The effect of ecotype and planting location on properties and biofuels yield of big bluestem

Big bluestem is an ecological-dominant warm-season (C4) perennial native grass that comprises as much as 80% of the plant biomass in prairies in the Midwestern grasslands of North America. Its high cellulosic content and low agricultural input recently have made big bluestem a promising feedstock for ethanol production. The overall goals of this study are to evaluate the potential of big bluestem in terms of ethanol production comparing with other native grasses by diluted sulfuric acid pretreatment and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation and to understand the effects of ecotype and planting location on the chemical and elemental compositions and thermal properties as well as fermentable sugar yield of big bluestem along the Great Plains precipitation gradient. A total conversion efficiency of 79.2% and an ethanol concentration of 9.4 g/L were achieved after 72 h fermentation. About 0.262 kg (~0.332 Liters) ethanol could be produced from one kilogram dry mass of big bluestem under the present condition. Planting location had significant effects on chemical and elemental as well as specific heat, thermogravimetric parameters, high heating value and glucan mass yield. Ecotype had significant effects on glucan, xylan, lignin, and ash contents, and C, O, and H elemental fractions as well as specific heat, high heating value and glucan mass yield, whereas planting location significantly affected all measured variables. The ecotype-location interaction had significant effects on glucan, lignin, hydrogen contents and specific heat. Up to 97%, 88% and 80% of the variation in compositions can be explained by annual precipitation, growing degree days and potential evapotranspiration in 2010 respectively. Among all environmental factors, potential evapotranspiration had the most significant effect on thermal properties. Planting location had a stronger influence than ecotype and interaction between location and ecotype. Precipitation in 2010 possibly played a more significant role in divergence of glucan mass yield of the big bluestem.

Integrating genetics, geography, and local adaptation to understand ecotype formation in the yellow monkeyflower, Mimulus guttatus

<p>Speciation is a constantly ongoing process whereby reproductive isolating baririer build up over time until groups of organisms can no longer exchange genes with each other. Adaptation is thought to play a major role in the formation of these barriers, although the genetic mechanisms and geographic mode underlying the spread of barriers due to adaptive evolution is poorly understood. Critically, speciation may occur in stages through the formation of intermediate partially reproductively isolated groups. The idea of such widespread ecotypes has been the subject of great controversy over the last century. Even so, we have relatively little understanding about whether widespread ecotypes exist, wheather they are reproductively isolated, and how adaptive alleles are distributed among partially isolated groups. In this dissertation, I examined these issues in widespread coastal perennial and inland annual ecotypes of the yellow monkeyflower, Mimulus guttatus. First, I determined that coastal and inland populations comprise distinct ecotypic groups. I then determined that these ecotypes are adapted to their respective habitats through genetically based flowering time and salt tolerance differences. I assessed the genetic architecture of these adaptations through quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis and determined the geographic distribution of the underlying alleles through latitudinally replicated mapping populations. I quantified the contribution of these loci to adaptation in the field through the incorporation of advance generation hybrids in reciprocal transplant experiments. In the process, I discovered a widespread chromosomal inversion to be involved in the adaptive flowering time and annual/perennial life-history shift among the ecotypes. Overall, the results of this study suggest that widespread reproductively isolated ecotypes can form through the spread adaptive standing genetic variation between habitats and that chromosomal rearrangements can integral to this process.</p> / Dissertation

Organization, variability and epigenetic control of 5S rRNA genes in Arabidopsis thaliana / Organisation, variabilité et contrôle épigénétique des gènes d'ARNr 5S chez Arabidopsis thaliana

