Teacher cognition among tertiary-level Chinese English teachersKavanagh, Michael Christopher January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (DAppLing)--Macquarie University, Division of Linguistics and Psychology, Department of Linguistics, 2009. / Bibliography: p. 246-275. / Introduction -- The research context -- Literature review -- Research methodology -- Case study 1 (Lily) -- Case study 2 (Ailing) -- Case study 3 (Xinyu) -- Cross-case study -- Conclusions. / Teacher cognition studies are rare in the mainland Chinese context; they are also rare in other contexts similarly defined by common features such as non-native speaking language teachers, large classes, publicly-funded institutions, and mandated curricula or materials. This broadly qualitative investigation of three tertiary-level Chinese English teachers sought to elicit views and beliefs about language learning and teaching, their sources, and their links with classroom behaviour. A cyclical series of data collection (including autobiographical writing, interviews, lesson observations and stimulated-recall interviews, documentary data, and a group discussion) was employed to produce four linked studies: three individual case studies and a cross-case study. Interpretive data analysis, achieved through a process of constant comparison, was employed to reveal each teacher's views and beliefs. In order to ensure an emic perspective, each teacher's 'voice' is given prominence through the presentation of data. The interpretation of data suggests the importance of various levels of context to teachers' thinking, including the background Confucian approach to education, previous experiences as learners and teachers, and the situation the teachers encounter at both classroom and institutional levels. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / 275, [140] p. ill

Analysing trainee beliefs about thesis writing and professional development in a constructivist thesis writing experienceTapia Carlin, Rebeca Elena January 2009 (has links)
"December 2008". / Thesis (DAppLing)--Macquarie University, Division of Linguistics and Psychology, Dept. of Linguistics, 2009. / Bibliography: p. 299-327. / Introduction -- Literature review -- Study 1 -- Study 2 -- Conclusions. / The aim of this case study was to identify the beliefs of eight pre-service teachers about thesis writing and professional development while and after writing their BA thesis through diary and survey inquiry. This research was conducted in the teaching area of the major in Modern Languages (LEMO) from the Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP). The methodology used to identify trainee beliefs was applied in two periods: during the process to include reflection in action, and after the process obtaining reflection on action as suggested by Schön (1983, p. 26). Thus, the participants wrote their electronic dialogue diaries while taking the two Research Seminars and writing their thesis. In this diaries they expressed their thoughts and feelings, sent them to the teacher and the teacher answered them also via e-mail. Then, when the Research Seminars had finished, they answered the questionnaire called Thesis and Professional Development Questionnaire (TAPDQ), which was especially designed for this research taking insights from Eraut (1995), Fullan(1995), Burns et al (1999), Schmekes (2004) and Viaggio (1992). This questionnaire contains Likert scales and some open questions. The findings of these studies reveal that participants were aware of their lack of expertise in thesis writing and they looked for strategies to overcome this problem. Also, the findings suggest that the participants were benefited from the constructivist methodology employed in the Research Seminars. Most of the participants reported having acquired skills, knowledge, having improved their attitude and having become better students after writing their thesis. This doctoral thesis begins exploring an area that has not been explored on ELT teacher cognition at least as reported in the research reviews done by Borg (2003, 2006) and Reyes & Rodríguez (2007). It aims to contribute to get a better understanding the thesis writing processes in teacher education programmes in public universities in Mexico. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / xvii, 359 p

Previous issue date: 2014-01-24 / This work has as an object of study the academic process of teachers that are at the beginning of their careers starting from their oral and written autobiographical stories, motivated by the leading question: What experiences have the English teachers experienced before the teaching profession and in the beginning of their careers are configured as formative after they becoming Higher Education professionals? To respond to this leading question, there were stated the following objectives: General objective: To know and analyze the autobiographical stories of the English teachers that are working for UESPI in the English course, beginners in the higher education field about the formative experiences acquired before the teaching work and in the beginning of their careers. Specific objectives: 1) To describe and analyze the researched participants memories-reference revealing time, space and the context of formation and learning of the profession before entering the higher education; 2) To characterize and analyze the experiences lived by the interlocutors of the research when they started their careers of teaching in higher education; 3) To identify and discuss the effective reflections through the production of oral and written autobiographical narratives to reveal the experiences gathered by the research subjects all through their life trajectory. An autobiographical survey was carried on with a methodology of qualitative approach reaching out to the authors such as Clandinin and Connelly (1995, 2000), Bolívar (2002), Souza (2004, 2006a, 2006b), among others. Three English teachers collaborated with this study, all of them beginners in the career of higher education at UESPI, Parnaíba (PI). To achieve the objectives of this research, that was done through 2012, there were used the formation memorial, reflective letters and the interactive meetings. The content of the research corpus was analyzed based in Bardin s proposal (2006). The produced data were analyzed based on the theoretical approach studied about the fresh teacher, formative experiences of autobiographical stories, and they were organized around four key areas and their respective indicators: 1) First learning experiences: the experiences brought by each collaborator; 2) Schooling stories: school and university as formative environment; 3) Teaching formative experience: the practicing of teaching as a source of learning: 4) Autobiographical dialogues: Formative possibilities to work independently. The research interlocutors oral and written narratives confirmed that the formative process of each teacher is directly connected to its life trajectory that has guided the gathered learning and the developed practicing throughout their lifetime. What they bring to themselves is the formative experiences and memories-references that set apart the three protagonists of their own history.

