Automatizando a obtenção da complexidade baseada em linguagem regular de autômatos celulares elementares

It is known that, for elementary cellular automata, the set of all possible configurations that can appear at any finite number of time steps in their temporal evolution constitutes a regular language. As a consequence, such a set of strings can be represented by a minimal deterministic finite automaton, and the quantity of states and transitions among them may be considered a measure of the (regular language) complexity of the rule at issue; performing such a process may be computationally intensive, but it is well solved in the literature. However, when the target is the limit finite automaton, that is, the one after an infinite number of time steps, the machine may not exist for some rules, and the currently existing method fails to automatically generate it for some rules for which it is known otherwise that a solution does exist. This work aims at helping the solution of the latter problem, although the actual derivation of the algorithm to automatically generate the limit finite automaton has not yet been possible. However, it goes further the currently existing method, by means of a new algorithm for automatically yielding the growth expressions of the finite automaton representative of each time step, including some cases not reported so far, therefore shedding light over the issue, and opening perspectives for a subsequent automatic derivation of the limit finite automaton. / Autômatos celulares são sistemas dinâmicos e computacionais totalmente discretos no tempo, no espaço e em suas variáveis de estado. Sabe-se que, para um autômato celular elementar, o conjunto de todas as configurações possíveis de se obter decorrida uma quantidade finita de passos de tempo de sua evolução temporal constitui uma linguagem regular. Com isso, esse conjunto de cadeias pode ser representado por um autômato finito determinístico mínimo, e a quantidade de estados e transições entre eles pode ser considerada uma medida da complexidade (em linguagem regular) da regra elementar em questão; tal processo, apesar de eventualmente custoso computacionalmente, está bem resolvido na literatura. No entanto, quando se deseja obter a representação do autômato finito limite, isto é, para uma quantidade infinita de passos de tempo, essa máquina pode não existir para algumas regras, e, mesmo em alguns casos em que se sabe que ela existe, não há ainda um método que a gere automaticamente. O presente trabalho caminha na direção de ajudar a solucionar este último problema, apesar de que ainda não foi possível derivar o algoritmo de comportamento limite. No entanto, avança-se aqui com relação ao método atualmente existente, no sentido de, através de um novo algoritmo, derivar automaticamente expressões de crescimento do autômato finito representativo de cada passo de tempo, inclusive em casos ainda não reportados, o que lança luz sobre a questão original, abrindo perspectivas para que a obtenção automática do autômato finito limite possa ser obtida posteriormente.

Some Investigations on QoS in the Wireline-Wireless Network Interface Zone

In the next generation of networks we will begin to see the true convergence of voice, multimedia, and data traffic. This merging of various dedicated networks will occur both in the wired and wireless domains. Given the growth in the areas of wireless voice and data, we see that the combination of mobile and Internet communication constitutes the driving force behind the third-generation wireless system and makes the basis for the fourth-generation wireless system. For services like voice over IP over wireless (VoIPoW), the main challenge is to achieve QoS and spectrum efficiency. In order to support better QoS the IETF Mobile IP Working Group is discussing a number of enhancements to the base protocol to reduce the latency, packet loss and signaling overhead experienced during handoff. This support also includes both the call admission and the subsequent scheduling of packet transmissions. In this thesis, we will first survey the work done on issues related to QoS provisioning for wireless network and then will address bandwidth allocation problem in packet radio network with special emphasis on wireline to wireless internetworking zone. The main aim of the thesis is to evolve a strategy to reduce the call dropping probability by negotiating the QoS in those conditions when we do not have the sufficient resources (mainly bandwidth) to allocate. In order to achieve the QoS we have investigated the behaviour of the Real-time Voice traffic on a wireless link and its relation to the associated quality of service. This investigation opens a way for QoS negotiation, in a condition like during handoff, when the network is not able to sustain the negotiated bandwidth. The main results of this work are, that even with reduced bandwidth, quality for speech can be maintained at a reasonable level and this way the call dropping can be reduced. Such a scheme is useful in those conditions when we do not have the sufficient bandwidth to allocate like during a handoff of a mobile host from one cell to another. Moreover the bandwidth is a scarce resource in wireless domain so there should be an efficient call admission control policy. Many call admission control policies are proposed in the literature; here we propose a simple scheme for real-time traffic, specially speech, in a base station which increases the system throughput. In addition to above, we have also experimented with Cellular IP, one of the implementations of proposed micro-mobility architecture to provide faster handoff and seamless mobility in wired and wireless network.

