The transformation of the higher education institutions in the post-apartheid era : the South African Research Chairs initiative as an indicatorNkhumeleni, Cebisa 10 1900 (has links)
The study investigated whether the South African Research Chairs and the research programmes of the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation Programme (DST/NRF programmes), have made an effective contribution towards the acceleration of transformation in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in South Africa. The study argues that the implementation of the Higher Education (HE) policies by HEIs and the South African Research Chairs are seriously undermined by legacies of colonialism and apartheid. It is further contended that unless more funds are made available to black students to study full-time, the pillars of democracy of social justice, redress and equality remain meaningless ideological slogans.
Guided by the insights provided by literature review on CDA, the study focuses more on the top-down relations of dominance (policy) that fuels continuing racial discrimination in higher education institutions, which the 2008 Final Report of the Ministerial Higher Education Committee isolated for criticism. The study posits that the thematic structural unifier, which links all the pieces of the multiplicity of the competing ideas and voices and threads through the whole study, is the endless probing and unravelling of the cultural and historical factors that continue to undermine the higher education transformation agenda.
The findings of this study suggest that the policy implementation of the HE transformation agenda continues to be constrained by mismatch between policy objectives and implementation results. The findings also indicate that although the research-driven performance of South African Research Chairs has progressively improved each year and student support and research outputs increased between the 2008/09 and 2009/10 financial years, the direct impact of the SARChI programme can only be determined when performance is measured against the South African Research Chair Holders‟ baseline performance. The data also suggest that despite access to educational services at HEIs improving, the existence of various forms of discriminatory
15
practices, are still employed, a major challenge attributed to the “great man” leadership styles adopted by many university‟s vice chancellors and councils. This evaluation study utilises a small-scale purposive sample composed of three experts, with unstructured in-depth face-to-face interviews conducted with the experts. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. A curriculum framework for consumer learning at a higher education institutionCrafford, S. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Education)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / 287 leaves printed as single pages, preliminary pages i-xxii and numbered pages 1-253. Includes bibliography and appendixes. Digitized at 600 dpi grayscale to pdf format (OCR), using a Bizhub 250 Konica Minolta Scanner. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is aimed at developing a curriculum framework for consumer learning at a
higher education institution, using a case study design.
To determine the need for consumer learning at the Cape Peninsula University of
Technology - the "bounded context" of the study - a situation analysis was
conducted as the first phase of curriculum development. Methods to triangulate data
included the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods, together with a
thorough literature study. The two sets of empirical data were obtained from two
research instruments, namely self-administered survey questionnaires and semistructured
interviews with learning facilitators (lecturers) at the institution.
The survey amongst first-year students was used to assist in the needs assessment
for curriculum development at the CPUT and to determine the knowledge, skills,
values and attitudes of first-year respondents regarding consumer rights and
responsibilities, as well as other consumer-related issues. This not only provided
data to analyse the situation, but also assisted in the planning and development of a
curriculum framework for consumer learning.
The researcher used semi-structured interviews to determine the views and
perceptions of learning facilitators regarding the importance of consumer learning, and to gauge the need for such learning at the institution. Aspects relating to the
contents, teaching strategies, level of introduction, potential for critical crossfield outcomes development, benefits and major obstacles in the implementation and/or
integration into the curriculum were also investigated. The two-tiered situation analysis indicated that students expressed a clear need for
consumer learning at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, especially
regarding the areas of consumer rights and responsibilities. The importance of
consumer learning and the "readiness climate" from the perspective of the learning
facilitators was also clearly established.
The study culminated in the development of a curriculum framework for consumer
learning that is compatible with the requirements of the South African Qualifications Authority and the Higher Education Qualifications Framework in South Africa.
Key findings reported in the form of a curriculum framework could serve as a
guideline for the planning and implementation of a consumer learning programme at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
in Suid-Afrika.

Exploring the potential of African higher education institutions in assisting the New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) to effectively achieve its goalsIipumbu, Rebekka Nangula 12 1900 (has links)
The thesis explores the potential of African higher education institutions in assisting the
New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) in its quest to
affectively achieve its goals. My contention is that higher education institutions need to
be favourably positioned in terms of institutional autonomy and academic freedom to
assist the achievement of the NEPAD goals. Moreover, there is a need for deliberative
democracy, if the NEPAD goals are to be achieved affectively, especially from the
perspective of higher education institutions.

