On the battlefield: a study of emotional reactions of parents of preterm infants and its relationship to parenthood

Alves, Manuela Vilanova Barbosa 29 April 2015 (has links)
The birth of a premature infant is a public health problem, whose consequences affect the living conditions of the newborn and parents emotional reactions. The early separation between mother and baby, the limitations established by technological environment of a neonatal intensive care unit for parents-child relation and parental couples psychological distress may affect the relationship of triad father-mother-infant. The goal of this study was investigate the emotional reactions set presented by very low birthweight infants parents and relationship between these reactions and transition to parenthood. This study used qualitative research and the subjects were 4 mothers and 4 fathers of very low birthweight infants admitted at University Hospital of USP. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and were analyzed through content analysis. The theoretical coordinates that supported analysis were the Winnicotts theories add contributions from other authors, whose theoretical elaborations were considered relevant for discussion. Were identified emotional reactions linked to early interruption of pregnancy, to relationships with child, with health team and parental couples relationship. Fear, apprehension, estrangement, feelings of incompleteness, unreality and helplessness, need support, personal transformation and marital bonds composed the singular emotional reactions of each parental couple. Some of these reactions proved to be favoring and other cause difficulties of transition to parenthood. In This study, the difficulties experienced by parents were not a obstacle to building a secure and healthy bond with their children. But, these difficulties highlight the need for parents to receive specialized care of mental health professionals, as well as, comprehensive care of the health team during hospitalization, pregnancy and after discharge

Efeito da associação de sabor e música sobre o julgamento gustativo e o estado de ânimo de crianças / Effect from association of taste and music through the gustatory judgment and the mood of children

Bueno, Viviane Freire 19 May 2006 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to assess the children’s judgement on the gustatory pleasantness and mood generated by associating the taste and music in congruent and contrast stimulus context. Congruent stimuli had the same affective valence while the contrast stimuli had a divergent affective valence. Eighty three children, males and females, age five to ten were assessed. The participants represented a sample of middle-low social class. The participant were asked to taste the suprathreshold solutions of sucrose and the caffeine in the absence of music, to identify it as sweet or bitter and to make a judgement of the gustatory sensation in terms of pleasing or displeasing by choosing a schematic face representative of the initial mood state. In the second stage of the task, the participants listened to popular music pre-qualified as happy and sad. Initially they were asked to judge the mood transmitted by the music and then while listening to the music went again through the gustative judgement task. The results show that children in this study sample recognized and distinguished the sweet from bitter tastes and were able to judge the gustative pleasantness sensation and the consequent mood. This study also shows that children’s judgement on sweet and bitter taste as well as mood can be changed by the music execution. This change occurred in the presence of a bitter taste and happy music altering the mood judgment from sad to happy. In presence of the sweet taste and sad music the mood was altered from happy to sad. The study showed that the use of sensory tests with children can generate good results and they might be considered a contribution collaborator of details in the experimental arrangements. It is also proposed that the variation in the judgement on the gustative pleasantness sensation and mood is contingent on, among others factors, the development of the gustative and auditory sensitivity along the age groups, the way attention, memory and affective skills are used, the different sensory stimulus context and the improvement of sensory integration at the age of 7, specifically in the case of congruent stimulus.

Generating Facial Animation With Emotions In A Neural Text-To-Speech Pipeline

Igeland, Viktor January 2019 (has links)
This thesis presents the work of incorporating facial animation with emotions into a neural text-to-speech pipeline. The project aims to allow for a digital human to utter sentences given only text, removing the need for video input. Our solution consists of a neural network able to generate blend shape weights from speech which is placed in a neural text-to-speech pipeline. We build on ideas from previous work and implement a recurrent neural network using four LSTM layers and later extend this implementation by incorporating emotions. The emotions are learned by the network itself via the emotion layer and used at inference to produce the desired emotion. While using LSTMs for speech-driven facial animation is not a new idea, it has not yet been combined with the idea of using emotional states that are learned by the network itself. Previous approaches are either only two-dimensional, of complicated design or require manual laboring of the emotional states. Thus, we implement a network of simple design, taking advantage of the sequence processing ability of LSTMs and combines it with the idea of emotional states. We trained several variations of the network on data captured using a head mounted camera, and the results of the best performing model were used in a subjective evaluation. During the evaluation the participants were presented several videos and asked to rate the naturalness of the face uttering the sentence. The results showed that the naturalness of the face greatly depends on which emotion vector was used, as some vectors limited the mobility of the face. However, our best achieving emotion vector was rated at the same level of naturalness as the ground truth, proving our method successful. The purpose of the thesis was fulfilled as our implementation demonstrates one possibility of incorporating facial animation into a text-to-speech pipeline.