L'ARNr 5S est une partie intégrante du ribosome indispensable pour la synthèse des protéines. Cette fonction essentielle nécessite une régulation fine de l'expression des ARNr 5S en fonction des exigences cellulaires. L'ARNr 5S est codé par des gènes organisés en répétitions en tandem principalement situés dans les régions péricentromériques des chromosomes 3, 4 et 5 dans le génome Col-0 d'Arabidopsis thaliana. L’étude approfondie de l’organisation, la dynamique et la régulation épigénétique des gènes d’ARNr 5S reste cependant difficile du fait de l’absence d’assemblage de ces régions hautement répétées dans la séquence du génome d’Arabidopsis disponible dans TAIR10.Dans cette thèse, nous apportons de nouvelles informations sur les gènes d'ARNr 5S chez Arabidopsis. Nous avons confirmé les signatures d'ADN spécifiques par séquençage haut débit, identifié des polymorphismes spécifiques des régions chromosomiques portant des ADNr 5S et ainsi défini de nouvelles séquences de référence. Nous avons également étudié le statut épigénétique des gènes ARNr 5S, montrant que ces gènes sont globalement enrichis en marques répressives. Les loci situés sur les chromosomes 4 et 5 présentent également des modifications post-traductionnelles d’histones et des variants d’histone particuliers et caractéristiques d’une activité de transcription. Nous avons aussi montré que les loci d'ADNr 5S sont très dynamiques au sein de l'espèce Arabidopsis avec des variations entre différent écotypes du nombre de copies de gènes d’ARNr 5S et de l’importance relative de chaque cluster. En utilisant l'écotype Ler et des mutants spécifiques, nous montrons que le locus du chromosome 5 est une source majeure de réarrangements chromosomiques qui affectent l'organisation de la chromatine dans le noyau. Enfin, nous suggérons que des variations de l’état chromatinien des gènes d'ARNr 5S peuvent conduire à une différence de transcription dans les différents écotypes.Cette étude permet d’établir un rôle de l'organisation de la chromatine dans la régulation transcriptionnelle et l'organisation des gènes d'ARNr 5S. / 5S rRNA is an integral component of the ribosome and is essential for protein synthesis. 5S rRNA expression is therefore tightly regulated to suit the cellular requirements. 5S rRNA is encoded by gene arrays organized in tandem repeats mainly situated in the pericentromeric regions of chromosomes 3, 4 and 5 in the Arabidopsis thaliana Col-0 genome. Full genome assembly remains challenging in these highly repeated regions and impedes further investigation of their organization, dynamics and epigenetic regulation.In this thesis, we provide information on 5S rRNA genes in Arabidopsis thaliana. We confirmed specific DNA signatures by deep sequencing and define chromosome-specific polymorphisms and new reference sequences. We also studied the epigenetic status of the 5S rRNA genes showing that these genes are enriched in repressive marks whereas the loci on chromosome 4 and 5 also display peculiar histone modifications and variants characteristic of transcriptional activity. We report that 5S rDNA loci are highly dynamic within the Arabidopsis species with high level of variation in global copy number and cluster proportion between ecotypes. Using the Ler ecotype, in which reorganization events were recorded, and specific mutant backgrounds, we identified chromosome 5 rDNA locus as a major source of variation and observed altered chromatin organization in nuclear space as a consequence of 5S rDNA locus variation. Finally, we suggest that differences in chromatin states at the two main 5S rDNA loci can lead to differential usage of 5S rRNA genes indifferent ecotypes.The analysis provides evidence for a role of chromatin organization in transcriptional regulation and 5S rDNA organization.

Spatiotemporal variation in the relative fitness of a northern and a southern ecotype of Arabidopsis thaliana

Terrestrial plants exist in almost every habitat on the earth, ranging from warm and moist tropical rainforests, hot and dry deserts, and to cold and barren tundras. Furthermore, a single species may encounter different climatic conditionshabitats within its range distribution which climatic conditions differs from one to another. In this study, I examine the flowering phenology and fitness of two locally adapted genotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, one from the southern range limit (Italy) and one from the northern range limit (Sweden) in Europe, in an outdoor common-garden experiment in Uppsala. Flowering start was recorded to characterize flowering phenology, whilst survival and fecundity was recorded to characterize fitness. Flowering start differed significantly between the two genotypes as with the Swedish genotype startinged flowering 24 days later than the Italian genotype. The Italian genotype had higher fitness (number of fruits per seedling planted), which was due to a slightly higher survival and fecundity. The relative fitness of the two genotypes was thus intermediate to that observed in reciprocal transplants between the native sites of origin of the two populations.

