The English textbook produced in-house and the learner: a discursive analysis of the representations of student and possible implications on their identity constitution

Lima, Ana Carolina Albuquerque de 20 October 2017 (has links)
Over the last two decades, the search for languages courses that teach English as a Foreign Language has increased significantly, therefore, there has been some growth in the number of people who are interpellated by English textbooks. Based on the premise that the pedagogical resource in question takes part in the production and circulation of meanings and, thus, in the learners identity constitution, we intend to analyze the discursive functioning of textbooks produced in-house and used for around 7 years by a determined language course, through the representations of learner on them. We have also invited students in context of use of these textbooks to answer a questionnaire, which aimed at understanding how the representations gathered from these textbooks contribute to that subjects identity construction. This research is grounded in the Discourse Analysis perspective (PÊCHEUX, 1975; ORLANDI, 1999; CORACINI, 2003). In general, we observed that, despite some attempts of, supposedly, escaping from the generalization of imported English textbooks, in-house textbooks, at times, follow the patterns established by international publications. Moreover, we noticed that there might be restrictions of the language diversity in the in-house materials that were analyzed. The discursivity of the national textbooks and the learners discursive sequences suggest that the materials would be able to include all the possible formulations in the language being studied, for each different scenario of interaction. The student, theoretically, would know what to say in a specific situation and would be capable of predicting the answer, precluding (or, at least, reducing) the failures that are inherent to the communication process. There could be, consequently, an attempt to homogenize the meanings, through representations that point to the illusion of control, neutrality and singular truths. It is suggested, then, the view of language as a tool to be manipulated by a subject that would be, most of the times, aware of what he says, and that would accept and reinforce the authority of the textbook.

Readability : an Analysis of English Textbooks for Swedish School Years 7-9

Langeborg, Liselott January 2010 (has links)

The purpose of this study was to analyze texts from four English textbook series for Swedish school years 7-9 as regards their readability and to investigate whether the text difficulty progresses within series with grade level and with each assigned difficulty level. The study also wished to make comparisons between these textbook series to determine if they are equivalent as regards their average readability level. The readability formulas Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid in Microsoft Word 2007 was used for calculation of the readability grade levels of a selection of 231 texts from the series Good Stuff, Happy, Time and Wings. The results from both formulas indicated that the texts in general become more difficult for each school year and with assigned level. However, the study showed that there are differences among the four series as regards their average difficulty levels and that there is a great difficulty range among texts.

The use of English passive voice by Taiwanese college students

Unknown Date (has links)
The present study investigates the use of English passive voice by Taiwanese college students. The purpose is to see how Taiwanese college students use English passive voice on sentential and discourse level, and if they understand the functions of English passive voice from their performances. Twenty-seven college students participated in this study. And their uses of English passive voice were investigated with three different instruments, Single-sentence Translation, Passage Completion and English Compositions. The results of the analysis showed that Taiwanese college students do not have complete understanding on English passive voice. In Single-sentence Translation, the participants fail to recognize the correct voice in translating Chinese sentences when Chinese passive markers are removed. This finding points out that the participants do not have the knowledge of English verb types, their argument patterns, and semantic roles. Because they are unable to identify the type of English verbs in the sentences, they are not aware of the semantic roles of noun phrases accompanying the verbs in the sentences. As a result, they are unable to produce correct English passive sentences. In Passage Completion, however, the participants’ performances indicate they understand English passive voice is a useful device in facilitating the connections between the sentences and maintaining thematic progression of passages. In English Compositions, it is found that the participants demonstrated ways of using English passive voice that are not observed in the previous two research instruments. Their performances show that they know how to use this structure to facilitate the cohesion as well as coherence of their writings, and how to use English passive voice to establish the idea they want to elaborate on in the paragraph. To see how Taiwanese EFL learners build up their knowledge of English passive voice, English textbooks of junior high and senior high school are reviewed to see how this structure is presented. It is found that much emphasis is placed on the introduction of English passive voice on sentential and syntactic level, neglecting the introduction on discourse and semantic level. Based on the findings in the present study, it is suggested that the teaching of English passive voice include the introduction of this structure on discourse and semantic levels to help Taiwanese EFL learners gain a more comprehensive understanding of English passive voice.

