[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DA SEGURANÇA DE UM QUEBRA-MAR SOBRE ARGILA MOLE / [en] SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF A BREAKWATER ON SOFT CLAY

ANA LUIZA ROSSINI VALENTE DE OLIVEIRA 12 September 2019 (has links)
[en] This work aims at applying available methods of probabilistic analysis for assessing the stability of a breakwater built on soft clay at the Sergipe Terminal, gathering information on the existent materials in the field and a statistical analysis of the geotechnical parameters, emphasizing the inherent variability as part of the research. Three probabilistic techniques of analysis have been used: FOSM, Point Estimates and Monte Carlo Simulation. The hypotheses, calculation steps and basic concepts of reliability index and probability of failure are presented, with brief discussions on the different limit equilibrium procedures used for polygonal surfaces. Three scenarios were studied, regarding the soft clay parameters: total stress analysis, considering undrained loading, effective stress analysis with effective friction angle from triaxial tests, and effective stress analysis with effective friction angle from back analysis of a previous failure. For the three scenarios, the probability of failure values were, respectively around: 1/70, 1/2100 and 1/30. Besides this, when using the FOSM and Point Estimates probabilistic techniques, the results proved to be more conservative, in comparison to Monte Carlo Simulation.

Thermo-hydro-mécanique des milieux poreux déformables avec double porosité et non-équilibre thermique local / Thermo-hydro-mechanical study of deformable porous media with double porosity in local thermal non-equilibrium

Gelet, Rachel 23 September 2011 (has links)
A fully coupled constitutive model is presented for a rigorous analysis of deformation, hydraulic and heat flows in saturated dual porosity media subject to thermo-hydro-mechanical loadings including those able to cause local thermal non-equilibrium. The solid phase is assumed to contain two distinct cavities: the porous blocks and the fissure network. The governing equations are derived based on the equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Solution to the governing equations is obtained numerically using the finite element approach. The capabilities of the model address two energy applications: the stability of a borehole in a thermally enhanced oil recovery context and the heat extraction of enhanced geothermal systems. Substantial differences, particularly in the effective stress response, highlight the major influence of the dual porosity model and the importance of the local thermal non-equilibrium assumption to predict the behaviour of fractured media.

Strength and deformability of fractured rocks

Noorian-Bidgoli, Majid January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents a systematic numerical modeling framework to simulate the stress-deformation and coupled stress-deformation-flow processes by performing uniaxial and biaxial compressive tests on fractured rock models with considering the effects of different loading conditions, different loading directions (anisotropy), and coupled hydro-mechanical processes for evaluating strength and deformability behavior of fractured rocks. By using code UDEC of discrete element method (DEM), a series of numerical experiments were conducted on discrete fracture network models (DFN) at an established representative elementary volume (REV), based on realistic geometrical and mechanical data of fracture systems from field mapping at Sellafield, UK. The results were used to estimate the equivalent Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio and to fit the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown failure criteria, represented by equivalent material properties defining these two criteria. The results demonstrate that strength and deformation parameters of fractured rocks are dependent on confining pressures, loading directions, water pressure, and mechanical and hydraulic boundary conditions. Fractured rocks behave nonlinearly, represented by their elasto-plastic behavior with a strain hardening trend. Fluid flow analysis in fractured rocks under hydro-mechanical loading conditions show an important impact of water pressure on the strength and deformability parameters of fractured rocks, due to the effective stress phenomenon, but the values of stress and strength reduction may or may not equal to the magnitude of water pressure, due to the influence of fracture system complexity. Stochastic analysis indicates that the strength and deformation properties of fractured rocks have ranges of values instead of fixed values, hence such analyses should be considered especially in cases where there is significant scatter in the rock and fracture parameters. These scientific achievements can improve our understanding of fractured rocks’ hydro-mechanical behavior and are useful for the design of large-scale in-situ experiments with large volumes of fractured rocks, considering coupled stress-deformation-flow processes in engineering practice. / <p>QC 20141111</p>

Static and seismic responses of pile-supported marine structures under scoured conditions