Developing Production Techniques and A Site Assessment Tool for Forest Farmed Ramps in Appalachia

The Allium tricoccum Aiton (ramps, aka wild leeks), a native spring ephemeral, is a cultural keystone species in Appalachia, a mountainous physiographic region encompassing 205,000 square miles of the eastern United States. People in Appalachia have long harvested ramps in the wild. However, growing demand for the plant in and outside the region has increased harvesting, resulting in threats to native populations. Agroforestry cultivation techniques and technical support for sustained-yield forest farming practices are needed to conserve ramps and meet increasing demand. Various techniques for assessing suitable production practices for ramps were explored in this dissertation, particularly examining best-suited ramp ecotypes, mycorrhizal treatment, and habitat suitability determination. In the first study, bulbs and seeds from diverse Appalachian locations were gathered and transplanted to a common experimental site to investigate the effects of different ramp ecotypes on growth, survival, and stress responses. Plant characteristics and stress measurements were recorded before transplantation and post-transplantation assessments. Specifically, the study investigated the germination rate of three ramp seed ecotypes and the growth, survival, and stress responses of eight native ramp bulb ecotypes and three commercially obtained seedling samples. Results indicated that above-ground growth, survival, and stress response on the ramp ecotypes differed significantly. The second study explored the impact of mycorrhizae on ramps and was evaluated by assessing the impact of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) inoculation on Allium tricoccum. Four measurements, collectively referred to as parameter categories, were assessed. These included measures of 1) above-ground plant growth: leaf length, and leaf width; 2) stress measurement: transplant stress after a few days of transplant, and photosynthetic performance stress after a year of transplant; 3) survival analysis; and 4) mycorrhizal colonization rate. For each parameter category, three treatment comparison categories were conducted: 1) Positive control treatments: bulbs were planted from their native environment without treatment; 2) Negative controls: bulbs were treated with fungicide before planting to eradicate existing AMF in roots; and 3) The test group: bulbs were inoculated with commercial AMF (Atriva 500). Results indicated that mycorrhizal inoculation could increase ramp leaf length (P≤0.03). However, the impact varied by ecotype, highlighting the importance of considering local environmental conditions and ramp ecotype. Mycorrhizal inoculation did not impact ramp growth at the seedling stage. Mycorrhizal treatment increased the transplanted ramp's survival and stress tolerance (P≤0.001). The third study used multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), the Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP), and weighted linear combinations to model suitable habitats for ramps production. Ten habitat criteria were chosen (including five soil properties, three topographic parameters, and two land use properties) to assess the potential for growing ramps in seven counties in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. The percentage of highly suitable areas for ramps production in the studied counties ranges from 21.5% in Haywood County to 49.6% in Macon County. Similarly, moderately suitable areas range from 36.7% in Macon County to 54.5% in Lawrence County. Ground truthing was performed to validate the model. Ramp patch locations within each county were geocoded in the final suitability maps. Existing ramp patches were within the model's estimate of moderate to high site suitability ranges, suggesting the model is valid. Results of the study suggest that site suitability modeling could be useful for producers interested in growing ramps in forest farm settings across Appalachia. / Doctor of Philosophy / The ramp, also known as the wild leek, is an important food, medicinal and cultural resource for the people of Appalachia. However, increasing demand for ramps beyond this region has led to over-harvesting and threatens the plant's native populations. Appropriate cultivation techniques and technical support for sustained-yield forest farming practices are needed to conserve ramps and meet growing demand. This dissertation explores various techniques for assessing suitable production practices for ramps, including examining ramp ecotypes, mycorrhizal treatments, and habitat suitability determination. The first study evaluated the ecotypic variation among ramps collected from different geographic regions and their impact on plant performance. Ramp ecotypes displayed differences in above-ground growth, survival, and stress response. The second study examined the impact of mycorrhizae on ramps and found that mycorrhizal inoculation can increase ramp leaf length and survival and stress tolerance of transplanted ramps. However, this impact varied by ecotype, highlighting the importance of considering local environmental conditions and ramp ecotype. The third study involved developing a model to identify suitable habitats for growing ramps. The model was tested for seven counties across Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. The percentage of land predicted as highly suitable for ramps production ranged from 21.5% in Haywood County, NC, to 49.6% in Macon County, NC. Moderately suitable lands ranged from 36.7% in Macon County, NC to 54.5% in Lawrence County, PA. Ground truthing confirmed the model's accuracy as geocoded existing ramp patch locations fell within the estimated suitable ranges. Site suitability modeling could be useful for people interested in growing ramps in forest farm settings across Appalachia. Overall, this research provides insights into best practices for ramp cultivation that help conserve a cultural keystone species and meet the growing demand for ramps.