O discurso sobre o livro didático de inglês: a construção da verdade na sociedade de controle / The discourse about the English textbook: the construction of truth in the society of control

Braga, Maria Dolores Wirts 25 April 2014 (has links)
Our aim to investigate the discourse about the English textbook inevitably touches on the issue of the textbook as a discourse of truth. Driven by the hypothesis that the power of discourse of truth, often attributed to the textbook, is built by the discourse which speaks about the textbook, our research aims to study the functioning mode and the effects of that discourse which we name discourse about the English textbook. Although English textbooks have been adopted in some courses by some public school teachers here and there, this is the first time that the Brazilian federal government has proposed the nation-wide adoption of foreign language textbooks (English and/or Spanish) through the National Textbook Program for the year of 2011 (PNLD 2011) by selecting titles for teachers to choose from and by bearing all the expenses involved in the process. Our research follows the conceptualization of Discourse Analysis as established by Michel Pêcheux. Those concepts guide the analysis of the excerpts in our research corpus, which is composed of three segments. The official discourse segment contains excerpts from the most relevant documents issued by the government on the PNLD 2011. The media discourse segment comprises online news and articles issued by governmental as well as non-governmental news agencies and by schools and associations sites. The professional discourse segment holds the answers provided by public school teachers of English (6th to 9th grades) to two questionnaires on the adoption of the English textbook. Their answers were collected in two distinct moments. The first questionnaire was answered by the teachers before textbook collections were pre-selected to integrate the PNLD 2011. The second questionnaire was answered by teachers who already used the PNLD 2011 textbooks. The analysis of the discourse about the English textbook led us to the perception of effects which confirm the functioning of the English textbook as a discourse of truth since it is represented as such by the discourse about it. Through discourse analysis, we have also observed effects which are typical of the functioning mode of societies of control, as briefly defined by Michel Foucault ([1979] 2004) and further contended by Gilles Deleuze ([1990] 1992). In the interdiscourse axis, modulating principles were observed in enouncements, as they ensure limitless postponements, demand continuous updating, motivate the individual and ensure control. In the intradiscourse axis, the linguistic materiality often presented excerpts marked by modalization, which softens the remarks and gives rise to multiple possibilities. The effects observed seem to work as modulating principles, as formulated by Deleuze ([1990] 1992), which confirms that the relationship between power and knowledge is already functioning in the modes of societies of control

ANÁLISE DA SEÇÃO DE LEITURA DA SÉRIE TOP NOTCH SOB UMA PERSPECTIVA MULTIMODAL / ANALYSIS OF THE TOP NOTCH READING SESSION IN A MULTIMODAL PERSPECTIVE

Machado Junior, José Ferreira 12 March 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The presence and relevance of images in discursive genres of contemporary communication has led to concerns about the formation of visually literate readers. Among the multimodal genres, we foreground the textbook for English learning (LDI), which is typically rich in terms of images. However, the activities suggested in such materials rarely point to the visual language exploration (GRAY, 2010). Thus, in this study, the reading sessions of the Top Notch English textbook series are analyzed, together with the methodological instructions of the Teacher‟s guide, aiming to verify to what extent the reading of the images of the discursive genres is explored and the nature of this reading. A context of genre consumption analysis was carried out in the Brazilian Military School System (SCMB). Within the theoretical framework of Critical Genre Analysis (MOTTA-ROTH, 2008) and using the Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS, van LEEUWEN, 2006) as lexical-grammatical reference, all the ten reading sessions of intermediate level Top Notch textbook were analyzed. These reading sessions are composed of semiotic complexes assembled with verbal written language and images. The analysis showed that 32.8% of the reading activities are offered to be approached multimodally through LDI and Teacher‟s guide instructions and also that 67% of the images of the reading sessions are activated for visual reading, what points to the role of the image as a meaning carrier, not as an illustration. There was a predominance of representational meanings (71%) explored in the multimodal reading activities, majorly placed in the pre reading stage, as a way to prepare for the verbal reading. However, the reading activities of corpus do not promote multimodal critical literacy, once they do not stimulate on the student readers the development of critical consciousness, one which unveils the power relations that occur via the genre and also the relationship between the text and the context where it takes place. In the multiliteracies perspective, we hope to contribute for the development of a broader reading towards the comprehension of represented meanings, not only in written verbal language, but also in the images of multimodal texts.

