Development and Validation of a Twelve Bolt Extended Stiffened End-Plate Moment Connection

Szabo, Trevor Alexander 20 June 2017 (has links)
Three end-plate moment connection configurations are prequalified for special moment frames for seismic applications in AISC 358-10. The eight bolt extended stiffened connection is the strongest of the three configurations, but it can only develop approximately 30 percent of currently available hot-rolled beam sections. The strength of this configuration is limited by bolt strength. There is a need for a stronger end-plate moment connection, hence the reason for the development and validation of a twelve bolt configuration. Equations were developed for the design procedure using various analytical methods, which included yield line analysis and an effective tee stub model. An experimental program was conducted, which consisted of the full-scale cyclic testing of four end-plate moment connections. The intention of the testing was to develop and validate the design procedure, and prequalify a new twelve bolt configuration. A displacement-controlled loading protocol was applied according to AISC 341-10. The experimental results showed that the model for thick end-plate behavior is conservative by 6.7%, the model for end-plate yielding is conservative by 8.8%, and the model for bolt tension rupture with prying conservatively predicts by 18.5%. The specimens that were designed to form a plastic hinge in the beam fractured in a brittle manner. The deep beam specimen fractured in the first 2% story drift cycle, and the shallow beam specimen fractured in the second 3% story drift cycle. The fracture of the prequalification specimens was determined to have been caused by stiffeners of high yield stress relative to the beam yield stress. / Master of Science

Strength and Stiffness of Weak-Axis Moment End-Plate Connections

Dominisse, Kyle Richard 14 December 2004 (has links)
Three full-scale experimental tests were conducted to investigate the strength and stiffness of weak-axis moment end-plate connections. Each test consisted of two girders connected to a column web with four-bolt extended moment end-plates. Two tests were conducted with bare steel. One test included a composite concrete slab that confined the top extension of the end-plate. Finite element models of the tests were created with the commercial software SAP2000. A simplified modeling procedure was developed to overcome the contact problems between the end-plates and column web, and between the bolts and holes in the end-plates and web. The simplified modeling procedure accurately predicted the experimental elastic stiffness, in the form of column web rotations, of the connections. Yield line theory was used to investigate the plastic strength of the column web. Several yield line patterns were examined. Analytical plastic moment strengths were very conservative when compared to the observed behavior of the column web. The experimental stiffness of the test with the concrete slab confining the top extension of the end-plate was compared to the stiffness of a similar test without a slab. The slab increased the elastic stiffness of the connection; however, after the concrete began cracking and crushing around the connection, the stiffness was greatly decreased. / Master of Science

Analysis of Tension-Zone Resistance in Bolted Steel Connections : Component Method according to Eurocode3

Hamodi, Sara, Fahandezh Sadi, Taha January 2017 (has links)
In order to predict the behaviour of bolted steel connections, different methods can be applied to calculate the design tension resistance. In this thesis, the tension resistance is evaluated in the context of the so called Component Method according to Eurocode 3 part 1-8. The design approach establishes a unified procedure of modelling steel joints. Each joint configuration is decomposed into its basic components depending on loading type. In order to design the resistance of components subjected to tensile forces, a simple substitute model, the so-called Tstub flange is adopted. The Component Method is rather complicated to apply for all joint configurations. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to create a brief and facilitated handbook covering the most common types of connections Kadesjös’ engineers deal with. The topic to be studied is rather comprehensive. Thus, this work is only focusing on the resistance calculation of components located in tension zone of HEA-sections in order to go deeper into the equivalent T-stub approach. To get a complete view about the designing procedure, general information about the Component Method are gathered by a literature study. Thereafter, the technical rules for calculation introduced in codes and standards were used to generate a general solution algorithm for two different connection configurations. The calculations have been performed using Mathcad, and the obtained results from a parametric analysis for particular profiles in each example are then summarised in tables and diagrams using Microsoft Excel.

Ribeiro, Luiz Fernando Loureiro 30 July 1998 (has links)
This work presents the theoretical and experimental results on the structural behavior of bolted end plate connections. They are designed by two traditional methods and analyzed by the finite element method. Comparisons are made between the FEM results and those obtained by an experimental analysis on 35 cruciform welded profile models, in which end plate thickness and bolt diameter was alternately varied. Special attention is paid for evaluating the influence of these parameters in the moment rotation behavior of the connections. Finally, the remarks and conclusions are presented and some topics for posterior researches are suggested.

Bergamasco, Pedro Diego Almeida 09 August 2012 (has links)
This work presents a study about the structural behavior of extended end-plate bolted beam-to-column steel connections. Ligações mistas viga-pilar - análise teórica e experimental / Composite beam-column connection – Theoretical and experimental analysis

Luciana Maria Bonvino Figueiredo 19 August 2004 (has links)
A composite joint is a joint between a composite beam and a steel or composite column in which reinforced concrete slab is take into account. The moment-rotation relationship of composite joints depends on a significant number of parameters besides the type and configuration of the steel connection, as for example: the amount of steel reinforcement of the slab and the degree of interaction between the slab and the steel beam section. Based on the Eurocode 3 method for bare steel connection (Components Method), some methods have been developed for prediction the moment capacities of composite connections. I this work, an adaptation of one of these methods has been developed in which steel sections and connections details common in Brazil are considered. A short experimental program was planed in order to understand the composite behaviour of extended end-plate composite beam-column connection. The test specimens were configured as cruciform type and cantilever type. Finally, a Finite Element model was built in Ansys software. The numerical modeling was found to have good approach with experimental results. Some analyses are done involving experimental, numerical and analytical results.
