New journal for the promotion of Vietnamese environmental research / Tạp chí mới khuyến khích nghiên cứu môi trường ở Việt Nam

Stefan, Catalin 06 August 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The Vietnamese science and high education system plays a major role in the country’s social and economical development. Due to a mixed influence of international education systems, the contribution of the Vietnamese research to the international scientific landscape is still modest. Over the past decades, the most scientific programmes focused mostly on rather theoretical sciences and less on applied sciences. The results are reflected by a rather low rate of international publications on experimental science. Together with the country’s efforts on the efficient use of natural resources, there is an urgent demand for strengthening the scientific activity on environmental sciences. The new Journal of Vietnamese Environment was created to respond to the increasing interest in environmental research. The journal was founded as part of an academic network initiated by the Dresden University of Technology in the framework of Vietnamese-German cooperation programs on training and education. With multidisciplinary fields of interest and several types of manuscripts, the journal has a predominant academic character, the submission of manuscripts is open to students, graduates, researchers and staff members of research and academic institutions, as well as to any individual willing to disseminate the knowledge about the management of Vietnamese environment.

The impact of mathematics anxiety, gender, and mathematics achievement on ontogenetic indicators for Hispanic/Latino students in higher education mathematics classes

Perez, Armando Isaac 30 October 2006 (has links)
A convenience sample of 123 Hispanic/Latino students from a predominantly Hispanic/Latino South Texas community college was used to determine if gender and/or journal-writing had any effects on mathematics anxiety or achievement. Eight sections of college-algebra courses were administered the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) to determine levels of mathematics anxiety and the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) to determine levels of mathematical achievement. Results of the study suggest that journal-writing decreases levels of mathematics anxiety among students. In addition, the study suggests that males and females do not differ in terms of mathematical achievement. These finding are consistent with previous studies. However, the study also suggested that males and females report the same levels of mathematics anxiety and that journal-writing does not increase mathematical achievement. This is in contrast to previous published studies.

Narratives and rhetoric : persuasion in doctors' writings about the summer complaint, 1883-1939

Sliter-Hays, Sara Maria 24 September 2012 (has links)
Narratives and Rhetoric: Persuasion in Doctors’ Writings about the Summer Complaint, 1883-1939, is a study of narrative as it is used in scientific writing. This rhetorical analysis follows the historical evolution of a genre as the genre mediates competing scientific, professional, and social forces, changes them, and is changed by them. Despite advances in scientific and medical technology that offered supposedly objective and measurable data and despite doctors’ push for recognition as scientific professionals, doctors’ writing increasingly relied on narrative as a persuasive device in medical articles published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Medical narratives perform pedagogical functions, illustrating both the general course of a disease and variant courses so that practitioners can make better diagnoses when they are faced with similar cases. Medical narratives also shape doctors’ discourse and, through that, the practice of medicine and the formation of the medical profession. Medical narratives maintain ambiguity, perpetuating the need for the skilled human clinician despite the proliferation of more and more sophisticated medical technology. Medical narratives also determine how the various participants in medical decisions--the doctor, the patient, the parent, and the disease itself--are valued and judged. These value judgments determine what medical interventions and cultural systems are deployed to return a patient to health. Medical narratives can be epideictic, reinforcing doctors’ ethos; they can be disciplinary, correcting errant members; and they can be exhortatory, urging doctors toward better ethical practice. Thus, narratives are extremely valuable in medical discourse, and their persistence in doctors’ writing is easily explained. / text

Airships and angels : concept and collaboration

Pettway, Jocelyn Denise 03 February 2014 (has links)
Airships and Angels is a faux Victorian travel journal created through collaboration with Kristina Krumholt and Rudy Ramirez. Ultimately, the goal of the thesis project is to disrupt traditional hierarchical creative processes by challenging the order in which artifacts are crafted during the creation of a narrative structure and, ultimately, a performance. The end product is a leather book that is shared in the manner of rare books (by appointment and in a controlled environment) for a week, and two special two-night readings with projected imagery at the end of the week. In this process I first created concept art and the text was created afterwards by Krumholt. Once the text was complete the two artifacts were brought together and developed further. Eventually all the images were drawn and the book was printed, bound, and performed. / text

Mobilaus elektroninio dienyno kūrimo technologijos / The technologies of mobile e-journal development

Bukienė, Eglė 10 June 2006 (has links)
Not a long while ago mobile technologies were introduced in Lithuania and now they are quickly spreading in our everyday life. Having been a luxury, a mobile telephone today is being used not only for calling and SMS sending, but it also performs many other functions. The considerable use of mobile technologies all over the world has determined the development of wireless networks and device technologies as well as services fitted for the devices, particularly in the recent years. As a result, mobile technologies are becoming an inseparable part of entertainment, business, education and politics in Lithuania. This work dwells upon the analysis of mobile e-journal development technologies, seeking to improve the form of e-journal which has been used up to now – the journal could be accessed and managed using mobile devices. Besides, the analyzed technologies could be applied to the development of similar programs for mobile devices. In the work, GSM, wireless network technologies, architecture for mobile devices and development tools for individual and network applications are analyzed. The analysis of Java platform and Java-based WebSphere software family and tools for the synchronization of databases is also presented. This work also dwells upon the description of e-journal specifications, model development and realization.

Spiritual Journal Keeping: An Ethnographic Study of Content, Materials, Practice, and Structure

Siracky, Hailey 28 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis reports the findings of an exploratory, ethnographic study of the spiritual journal keeping practices of Catholic university students at the 'Harbour House,' a Catholic student centre and parish operating on the campus of a large, Canadian university. Guided by the question,'How and why do Catholic students keep journals to document their spiritual lives?' it examines journal keeping in the context of Catholic spirituality, the relationships students have with their journals as spiritual documents, and the representations of information found in spiritual journals. Findings are organized under the themes of Content, Materials, Practice, and Structure, and demonstrate that spiritual journal keeping is a deeply personal activity that involves a variety of unique and individualized information practices and behaviours, developed and used in order to better navigate a vast and mysterious spiritual path, and to work towards spiritual growth.
