Text in Afrikaans / Bevrydingsonderwys is 'n verskynsel \vat wereldwyd voorkom.
Education for liberation is a world-\"ide phenomenon. However, it is not named the same throughout the world.
Popular Education in Latin America, Progressive Education in the USA Socialistic Education in Tanzania en People's Education in the RSA can, for instance, all be viewed as examples of education for liberation.
In this study the origin, development and nature of the above-mentioned forms of education are described and compared. Firstly, the origin and development of Popular Education and the views of inter alia Paulo Freire and Antonio Gramsci regarding the relationship between education, liberation and change are discussed.
Thereafter, the historical development of Progressive Education, Socialistic Education and People's Education are described and discussed.

Onderwysersopleiding vir uitkomste-gebaseerde onderwys in Suid-AfrikaDreyer, Johannes Machiel 11 1900 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / This study was undertaken because of the realisation that a new approach to
teacher education will have to be followed if teachers are to be empowered to teach
within the framework of the new educational dispensation, Curriculum 2005.
Because such a change implies a new curriculumfor teacher training there is a
need for research on how providers will have to adapttheir training approach and
curriculum to meet the challeng.es of Curriculum 2005.
In this study the development of a model for outcomes-based learning programme
design is undertaken.
To achieve this:
outcomes-based education systems in the USA, Australie, New Zealand, Canada
and England are investigated;
he unique model of outcomes-based education that is being implemented in Soutr
Africa is described and explained;
requirements for the training of teachers in the context of outcomes-based
education and Curriculum 2005 are identified and described;
a model for outcomes-based learning programme design is developed to serve as a
possible framework for the design of learning programmes for teaeher education for
outcomes-based education in South-Africa.
The study shows that outcomes-based teacher education has received only scant
attention in the rest of the world. It is also shown that the design of learning
programmes for outcomes-based education requires a somewhat different
approach than traditional curriculum design, where content play such a dominant
role.
A model for outcomes-based teacher.education is suggested to facilitate the
development of such programmes. It is hoped that the model will be of use and that
it will contribute to sensible learning programmes which will empower teachers to
function successfully in an outcomes-based education system.

Tolerance in multicultural education : development of interventionstrategies for educatorsCox, Cheryl Pearl 06 1900 (has links)
Multicultural education is only one of the major changes, which have occurred since the
inception of the new democracy in South Africa. However, this inevitable change has
resulted in many challenges for both educators and educational institutions.
A literature study was done to discuss and clarity concepts of multicultural education,
culture, race, ethnicity, bias and anti-bias. The perspectives, principles and history of
multicultural education in the United States of America, Britain and South Africa were also
investigated.
An exploratory study, using a qualitative research design, was done to investigate
educators' viewpoints on multicultural education in schools. The results of the investigation
indicate that there is a lack of tolerance in schools and that educators require training and
intervention strategies to help them cope with the changes in a multicultural education
system in South Africa.
Recommendations regarding training and policy implementation were discussed and
intervention strategies for educators have been given. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (with specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

In
Multicultural education is the consequence of universal trends towards democratisation.
The United States of America, Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa were selected as
exemplars to investigate the emergence of multicultural education. There are distinct similarities
between this process and that of the development of segregated monocultural education systems.
Opposition to the exclusive nature of monocultural education resulted in the establishment and
implementation of multicultural education.
In the United States of America multicultural education is enforced by legislation. Multicultural
education in Zimbabwe is not applied as stringently. Zimbabwe's educational model emphasises
Africanisation and the preparation for life, also proficiency in dealing with cultural diversity.
Education in the Republic of South Africa remains segregated and predominately monocultural.
From the policy documents of those parties interested in education it seems that any future
educational dispensation will follow a course similar to that of Zimbabwe. The teaching of
societal skills enjoys precedence. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Historical Education)

The effects of a culturally translated school counselor-led intervention on Hispanic students' academic achievementUnknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of implementing a school counselor-led intervention, a culturally translated version of the Student Success Skills (SSS) program, on student academic achievement in Hispanic students. The research question investigated in this study was: Does Hispanic student participation in the culturally translated Student Success Skills classroom guidance program increase academic achievement as measured by state mandated standardized reading and math tests? Based on the fact that Hispanic students are at a very high risk of academic failure, there is an urgent need to address the lack of academic success. The cultural translation of the Student Success Skills (SSS) program focuses on student outcomes and helps to provide a link between school counselors and improved outcomes for Hispanic students. The sample for this study included 103 treatment and 98 comparison fourth and fifth grade students from three schools in South Florida. Participating students were selected from all Hispanic students at four schools in South Florida, by selecting the students who spoke mainly Spanish at home and came from Hispanic backgrounds. Academic achievement was measured using a standardized, objective, state-wide assessment instrument, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The procedure used to analyze the results for this study was a Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). The statistical analysis showed that the treatment group scored significantly higher than the comparison group in reading. There was not a significant difference in math for the treatment group. When fidelity of treatment was investigated a post hoc analysis found that groups with full implementation of the program scored significantly higher in math and in reading than the comparison group. / The results of this study show that a cultural translation of the Student Success Skills program is helpful for the fourth and fifth grade Hispanic students improving achievement in reading. / by Ana Maria Leon. / Vita. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. The Economic Impact of Veteran Status: The Effect of Veteran and Demographic Statuses on Household IncomeStandridge, Daniel 24 July 2013 (has links)
Determining the effects of military service on those who volunteer is of vital importance in an age when service may lead to the loss of bodily function or life. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of military service with consideration for the demographic statuses of race, gender, and educational attainment on economic outcomes. Data for this study came from the Current Population Survey July 2010 with Veterans Supplement (N=83,000). Results from this study suggest that some veterans, namely those of minority racial status and lower educational attainment benefit from their military serve by achieving increased levels of household income as compared to similar non-veterans. Conversely, non-Hispanic White veterans and those with higher levels of educational attainment suffer negative consequences to levels of household income. Furthermore, differences among veterans were assessed. These results provide further insight into the experiences of veterans in the United States.

Lighting the Fire: How Peer-Mentoring Helps Adult Learners Increase Their Interest in STEM Careers: A Case Study at the Community College LevelDeTurk, Patricia Marie 08 August 2013 (has links)
In the U.S., about 7,000 high school students drop out each school day, representing a loss of talent and ability. Concurrently, there are a decreasing number of enrolled students taking science-related courses at the high school and college levels. Adults, who return to obtain their General Educational Development (GED) certification, are an untapped resource that could be steered toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. In this case study, 15 GED students were shown a STEM video, and then peer mentored by 8 CLA (Clinical Laboratory Assistant) students, in a student-centered laboratory experience. Individual interviews of the GED students prior to and after the treatment were used to assess STEM attitudes. Additionally, the CLA peer mentors were given self-assessments regarding their level of self-efficacy. The most marked difference in the pre- and post-treatment data was with the male GED students. Initially, only 2 of the 7 had definite career goals, 5 with undefined career goals, with 4 showing no interest in STEM. After the treatment, 6 exhibited interest in pursuing STEM education or employment. The female GED students' interest remained unchanged, resulting in the male and female students showing equivalent interest in STEM post-treatment. The CLA peer mentors showed an increase in self-efficacy using Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy in social cognition (1997). The preliminary results of this study suggest that interest in STEM education and STEM careers can be generated with peer mentored learning. (Contains 1 figure and 8 tables.)