Genomic differentiation of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) along the Great Plains’ environmental gradient

Johnson / Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) is an ecologically dominant grass of the North American grasslands with precipitation-dependent productivity. However, climatic predictions for big bluestem’s dominant range in the Great Plains include increased periods of drought. The main objectives of this research were to determine the extent of neutral and non-neutral genetic differentiation and diversity among putative big bluestem ecotypes using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. This is the first study of both neutral and non-neutral genetic diversity of big bluestem which also includes source populations of well-described ecotypes studied in reciprocal common gardens. A total of 378 plants were genotyped from 11 source prairies, originating from one of three ecoregions (Central Kansas, Eastern Kansas, and Illinois). Using two AFLP primer sets, 387 polymorphic markers (error rate 9.18%) were found. Un-rooted neighbor joining tree and principle-component analyses showed continuous genetic differentiation between Kansas and Illinois putative ecotypes, with genetic overlap occurring between Kansas ecotypes. Analysis of molecular variance showed high diversity within-prairie sites (80%) relative to across-prairies (11%), and across- ecoregions (9%) (p<0.001). Within-prairie genetic diversity levels were similar among ecoregions (84-92%), with the highest genetic variation maintained in Illinois prairies (92%). Population structure analyses supported K=6 genetic clusters across the environmental gradient, with Kansas prairies belonging to three main genetic groups, and Illinois prairies having largely divergent allele frequencies from Kansas prairies. Interestingly, BAYESCAN analysis of the three putative ecotypes identified eight F[subscript]ST-outlier AFLP loci under potential diversifying selection. Frequency patterns of loci under diversifying selection were further linked to geo-environmental descriptors including precipitation, temperature severity, diurnal temperature variation, prairie location, and elevation. The observed allele frequency divergence between Kansas and Illinois ecotypes suggests tallgrass restorations should consider possible maladaptation of non-local ecotypes and genetic swamping. However, high within-prairie genetic variation may help individual big bluestem populations withstand climatic variability.

Bases génétiques et écologiques de la diversification adaptative chez Escherichia coli