From entertainment to criticism: critical multimodal literacy in the english textbook based on comics as genres

Predebon, Nathalia Rodrigues Catto 26 February 2015 (has links)
The concepts of multimodality and genre and a critical perspective on language have been recurrent in contemporary debates, both in the local context (BRASIL, 2006; MOTTA-ROTH, 2008b; NASCIMENTO, 2012; to name a few) and global (COPE; KALANTZIS, 2000, 2008, 2012; KRESS, 2003; JEWITT, 2005, 2008; O'HALLORAN, 2008, to name a few). However, little is known about how to implement these concepts through explicit and interrelated ways in the pedagogical context. Informed by the concept of recontextualization of these concepts, related to current knowledge of language science, this study aimed at investigating to what extent and how activities based on comics genres offer potential to promote what I call critical multimodal literacy for English teaching. Based on the proposal of Critical Genre Analysis (MOTTA-ROTH, 2008b), by combining a language theory based on a systemic functional and a social semiotic approach, a genre-based pedagogical perspective and a critical approach to language, I intend to verify critical multimodal literacy practices in English textbooks, part of the National Textbook Program for Modern Foreign Language in high school level education (BRASIL, 2009b, 2011). In order to meet the objective of the research: 1) the contexts of production, circulation and consumption of the textbooks, considered under the concept of genre, were investigated in search of references to the concepts of genre, multimodality and critical literacy (guided by the perspective of multiliteracies), which theoretically and methodologically associated generate a proposal for critical multimodal literacy; 2) activities that explore comics genres were selected and analyzed on the basis of linguistic and contextual strata of Systemic Functional Linguistics exploited in combination with epistemic moves which describe the analytical and pedagogical objectives of the activities; 3) contextual and textual data were combined to interpret and explain to what extent and how the activities have the potential to promote critical multimodal literacy. The results showed that the activities offer great potential to explore practices of critical multimodal literacy, although they lack systematic application of the concepts of multimodality and critical literacy. Occurrences of activities were observed across all strata, although the visual semiotic resources were usually explored in graphic and lexicogrammatical strata. Although fewer occurrences of activities focused on the analysis of the contextual stratum of discourse were identified, there is potential for expansion of the discussions, as the teacher s guide and the evaluation presented in the Textbooks Guide indicate. In this sense, the emphasis lies in the role of teachers as language experts and key players in the educational process and not in the textbook. The textbook functions as a mediator genre of social practices of the school context, which appears to be displaced from the center of this process, as one of many discursive practices which recontextualize discourses from language science in the educational context.

A Study of Factors for Senior High English Teachers in the Greater Taipei Area in Textbook Selection /

Ko,Tsung-ming Unknown Date (has links)
The present study was aimed at investigating what factors English teachers of senior high schools in greater Taipei area took into consideration when selecting textbooks, with particular focus on the comparison of differences between public and private schools, urban and rural schools, and senior and young teachers. Meanwhile, textbook compilers’ considerations were also explored to see if their concerns were in accordance with those of teachers. The questionnaire survey was the main research method of the present study. Moreover, the interview method was also conducted to probe further information. In total, 10 English teachers and 6 textbook compilers were interviewed in the present research. Based on the findings of the present study, four crucial points were concluded as suggested. 1. Most students’ English proficiency and learning needs as well as accurate and proper English were the primary concerns of the general English teachers and textbook compliers. 2. When selecting textbooks, public school teachers emphasized salespersons’ service and the textbook’s intact package, whereas private school teachers considered Joint College Entrance Examination, and school’s leadership more. 3. Likewise, urban school teachers took salespersons’ service, Communicative Approach and cultural component into more account than rural school teachers who were more concerned about teachers’ various roles such as teachers, mentors or administrative personnel, their own English proficiency, and textbooks’ price. 4. However, no significant differences were found between senior teachers and young teachers. Generally speaking, internal factors such as appropriateness, naturalness of English, and rationale, organization of the textbook were the primary concerns for senior high English teachers in textbook selection. However, English teachers of senior high schools were also concerned about external factors such as English proficiency and learning needs, Joint College Entrance Examination, school’s leadership, and salespersons’ service. Therefore, it is suggested that publishing companies should take external factors into more consideration to ensure that textbook being compiled can be more comprehensive in all aspects and be related to needs of both teachers and students. Meanwhile, teachers should take a firm stance based on their updated professional knowledge in making any sound judgments related to textbook selection and evaluation.
