Developing a Framework to measure Enterprise Architecture Debts / Utveckling av ramverk för mätning av företagsarkitekturskuld

Saha, Parumita January 2020 (has links)
Technical debt is used to describe the changing or to maintain a system due to expedient shortcuts done during its development. In the context of the software development industry, technical debt is regarded as a critical issue in terms of the negative consequences such as increased software development cost, low product quality, decreased maintainability, and slowed progress to the long-term success of developing software. Code Smells are well informed in the domain of Technical Debt. They indicate to the common bad practices that may impair the future quality of the software system. By identifying those Code Smells, it is possible to give an improved solution or make the developers aware of a possible deficiency. I explore the premise that technical debt within the enterprise should be viewed as a tool. Extensible and Appropriate tools can check the Code Smells automatically and improve the quality assessment accordingly. However, in the field of Enterprise Architecture(EA), common bad habits in EA can be called EA Smells. EA Smells itself can be a component of EA Debt. Enterprise Architecture Debt can be defined as such a metric that depicts the deviation of the currently present state of an enterprise from a hypothetical ideal state. In this thesis, we introduce SmellCull as an extensible tool for capturing, tracking and managing Enterprise Architecture debt in the EA field. SmellCull allows measuring different kinds of Enterprise Architecture debts for EA Model. SmellCull is extensible since different types of Model can be integrated as input into the tool environment and provides developers with a lightweight tool to capture EA debt and make it easier to understand them indicating corresponding parts in the implementation. The tool is used to create propagation paths for the EA debt. This allows for an up-to-date and accurate presentation of EA debt to be upheld, which enables developer conducted implementation-level micromanagement as well as higher-level debt management.Since the tool is sophisticated enough, automated detection supports the design process and ongoing change of EAS(Enterprise Architecture System). This includes the strategic development of EAS with the corresponding roadmaps, as well as design assurance and performance monitoring to assess the quality of data in EA repositories and the compliance with certain standards defined by EA Smells. Due to the limited scope of master thesis, the tool will identify a few number of EA debt. At the end, some future work suggestions in the context of identifying more salable Enterprise Architecture Debts with this tool are given.

Utilizing Consumer Preferences to Promote Values Awareness in Information Systems Development

Svee, Eric Oluf January 2016 (has links)
The challenges of developing the information systems (IS) that support modern enterprises are becoming less about engineering and more about people. Many of the technical issues of the past, such as hardware size and power, connectivity, and robust software, are engineering problems that have largely been solved. In the next stage of computing, the human factor will be far more important than it has been in the past: the colors of an interface or the shape of an icon are the engineering problems of the past, and the availability and usefulness of such basic solutions is rapidly coming to a close. A new paradigm is needed that provides a roadmap of higher level conceptions and values, one about humane computing. A part of this older, mechanistic approach are quantitative, economic values whose impact on IS are readily visible and acknowledged within software engineering. However, qualitative values, and in particular consumer preferences, have been researched to a lesser degree, and there has been very little direct application.  To create the next-generation information systems, requirements engineers and systems developers need new methods to capture the real preferences of consumers, conceptualize these abstract concepts, and then relate such preferences to concrete requirements for information systems. To address this problem, this thesis establishes a conceptual link between the preferences of consumers and system requirements by accommodating the variations between them and expressing them via a conceptual model. Modeling such preferences and values so that they can be used as requirements for IS development is the primary contribution of this work. This is accomplished via a design science research paradigm to support the creation of the works’ primary artifact—the Consumer Preference-aware Meta-Model (CPMM). CPMM is intended to improve the alignment between business and information systems by capturing and concretizing the real preferences of consumers and then expressing such preferences via the requirements engineering process, with the eventual output being information systems. CPMM’s development relies on theoretical research contributions within three areas in information systems—Business Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, and Requirements Engineering—whose relationships to consumer values have been under-researched and under-applied. The case studies included in this thesis each demonstrate the significance of consumer preferences to each of these three areas.  In the first, a set of logical mappings between CPMM and a common approach to business strategy (strategy maps/balanced scorecards) is produced. In the second, CPMM provides the conceptual undergirding to process a massive amount of unstructured consumer-generated text to generate system requirements for the airline industry. In the concluding case, an investigation of foreign and domestic students at Swedish universities is structured through CPMM, one that first discovers the requirements for a consumer preference-based online education and then produces feature models for such a software product line-based system. The significance of CPMM as a lens for discovering new concepts and highlighting important information within consumer preference data is clearly seen, and the usefulness of the meta-model is demonstrated by its broad and beneficial applicability within information systems practice and research.

