De/Limiting Emptiness and the Boundaries of the Ineffable

Duckworth, Douglas S. 01 January 2010 (has links)
Emptiness (śūnyatā) is one of the most important topics in Buddhist thought and also is one of the most perplexing. Buddhists in Tibet have developed a sophisticated tradition of philosophical discourse on emptiness and ineffability. This paper discusses the meaning(s) of emptiness within three prominent traditions in Tibet: the Geluk (dge lugs), Jonang (jo nang), and Nyingma (rnying ma). I give a concise presentation of each tradition's interpretation of emptiness and show how each interpretation represents a distinctive aspect of its meaning. Given that Buddhist traditions (1) accept an extra-linguistic reality and (2) maintain a strong tradition of suspicion of language with the belief that language both constructs and distorts reality, this paper responds to an issue that is not so much whether or not an inexpressible reality can be expressed, but rather how it is best articulated.

L’écriture du vide et de la renaissance dans l’oeuvre de Simone Veil, d’Agata Tuszyńska et de Władysław Szpilman / The Holocaust : emptiness and rebirth in the work of Agata Tuszynska, of Wladyslaw Szpilman and Simone Veil

Iwanska, Eleonora 19 December 2013 (has links)
A period of triumphant Nazism (in the beginning of XXth century) imposed in all Europe an abrupt stop: it made everything to annihilate the Jewish Diaspora. Outside even of physical destruction, this resolution of the “Jewish issue” is present as demolition at the same time of the heritage and of the Jewish identity. A lack of apogee is cause by a long way of tolerance and a hard work of integration. What changes from then on, is all the social relationships. The feeling of insecurity becomes an obsession and continues to haunt the survivors long after the end of the War. We can see that in the example of “Rodzinna historia leku” (A family history of the fear) it is the impact which has the Holocaust on the future of Polish Jews. Agata Tuszynska, professor, journalist (the second generation of the survivors) had a period of denial and a period of revolt, then came the age of the acceptance, with a desire to restore socio-cultural links between the disappeared and the contemporary world. The refusal of judgment on a kind of anti-Semitic fever, according to the criterion of the good and the bad, makes null the seizure of the correct meaning of the extermination after the War. The silence of the survivors overshadows the centuries of existence of the Polish Jews. It locks the victims into a world of incommunicable suffering. It is thus obvious that, in these circumstances to mourn and come to terms with the genocide can’t be succeeded. What prevents them from making this work of memory, except the psychic defenses, the social incomprehension and the self-forgetfulness. Shoah becomes then a mix of confessions and concepts, where get the space and the nonsense.

Fenomén prázdné galerie / The phenomenon of empty gallery

Brožka, Petr January 2015 (has links)
The doctoral thesis deals with the topic of exihibiting empty gallery space. The purpose is to clarify the specifics that accompany the exhibited empty gallery and to define the essence of more general patterns of exposition in the gallery space. Doctoral thesis also presents the special simple void that generates art itself. Finally, the text reopens a polemic within the institutional theory of art. Doctoral thesis criticizes the established terminology related with exposition of the empty gallery.

Automates d'arbres à contraintes globales pour la vérification de propriétés de sécurité / Tree automata with global constraints for the verification of security properties

Vacher, Camille 07 December 2010 (has links)
We study here several classes of finite state automata running on trees, extended with constraints that allow to test for equalities or disequalities between subterms. We focus on tree automata with global constraints where the tests are done depending on the states reached by the automaton on its runs. Such automata were introduced in studies on semi-structured documents. We do here a detailed comparison between those automata and other models that allow to operate similar tests, like tree automata with constraints between brothers, or tree automata with an auxiliary memory. We show how such automata may be used to verify security properties on cryptographic protocols. Tree automata have already been used to modelize the messages exchanged during a protocol session. By adding equality constraints, we can describe precisely protocol sessions that use a same message several times, hence avoiding an approximation. Then, we answer positively the decision problem of the emptiness of the languages recognized by tree automata with global constraints. By showing that their expressivity is very close from the one of the automata operating on directed acyclic graphs representations of terms, we infer an emptiness decision procedure in double exponential non-deterministic time. Finally, we study the emptiness decision problem for automata with global constraints where we authorize "key constraints", that intuitively allow that all subtrees of a given type in an input tree are distincts. We give an emptiness decision procedure of non-primitive recursive complexity. Key constraints are classicaly used to represent a unique identifier. We describe a non-primitive recusrive emptiness decision procedure. We show that this procedure is very robust and that it allows to extend the automata with additionnal constraints, like counting constraints or local tests, while preserving decidability.