EVOLUTIONARY THEORIES OF EMOTIONAL STATES AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Röckner, Naima January 2011 (has links)
This review is an exploration of evolutionary theories with the aim to investigate emotional states, well-being and ill-being from an evolutionary perspective. Functional evolutionary theories of emotional states, posit that emotions have evolved as behavior modifiers responding to specific situations that provided fitness benefits in our ancestral past. Exploring this theory gradually uncover clues towards practical, hands-on suggestions as to how to increase life satisfaction and quality of life. Specifically, these suggestions include interacting with kin, reaping stress-reducing and health effects from letting nature be a part of your life, developing deep friendships, and not comparing yourself with the best or most successful individuals in the world.

Exploring the abstract language of contemporary dance in order to create emotional states/nuances

Buday, Csaba Steven January 2006 (has links)
This study investigates how a choreographer, through the abstract language of contemporary dance, generates emotional states/nuances which can be recognised but at the same time allow for ambiguity in the reading of the work. This investigation was addressed through a series of performance projects, culminating in the final dance work Inhabited Space. The setting for the work, triggered by Bachelard's The Poetics of Space, became the imagined spaces of a domestic urban environment, specifically the lounge and bedroom. In order to create a work reflecting emotional states and nuances, a range of choreographic processes were explored to inform the construction of movement vocabulary, framed by performer/space/object relationships. This studio-based study with performative outcomes was supported by a hybrid methodological approach of predominantly practice-led research, incorporating aspects of action research and phenomenology. Findings and understandings emerged from reflective practice in the exegesis but were primarily embedded within the creative work itself.

The contemporary context has increasingly demanded that the various spheres of human life to acclimate to the new technologies of information and communication. Due to concern with respect to physical inactivity, obesity and the risks that these processes cause to human health associated with the large number of virtual game users, the benefits of games known as exergames (EXGs) have been discussed more often. The study included 18 volunteers of both genders, with a mean age of 22 (± 1). The instruments used for data collection were the IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) - Short Version, in order to measure the physical activity level of each of the participants. Was used POMS (Profile of Mood States) applied before and after each 40 minute session with intervention EXGs. Other instruments used were the Effort Subjective Perception Scale based on the scale 0- 10 proposed by Borg et al. (1982) and the Inventory of Motivation, Virtual Games and Practice of Physical Activities / Sports, composed of 108 questions divided into two sections, Videogame and Physical / Sports Activities. At the end of 4 weeks, an interview was conducted, based on the map interview in order to collect data on the motivational aspects, physical activity and virtual games. For the practice of EXGs we used a Samsung LED TV 40 "(5300 series 5 model), a Microsoft Xbox360® with Kinect® and games related to sports and physical activities. From the data found and the reports of the participants, supported by recent literature, it was noted that the TDICs and virtual reality immersive environments are strongly present in the daily lives of the young participants of this study. With the results of this study can be seen that the EXGs work as a motivational factor for physical activity. The reports of the participants, as well as the data collected pertaining to their emotional states during the intervention sessions (POMS and Inventory Motivation, Virtual Games and Practice of Physical Activities / Sports), could contribute to the confirmation of the initial hypothesis that the EXGs contribute to its practitioners be motivated to carry out activities outside the virtual environment.

Physical Education as well as all the corporal practices in the school looks, for the most part, to the traditional chains of the esportivization and the sports skills development. However, it is clear that the discussions around these practices can be rich in the sense of human development and their relationships. We know that collectivity, competition and cooperation are elements that stimulate diverse emotional states, allowing us to work effectively on emotional learning. This work culminates in what we think about Physical Education, multidisciplinary, that has the duty to offer good moments for our students to experience and experience emotional states and their conflicts, allowing the development of these social skills in a really efficient way. The present work tried to understand how students react socially and emotionally in the different moments of their school routine and how emotional states are activated in Physical Education classes during the practice of games, gymnastics, dance and digital games. And also, understand how they can identify emotional reactions in their peers. The methodological option was action research and was carried out in close relation between theory and practice, where participants and researchers, representatives of the situation or the problem, are involved in al situations. The research was carried out with 120 students of 13 and 14 years of age, from the 8th year of middle school in 2017, in Campinas and the instruments of participant observations were used, as well as the application of a questionnaire elaborated by the author, at the beginning and at the end of the research period. Another research tool used was the Geneva Emotion Wheel (GEW), which made it possible to identify the emotional states during the different modalities practiced during the research period. All the data collected were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed to try to prove and explain significant differences in the social and emotional responses of the students to the different stimuli during the research, considering gender issues and the period in which they study. These analyzes suggest that the activities practiced during the research triggered varied emotional states, and that physical as well as digital practices can contribute to the development of emotional learning.