Analýza a návrh podnikové architektury / Analysis and design of Enterprise Architecture

Jindřich, Martin January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to the Enterprise Architecture. Author is trying to verify theoretical knowledge in a business practice. The thesis is therefore divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part deals with the importance of architecture, the benefits of EA and comparison of two major EA frameworks (Zachman framework, TOGAF). Author describes their disadvantages and possible improvements. Focus is placed on issues of ICT services architecture. The architecture of ICT services is not yet in practice, despite its advantages, which I describe. I am trying to describe several points of ADM, which is part of the TOGAF on the basis of theoretical knowledge. To apply the knowledge I choose part of the banking sector. I describe loan process and its IT solution.

Strategies to Improve Adoption of the Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework

Caruso, Michael John 01 January 2019 (has links)
The U.S. federal government spends millions of taxpayer dollars to implement the federal enterprise architecture framework (FEAF). This qualitative multiple case study extracted successful FEAF implementation strategies used by agencies in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. The population for this study included 10 information technology (IT) planners in 3 federal agencies. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and triangulated in comparison to 33 public documents. General system theory was used as a conceptual framework for the study, and data analysis included reviews of the academic literature, thematic analysis, and member checking to identify themes and codes related to successful aspects of the strategies collected. Key themes emerging from data analysis included critical leadership support for implementation, organizational culture, practices for maintaining an accurate organizational history, and means to maintain this knowledge. Based on the findings, the implications of this study for positive social change include efficient, effective, and reliable government services for U.S. citizens and a significant reduction in IT spending in federal agencies. In turn, the results may result in effective federal services and effective use of taxpayer money.

Study on Service-Oriented Manufacturing Resources Planning Management Model

Chou, Chang-hsing 01 July 2010 (has links)
Located in this technology island, not only because of large global IT products but also due to product relationship between industrial characteristics, business models need to change in response to raise the necessary decisions to respond more quickly. Therefore need to review internal auxiliary production resources, such as:collaboration with the organization of the mobilization, equipment and information systems support; but unfortunately in the past often used in information systems into the methodology of "process oriented", this method has become standardized work considerable help, but the allocation of resources to response or re-engineering the organization become very rigid and difficult but flexible rapid reaction with the corporate policy, so we need a rapid reaction response to organizational decision-making methodology of doing things. This research adopts enterprise architecture method to construct the service-oriented manufacturing resource planning management model (SOMRPMM). By this methodology, "service-oriented" is used to replace the traditional "process-oriented" planning. From the very beginning of manufacturing resource planning, the services, operations, and task behaviors are all clearly defined as to meet the realm of structure-behavior coalescence (SBC). Policy makers can create cost-effective coordination of resource allocation, adjusting the organizational changes to enhance the implementation of reengineering and organizational learning.

