Design Methods for Cryptanalysis

Judge, Lyndon Virginia 24 January 2013 (has links)
Security of cryptographic algorithms relies on the computational difficulty of deriving the secret key using public information. Cryptanalysis, including logical and implementation attacks, plays an important role in allowing the security community to estimate their cost, based on the computational resources of an attacker. Practical implementations of cryptanalytic systems require complex designs that integrate multiple functional components with many parameters. In this thesis, methodologies are proposed to improve the design process of cryptanalytic systems and reduce the cost of design space exploration required for optimization. First, Bluespec, a rule-based HDL, is used to increase the abstraction level of hardware design and support efficient design space exploration. Bluespec is applied to implement a hardware-accelerated logical attack on ECC with optimized modular arithmetic components. The language features of Bluespec support exploration and this is demonstrated by applying Bluespec to investigate the speed area tradeoff resulting from various design parameters and demonstrating performance that is competitive with prior work. This work also proposes a testing environment for use in verifying the implementation attack resistance of secure systems. A modular design approach is used to provide separation between the device being tested and the test script, as well as portability, and openness. This yields an open-source solution that supports implementation attack testing independent of the system platform, implementation details, and type of attack under evaluation. The suitability of the proposed test environment for implementation attack vulnerability analysis is demonstrated by applying the environment to perform an implementation attack on AES. The design of complex cryptanalytic hardware can greatly benefit from better design methodologies and the results presented in this thesis advocate the importance of this aspect. / Master of Science

Araujo, Rafael Will Macedo de 31 October 2013 (has links)
Protocols for authentication and key establishment are fundamental parts in security implementations for electronic devices communication. A Polymorphic Finite Field Multiplier

Das, Saptarsi 06 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Cryptography algorithms like the Advanced Encryption Standard, Elliptic Curve Cryptography algorithms etc are designed using algebraic properties of finite fields. Thus performance of these algorithms depend on performance of the underneath field operations. Moreover, different algorithms use finite fields of widely varying order. In order to cater to these finite fields of different orders in an area efficient manner, it is necessary to design solutions in the form of hardware-consolidations, keeping the performance requirements in mind. Due to their small area occupancy and high utilization, such circuits are less likely to stay idle and therefore are less prone to loss of energy due to leakage power dissipation. There is another class of applications that rely on finite field algebra namely the various error detection and correction techniques. Most of the classical block codes used for detection of bit-error in communications over noisy communication channels apply the algebraic properties of finite fields. Cyclic redundancy check is one such algorithm used for detection of error in data in computer network. Reed-Solomon code is most notable among classical block codes because of its widespread use in storage devices like CD, DVD, HDD etc. In this work we present the architecture of a polymorphic multiplier for operations over various extensions of GF(2). We evolved the architecture of a textbook shift-and-add multiplier to arrive at the architecture of the polymorphic multiplier through a generalized mathematical formulation. The polymorphic multiplier is capable of morphing itself in runtime to create data-paths for multiplications of various orders. In order to optimally exploit the resources, we also introduced the capability of sub-word parallel execution in the polymorphic multiplier. The synthesis results of an instance of such a polymorphic multipliershowsabout41% savings in area with 21% degradation in maximum operating frequency compared to a collection of dedicated multipliers with equivalent functionality. We introduced the multiplier as an accelerator unit for field operations in the coarse grained runtime reconfigurable platform called REDEFINE. We observed about 40-50% improvement in performance of the AES algorithm and about 52×improvement in performance of Karatsuba-Ofman multiplication algorithm.

SecuRES: Secure Resource Sharing System : AN INVESTIGATION INTO USE OF PUBLIC LEDGER TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE DECENTRALIZED DIGITAL RESOURCE-SHARING SYSTEMS

Leung, Philip, Svensson, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
The project aims at solving the problem of non-repudiation, integrity and confidentiality of data when digitally exchanging sensitive resources between parties that need to be able to trust each other without the need for a trusted third party. This is done in the framework of answering to what extent digital resources can be shared securely in a decentralized public ledger-based system compared to trust-based alternatives. A background of existing resource sharing solutions is explored which shows an abundance third party trust-based systems, but also an interest in public ledger solutions in the form of the Storj network which uses such technology, but focuses on storage rather than sharing. The proposed solution, called SecuRES, is a communication protocol based on public ledger technology which acts similar to Bitcoin. A prototype based on the protocol has been implemented which proves the ability to share encrypted files with one or several recipients through a decentralized public ledger-based network. It was concluded that the SecuRES solution could do away with the requirement of trust in third parties for all but some optional operations using external authentication services. This is done while still maintaining data integrity of a similar or greater degree to trust-based solutions and offers the additional benefits of non-repudiation, high confidentiality and high transparency from the ability to make source code and protocol documentation openly available without endangering the system. Further research is needed to investigate whether the system can scale up for widespread adoption while maintaining security and reasonable performance requirements.