Securing Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chip

MHRD PhD scholarship / With Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chips (MPSoCs) pervading our lives, security issues are emerging as a serious problem and attacks against these systems are becoming more critical and sophisticated. We have designed and implemented different hardware based solutions to ensure security of an MPSoC. Security assisting modules can be implemented at different abstraction levels of an MPSoC design. We propose solutions both at circuit level and system level of abstractions. At the VLSI circuit level abstraction, we consider the problem of presence of noise voltage in input signal coming from outside world. This noise voltage disturbs the normal circuit operation inside a chip causing false logic reception. If the disturbance is caused intentionally the security of a chip may be compromised causing glitch/transient attack. We propose an input receiver with hysteresis characteristic that can work at voltage levels between 0.9V and 5V. The circuit can protect the MPSoC from glitch/transient attack. At the system level, we propose solutions targeting Network-on-Chip (NoC) as the on-chip communication medium. We survey the possible attack scenarios on present-day MPSoCs and investigate a new attack scenario, i.e., router attack targeted toward NoC enabled MPSoC. We propose different monitoring-based countermeasures against routing table-based router attack in an MPSoC having multiple Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). Software attacks, the most common type of attacks, mainly exploit vulnerabilities like buffer overflow. This is possible if proper access control to memory is absent in the system. We propose four hardware based mechanisms to implement Role Based Access Control (RBAC) model in NoC based MPSoC.

Studies on Amorphous Silicon Thin Films Doped with Aluminium

Amorphous Silicon(a-Si) films have attracted the attention of several investigators as it is an economical material for devices. One of the problems that is addressed is the doping of these films after they are prepared. In this thesis, we investigated the effects of doping amorphous Sil­icon films(prepared by r.f. sputtering) with Aluminium(Al) by ther­mal diffusion. Amorphous Silicon films have been prepared on glass substrates at optimal process parameters. Then, the a-Si films are coated with Al by vacuum evaporation and subjected to heating in N2 atmosphere in the temperature range 300°C to 600°C for different durations. After etching Al layer, it has been found that some of the films which are heated around 550°C contain filament like polycrystalline regions surrounding islands of a-Si. This structure has been confirmed through Scanning Electron Mi-croscope(SEM) photographs and electrical conductivity measurements. SEM photographs indicate that, bright regions of amorphous mate­rial are surrounded by dark regions of relatively higher conducting boundaries. The electrical conductivity study shows that there is sharp increase in conductivity of Al doped films, which is attributed to the conduct­ing polycrystalUne filament. A simple model has been proposed to explain the variation of con­ductivity of these transformed films, with process parameters and with temperature. Schottky barrier diodes have been fabricated using these trans­formed materials and their characteristics explained.

Threshold Voltage Shift Compensating Circuits in Non-Crystalline Semiconductors for Large Area Sensor Actuator Interface