A model for effective curriculum implementation in accredited private higher education institutions in BotswanaRudhumbu, Norman 05 December 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to propose a model (framework) for effective implementation of curricula in accredited Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) operating in a highly regulated higher education environment in Botswana. The study used a mixed methods research approach that employed concurrent triangulation design. A structured questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide were used to collect data on the views of both 306 lecturers and 12 academic middle managers (AMMs) respectively, on how the curriculum is implemented in the accredited PHEIs. Data analysis was done using statistical tables, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Mann Whitney U-Test, regression analysis, correlation analysis and structural equation modelling (SEM).
Results of the study showed that characteristics of the external environment, lecturer, institution as well as characteristics and conception of the curriculum were all statistically, significantly and positively related to effective curriculum implementation in accredited PHEIs and hence acted as predictors of effective curriculum implementation in these institutions. The study also showed that factors in the above predictor variables which included heavy workloads, lack of training on pedagogical issues, limited opportunities for staff development in some of the PHEIs, limited teaching resources as well as a highly regulated higher education environment were major challenges affecting effective curriculum implementation in the PHEIS. It emerged from the study that a 1% improvement on each of the predictor variables could lead to improvements in the way curriculum is currently implemented in these institutions. Based on these results, a framework was proposed for enhancing curriculum implementation in accredited PHEIs. / Inhloso yalolu cwaningo kwabe kuwukuthuthukisa imodeli yokuqaliswa kwekharikhulamu ngempumelelo eziKhungweni Zemfundo Ephakeme Zangasese ezigunyaziwe (ama-PHEI) eziqhuba umsebenzi wazo ngaphansi kwesimo semfundo ephakeme esilawulwa kakhulu. Towards institutional success : an assessment of the practices and challenges of performance management systems in public universities in EthiopiaAklilu Gebreselassie Gebru 11 1900 (has links)
With the aim of identifying the challenges and determining the extent of the effect of these challenges on the effectiveness of the performance management systems, the performance management practices of selected public universities in Ethiopia were assessed. This assessment informed the identification of workable, customised balanced scorecard measurement variables that would ensure effective implementation of performance management systems and promote institutional success in the selected public universities in Ethiopia.
An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was adopted. First, literature was reviewed to learn about major concepts and theories on performance management systems and to establish the laws and directives that regulate performance management at public universities in Ethiopia. Qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires were used to collect data on the practices and the challenges experienced in implementing performance management systems in public universities in Ethiopia.
The main practices and challenges identified include exclusion of employees from planning activities, management bias, supervisors’ failure to give feedback on performance appraisals, lack of experience among many of the professionals in the execution of performance management systems, and high employee turnover.
The study presents and recommends a hexagonal hybrid balanced scorecard measurement model (the newly added variables being leadership and stakeholders) to make Ethiopian higher education institutions effective and efficient in measuring their overall performance.
ʼn Verkennende sekwensiële gemengdemetodeontwerp is gebruik.

O estudo de caso da Faculdade Nossa Cidade - Carapicuíba - SP / Proposed Marketing Management for an Institution of Higher Education: The Case Study of Faculdade Nossa Cidade - Carapicuíba - SPClemente Junior, Sergio dos Santos 08 October 2015 (has links)
The study object of this thesis is the Faculdade Nossa Cidade - FNC. IES in the municipality of Carapicuiba, SP. The Dissertation of the General Purpose was to describe in depth the situational diagnosis of FNC in two different periods in time, as the communication efforts for the dissemination of the Selection Process in 2012 and 2013. As specific objectives, the dissertation aimed to analyze systematically the data collected, evaluate the return on investments in communication IES and propose guidelines for the development of the FNC Communication Campaign for the sale of courses offered. They were used as Methodological Procedures exploratory research with the use of case study, divided into two phases, namely: Phase 1 - Delimitation of theories that support the theoretical framework on Higher Education in Brazil and the current higher education as a \"profitable business\" in addition to the theoretical definition of marketing management for service companies, Investment Return on Communication and Marketing Communication Planning. Stage 2 - Primary Research (interviews with the governing body of IES, with teachers and with students entering and graduating), and Research Secondary - analysis of records of the campaigns of the Selection Process in 2012 and 2013 and the analysis of the results of the Report Committee for Assessment (CPA - 2014). According to the diagnosis introduced to FNC presents significant institutional, pedagogical, financial strengths, marketing, and management and organization. The areas for improvement are the knowledge of senior management and have received attention from the pedagogical direction, which responds by IES with the MEC. The framework and classification of courses offered by the FNC in the BCG Analysis were confirmed by MCP calculation of each of the courses in the evaluation period 2012- 2014. For GE Analysis, after the purposes of the calculation of weighted grades for market attractiveness and the business positioning in its market, FNC was framed as a highly attractive market business and high positioning of the business in your market. The diagnosis has also shown that the FNC takes action to meet the 14 Objectives of Communication and these actions are recognized by the academic community. Analysis of the communication payback indicated that the FNC has economic feasibility, financial and solid equity. As guidelines to Communication Planning for FNC must manage consciously their service promises; it must maintain an open channel of information from the candidates for enrollment in IES and especially with the faculty and student body of the Faculty; It must also educate its stakeholders, particularly students, since its delivery of services is of high share of customer feature throughout the process and must also take care carefully of internal communication with the technical and administrative staff and teachers. All this can help the communication process in order to avoid that generate dissatisfaction by the customer.