Jiang, Wenyu 30 November 2021 (has links)
Scour is a process of removing soils around foundations by currents and waves. For the pile-supported marine structures such as the monopile-supported offshore wind turbines (OWTs) and the pile-supported bridges, scour can decrease the pile capacities and alter the dynamic responses of the structures. At present, there is not a widely accepted method to estimate pile axial or lateral capacity under scoured conditions. For example, different recommendations are used among the existing design standards for estimation of the vertical effective stress and the resulting capacities for single piles under different scour conditions. None of the existing standards or design practice has even considered the scour effects on the behavior of pile groups. Furthermore, the investigation into the responses of piles under multiple hazards of scour and earthquakes is rarely reported. To address the foregoing limitations, this study first introduces an analytical solution to determining the vertical effective stress of soils around single isolated piles under scoured conditions and uses it to examine the limitations of the existing standards in estimation of pile tensile capacity (Chapter 1). The effect of soil-pile interface friction is highlighted. Next, the study proposes new approaches to investigating the combined effects of scour and earthquakes on the lateral responses of the monopile-supported OWTs in sand (Chapter 2) and soft clay (Chapter 3). Lastly, simple and practical methods are developed based on the p-y curve framework for analyzing the lateral responses of pile groups in sand (Chapter 4) and soft clay (Chapter 5) subjected to static lateral loading. The proposed methods in this study were encoded into a series of open-source computer scripts for engineering practice. They were verified with the 3D continuum finite element (FE) analyses. Using the proposed methods, standard methods, and 3D FE method, parametric analyses were conducted to investigate the scour effects on the lateral behavior of the monopile-supported OWTs under crustal earthquakes and that of the pile groups under static loading. The factors considered in the parametric study included effects of scour-hole dimensions, soil stress history, soil density, soil-pile interface behavior, soil liquefaction potential, pile group configurations, etc. Through the parametric analyses, the standard methods were critically assessed by comparing the results to those calculated by the proposed methods and 3D FE methods, and some design-related issues were also discussed. / Graduate

Transient Seepage in a Variably Saturated Levee: Laboratory Testing, Field Monitoring and Numerical Modeling

Rivera-Hernandez, Xavier Arnaldo 14 December 2018 (has links)
Several hydraulic loadings impose earthen levees to time-dependent variably saturated seepage conditions. The main objective of this study is to improve the analysis of levees under transient seepage with the use of unsaturated soil mechanics. An extensive set of laboratory testing, field monitoring and numerical modeling are performed to analyze a silty sand setback levee located near Seattle, WA. In-situ data obtained from field monitoring are used to monitor suction and effective stress within the levee’s embankment and foundation over the past two years. Soil samples taken from the site are used to perform index, water retention, and unsaturated multi-stage triaxial tests in the laboratory. A finite element model of transient seepage under saturated-unsaturated conditions is then developed and calibrated to reasonably match the field data. The results highlight the need to consider unsaturated soil mechanics along with climatic variables and soil-atmosphere interaction when analyzing levees under transient seepage conditions.

Experimental Investigations On Near-Threshold Events On Fatigue Crack Growth

Yamada, Yoshinori 11 December 2009 (has links)
In the past, the disagreement of near-threshold fatigue-crack growth (FCG) rate data generated from constant Kmax tests, high load ratio (minimum to maximum load) constant R tests, and ΔKeff based data was a mysterious issue. Because of the disagreement, a variety of test or analysis methods were created to correlate FCG rate data. It was suspected that the ASTM threshold test method using load reduction was inducing remote crack closure due to plastically deformed material, which caused elevated thresholds and slower rates than steady-state behavior. The first goal of this study was the development of a test method to eliminate remote closure during threshold testing. In order to avoid/minimize remote closure effect, compression-precracking methods were used to initiate a crack from a starter notch on compact specimens. Two materials with different fatigue crack surface profiles (flat or very rough) were tested and the results generated from the conventional ASTM precracking method and the compression-precracking test method were compared. In order to understand the disagreement of near-threshold data, crack-opening load measurements were performed from locally (near crack tip) installed strain gages instead of the remote gage (i.e., back face gage). Some careful specimen preparations were performed to avoid out-of-plane bending, to maintain straight crack fronts, and to ensure testing system linearity. It was known that remote gages, such as crack-mouth- opening-displacement-gages were insensitive to measuring load-strain records near threshold. By using local gages, the crack closure effects were clearly observed even in high load ratio (R) tests, like or higher than R = 0.7, and constant Kmax tests, which were believed to be crack closure free. By measuring load-reduced-strain records from local gages, crack-opening loads were able to correlate FCG rate data and showed that ΔKeff-rate data was unique for a wide variety of materials. By comparing (ΔKeff)th values, it may provide reasonable guidance for the material resistance against FCG. Because of “high R crack closure”, some theories considered in the past may need to be reconsidered. First, constant Kmax tests are not entirely crack-closure free. Second, there is no critical load ratio, Rc, to indicate the transition from crack-closure affected to crack-closure free data, and Kmax effects that appear in ΔKth-Kmax relations. Research has shown that the three dominate crack-closure mechanisms (plasticity-, roughness- and debris-induced crack closure) FCG rate behavior in the threshold regime from low to high load ratios.

