Eduardo Kac: uma poética da criação / Eduardo Kac: a poetic of creation

Covas, Iara Maia 25 September 2009 (has links)
This dissertation approaches the poetics of the multimedia artist Eduardo Kac, internationally known for his innovative and controversial works and for his performance as a professor, critic and researcher of contemporary artistic modalities that involve the use of new technologies, including some that were developed by himself, such as the holopoetry, the telepresence and biotelematic art and the transgenic art. We consider that the idea of creation in his works, mainly the relationship between this creation and a mystical conception of language, is based on concepts and techniques of the Jewish Kabbalah. By analyzing the transgenic art works that compose the Creation Trilogy: Genesis (1999), GFPBunny (2000) e The Eighth Day (2001), we intend to highlight the references and creative procedures that connect the ancient and traditional structure of knowledge (the Kabbalah) with the analysis of creation and its relationship with language in the kabbalistic tradition and contemporary art.

The behaviours of fluid characterforms in temporal typography

Brownie, Barbara Kay January 2012 (has links)
This thesis identifies and characterises a particular kind of temporal typography in which verbal forms exhibit behaviours that have been identified by Eduardo Kac as ‘fluid’ , and fluctuate between the verbal and pictorial or abstract. A typology will be constructed which identifies the various behaviours by which fluidity is exhibited, and provides terminology for their analysis, accompanied by analysis of how these behaviours address the relationship between the commonly distinct paradigms of verbal and pictorial signs. The work identifies the distinction between fluidity and other forms of kineticism, and explores the various behaviours exhibited in fluid artefacts. When addressing local kineticism, gaps in existing research are filled by employing terms and observations from other fields. For example, Kac offers the term ‘fluid’ in description of his holographic poetry, which exhibits behaviours much like those presented in some examples of screenbased temporal typography. This thesis proposes that Kac’s term, ‘fluid’, may be adopted in order to differentiate significant local change in verbal forms from the various other kinds of kineticism observable in temporal typography. Fluid behaviours are identified in examples including Martin Lambie Nairn and MPC’s Channel 4 idents, the credit sequences of Kyle Cooper, and the typographic animations of practitioners including Komnios Zervos and Dan Waber. This thesis demonstrates that the existing discourse surrounding temporal typography has been held back by a failure to make distinguish between global kineticism (effecting layout) and local kineticism (effecting individual characters). The distinction between the global and the local is considered vital in studies of perceptual organisation, particularly Gestalt psychology. By providing a coherent typology, and consistent terminology, this study has the potential to positively influence understanding and analysis of fluid characterforms.

Considering that his three main groups of artistic productions Holopoetry, Telepresence Art and Bio Art are part of his big project of searching for possible intersections of art, new technologies, and science, it is investigated how each one of those projects of art are organized in three axes: language, body and communication. Those three elements are articulated all the time and, with the development of the aforementioned projects, show how the artist is always investigating new forms of language, new ways of problematizing and representing the body in art and above all, new ways of communicating the distinct entities involved in each one of his artistic works. Therefore, through holopoetry the artist problematizes language in the three-dimensional space and the body as a reader of a new literature. Besides, communication, which is known by its intense information flow, is projected for the future. Concerning telepresence art, the study intendeds to research how the digital language, the body that is merged with machine and the interactive communication among interactors are articulated. Regarding transgenic art, it is quite relevant when it comes to the study of language that is converted into body and/or the body that becomes language, as well as the new biological body communicating and talking to human beings. The theoretical references for the given discussion comprehended the reading of texts produced by the artist himself, and investigators such as Hugues Marchal, Dan Collins, Simone Osthoff, Edmond Couchot, Claudia Gianetti, Derrick de Kerckhove, Arlindo Machado, Lucia Santaella, Emmanuel Lévinas, Gilles Delleuze, Jacques Derrida, Umberto Eco, and others who have helped us to follow the evolution of Eduardo Kac s works / O presente trabalho de Doutorado tem como objetivo central um estudo teórico-reflexivo da obra do artista brasileiro Eduardo Kac.

O Ver Poético: Arnaldo Antunes e Eduardo Kac / The Poetic Seeing: Arnaldo Antunes e Eduardo Kac

MARTINS, Patrícia Ferreira da Silva 23 April 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T16:29:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Patricia Ferreira da Silva Martins1.pdf: 8275051 bytes, checksum: 771d7defb137f5b27695b645dcf5f56f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-04-23 / This thesis, developed within the research line Modern Poetics, aims at providing a critical and analytical reading of the experimental poetry by Arnaldo Antunes and Eduardo Kac, focusing on the practices that emphasize, above all, the relations between poetic experimentation, visuality and technology. In this sense, we present a reflection that develops among the border of literature, art and science. The work also presents a general notion of what can be called digital poetry and cyberpoetry, emphasizing the poetic works, within these inter-related practices, that have been produced in Brazil and in the world. This field imposes upon us a theoretical discussion that develops around the way of approaching the computational poetry and, consequently, around the questions related to interface and interactivity and the shifts within the system author-work-reception. In order to do that, our theoretical discussion is articulated around Jorge Luiz Antonio s and Christopher Funkhouser s reflections about the electronic and digital poetry. We also count with the aesthetic proposals of Suzete Venturelli, Anne Cauquelin and Claudia Giannetti. From these readings, we establish an approach to deal with this poetic form. This approach, as an open process of negotiation, emphasizes the link observer-work that aligns with the concepts of interface and interactivity. It is intended to investigate, with this work, elements as the vitality of the experimental technological poetic production of both poets in reveling tensions in our time, exploiting the limits of subjectivity before the new means and collaborating to the humanization of technologies.
