Lecturers' tools and strategies in university mathematics teaching : an ethnographic study

Mali, Angeliki January 2016 (has links)
The thesis presents the analytical process and the findings of a study on: lecturers teaching practice with first year undergraduate mathematics modules; and lecturers knowledge for teaching with regard to students mathematical meaning making (understanding). Over three academic semesters, I observed and audio-recorded twenty-six lecturers teaching to a small group tutorial of two to eight first year students, and I discussed with the lecturers about their underlying considerations for teaching. The analysis of this thesis focuses on a characterisation of each of three (of the twenty-six) lecturers teaching, which I observed for more than one semester. I chose the teaching of three experienced lecturers, due to diversity in terms of ways of engaging the students with the mathematics, and due to my consideration of their commitment to teaching for students mathematical meaning making. The distinctive nature of the study is concerned with the conceptualisation of university mathematics teaching practice and knowledge within a Vygotskian perspective. In particular, I used for the characterisation of teaching practice and of teaching knowledge the notions tool-mediation and dialectic from Vygotskian theory. I also used a coding process grounded to the data and informed by existing research literature in mathematics education. I conceptualised teaching practice into tools for teaching and actions with tools for teaching (namely strategies). I then conceptualised teaching knowledge as the lecturers reflection on teaching practice. The thesis contributes to the research literature in mathematics education with an analytical framework of teaching knowledge which is revealed in practice, the Teaching Knowledge-in-Practice (TKiP). TKiP analyses specific kinds of lecturer s knowing for teaching: didactical knowing and pedagogical knowing. The framework includes emerging tools for teaching (e.g. graphical representation, rhetorical question, students faces) and emerging strategies for teaching (e.g. creating students positive feelings, explaining), which were common or different among the three lecturers teaching practice. Overall, TKiP is produced to offer a dynamic framework for researcher analysis of university mathematics teaching knowledge. Analysis of teaching knowledge is important for gaining insights into why teaching practice happens in certain ways. The findings of the thesis also suggest teaching strategies for the improvement of students mathematical meaning making in tutorials.

The target was to identify the representations of the practices from these professors and the impact of habitus on field in its formative process. It was initially considered that these professionals who teach technical subjects, have no specific training (educational) to conduct such classes, but may have inventive teaching practices that were holding during their academic and professional career, and that through them, mediate learning. The methodology option for the development this work was to conduct qualitative research through a questionnaire profile and semi-structured interviews with professors without pedagogical training from two higher education institutions. These tools aim to capture the representation of a group of professors of humanities and Exact on their teaching practices, teacher training and their careers. The author presents the theoretical framework that question issues related to teacher education within higher education with emphasis on: Cunha (2007), Perrenoud (2002), Tardif (2002), Pimenta and Anastasiou (2002) and Nóvoa (1997). For the interviews analyses with the prospect to understanding the representation and the teaching practices, we used part of the theorist framework developed by Pierre Bourdieu, and also the discussion of the instrumental view of Curriculum and pedagogical training. This study enabled us to demonstrate that professors on higher education who participated in this study using a set of techniques, practices, knowledge and behaviors they have learned in specific courses for training teachers, or even pedagogy, especially since not attended. Their development as teachers occurs largely from its past and its coexistence school professional.

Based on a dialectic and historical orientation, mainly, with the contributions of Antonio Gramsci and authors linked to the theoretical and methodological perspective of Marx, it was led the investigation process with procedures and used resources by the bibliographic and empiric research of ethnographic type. Answering to the challenges of the problem previous delimitated, we decided to divide the exposition in four distinct and complementary chapters. Initially, we present a reflection about the concepts and essential implications to the understanding of the thematic referred, specially, in relation to the particularities and senses that hold the terms culture, esthetic, art and education. Based on the reference of Gramsci, we develop, at the second chapter, the analysis of some aspects of the complex social-cultural context in which the life and the knowing of the denominated simple man are processed. The third chapter deals with the deciding, social-historic and contradictories concepts, related to the religion, devotion and tradition phenomenon. At the last chapter, when we articulate the several concepts, we also analyze the aspects that involve a concrete educative situation and shared by worshipper artists of Santos Reis in their courses, meetings and singing moments around the neighborhoods in Goiânia, aiming the comprehension of the mediations, appropriation and socialization of the artistic knowing produced on a determined social-cultural context with their continuities and ruptures. At this research, it was noticed the understanding of the education as an essential phenomenon of constitution, appropriation and transformation of the popular culture, like a social practice historically sited and interested, returned to the concretization of certain desires and attitudes, makings and knowings, ways of being and living, which demands symbolic and material mediations, social interactions and mutual helping, constant repetitions and improved masteries. Besides, it was confirmed the necessity of deepening about the education that it is processed in different moments and spaces of the social life.