Goya, Denise Hideko 16 December 2011 (has links)
Certificateless public key cryptography is an alternative model to traditional asymmetric key cryptography, because the public key authentication occurs implicitly during a protocol run, with no need of digital certificates management and distribution. It has the potential to reduce computing costs, and it allows a higher security level than the one in the identity-based model. In this PhD thesis, formal security models for certificateless authenticated key agreement are improved with two independent objectives: (1) to increase the trust level for the partial secret key generating authority on which users rely, and (2) to enable computationally efficient protocols, with significant security properties, such as resistance against attacks from adversaries with full control of the communication channel, and from adversaries who are able to replace users\' public keys by any chosen value. In order to demonstrate that these improvements made are feasible and achieve the objectives, new protocols are proposed in the two-party case. These protocols are proved secure by using reduction techniques for provable security.

Integration of UAVS with Real Time Operating Systems and Establishing a Secure Data Transmission

NIRANJAN RAVI (7013471) 16 October 2019 (has links)
In today’s world, the applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems are leaping by extending their scope from military applications on to commercial and medical sectors as well. Owing to this commercialization, the need to append external hardware with UAV systems becomes inevitable. This external hardware could aid in enabling wireless data transfer between the UAV system and remote Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) using low powered architecture like Thread, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). The data is being transmitted from the flight controller to the ground control station using a MAVlink (Micro Air Vehicle Link) protocol. But this radio transmission method is not secure, which may lead to data leakage problems. The ideal aim of this research is to address the issues of integrating different hardware with the flight controller of the UAV system using a light-weight protocol called UAVCAN (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Controller Area Network). This would result in reduced wiring and would harness the problem of integrating multiple systems to UAV. At the same time, data security is addressed by deploying an encryption chip into the UAV system to encrypt the data transfer using ECC (Elliptic curve cryptography) and transmitting it to cloud platforms instead of radio transmission.

Elliptic curve cryptography algorithms resistant against power analysis attacks on resource constrained devices / Algorithmes cryptographiques à base de courbes elliptiques résistant aux attaques par analyse de consommation

Houssain, Hilal 21 December 2012 (has links)
Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems (ECC) have been adopted as a standardized Public Key Cryptosystems (PKC) by IEEE, ANSI, NIST, SEC and WTLS. In comparison to traditional PKC like RSA and ElGamal, ECC offer equivalent security with smaller key sizes, in less computation time, with lower power consumption, as well as memory and bandwidth savings. Therefore, ECC have become a vital technology, more popular and considered to be particularly suitable for implementation on resource constrained devices such as the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Major problem with the sensor nodes in WSN as soon as it comes to cryptographic operations is their extreme constrained resources in terms of power, space, and time delay, which limit the sensor capability to handle the additional computations required by cryptographic operations. Moreover, the current ECC implementations in WSN are particularly vulnerable to Side Channel Analysis (SCA) attacks; in particularly to the Power Analysis Attacks (PAA), due to the lack of secure physical shielding, their deployment in remote regions and it is left unattended. Thus designers of ECC cryptoprocessors on WSN strive to introduce algorithms and architectures that are not only PAA resistant, but also efficient with no any extra cost in terms of power, time delay, and area. The contributions of this thesis to the domain of PAA aware elliptic curve cryptoprocessor for resource constrained devices are numerous. Firstly, we propose two robust and high efficient PAA aware elliptic curve cryptoprocessors architectures based on innovative algorithms for ECC core operation and envisioned at securing the elliptic curve cryptoprocessors against Simple Power Analysis (SPA) attacks on resource constrained devices such as the WSN. Secondly, we propose two additional architectures that are envisioned at securing the elliptic curve cryptoprocessors against Differential Power Analysis (DPA) attacks. Thirdly, a total of eight architectures which includes, in addition to the two SPA aware with the other two DPA awareproposed architectures, two more architectures derived from our DPA aware proposed once, along with two other similar PAA aware architectures. The eight proposed architectures are synthesized using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. Fourthly, the eight proposed architectures are analyzed and evaluated by comparing their performance results. In addition, a more advanced comparison, which is done on the cost complexity level (Area, Delay, and Power), provides a framework for the architecture designers to select the appropriate design. Our results show a significant advantage of our proposed architectures for cost complexity in comparison to the other latest proposed in the research field.