Les processus de diversification adaptative, qui sont au cœur de la diversité du monde vivant, ont été étudiés grâce à une stratégie d'évolution expérimentale, initiée par le Pr Richard Lenski en 1988. Douze populations, fondées à partir d'un ancêtre commun d'Escherichia coli, sont propagées indépendamment depuis plus de 55 000 générations par transferts journaliers dans un milieu minimum limité en glucose. Un événement de diversification a émergé après 6500 générations d'évolution dans une seule des douze populations, appelée Ara-2, conduisant à deux lignées cellulaires différenciées, appelées S et L, qui continuent de co-exister depuis notamment grâce à des interactions négatives dépendant de leur fréquence. Deux propriétés confèrent à ce polymorphisme une grande originalité et donc un intérêt d'étude important : sa durée car il s'agit du plus long polymorphisme jamais identifié lors d'expériences d'évolution en laboratoire, et son unicité puisqu'il ne s'est produit qu'une seule fois au sein des douze populations initiées à partir d'un ancêtre commun. L'objectif de ce travail a été d'identifier les mécanismes du maintien au long terme des lignées S et L, ainsi que les bases génétiques de leur émergence. Le maintien du polymorphisme est lié à une forte dynamique des relations écologiques entre S et L, l'une des lignées envahissant systématiquement les niches écologiques de l'autre, qui réagit en conséquence pour éviter l'extinction. L'émergence de la lignée S est due à une succession précise de trois mutations, nécessaires et suffisantes pour établir les phénotypes de la lignée S. Les trois mutations affectent toutes des gènes codant des régulateurs globaux de la transcription, dont deux sont impliqués dans la régulation du métabolisme central. Pour l'un d'entre eux, l'allèle évolué altère les propriétés de liaison à l'ADN de la protéine évoluée. Bien que ce polymorphisme soit unique, ces trois gènes sont pourtant les cibles de la sélection naturelle dans la majorité des autres populations de l'expérience d'évolution. Pour deux d'entre eux, seul l'allèle substitué dans la population Ara-2 confère en fait les phénotypes de la lignée S. Ainsi, l'unicité de cet événement de diversification est liée à une succession d'événements mutationnels très précis, qui affectent par ailleurs les réseaux globaux de l'expression des gènes. Ces modifications graduelles ont ainsi conduit à l'émergence du plus long polymorphisme mis en évidence à ce jour dans des expériences d'évolution en laboratoire.

O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido na Estação Experimental do INIA La Estanzuela, em Colonia del Sacramento – Uruguai, de novembro de 2015 a março de 2017, com o objetivo de avaliar os parâmetros relacionados à produção e qualidade de sementes da espécie Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé. Buscou-se o entendimento dos componentes do rendimento de sementes frente a distintos níveis de fertilização nitrogenada e manejo de cortes. Foi utilizado o delineamento de blocos completamente casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro doses de fertilização nitrogenada (0, 75, 150 e 225 kg de N.ha-1) e três momentos de corte: corte precoce, corte tardio e sem corte, formando um arranjo fatorial 4x3. O padrão para realização do corte foi a fração da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa interceptada pelas plantas (50% para corte precoce e 80% para corte tardio). Para cada ano de estudo foram utilizados distintos locais dentro da mesma estação experimental a fim de avaliar a produção de sementes de plantas com idade similar (3 anos de idade), os quais foram denominados ambiente 2016 e ambiente 2017, sendo que no ambiente 2016 ocorreu maior deficiência hídrica no solo A aplicação de N possibilitou o incremento na massa de forragem, teor de proteína bruta, índice de nutrição nitrogenada e no número de perfilhos. A máxima produtividade de sementes alcançada situou-se próxima de 1000 kg.ha-1, rendimento atingido com 150 kg de N.ha-1 no ambiente 2016 e na dose 75 no ambiente 2017. Tal produtividade foi obtida com a realização de duas colheitas anuais, que foi possibilitada com a utilização de corte precoce e sem corte. Com o uso de corte tardio, por outro lado, foi possível a realização de apenas uma colheita anual, o que determinou menor rendimento total de sementes, porém possibilitou maior rendimento em apenas uma colheita. Com relação ao potencial germinativo das sementes, observamos que em situações de déficit hídrico, as plantas com suprimento de N comprometem a qualidade de sementes e favorecem o crescimento vegetativo, no caso de colheitas precoces. Por outro lado, a germinação foi melhorada quando aplicado nitrogênio associado ao corte tardio. Dessa forma, conclui-se que o ecótipo Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé possui bom rendimento de sementes, o qual é positivamente influenciado pela fertilização nitrogenada e aplicação de corte precoce. / The present work was developed at the INIA La Estanzuela Experimental Station, in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, from November 2015 to March 2017, with the objective of evaluating the parameters related to the production and quality of seeds of the specie Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé. We aimed understanding of the components of the seed yield under different levels of nitrogen fertilization and cutting management. A completely randomized block design with four replications was used. The treatments consisted of twelve factorial combinations of nitrogen fertilization doses (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg of N.ha-1) and three cutting times: early cut, late cut and no cut, totaling a factorial arrangement 4x3. The standard for cutting was the fraction of the photosynthetically active radiation intercepted by the plants (50% for early cutting and 80% for late cutting). For each year of study, different locations were used within the same experimental station in order to evaluate the seed production of plants with similar age (3 years old), which were named environment 2016 and environment 2017, wherein in the environment 2016 occurred greater soil water deficit The application of N promoted the increase in forage mass, crude protein content, nitrogen nutrition index and the number of tillers. The maximum seed yield reached was close to 1000 kg.ha-1, yield reached with 150 kg of N.ha-1 in the environment 2016 and at dose 75 in the environment 2017. Such productivity was obtained by performing two harvests annually, which was possible by the use of early cutting and uncut treatments. However, with late cutting was possible to perform only one annual harvest, which resulted in lower total seed yield, but with a higher yield in only one harvest. Regarding to the seed germination, we observed that in situations of water deficit, plants with N supply compromise their seed quality in detriment of vegetative growth in the case of early harvests. On the other hand, the germination was improved when N was associated with late cut. In this way, we concluded that Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé ecotype has a good seed yield, which is positively influenced by nitrogen fertilization and early cut application.