Study on Architecture-Oriented Customer Relationship Management Model

Chi-Tse, Lu 14 January 2008 (has links)
In recent years, owing to the network, the information science and technology, and the telecommunications industry¡¦s popularization, make the interaction between the enterprise and customer more frequent. The more rigid marketing to customer, the higher quality of product and service can be applied to the customer request. How to dig the high profit rate customer in the general customer group, and maintain good the interaction relationship among the customers, and detain the customers who already has, then becomes a key factor to adopt the Customer Relationship Management (CRM). In this research, we find that most CRM literature focused on the case study, or adopted the key factor discussion and the theory of CRM elaboration. The main purpose of our research is to define and develop an Architecture-Oriented Customer Relationship Management Model (AOCRMM). This model provides the information and the way of construction of CRM, so the entire construction of CRM can be easily understood. In this model, the sufficient defines structure element, service of structure element, and behavior. By unifying structure viewpoints, behavior viewpoints, and resources viewpoints, we then construct the structure behavior coalescence for a CRM system. We conclude that AOCRMM, being an integration model, enables enterprise organization, IT system, internal business processes, etc. to be a single interface to customers. Also AOCRMM makes the organization behavior be presented easily the resources be used effortlessly, and have a good communication effect of organization and external environment.

Study on Architecture-Oriented Court Affairs Management Model

Chou, Hsien-hui 16 June 2009 (has links)
For all business process reengineering (BPR) projects, the failure rate is up to 70%. Checking over the reasons that cause the projects to fail, the major unsuccessful factor of BPR resulting from that process-oriented aspect is concerning too much about efficiency and technology, ignoring the related subjects of organizational structures and agents. Most of all, it lacks an integrated solution for both structures and behaviors in an organization. That is, so far there is no research to study the coherent affection caused by business reengineering for both organizational structures and organizational behaviors. This thesis aims to develop an Architecture-Oriented model for the court affairs management. In this model, structure elements, services, and interaction flow for court affairs management are well defined. Adopting this model, officers can understand the entire picture of the court more easily and collect the essential information for organizational structures and organizational behaviors more effortlessly. Architecture-Oriented Court Affairs Management Model, abbreviated as AOCAMM, extremely depends on the theory and method of enterprise architecture. Using the structure behavior coalescence approach embedded in AOCAMM, we are able to describe working situations of organization, business processes, and information systems clearly enough to reduce business reengineering risks. The major achievement of this research is to advise a contemporary methodology for better planning and managing government reengineering projects.

Assessment of Enterprise Information Security : - How to make it Credible and Efficient

Johansson, Erik January 2005 (has links)
<p>Information is an important business asset in today’s enterprises. Hence enterprise information security is an important system quality that must be carefully managed. Although enterprise information security is acknowledged as one of the most central areas for enterprise IT management, the topic still lacks adequate support for decision making on top-management level.</p><p>This composite thesis consists of four articles which presents the Enterprise Information Security Assessment Method (EISAM), a comprehensive method for assessing the current state of the enterprise information security. The method is useful in helping guide top-management’s decision-making because of the following reasons: 1) it is easy to understand, 2) it is prescriptive, 3) it is credible, and 4) it is efficient.</p><p>The assessment result is easy to understand because it presents a quantitative estimate. The result can be presented as an aggregated single value, abstracting the details of the assessment. The result is easy to grasp and enables comparisons both within the organization and in terms of industry in general.</p><p>The method is prescriptive since it delivers concrete and traceable measurements. This helps guide top-level management in their decisions regarding enterprise-wide information security by highlighting the areas where improvements efforts are essential.</p><p>It is credible for two reasons. Firstly, the method presents an explicit and transparent definition of enterprise information security. Secondly, the method in itself includes an indication of assessment uncertainty, expressed in terms of confidence levels.</p><p>The method is efficient because it focuses on important enterprise information security aspects, and because it takes into account how difficult it is to find security related evidence. Being resource sparse it enables assessments to take place regularly, which gives valuable knowledge for long-term decision-making.</p><p>The usefulness of the presented method, along with its development, has been verified through empirical studies at a leading electric power company in Europe and through statistical surveys carried out among information security experts in Sweden.</p><p>The success from this research should encourage further researcher in using these analysis techniques to guide decisions on other enterprise architecture attributes.</p>
