Estimation of Complex Permittivity of Silicon at 2.45 GHz Microwave Frequency

abstract: Estimation of complex permittivity of arsenic-doped silicon is the primary topic of discussion in this thesis presentation. The frequency that is of interest is 2.45 GHz, frequency typically used in conventional microwave ovens. The analysis is based on closed-form analytical expressions of cylindrical symmetry. A coaxial/radial line junction with the central conductor sheathed in dielectric material, which is As-doped silicon in this case, are analyzed. Electrical and magnetic field equations governing the wave propagation in this setup are formulated by applying the necessary boundary conditions. Input admittance is computed using the fields in the device and reflection coefficient is calculated at the input. This analytical solution is matched to the reflection coefficient acquired by experiments conducted, using VNA as the input source. The contemplation is backed by simulation using High Frequency Structural Simulator, HFSS. Susceptor-assisted microwave heating has been shown to be a faster and easier method of annealing arsenic-doped silicon samples. In that study, it was noticed that the microwave power absorbed by the sample can directly be linked to the heat power required for the annealing process. It probes the validity of the statement that for arsenic-doped silicon the heating curve depends only on its sheet properties and not on the bulk as such and the results presented here gives more insight to it as to why this assumption is true. The results obtained here can be accepted as accurate since it is known that this material is highly conductive and electromagnetic waves do not penetrate in to the material beyond a certain depth, which is given by the skin depth of the material. O número de pessoas infectadas por protozoários dos gêneros Leishmania e Trypanosoma cruzi, no mundo, permanece preocupante, havendo cerca de 12 milhões de casos de leishmaniose e 7 a 8 milhões referentes à doença de Chagas. Face ao grave quadro destas doenças e às limitações da terapêutica atual, a busca de novos fármacos é urgente. Considerada uma das principais estratégias disponíveis, a pesquisa a partir de espécies vegetais contendo constituintes bioativos é promissora fonte de moléculas potencialmente ativas. Neste contexto, espécies do gênero Lavandula mostraram atividade anti-Leishmania in vitro, tendo motivado a seleção de L. angustifolia (Lamiaceae). Embora tenham sido comprovadas diversas atividades farmacológicas desta espécie, a atividade antiprotozoária frente aos agentes avaliados ainda não havia sido estudada. Além disto, a produção em larga escala e o seu uso bastante difundido no mundo, sobretudo nas indústrias cosméticas, de perfumes e de domissanitários, despertou interesse. O presente trabalho visou à análise da composição do óleo volátil de uma variedade de L. angustifolia aclimatada ao Brasil e à avaliação de sua atividade antiprotozoária in vitro, frente a cepas de Leishmania infantum, L. amazonensis e de Trypanosoma cruzi. A análise do óleo volátil das inflorescências e das folhas, por CG-EM, indicou a predominância de monoterpenos, tendo-se estabelecido análise comparativa entre estes órgãos. De forma geral, o óleo foi inativo frente às espécies de Leishmania, tendo apresentado promissora atividade anti-Trypanosoma. / The number of people infected by Leishmania and Trypanosoma cruzi protozoa around the world has increased and raised concerns that approximately 12 million cases of leishmaniasis and 7 to 8 million cases of Chagas disease have been reported. The alarming statistics involving these diseases and limitations of therapeutics currently in use point to an urgent need for new drugs. Considered one of the main strategies available, research on plants containing bioactive constituents is a promising source of potentially active molecules. Species of Lavandula genus have shown in vitro anti-Leishmania activity and this encouraged the present study on L. angustifolia (Lamiaceae) species. Although several pharmacological activities have been identified, the antiprotozoal activity against these specific agents has not yet been approached. Moreover, the possibility of a large-scale production and its quite comprehensive use worldwide, especially for the manufacturing of cosmetics, perfumes and household sanitizing products have attracted our interest. This study aimed at the analysis of the volatile oil compounds of the L. angustifolia species acclimatized in Brazil as well as the evaluation of the in vitro antiprotozoal activity against the strains of Leishmania (L.) infantum, L. (L.) amazonensis and Trypanosoma cruzi. The CG-EM analysis of the volatile oil from the inflorescences and leaves has shown monoterpenes as majority constituents also allowing a comparative analysis between these organs. Overall, the oil was not active against the Leishmania species but presented promising anti-Trypanosoma activity.