[en] FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION MODELLING BY ACCUMULATED DAMAGE INSIDE PLASTIC ZONE / [pt] MODELAGEM DA PROPAGAÇÃO DA TRINCA DE FADIGA ATRAVÉS DO DANO ACUMULADO NA ZONA PLÁSTICA

SAMUEL ELIAS FERREIRA 13 December 2018 (has links)
[en] After identify that a fatigue crack remains closed during part of the load cycle, Elber assumed the damage was induced only by the cycle part over the load required to open the crack. Several models were developed based on Delta Keff as the strip-yield ones, which are widely used to predict residual lives of cracked components. Although the crack closure phenomenon is well proven its actual significance for the propagation is still controversial. Others mechanisms, beyond the crack closure, were used in trying to explain the sequence effects on variable amplitude crack propagation like the residual stress field ahead of the crack tip. However even after more than 50 years of research since the first propagation rule proposed by Paris there is no neither about the mechanism neither about modelling. This work has the aim of present a modelling to predict fatigue crack growth based on the hypothesis that the damage accumulated by cyclic plastic strain would be propagation the drive force. The modelling proposed differs from others damage accumulation models by allowing the existed contact between the crack surfaces to exercise its influence on plastic strain ahead of the crack tip. The results show that the proposed model is able to reproduce propagation curves similar to the model strip-yield.

Comportement cyclique et en fatigue d'un alliage cuivreux injecté sous pression / Cyclic and fatigue behaviour of an industrial high pressure die cast brass

Flégeau, Grégory 18 September 2013 (has links)
These research works deal with the investigation of the cyclique and fatigue behaviour of an industrial high-pressure die cast brass. Mechanical tests highlight relatively important changes of elasticity domain during monotonic loading, mainly due to changes of the internal stress. This study was conducted under different scales of observation. TEM observations enabled hypothesis to explain the "original" cyclic behaviour of the alloy. Fatigue tests showed that fatigue life of the material is quite dependent of the presence of defects that may be due to manufacture process. A simplified version of a multi-mechanism model was used to simulate the cyclic behaviour of the study alloy.

Comparison of geoenvironmental properties of caustic and noncaustic oil sand fine tailings

Miller, Warren Gregory 11 1900 (has links)
A study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of volume decrease and strength gain for oil sand fine tailings resulting from a change in bitumen extraction process (caustic versus non-caustic) and the effect of adding a coagulant to caustic fine tailings. Laboratory flume deposition tests were carried out with the objective to hydraulically deposit oil sand tailings and compare the effects of extraction processes on the nature of beach deposits in terms of geometry, particle size distribution, and density. A good correlation exists between flume deposition tests results using oil sand tailings and the various other tailings materials. These comparisons show the reliability and effectiveness of flume deposition tests in terms of establishing general relationships and can serve as a guide to predict beach slopes. Fine tailings were collected from the various flume tests and a comprehensive description of physical and chemical characteristics of the different fine tailings was carried out. The characteristics of the fine tailings is presented in terms of index properties, mineralogy, specific surface area, water chemistry, liquid limits, particle size distribution and structure. The influence of these fundamental properties on the compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength properties of the fine tailings was assessed. Fourteen two meter and one meter high standpipe tests were instrumented to monitor the rate and magnitude of self-weight consolidation of the different fine tailings materials. Consolidation tests using slurry consolidometers were carried out to determine consolidation properties, namely compressibility and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the effect of adding a coagulant (calcium sulphate [CaSO4]) to caustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of the fine tailings was examined by measuring shear strength over time using a vane shear apparatus. A difference in water chemistry during bitumen extraction was concluded to be the cause of substantial differences in particle size distributions and degree of dispersion of the comparable caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The degree of dispersion was consistent with predictions for dispersed clays established by the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values for these materials. The biggest advantage of non-caustic fine tailings and treating caustic fine tailings with coagulant is an increased initial settlement rate and slightly increased hydraulic conductivity at higher void ratios. Thereafter, compressibility and hydraulic conductivity are governed by effective stress. The chemical characteristics of fine tailings (water chemistry, degree of dispersion) do not have a significant impact on their compressibility behaviour and have only a small influence at high void ratio (low effective stress). Fine tailings from a caustic based extraction process had relatively higher shear strengths than comparable non-caustic fine tailings at equivalent void ratios. However, shear strength differences were small and the overall impact on consolidation behaviour, which also depends on compressibility and hydraulic conductivity, is not expected to be significant.