Thin Film Transistors (TFTs) are widely used in large area electronics because they offer the advantage of low cost fabrication and wide substrate choice. TFTs have been conventionally used for switching applications in large area display arrays. But when it comes to designing a sensor actuator system on a flexible substrate comprising entirely of organic and inorganic TFTs, there are two main challenges – i) Fabrication of complementary TFT devices is difficult ii) TFTs have a drift in their threshold voltage (VT) on application of gate bias. Also currently there are no circuit simulators in the market which account for the effect of VT drift with time in TFT circuits. The first part of this thesis focuses on integrating the VT shift model in the commercially available AIM-Spice circuit simulator. This provides a new and powerful tool that would predict the effect of VT shift on nodal voltages and currents in circuits and also on parameters like small signal gain, bandwidth, hysteresis etc. Since the existing amorphous silicon TFT models (level 11 and level 15) of AIM-Spice are copyright protected, the open source BSIM4V4 model for the purpose of demonstration is used. The simulator is discussed in detail and an algorithm for integration is provided which is then supported by the data from the simulation plots and experimental results for popular TFT configurations. The second part of the thesis illustrates the idea of using negative feedback achieved via contact resistance modulation to minimize the effect of VT shift in the drain current of the TFT. Analytical expressions are derived for the exact value of resistance needed to compensate for the VT shift entirely. Circuit to realize this resistance using TFTs is also provided. All these are experimentally verified using fabricated organic P-type Copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) and inorganic N-type Tin doped Zinc Oxide (ZTO) TFTs. The third part of the thesis focuses on building a robust amplifier using these TFTs which has time invariant DC voltage level and small signal gain at the output. A differential amplifier using ZTO TFTs has been built and is shown to fit all these criteria. Ideas on vertical routing in an actual sensor actuator interface using this amplifier have also been discussed such that the whole system may be “tearable” in any contour. Such a sensor actuator interface can have varied applications including wrap around thermometers and X-ray machines.

Analysis of Multi-Conductor Coupled Microstrip Lines with an Aperture in the Ground Plane for Compact Broadband Microwave Components

In recent years, the wireless industry has witnessed tremendous development for the defense and commercial segments. The explosive growth in the modern radio frequency and microwave systems leads to an increased interest in the research of miniaturized microwave circuits with superior performance. Broadband components, in particular band pass filters (BPFs) and couplers are some of the widely used components in the modern communication systems, software defined radios, cognitive radios, imaging systems and positioning radars. In order to meet these requirements, the use of innovative geometries, a thorough understanding of their behavior by appropriate analytical techniques and the use of appropriate fabrication approaches are essential. This thesis is an effort in this direction. In this thesis work, an aperture in the ground plane is used to achieve the tight coupling in the edge and broadside-coupled coupled lines which may be otherwise difficult due to the fabrication limitations. Since microstrip lines with an aperture in the ground plane are found to be very useful in various MIC and MMIC components, closed form analytical expressions developed here will be useful for their initial synthesis. The performances of components using these are enhanced using open/short circuited resonators, spurlines and stubs. A quasi-static approach has been investigated to obtain simple closed form expressions for a microstrip line with a rectangular aperture in the ground plane. The effect of a rectangular aperture in the ground plane has been incorporated in the commonly used expressions of a regular microstrip line by introducing the concept of an equivalent effective height. The expressions for the effective height microstrip geometries with defected ground are obtained and this has been further extended to various possibilities of two-conductor and three-conductor coupled lines. Analysis of the filters and the couplers are mainly based on the even and odd mode propagation characteristics of coupled lines. This approach is extended in this thesis for three conductor coupled lines. Novel broadband BPFs and couplers and dual band pass filters employing various coupled line configurations and defected ground have been developed in this research work. Most of these components have been implemented on a regular microwave laminate or LTCC medium (planar or multi-layer) and tested for the required RF performances. The experimental results were compared against the analytically computed results based on the circuit models and the full wave simulations using electromagnetic (EM) simulations for the validation. The results are in good agreement. With practical requirements of the organization in mind, additional design elements such as open circuit stubs have been incorporated in some of these designs to achieve the desired performance. It is expected that the wideband filter (3.0GHz to 3.8GHz) and the broadband coupler (4GHz to 6GHz) developed in this thesis work would be deployed in systems developed at the Central Research Laboratory, Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore, India. In summary, the present doctoral work strives to (i) establish a simplified analysis method for the microstrip lines and coupled microstrip lines with a rectangular aperture in the ground plane, (ii) extend the even and odd mode analysis of the coupled lines for several new coupled line configurations, (iii) design novel broadband microwave filters, dual band filter and couplers using both these, (iv) fabricate these devices using the planar technologies including LTCC, and (v) validate the analysis and design with important practical applications.