Český jazyk v Protektorátu na příkladu vybraných periodik / Czech in Selected Periodicals in the Protectorate

Hudečková, Hana January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis describes instruments of totalitarian language, it summarizes existing research about language during the protectorate of the official journals. Inforamtion was processed on the created corpus. This corpus war created on base two ofiicial journals Arijský boj and Národní politika. Information was acquired by some available instruments of Openoffice.org 3.3 and software K-words, which one is available online from <www.korpus.cz>. This diploma thesis includes ortography, word- forming sphere, lexical-semantic sphere and morfological sphere. Ortography includes capital letter and puncutation, word-forming sphere includes abbreviations. Lexical- semantic sphere includes representation of Jews, Keywords and Germanism in czech texts. Morfological sphere includes inflection of Germanism, specifically of toponyms. We discovered inconsistency of treatment with capital letter of some words, any words had been evolved during protecorate and any words was written with capital letter from the beginning of the protectorate. We noted to frequent appearance of ironic quotes. We discovered increased frequency of abbrevation in created corpus. Further we discovered rettence Národní politika as to representation of Jews in contrast with Arijský boj, but in both of them was anti-Semitic rhetoric...

Le vide spatial : une approche phénoménologique du vide, de l’espace et de la chorégraphie / The spatial emptiness : a phenomenological approach of emptiness, space and choreography

Ballanfat, Elsa 03 December 2016 (has links)
Does empty space exist or not? Could we answer the question of the nature of space? This thesis deals with these problems treating them from an original point of view, which is contemporary dance. Indeed choreography has not been so much studied as an art of space. However dancers and choreographers experienced the notion of space, this allowed us to bring a critical approach to philosophy. While the concept of emptiness was admitted in the Occident at the cost of its sole validity in Physics, Cunningham’s choreographic work in particular lead the public to a paradoxical perception: emptiness is nothing but the choreographer makes it visible. From then on, the paradoxical nature of this perception disrupted the conceptual distinctions: how could Husserl’s phenomenology admit that emptiness can be experienced ? If there is perception, it is because there is the intuition of something, but in this case it is not nothing. Focusing on the late Heidegger, Maldiney and the Far Eastern philosophies, it became clear that emptiness could yet be described as the very opening of space. Our relationship to our body proves then to be decisive: as long as we consider the body as something we own, we perceive space as a space in which we find a range of possibilities. On the contrary, to perceive emptiness implies a kind of detachment. We are part of a spatial and temporal all whose perception depends on our full awareness of ourselves. We are body and mind, as well as the world offers us to see its essential emptiness and fullness.

Bouddhisme et christianisme chez Masao Abe dans la perspective du pur amour / Buddhism and Christianism in Masao Abe from the angle of Pure Love

Galland, Alex 11 December 2013 (has links)
The Japanese academic and Buddhist Masao Abe drew the public attention in the 1980s by comparative studies of Buddhism and Christianism, in particular through the notions of "kenosis" of Christ in Christianism and "vacuity" in Buddhism. Since we try to estimate the validity of the link made by Abe between "kenosis" and "vacuity", it is necessary to question beforehand his understanding of the concept of "vacuity". We demonstrate that his understanding of this concept is in constant relation with the thought of the Indian Buddhist philosopher Nâgârjuna. It leads us to consider negatively the validity of the link made by Abe between "kenosis" and "vacuity". In a second part, we try to take up the challenge Abe confronts himself in order to find a meeting place between Christianism and Buddhism by discussing the way he conceives the question of the self from the angle of "pure love"