Side Channel Analysis of a Java-­based Contactless Smart Card

Smart cards are widely used in different areas of modern life including identification, banking, and transportation cards. Some types of cards are able to store data and process information as well. A number of them can run cryptographic algorithms to enhance the security of their transactions and it is usually believed that the information and values stored in them are completely safe. However, this is generally not the case due to the threat of the side channel. Side channel analysis is the process of obtaining additional information from the internal activity of a physical device beyond that allowed by its specifications. There exist different techniques to attempt to obtain information from a cryptosystem using other ways than the normally permitted. This thesis presents a series of experiments intended to study the side channel from a particular type of smart card, known as Java Cards. This investigation uses the well known technique, Correlation Analysis, and a new type of side channel attack called fast correlation in the frequency domain to study the side channel of Java Cards. This research presents a giant magnetoresistor (GMR) probe and for the first time, this type of sensor is used to investigate the side channel. A novel setup designed for studying the side channel of smart cards is described and two metrics used to evaluate the analysis results are presented. After testing the GMR probe and methodology on electronic devices executing the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), such as 8 bit microcontrollers and 128 bit AES implementations on FPGAs, these techniques were applied to analyse two different models of Java Cards working in the contactless mode. The results show that successful attacks on a software implementation of AES running on both models of Java Cards are possible.

Efficient analysis and design of devices in Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology

Para abordar el análisis de estas estructuras de forma altamente eficiente, se pretenden utilizar dos enfoques distintos, que llevarían a dos técnicas distintas y eficientes, pero cada una de ellas con sus ventajas e inconvenientes respecto de la otra, que podremos concluir una vez finalizado el trabajo de investigación. Por un lado, se pretende utilizar el Método de los Momentos, una técnica numérica que convierte las ecuaciones integrales de un problema electromagnético en un sistema linear, expandiendo la magnitud desconocida usando un conjunto de funciones con coeficientes desconocidos. Al forzar las condiciones de contorno, en este caso de potencial eléctrico, en un determinado número de puntos, se obtiene un sistema linear de ecuaciones que será resuelto numéricamente. Por otro lado, según el segundo enfoque, pretende utilizar una expansión en modos cilíndricos del campo, tanto incidente como dispersado. Dada la geometría circular de las vías éstas pueden ser caracterizadas de forma analítica mediante espectros circulares. Posteriormente se resolverá el acoplo entre las vías mediante el método de [1] pero generalizado al caso de objetos inmersos en un medio dieléctrico infinito, y se desarrollará un nuevo método de acoplo modal entre modos cilíndricos y modos guiados proyectando las ecuaciones del acoplo modal tanto sobre modos cilíndricos como sobre modos guiados para evitar las singularidades que aparecen con el método de de [2] cuando los planos de referencia están muy próximos al objeto dispersor. Por tanto, esta técnica caracterizará las vías de forma analítica y resolverá las integrales del acoplo de modos mediante la transformada rápida de Fourier. Para aumentar más aún la eficiencia de ambos métodos se evitará repetir los cálculos para cada punto en frecuencia, y se implementará la técnica de barrido rápido en frecuencia similar descrita en [3], adaptándola al caso particular de cada método de análisis, aunque se prevé que quizá dicho procedimiento sea más difícil de implementar en el segundo método. Se espera que ambas técnicas puedan proporcionar unos tiempos de computación inferiores a los del software comercial de análisis electromagnético más habitual (i.e. HFSS), y también inferiores a otros métodos de análisis recientemente aparecidos en la bibliografía técnica ([4],[5],[6]). En concreto, se espera que los tiempos de computación para barrido discreto en frecuencia sea inferior con el segundo método ya que usa únicamente expresiones analíticas y transformada rápida de Fourier, pero, dado que el primer método es más susceptible de realizar barrido rápido en frecuencia, éste puede ser muy útil a la hora de realizar muchos análisis consecutivos. Una vez se disponga de métodos eficientes para el análisis de dispositivos SIW, se abordará el diseño de varios dispositivos pasivos en esta tecnología (filtros de diferentes topologías, diplexores, multiplexores, híbridos, acopladores, etc.). Como se dispone de una vasta experiencia en el grupo de investigación en el diseño de dispositivos en guía de onda rectangular, se puede como primera aproximación realizar el diseño en guía, y luego transformar esta estructura guiada en otra en tecnología SIW mediante unas reglas empíricas que relacionan ambas tecnologías [7]. Posteriormente se debe ajustar el diseño en el dispositivo SIW ya que estas reglas empíricas no consiguen que la respuesta sea idéntica a la del dispositivo guiado original, principalmente debido al hecho de que los irises rectangulares de la guía son transformados en vías metalizadas con geometría circular, no rectangular. Para minimizar este ajuste, se diseñará el dispositivo guiado con irises con esquinas redondeadas en la cavidad (método de [8] pero con un simulador más eficiente [9]), haciendo que el radio de esas esquinas redondeadas coincida con el de las vías metalizadas que se van a utilizar en el dispositivo SIW. A SiGe BiCMOS LNA for mm-wave applications