Sociabilidade, crítica e posição: o meio arquitetônico, as revistas especializadas e o debate do moderno em São Paulo(1945-1965) / Sociability, criticism and position: the architectonic environment, the specialized magazines and the modern discussion in São Paulo (1945-1965)Dedecca, Paula Gorenstein 07 May 2012 (has links)
This work intends to discuss the unity and plurality of the architectonic environment of São Paulo, through their social networks, professional spaces and critical movements, using as primary source some specialized magazines, published in the city between 1945 and 1965. The study will investigate the relationship between an intellectual group - a parcel of architects working in São Paulo - and its manifestations, seeking to understand the particular space in which some of its professional ties, cultural and ideological exchanges, and projetual attitudes were developed. The first chapter seeks to outline the social networks of those architects, through the intersection of urban space, cultural, professional and academic institutions. The second chapter studies the local criticism - their intellectual approaches, disarticulations, fractures and dislocations - across their inner dialogues and their different looks launched on Brazilian contemporary architecture, especially the one produced in Rio de Janeiro. Finally, the third chapter aims to approach the projectual dialogues between the local architects through the analysis of some architectural competition held in São Paulo in the period and that found an echo in local architecture magazines.

Text in English / The purpose of the study was to describe and explore the experiences of student nurses in caring for mental health users with profound intellectual disabilities in one of the care and rehabilitation centre at Gauteng province incorporating the Common Sense Model. Qualitative descriptive and explorative research was conducted to explore the experiences of student caring for mental health care users with profound intellectual disabilities and to recommend the best practices in caring for mental health care users with profound intellectual disabilities. Data collection was done using reflective diaries and in depth interviews. Twelve participants participated in the study. The study composed of student nurses (n=12) caring for mental health care users with profound intellectual disabilities. Five themes emerged from the study i.e. emotionally challenging, communication difficulties, lack of knowledge on the nature of intellectual disability, burden of care and mixed feelings. Findings of the study revealed that completing nurses find working with profound intellectual disabilities to be emotionally challenging and that negative experiences outweigh the positive experiences, resulting in their reluctance to want to work with profound intellectual disability users. It is therefore incumbent upon policy makers and hospital administrators to take cognisance of these negative feelings so that ways of minimising these frustrations and promoting the wellbeing of nurses caring for mental health care users with profound intellectual disabilities are promoted. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Student Recruitment for the Mobile Generation : An Exploratory Study of Mobile Marketing Practices in the International Higher Education IndustryZinn, Marian, Johansson, Helen January 2015 (has links)
Background: In an increasingly market-driven and global higher education industry, characterized by growing international competition and the emergence of disruptive mobile technologies, higher education institutions (HEIs) are challenged to adopt innovative ways of marketing for student recruitment to sustain student enrollment numbers. Within this new landscape the concept of mobile marketing for student recruitment has become an important issue for HEIs. Mobile devices are playing an increasingly significant role in the decision-making process of potential students and this trend has created the need to adopt new forms of marketing through mobile devices to stay relevant with a new mobile generation of students. Purpose: Despite the growing significance of mobile marketing for HEIs, little is still known about the phenomenon of mobile marketing for student recruitment within a higher education setting. Hence, the purpose of this thesis was to fill this knowledge gap by exploring how and why mobile marketing can be used during the student recruitment process from the perspective of education-marketing practitioners. Method: The research gap addressed in this thesis called for existing mobile marketing concepts to be introduced to the field of higher education marketing. Hence, in alignment with abductive reasoning, the starting point of the research was the creation of a theoretical framework that integrates theory on mobile marketing tools with the student recruitment process. Subsequently, through a collective case study design, exploratory qualitative research was undertaken amongst ten universities and four education-marketing agencies to learn about exemplary cases of mobile marketing practice in HEIs. Empirical data was collected from semi-structured interviews with 16 informants, as well as relevant documents to gain a rich understanding of the phenomenon of mobile marketing for recruiting new students. Results & Contribution: This thesis extends the higher education marketing literature by making a first contribution towards conceptualising mobile marketing for student recruitment. The empirical study revealed ten major categories of mobile student recruitment tactics to engage with potential students on mobile devices, and provides new insights on how and for what purpose these tools can be used to recruit new students. Furthermore, a conceptual model of mobile marketing for student recruitment was developed, which helps to understand how mobile marketing can be applied to the student recruitment process. The study is particularly relevant for education marketers, as it provides practitioners with new knowledge about the opportunities presented by mobile marketing channels to communicate with their main target audience. Specifically, the study provides empirical evidence of mobile marketing practices in the industry and a set of specific recommendations. Additionally, the new model may provide a framework for developing a mobile recruitment strategy for HEIs.
