Orchestrating effective practices in developmental math : redesign in developmental education within an academic success centerLevine-Brown, Patricia Anne 20 January 2015 (has links)
Developmental mathematics courses are intended to help underprepared students but often are a barrier for hundreds of students who fail these courses. High failure rates prevent students from achieving their academic goals, therefore; educational institutions are looking for methods to increase success in these courses. Such was the case at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), where high failure rates in developmental mathematics presented problems to the institution and its students. To increase pass rates in developmental education courses, a college-wide redesign initiative introduced in 2009 led to the implementation of a research-based model for developmental education. This model would be implemented in the form of Academic Success Centers (ASC) incorporating practices tailored to increase student success and persistence. To examine success rates of students taking developmental education courses in the ASCs, the College conducted a longitudinal predictive analytics study known as the Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID). The CHAID analyzed student success and retention of 10,051 developmental mathematics students over two academic terms. Additionally, the CHAID identified highly successful developmental mathematics teachers. These teachers, and the environment in which they taught (ASCs), became the basis of this qualitative study. The purpose of the study was two-fold. First, it focused on identifying pedagogical practices of highly successful developmental mathematics faculty who taught in the Academic Success Centers at FSCJ. Second, it focused on the areas of impact of the ASC as an environmental factor in student success. Data collected through observations, interviews, and documented analysis, along with the use of text mining, revealed that patterns emerged among participants in which they shared common beliefs about the importance of communicating with students, forming relationships with students, lecture and lab practices, the availability of physical resources, and the availability of academic support services within the environment where they interacted with their students. The intent of using the evidence from the key findings is to provide community college leaders with insight into pedagogical practices shared by highly successful developmental mathematics teachers and the role the learning environment serves in meeting students’ educational needs. / text

The aim of this work is to analyze the management and the pedagogical practices which the professionals develop in an educational institution – hereinafter “Green School” (“Escola Verde”), from the education institute of the state of Minas Gerais, in Brazil –, as well as to verify its relation to the positive results obtained on PROEB (Evaluation of the public education of Minas Gerais), especially on the historical series of the years 2009 and 2012. This relation is considered from a study case, with a qualitative approach and the theoretical support by Lück (2009), Polon (2011, 2012), Soares (2002, 2007), Brooke (2012), Silva Junior and Ferretti (2004), Silva (2010), Pérez Gómez (2009), Saul (2009), Scartezini and Viana (2012), Marafelli (2012), Gazólis (2012) and Alves and Parisotto (2012). In order to analyze this reality, we used semi structured interviews with directors, supervisors and teachers from this school. The choice on the theme is justified by the role of the researcher as “Analista Educacional” (a post on the state translated by “Educational Analyst”), who participated of the routing of educational activities in the schools. The main results of this research are linked to the effective practices detected in the school, from which it is proposed an Educational Action Plan that has as its main aim to suggest a new option on continued formation, based on the initial institutional evaluation. The Educational Action Plan evolves both the management of the system, the SRE São João del Rei, and the schools’ management. The actions for being developed in these two instances are going to be based on an institutional evaluation process and intend to promote the improvement of the system management and the school management, through organizational changes and the development of effective practices.

Congo / construction of written language among adults in multilingual environment : case of Alliance française de Kinshasa / DR CongoMpoyi Cilo, Norbert 17 December 2015 (has links)
Abstract :This research study in the field of socio-discursive interactionism focuses on scriptural competence of adult learners in a multilingual context. It questions the real practices of teachers with a view to describing what they do when they teach writing skills. Inspired by the theories of didactic transposition on the one hand, taught objects on the other, an ecological research methodology has been implemented in classes of French as a foreign or second language (FFL/FSL) for adult learners at the Alliance Française in Kinshasa, R.D. Congo. Data were collected from the interactions based on a didactic option focusing on textual genre. The qualitative analysis of teacher regulations highlights two different approaches to teaching writing skills. The first is essentially linguistic, whilst the second tends towards a communicative approach which didactically speaking, opens up a space in which an approach by textual genres would have a legitimate and beneficial place. Keywords: Effective Practices of teachers – scriptural competence - taught subject – writing skills - multilingual environment - adults - textual genre

This work aims to analyze how the school leaders and teachers appropriate on the results from the Permanent Evaluation System of Basic Education from Ceará/Brazil (Sistema Permanente de Avaliação da Educação Básica do Ceará - SPAECE), using them as elements to the improvement of teaching practices in the state high schools under the jurisdiction by the 18th Regional Coordination of Educational Development (18ª Coordenadoria Regional de Desenvolvimento da Educação - CREDE). Despite the teachers’ difficulties referred to the proper use of data from this evaluation, the schools promote moments of study to appropriate on it, in order to implement a more coherent work with actual learning needs of their students. It contributed to these educational institutions reached increment and better results on SPAECE, between all the schools from 18th CREDE, in the period of 2009 to 2011. Through a qualitative research in the form of a case study, we realized how the teachers appropriate on these results in order to reflect on their practice, and how they have used this information on educational efforts to improve their work in classroom. This practice has been recurrent in the schools and, therefore, we conducted semi-structured interviews with managers and teachers of Portuguese Language and Mathematics from the both institutions. The choice on this issue is justified by the need of the schools improve indicators of student performance, and by the great potential that SPAECE has for the reflection on teaching practice, both to improve the work in the classroom and to promote a more equitable education. Our hypothesis is that the appropriation of these results has contributed to the improvement of students performances, since it promotes reflection and the resizing of classroom activities. From the observation of the professionals practices in these two schools, and in order to institutionalize it, we propose a Plan of Educational Action focused on the creation of a Center for the Study of External Evaluation (NEAE), on the extent of the 18th CREDE, in order to promote teacher’s trainings, planning and monitoring of actions for the external evaluation and its results in primary education schools.
