Electricity consumption and battery lifespan estimation for transit electric buses: drivetrain simulations and electrochemical modelling

Franca, Anaissia 19 March 2018 (has links)
This thesis presents a battery electric bus energy consumption model (ECONS-M) coupled with an electrochemical battery capacity fade model (CFM). The underlying goals of the project were to develop analytical tools to support the integration of battery electric buses. ECONS-M projects the operating costs of electric bus and the potential emission reductions compared to diesel vehicles for a chosen transit route. CFM aims to predict the battery pack lifetime expected under the specific driving conditions of the route. A case study was run for a transit route in Victoria, BC chosen as a candidate to deploy a 2013 BYD electric bus. The novelty of this work mainly lays in its application to battery electric buses, as well as in the coupling of the ECONS-M and the electrochemical model to predict how long the batteries can last if the electric bus is deployed on a specific transit route everyday. An in-depot charging strategy is the only strategy examined in this thesis due to the charging rate limitations of the electrochemical model. The ECONS-M is currently being utilized in industry for the preparations of Phase I and II of the Pan-Canadian Electric Bus Demonstration & Integration Trial led by the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC). This project aims to deploy up to 20 battery electric buses for phase I and 60 electric buses for phase II across Canada to support the standardization of overhead fast chargers and in-depot chargers, which in a first in the world. At this time, the developed CFM can not support any final claims due to the lack of electrochemical data in the literature for the high capacity lithium-ion cells used in electric buses. This opens the door to more research in the ageing testing of batteries for heavy-duty applications. / Graduate

Instabilidades cinéticas em sistemas eletroquímicos: uma contribuição teórica / Kinetic instabilities in electrochemical systems: a theoretical contribution

Nascimento, Melke Augusto do 09 December 2011 (has links)
More than just an exotic phenomenon, oscillations of potential and current are often found in several electrochemical systems. Although oscillatory processes at solid/liquid electrified interfaces have been reported a long time ago, just few theoretical studies have been done so far. This Thesis comprises two parts: the first one analyzes kinetic instabilities observed in electrochemical systems by using a model consisting of three non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations that represent a prototype of the complex behavior observed in electrocatalytic systems. Specifically, this prototype captures the general characteristics of electrochemical oscillators that display a negative differential resistance partially hidden for an N-shaped current/potential curve. The model was studied using conventional analyses and stability diagrams, Lyapunov exponents and the evaluation of the period of oscillations. From the stability diagrams it was possible to describe the behavior of the system taking into consideration the homoclinic Shilnikov condition. The Lyapunov and period analyses showed in a very detailed manner the chaotic and periodic behavior of the model, where it is observed the existence of self-organized structures in the domains of periodicity on a chaotic background. Those structures are known as shrimps. The observation of such structures that are also found in other systems reinforces the idea of structural universality for codimension two phenomena. The second part of the Thesis deals with the analysis of the oscillatory drift by using multivariate analysis techniques to an experimental time series obtained for the electroxidation of methanol on polycrystalline Pt. The results showed that it is possible to describe the influence of the drift during the oscillatory behavior by means of three variables that act on the surface of the electrode.

