Management of construction logistics in Stockholm : Identifying ways of improvement for construction logistics within the inner city of Stockholm

The construction industry is similar to other manufacturing industries. Aproduction is made up of several small moments and the final product ariseswhen all these steps are completed. Each one of these operations is equallyimportant and increased efficiency is required at all stages. An oftenforgotten step when discussing efficiency in the construction industry is the logisticprocess.The main problems which emerge, when increasing the efficiency of logisticswithin a city centre, are the location itself, the required close collaborationbetween different actors and the industry’s unwillingness to change itscurrent habits. These problems are relevant as they not only address theconcrete problem of a congested inner city but also handle an abstractproblem which is the attitudes and relationships within the constructionindustry. If these problems were tackled, a more structured industry could arise withadditional economical benefits for the entire industry.The aim is to acquire a more efficient and effective logistic process byreducing the number of transports as well as increasing the time efficiency,standard and service of the required transports. The constituent for thisreport is Skanska AB and Uppsala University.The study consists of an in depth study of literature, as well as an analysis ofprevious executed projects and interviews with different actors within theconstruction industry. The results describe the answers given by each actorand a comparison is made with the literature study.The main conclusions of the study are that without collaboration and therightful incentives a development of the logistics process within the industry is notlikely to happen. In addition to the conclusion some suggestions for changes towardsimprovement are recognized.

Outlining benefits and barriers for employing four types of information system in fourth-party logistics

This paper examines the process of employing four kinds of information systems in fourth-party logistics. The paper mainly tries to answer research questions: what is fourth-party logistics and information systems; what are benefits and barriers for using four kinds of information systems (RFID, WMS, EDI, Electronic marketplace) with the help of fourth-party logistics; what are unique benefits and barriers for fourth-party logistics to employ the four kinds of information systems and how to overcome the difficulties. To answer the research question, qualitative case study approach was employed and two case companies were chosen. Information in literature review was collected from secondary data for example scientific paper. Information in findings was collected from interviews of people in charge of the project and internal reports.   Definitions of fourth-party logistics and information system were reviewed in literature review. The differences between fourth-party logistics and third-party logistics were presented as well. In addition, categorization of various kinds of advanced information systems was also listed.   Benefits and barriers organized from literature and case studies were gathered and compared in discussion. Two significant benefits were identified: opportunities to do businesses with leading companies and improved efficiency. Two main barriers are confusion of the concept of fourth-party logistics and terminology of information system and financial justification. There are different opinions between the two case companies, literature review and empirical data, and between different literature. The paper concluded that there are many benefits and barriers for employing the four kinds of information systems in fourth-party logistics, and the future development of it is promising.

Lietuva turi labai geria geografinę padėti nes randasi sankryžoje tarp rytų ir vakarų Europos. Taip pat Lietuva turi pakankamai gilias transportavimo tradicijas. Kartais įvairiuose žurnaluose galime matyti antraštės arba pastebėti frazes įvairiuose leidiniuose, kad Lietuva yra arba gali tapti Europos logistikos centru. Teisingai pasinaudojus žiniomis, krovinių gabenimo tradicijomis ir geografine padėtimi tai tikrai yra pasiekiama, tačiau pamačius paskutinius pasaulio banko duomenys apie logistikos lygį šalyse, galime pastebėti, kad Lietuva yra prasčiausioje vietoje lyginant su kaimynais Latviais, Estais arba Lenkais taigi darbe iškeltas tikslas yra sudaryti kelių logistikos vystymosi modelį remiantis kelių transportu, nes jo patirtis Lietuvoje yra didžiausia nuo nepriklausomybės atkūrimo laikų. Numatomas darbo objektas: logistikos paskirstymo sistemos grandis - transportas. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Lithuania has a very good geographical position as it is located between the Eastern and the Western Europe. Moreover, it has relatively old transportation traditions. Sometimes headlines or phrases that Lithuania is or can become the logistics centre in Europe can be seen in various magazines. With correct use of knowledge, transportation traditions and geographical location this target can be achieved; however, the latest data from the World Bank on the level of logistics in various countries reveal that Lithuania occupies the last position compared with its neighbours Latvia, Estonia or Poland. Thus, the aim of the following thesis is to present the model of development of road logistics based to the road transport because experience in this area in Lithuania is the highest, leading back to the years of the independence restoration. It has become a necessity to work with the suppliers to provide flexible, accurate, effective and cost effective goods and/or services (Barla, 2003; Ellram, 2002). In addition organisations are developing and utilising new business models geared towards improving both the balance sheet and the income statement to respond to external forces and new market opportunities. The change in business model places additional emphasis on leveraging increased innovation from suppliers, thus having a vast impact on supply management to such an extent that organisations are creating strategic relationships (Carter et al., 2007). In this paper, the supplier relationship management model will be studied under lean philosophy as to address the focal point – sustainable procurement. The paper will consist of three main areas: Supplier relationship management – Literature study Supplier relationship management – Case study Supplier relationship management – Operational tool Supplier relationship management – Literature study will address the theoretical methodologies, best practices, benefits and advantages, etc. Supplier relationship management – Case study will showcase a South African multi-national FMCG1 manufacturer’s methodology as well as the benefits of utilising a supplier relationship management approach to procurement. In the theoretical part I describe Logistics Technologies and different elements of Lean Production. In the second part of thesis I describe practical implementation of certain methods of Lean Manufacturing, namely the method of Kanban and 5S. In conclusion, the work evaluates the overall effectiveness of the newly implemented system .