Com relação ao potencial germinativo das sementes, observamos que em situações de déficit hídrico, as plantas com suprimento de N comprometem a qualidade de sementes e favorecem o crescimento vegetativo, no caso de colheitas precoces. Por outro lado, a germinação foi melhorada quando aplicado nitrogênio associado ao corte tardio. Dessa forma, conclui-se que o ecótipo Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé possui bom rendimento de sementes, o qual é positivamente influenciado pela fertilização nitrogenada e aplicação de corte precoce. / The present work was developed at the INIA La Estanzuela Experimental Station, in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, from November 2015 to March 2017, with the objective of evaluating the parameters related to the production and quality of seeds of the specie Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé. We aimed understanding of the components of the seed yield under different levels of nitrogen fertilization and cutting management. A completely randomized block design with four replications was used. The treatments consisted of twelve factorial combinations of nitrogen fertilization doses (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg of N.ha-1) and three cutting times: early cut, late cut and no cut, totaling a factorial arrangement 4x3. The standard for cutting was the fraction of the photosynthetically active radiation intercepted by the plants (50% for early cutting and 80% for late cutting). For each year of study, different locations were used within the same experimental station in order to evaluate the seed production of plants with similar age (3 years old), which were named environment 2016 and environment 2017, wherein in the environment 2016 occurred greater soil water deficit The application of N promoted the increase in forage mass, crude protein content, nitrogen nutrition index and the number of tillers. The maximum seed yield reached was close to 1000 kg.ha-1, yield reached with 150 kg of N.ha-1 in the environment 2016 and at dose 75 in the environment 2017. Such productivity was obtained by performing two harvests annually, which was possible by the use of early cutting and uncut treatments. However, with late cutting was possible to perform only one annual harvest, which resulted in lower total seed yield, but with a higher yield in only one harvest. Regarding to the seed germination, we observed that in situations of water deficit, plants with N supply compromise their seed quality in detriment of vegetative growth in the case of early harvests. On the other hand, the germination was improved when N was associated with late cut. In this way, we concluded that Paspalum notatum INIA Sepé ecotype has a good seed yield, which is positively influenced by nitrogen fertilization and early cut application.