Prediction and analysis of model’s parameters of Li-ion battery cells

Dareini, Ali January 2016 (has links)
Lithium-ion batteries are complex systems and making a simulation model of them is always challenging. A method for producing an accurate model with high capabilities for predicting the behavior of the battery in a time and cost efficient way is desired in this field of work. The aim of this thesis has been to develop a method to be close to the desired method as much as possible, especially in two important aspects, time and cost. The method which is the goal of this thesis should fulfill the below five requirements: 1. Able to produce a generic battery model for different types of lithium-ion batteries 2. No or low cost for the development of the model 3. A time span around one week for obtaining the model 4. Able to predict the most aspects of the battery’s behavior like the voltage, SOC, temperature and, preferably, simulate the degradation effects, safety and thermal aspects 5. Accuracy with less than 15% error The start point of this thesis was the study of current methods for cell modeling. Based on their approach, they are divided into three categories, abstract, black box and white box methods. Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages, but none of them are able to fulfill the above requirements. This thesis presents a method, called “gray box”, which is, partially, a mix of the black and white boxes’ concepts. The gray box method uses values for model’s parameters from different sources. Firstly, some chemical/physical measurements like in the case of the white box method, secondly, some of the physical tests/experiments used in the case of the black box method and thirdly, information provided by cell datasheets, books, papers, journals and scientific databases. As practical part of this thesis, a prismatic cell, EIG C20 with 20Ah capacity was selected as the sample cell and its electrochemical model was produced with the proposed method. Some of the model’s parameters are measured and some others are estimated. Also, the abilities of AutoLion, a specialized software for lithium-ion battery modeling were used to accelerate the modeling process. Finally, the physical tests were used as part of the references for calculating the accuracy of the produced model. The results show that the gray box method can produce a model with nearly no cost, in less than one week and with error around 30% for the HPPC tests and, less than this, for the OCV and voltage tests. The proposed method could, largely, fulfill the five mentioned requirements. These results were achieved even without using any physical tests/experimental data for tuning the parameters, which is expected to reduce the error considerably. These are promising results for the idea of the gray box which is in its nascent stages and needs time to develop and be useful for commercial purposes.

Merveillaut, Mathieu 20 January 2011 (has links)
In electric cars, electrical need increases continuously. Since, the battery size is limited and its performances do not improve any more, it is essential to have a high-performance electrical energy management. It is thus necessary to control the battery resources, in terms of available energy and power, thanks to an ageing-integrated state estimator. This thesis work presents a detailed study of the modeling of the lithium-ion battery thanks to the porous electrodes theory and parameterization methods of these models. Following this study, structures of observation of the SOC of lithium-ion batteries has been made. Those structures allow us to estimate the Soc in a reliable way taking into account of currents and voltages errors involved.

Contribution à l’étude de l’influence des régimes bi-phasiques sur les performances des électrolyseurs de type PEM basse pression : approche numérique, analytique et expérimentale / Contribution to the study of the influence of bi-phasic regimes on the performance of electrolysers of low pressure PEM type : numerical, analytical and experimental approach

Aubras, Farid 27 April 2018 (has links)
Based on proton conduction of polymeric electrolyte membrane (PEM) technology, the water electrolysis (PEMWE) offers an interesting solution for efficiency hydrogen production. During the electrolysis process of water in PEMWE, the anodic side is the place where the water is splitting into oxygen, protons and electrons. The aim of this study is to recognize the link between two-phase flows (anode side) and cell performance under low pressure conditions. We have developed three approaches: the analytical approach and the numerical approach validated by the experimental data. For the numerical model, we have developed a two-dimensional stationary PEMWE model that takes into account electro-chemical reaction, mass transfer (bubbly flow), heat transfer and charges balance through the Membrane Electrodes Assembly (MEA). In order to take into account the changing electrical behavior, our model combines two scales of descriptions: at microscale within anodic active layer and MEA scale. The water management at both scales is strongly linked to the slug flow regime or the bubbly flow regime. Therefore, water content close to active surface areas depends on two-phase flow regimes. Our simulation results demonstrate that the transition from bubble to slug flow in the channel is associated with improvement in mass transport, a reduction of the ohmic resistance and an enhancement of the PEMWE efficiency. Regarding the analytical model, we have developed a one-dimensional stationary isothermal PEMWE model that takes into account electro-chemical reaction, mass transfer and charges balance through the Membrane Electrodes Assembly (MEA). The analytical approach permit to obtain mathematical solution of the activation overpotential, the ohmic losses and the bubbles overpotential respectively for the low current density, the middle current density and the high current density. This approach quantify the total overpotential of the cell, function of the operational and intrinsic numbers. In terms of perspective, the analytical model could be used for the diagnostic of the electrolyzer PEM.