A 5 GHz continuous unlicensed bandwidth is available at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies around 60 GHz and offers the prospect for multi gigabit wireless applications. The inherent atmospheric attenuation at 60 GHz due to oxygen absorption makes the frequency range ideal for short distance communication networks. For these mm-wave wireless networks, the low noise amplifier (LNA) is a critical subsystem determining the receiver performance i.e., the noise figure (NF) and receiver sensitivity. It however proves challenging to realise high performance mm-wave LNAs in a silicon (Si) complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The mm-wave passive devices, specifically on-chip inductors, experience high propagation loss due to the conductivity of the Si substrate at mm-wave frequencies, degrading the performance of the LNA and subsequently the performance of the receiver architecture. The research is aimed at realising a high performance mm-wave LNA in a Si BiCMOS technology. The focal points are firstly, the fundamental understanding of the various forms of losses passive inductors experience and the techniques to address these issues, and secondly, whether the performance of mm-wave passive inductors can be improved by means of geometry optimising. An associated hypothesis is formulated, where the research outcome results in a preferred passive inductor and formulates an optimised passive inductor for mm-wave applications. The performance of the mm-wave inductor is evaluated using the quality factor (Q-factor) as a figure of merit. An increased inductor Q-factor translates to improved LNA input and output matching performance and contributes to the lowering of the LNA NF. The passive inductors are designed and simulated in a 2.5D electromagnetic (EM) simulator. The electrical characteristics of the passive structures are exported to a SPICE netlist which is included in a circuit simulator to evaluate and investigate the LNA performance. Two LNAs are designed and prototyped using the 13μ-m SiGe BiCMOS process from IBM as part of the experimental process to validate the hypothesis. One LNA implements the preferred inductor structures as a benchmark, while the second LNA, identical to the first, replaces one inductor with the optimised inductor. Experimental verification allows complete characterization of the passive inductors and the performance of the LNAs to prove the hypothesis. According to the author's knowledge, the slow-wave coplanar waveguide (S-CPW) achieves a higher Q-factor than microstrip and coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission lines at mm-wave frequencies implemented for the 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology node. In literature, specific S-CPW transmission line geometry parameters have previously been investigated, but this work optimises the signal-to-ground spacing of the S-CPW transmission lines without changing the characteristic impedance of the lines. Optimising the S-CPW transmission line for 60 GHz increases the Q-factor from 38 to 50 in simulation, a 32 % improvement, and from 8 to 10 in measurements. Furthermore, replacing only one inductor in the output matching network of the LNA with the higher Q-factor inductor, improves the input and output matching performance of the LNA, resulting in a 5 dB input and output reflection coefficient improvement. Although a 5 dB improvement in matching performance is obtained, the resultant noise and gain performance show no significant improvement. The single stage LNAs achieve a simulated gain and NF of 13 dB and 5.3 dB respectively, and dissipate 6 mW from the 1.5 V supply. The LNA focused to attain high gain and a low NF, trading off linearity and as a result obtained poor 1 dB compression of -21.7 dBm.