Learners’ texts : a portrayal of the influence of certain varieties of isiXhosa on English texts and vice versaSpofana, Dumisani Godfrey 10 1900 (has links)
This thesis is about certain varieties of isiXhosa and their apparent influence on English and vice versa. IsiXhosa is a language mainly spoken in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of the Republic of South Africa. The study concentrates on certain varieties of isiXhosa that are spoken in the Eastern Cape Province. These varieties are isiBhaca, isiHlubi, isiMpondo, isiThembu and isiGcaleka. IsiGcaleka happens to be the standard variety. A map is provided to illustrate where these varieties are spoken.
The study looks at the learners’ texts which are written in isiXhosa and English. The learners who wrote these texts are in Grades 8 and 9 from selected schools in the areas of Mzimkhulu, Matatiele, Mbizana, Ngcobo and Butterworth. It is worth mentioning that Mzimkhulu has since been moved from the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu/Natal. The learners’ texts are analyzed and comments are provided for each analysis. The study also looks at how educators in selected schools relate with their learners when teaching both isiXhosa and English. Observations are made from the relationship between the educators and learners when the learners are taught isiXhosa and English.
The study also looks at the debate between standard and non-standard variety. Based on the discussion of both the standard variety and non-standard variety it is the view of the researcher that this notion of “standard” and “non-standard” needs to be challenged on all fronts. This is so because standardization occurs as a result of historical coincidence. The study further looks at the Language and Planning issues in the Republic of South Africa. It is important to note that language is the key to the heart of any nation and therefore whatever that is discussed about language should be sensitive to the people speaking that language. The study concludes with the fact that there is a need to train educators especially those who are going to teach African Languages. There is also a need to undertake studies on learners’ needs so that those who design the school curricula must do so knowing what is relevant to the learners in general. / African Languages / D. A profissão docente como prática ilustrada: o caso dos primeiros professores de inglês do BrasilSantana, Marcle Vanessa Menezes 09 July 2013 (has links)
The present study has as its objective a biobliographic research of English teachers who contributed to English language teaching in our country in their corresponding institutional contexts. In this sense, we followed the path which led to the construction of the European national ideal, whose underlying assumption was the institution of a national language. In addition, it timidly began during the Enlightenment and was consolidated in the nineteenth century. Moreover, we established the correlation between schooling and the process of teaching professionalization in the eighteenth century, taking into account the Portuguese- Brazilian case, which Pombal s reforms was the basis of laws dispatched during Brazil s empire. Furthermore, we analysed the trajectory of English language in Brazil through the
legislation, the selection of the most representative grammars and dictionaries and the role performed by translators and interpreters in the process of affirmation of English language in Brazil. At last, we narrated the professional trajectories of the first English teachers in our country, Eduardo Thomaz Colville, John Joyce and Guilherme Paulo Tillbury, in the condition of Enlightenment intellectuals as well as responsible for the affirmation of that profession as well as English language during the nineteenth century in Brazil.

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In recent years, with the expansion of technologies, we have witnessed the emergence of different devices, programs and applications, making Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICTs) increasingly present in the world, in different contexts in the era of Digital Culture (SANTAELLA, 2003; BERTOLDO, SALTO AND MILL, 2018; KENSKI, 2018). Thus, in the contemporary educational perspective, the challenges arising from this new era are emphasized, since, on the one hand, these tools can enhance the work of educators, without spatiotemporal delimitation, on the other, they require support and Digital Competence from teachers and students (UNESCO, 2008, 2014, 2016). In this sense, there are countless discussions about teacher education, in a critical-reflexive (FREIRE, 1979; MOURA-FILHO, 2011) and perceptive view (MERLEAU-PONTY, 1999; MATOS E JARDILINO, 2016), for teaching languages combined with the use of technologies (BAX, 2003; LEFFA, 2012; PAIVA, 2013; MARQUES-SCHÄFER AND ROZENFELD, 2017). Furthermore, there is a mismatch between the transformational speed of DICTs and the delay in integrating them in Education and teacher education, as well as the conditions of infrastructure, proposition and use of technological resources (KENNISNET, 2015; ALMEIDA AND VALENTE, 2016). Based on this scenario, the present work aims to analyze the perceptions of English teachers in the public school about the relevance of using DICTs in the classroom, the infrastructure for such use ...