Cette recherche doctorale entend caractériser les fluctuations morphologiques des rennes paléolithiques du Sud-Ouest de la France consécutives aux changements climatiques. En effet, le dernier Pléniglaciaire et le Tardiglaciaire (entre 21 500 - 13 000 cal. BP) ont constitué des périodes de contraintes paléoclimatiques et paléoenvironnementales particulièrement fortes, qui ont occasionné, directement ou indirectement, des répercussions sur la taille corporelle des populations de rennes. Les séries analysées dans le cadre de ce travail proviennent tant du registre actuel que fossile. Plusieurs échantillons de populations actuelles (Norvège, Finlande, Groenland) ont ainsi été analysés, afin de tester notre méthodologie et d’envisager des comparaisons morphologiques avec les populations passées. Le corpus paléolithique comporte 29 assemblages naturels et anthropiques du Sud-Ouest de la France, datés majoritairement du dernier Pléniglaciaire et du Tardiglaciaire. La méthode du Variability Size Index appliquée récemment sur le Renne paléolithique posant des problèmes, s’agissant notamment de la détermination du sex-ratio d’un assemblage, du caractère significatif ou non des différences morphologiques -isométriques et allométriques - observées..., nous avons eu recours à une nouvelle méthodologie combinant plusieurs outils statistiques appliqués à un nouvel indice de taille (VSI* : Variability Size Index modifié). Les analyses ostéométriques et statistiques que nous avons effectuées tendent à identifier des fluctuations morphologiques temporelles attestant d’adaptations de l’espèce. D’un point de vue synchronique, nos résultats permettent de rejeter l’hypothèse précédemment soutenue de différences entre les rennes tardiglaciaires des Landes d’une part et du secteur Dordogne/Gironde d’autre part. Les données saisonnières tendent toutefois à indiquer une absence de migrations de grande ampleur des rennes selon cet axe Nord/Sud. L’existence de populations distinctes est toutefois proposée entre les rennes des Landes et ceux du Bassin de l’Aude. Le Sud-Ouest de la France, à la fin du Paléolithique supérieur, aurait été occupé de manière pérenne par des troupeaux de rennes, dont le comportement migratoire reste cependant à déterminer plus précisément. / This doctoral research aims at characterizing morphological fluctuations resulting from climate change in palaeolithic reindeers from Southwest France. Indeed, the Last Pleniglacial and the Last Glacial (between 21 500 - 13 000 cal. BP) constituted periods of particularly strong palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental constraints, which ended, either directly or indirectly, in repercussions on the body size of reindeer populations. The series analyzed within the framework of this work result from both current and fossil registers. Several samples of current populations (Norway, Finland, and Greenland) were thus analyzed, in order to experiment our methodology and envisage morphological comparisons with the past populations. The palaeolithic corpus is composed of 29 natural and anthropological assemblages of Southwest France, dated mainly from the Last Pleniglacial and the Last Glacial. Since the Variability Size Index method recently applied to palaeolithic Reindeer raises issues, particularly relating to the determination of an assemblage’s sex-ratio, to the characterization or not of observed morphological differences –either isometric and allometric–, we decided to use a new methodology combining several statistical tools applied to a new size index (VSI*: modified Variability Size Index). Osteometric and statistical analyses that we performed tend to identify temporal morphological fluctuations, demonstrating adaptations of the specie. From a synchronic standpoint, our results allow to reject the hypothesis previously asserted regarding differences between Last Glacial reindeers from Landes on the one hand and the Dordogne/Gironde sector, on the other hand. Seasonal data however tend to indicate an absence of large-scale migrations of reindeers according to such a North/South axis. Nonetheless, the existence of different populations between reindeers of Landes and those of the Aude basin is proposed. Hence, Southwest France, at the end of the upper Palaeolithic, would have been occupied continuously by reindeer herds, the migratory behaviour of which however remains to determine more exactly.
