be differentiated by type of reader; some will focus on the researchers, others on the students and others on professionals who work in the market. The journals focusing on research will be distinguished by theme such as finance, marketing, strategy etc... English will be used in magazines that seek international insertion. This thesis aims at feeding the debate on the desired future situation of scholarly publications in management.

Manuscript Development and Publishing: A 5-Step Approach

Downey, Susan M., Geraci, Stephen A. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Publications in peer-reviewed biomedical journals are essential for sharing knowledge and advancing healthcare. This article will articulate a 5-step approach for developing and publishing a manuscript, and provide academic clinicians with an instructional tool they can provide to their protégés and junior faculty. The authors attempt to distill existing advice for preparing manuscripts, which is found in myriad formats, combine these tutorials with their collective experience and present this approach for developing and publishing successfully a manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. The 5 steps identified instruct would-be authors to (1) know their material and determine their audience; (2) outline their manuscript; (3) be ethically vigilant; (4) develop individual sections and submit their manuscript and (5) respond to reviewers׳ comments. This article describes each of these steps in detail. Rewards of publishing articles include recognition by peers and supervisors, contribution to academic promotion and dissemination of information to the medical community.