Perfil profissional em logística: uma visão dos docentes da Engenharia de Produção / Logistics professional profile: a production engineering teacher\'s view

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar a percepção dos docentes dos cursos de graduação em Engenharia de Produção para a formação do profissional de logística. A base para esta pesquisa consistiu em confrontar um modelo teórico de conhecimento em logística, denominado árvore do conhecimento, com o perfil dos docentes da Engenharia de Produção, identificando assim a influência destes na formação do profissional que atua em logística. Foi destacado também qual o perfil ideal para o profissional que atuará em logística, segundo a ótica destes mesmos docentes. O método utilizado foi a pesquisa de avaliação survey. Os resultados gerais da pesquisa apontam que os docentes dos cursos de graduação em engenharia de produção, têm uma contribuição bastante efetiva na formação do profissional que atua em logística. No entanto, é necessário ressaltar que estes exercem uma influência considerável na determinação do perfil do profissional a atuar em logística, devido à formação na área de engenharia. / The objective of this work is to analyze the graduation Production Engineering teacher\'s view in a logistics professional profile. The base for this research is to compare a theoretical model in logistics knowledge - called knowledge tree - with the Production Engineering teacher\'s profile, identifying how is that influence in the logistics professional\'s formation. Besides, the ideal profile of the logistics professional is too emphasized according to the same teacher\'s view. The used method is the survey evaluation research. The general results pointed that the teachers of production engineering graduation courses have a quite effective contribution in the logistics professional\'s formation. However, it is necessary to emphasize that the teachers\'great influence in the logistics professional\'s profile is due the brazilian formation in the engineering area.

Os casos Brasileiro, Britânico e Americano foram selecionados por claramente configurarem diferentes níveis de maturidade de compartilhamento das vias de transporte, chamado no setor por Interoperabilidade. O meio de pagamento via cartão de crédito, débito e "charge" revolucionaram o modelo de pagamento por produtos e serviços. No modelo econômico moderno é raro encontrar alguma loja que não aceite cartões como meios de pagamento. Outra revolução comportamental resultante do meio de pagamento por cartão é caracterizada pela diferença na sincronia entre o pagamento por produtos e serviços e a quitação dos mesmos débitos. Nesse contexto o desenvolvimento de meios eletrônicos de pagamentos alterou tanto a procura como a oferta de produtos e serviços na medida em que, entre outras características, possibilita que as pessoas tomem mais créditos pelo encorajamento de financiar suas despesas no tempo. Usualmente na literatura este assunto é tratado através de uma base econômica, sob a perspectiva de segurança na transferência de dados e infraestrutura física de tecnologia de informação. No entanto, os padrões de serviço de oferta e a demanda por meio eletrônico de pagamento são influenciados pelo comportamento dos seus clientes, pela maturidade do mercado em que estão inseridos e por questões de regulação governamental. The Brazilian, British and American cases were selected by clearly configure different levels of maturity of sharing of transport flows, called in the industry for interoperability. The means of payment via credit card, debit, and "charge" revolutionized the model of payment for products and services. In modern economic model is rare to find a shop that does not accept cards as means of payment. Other behavioral revolution resulting from the means of payment by card is characterized by difference in synchrony between the payment for products and services and the discharge of the same charges. In this context, the development of electronic payments has changed both the demand and supply of products and services to the extent that, among other characteristics, enables people to take more credits by encouragement to finance its expenditure in time. Usually in literature this subject is dealt with by means of an economic base, from the perspective of security of data transfer and physical infrastructure of information technology. However, the Standards of service provision and the demand for electronic means of payment are influenced by the behavior of their customers, for the maturity of the market in which they are inserted and by issues of government regulation. Using the method of studies of prospective cases to analyze the transport flows of payment by e-card this study seeks to analyze the changes in the patterns of supply and demand for the service, caused by the change in the regulation of the sector that has opened to competition model in 2010.
