There are in Brazil a set of multidisciplinary studies, generically known as ¿leisure studies¿, concerned about taking up the free time. Such studies arise in the thirties of the twentieth century, in a complex movement of policies implementation and systematization of knowledge which could make it viable the regulation of the duration of a day¿s work, and the custody of the free time (of children and working adults) generated due to the regulation of the remunerated rest. Such movement happens as part of the actions of the world bourgeoisie¿s reaction in order to Brazilian workers¿ mobilizations in the beginning of the century and the advances of communism in the world. Leisure studies were developed all through the twentieth century, becoming more intense as from the seventies, stimulated by the ¿S¿ System. Based on the presupposition that the notion of work is centralized in the understanding of leisure, as well as recognizing in Marx a central reference for the understanding of work, it was our purpose to observe the appropriation of this author¿s work by Brazilian leisure studies. The delimited texts are complete works presented in events, papers and books (or chapters) disseminated during the 20th and 21st centuries, in periodicals and publishers of national circulation. These texts concerning the appropriation of Marx¿s works in the scope of the leisure studies ¿ whose theoretical development is still unfinished ¿ present to the readers the instigating question of work and leisure perspectives, of the need and freedom in the capitalist as well as in the communist societies. Appropriating these references, it is our purpose to present a critical reflection concerning the appropriation which has already been accomplished, besides intending to theorize upon the possibilities that Marx¿ and Engels¿ work show us for the understanding of the leisure problem / Doutorado / Historia, Filosofia e Educação / Doutor em Educação
