Hydrogen Fuel from Water - An Advanced Electrocatalyst based on Nitrogen doped Carbon Nanotubes

Ekspong, Joakim January 2015 (has links)
The production of cost-effective catalysts for the production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water is important for clean energy production. In this work we report on a study of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) directly synthesized onto carbon paper have been decorated with MoS2. The electrodes utilize the improved conductivity of the NCNTs and the carbon paper for electron transport, combined with the high catalytic activity of MoS2. The NCNTs were successfully decorated with co-axial nano-flakes of MoS2 by a single step solvothermal process using Dimethylformamide (DMF) and ammonium tetrathiomolybdate. MoS2 was also prepared with alternative methods for comparison. The effects of supporting MoS2 on NCNTs were studied by simulations with density functional theory (DFT). The most active adsorption sites for hydrogen on MoS2 were identified and were on the edges. The catalyst showed competitive activity with other earth-abun- dant catalysts with an onset potential of 170 mV and a small Tafel slope of 40 mV/dec. The improved catalytic activity of HER by having NCNTs as support was confirmed by DFT and experimental results.

Analytical Study, One Dimensional Computational Simulation, and Optimization of an Electrode Supported Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell

Milobar, Daniel Gregory January 2010 (has links)
A one dimensional mass transfer analysis was performed for convective transport as well as mass transport within a porous media. This analysis was based on the analogous average heat transfer within a duct. Equations were developed to calculate the concentration of gas species at the triple phase boundary sites present at the interface of a porous electrode and a nonporous electrolyte. The mass transport analyzed on the steam side electrode of a solid oxide electrolysis cell was performed for a ternary gas mixture. In this analysis two gas species were actively diffusing in the presence of a third inert carrier gas. Multicomponent diffusion coefficients were determined for each species in the steam side electrode mixture. The mass transport analysis performed on the air side electrode utilized a binary gas mixture, namely air. At less than one percent of the total mixture of air, the combined effects of Argon and Carbon Dioxide were assumed to be negligible. This assumption allowed us to consider air a binary mixture. A comprehensive model was developed to determine cell performance under various operating condition and multiple cell geometries. The output of this model was used to optimize various physical features of the cell. Tests were performed on electrode supported solid oxide electrolysis cells at the Idaho National Laboratory. These cells were subjected to various operating temperatures and inlet steam mole fractions. Voltage vs. current density experimental data were collected and compared to computational data in order to validate the model.

Vidaus degimo variklio efektyvumo didinimo naudojant atominį vandenilį kaip kuro priedą tyrimas / Research of Internal Combustion Engine Efficiency Increase using Hydrogen as Fuel Additive

Kaizevičius, Andrius 24 March 2014 (has links)
Darbo apimtis: 85 psl. be priedų, 27 iliustracijos, 3 lentelės, 22 bibliografiniai šaltiniai. Prie darbo pridedamas mokslinis straipsnis. / The final thesis provides possibility for internal combustion engine to work using hydrogen as fuel additive. Analysis of scientific literature has been performed during research work. Main reason was to gain knowledge of possitive and negative engine characteristics while using hydrogen extracted from water during electrolysis process. The final thesis is made from two parts: practical experiments and theoretical calculations. Fuel consumption, exhaust gass temperature and other parameters have been established during practical experiments. These parameters were used in theoretical calculations to establish possibility for engine to work using hydrogen. Energy losses were calculated and recomendation for internal combustion engine have been prepeared after evaluation of parameters. Volume of the final thesis: 85 pages without appendixes, 27 pictures, 3 tables, 22 bibliographical entries. Memoir is included to appendix.

Synthesis Of Thiophene Capped Polytetrahydrofuran Conducting Copolymers

Unur, Ece 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Living polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) was terminated with sodium thiophenemethonate to yield a polymer with thiophene groups at one (PTHF1) and both ends (PTHF2). Copolymerizations of PTHF1 and PTHF2 insulating polymers with pyrrole and thiophene were achieved in water-p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) and acetonitrile (AN)-tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB) solvent-electrolyte couples via constant potential electrolysis. Characterization of the samples were performed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermal Analyses (TGA), (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Electrical conductivities were measured by four-probe technique. PTHF1/PTh and PTHF2/PTh films which were deposited on ITO-glass in dichloromethane-TBAFB solvent-electrolyte couple found out to be anodically coloring copolymers that electrochemically switch between an oxidized blue and reduced red state exhibiting electrochromic behavior. Spectroelectrochemical Analysis (SEC) was run in UV-VIS region to reach a better understanding of the band structures of PTHF1/PTh and PTHF2/PTh electrochromic copolymers. Optoelectrochemical analyses were introduced as a new method for the characterization of copolymers.
