The development of solution algorithms for compressible flows

Slack, David Christopher 28 July 2008 (has links)
This work investigates three main topics. The first of these is the development and comparison of time integration schemes on two-dimensional unstructured meshes. Both explicit and implicit solution algorithms for the two-dimensional Euler equations on unstructured grids are presented. Cell-centered and cell-vertex finite volume upwind schemes utilizing Roe’s approximate Riemann solver are developed. For the cell-vertex scheme, a four stage Runge-Kutta time integration with and without implicit residual averaging, a point Jacobi method, a symmetric point Gauss-Seidel method, and two methods utilizing preconditioned sparse matrix solvers are investigated. For the cell-centered scheme, a Runge-Kutta scheme, an implicit tridiagonal relaxation scheme modeled after line Gauss-Seidel, a fully implicit LU decomposition, and a hybrid scheme utilizing both Runge-Kutta and LU methods are presented. A reverse Cuthill-McKee renumbering scheme is employed for the direct solver in order to decrease CPU time by reducing the fill of the Jacobian matrix. Comparisons are made for both first-order and higher-order accurate solutions using several different time integration algorithms. Higher-order accuracy is achieved by using multi-dimensional monotone linear reconstruction procedures. Results for flow over a transonic circular arc are compared for the various time integration methods. The second topic involves an interactive adaptive remeshing algorithm. The interactive adaptive remeshing algorithm utilizing a frontal grid generator is compared to a single grid calculation. Several device dependent interactive graphics interfaces have been developed along with a device independent DI-3000 interface which can be employed on any computer that has the supporting software including the Cray-2 supercomputers Voyager and Navier. Solutions for two-dimensional, inviscid flow over a transonic circular arc and a Mach 3.0 internal flow with an area change are examined. The final topic examined in this work is the capabilities developed for a structured three-dimensional code called GASP. The capabilities include: generalized chemistry and thermodynamic modeling, space marching, memory management through the use of binary C Input/Output, and algebraic and two-equation eddy viscosity turbulence modeling. Results are given for a Mach 1.7 three-dimensional analytic forebody, a Mach 1.38 axisymmetric nozzle with hydrogen-air combustion, a Mach 14.1 15° ramp, and Mach 0.3 viscous flow over a flat plate. The incorporation of these capabilities and the two-dimensional unstructured time integration schemes into a three-dimensional unstructured solver is also discussed. / Ph. D.

I AM MORE THAN WHAT I APPEAR: THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE JOURNALISTS

Unknown Date (has links)
This study investigates the phenomenon of intersectionality between race and gender on the lived experiences of African American female broadcast journalists in the state of Florida. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted and compared to determine reoccurring themes taking place throughout each participant’s experience in broadcast journalism as a result of their race and gender. Race, appearance, racial mentoring, and professional advancement were the common themes that emerged in each interview. Although there is a significant amount of research on African American women in the workplace, there is a greater need to focus on the field of broadcast journalism and the African American women who work in this field. Previous research on African American women in the workplace shows that women of color experience different work environments and treatment. The findings suggest African American female broadcast journalists experience a different work environment compared to their colleagues due to the intersection of race and gender. Investigação ambiental em posto de abastecimento de combustiveis no municipio de Seropedica - RJ / Environmental survey of a Seropedica city gas station, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Silva, Charles Santos 29 August 2006 (has links)
Orientador: Job Jesus Batista / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Geociencias / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-07T22:19:06Z (GMT). Brazilian environmental laws regulate the technical standards regarding the installation, equipaments and operation of gas stations in addition to requiring environrnental licenses. Accidents may expose the population to toxic and flammable substances. In Seropédica city (state of Rio de Janeiro), 11 gas stations (9 commercial and 2 non-commercial) were identified. The risk of the groundwater contamination was checked interacting the probably contaminant load created by those establishments with a vulnerability map of local aquifers. A case study was selected to allow a more detailed investigation of a non-commercial gas station that supplied a university in this city for more than 20 years. The gas station operated equipaments and a plant out of compliance with environmental laws. It is a contamination point source in the campus area. The research area is about 1300 m2 and is located under a rocky alteration mantle. The aquifer on residual soils in the city belongs to a local fractured aquifer system. First, a quantitative gas screening was performed on the soil with a portable monitor to identify optimum placement of boreholes. Samples were collected to ascertain soil properties. Later, six monitoring wells were installed to provide hidrodinamic characterization and to collect groundwater samples. On soil and groundwater samples was quantified the organic compounds that are used to identify the presence of fuels in the environrnent. The levels in the samples were compared with standards established by the Rio de Janeiro environrnental agency. Monitoring well number 5 revealed free phase (consequently, the area is contaminated). The source is a leaking diesel tank that is in operation. A residual gasoline phase was also observed (during the drilling of monitoring well number 2) which was associated with an old leaking tank (actually this tank is off operation). In other wells the organic compounds are in the acceptable limits of potability / Mestrado / Administração e Politica de Recursos Minerais / Mestre em Geociências

Using co-located radars and instruments to analyse ionespheric events over South Africa

Athieno, Racheal January 2012 (has links)
Space weather and its effect on technological systems are important for scientific research. Developing an understanding of the behaviour, sources and effects of ionospheric events form a basis for improving space weather prediction. This thesis attempts to use co-located radars and instruments for the analysis of ionospheric events over South Africa. The HF Doppler radar, ionosonde, Global Positioning System (GPS) and GPS ionospheric scintillation monitor (GISTM) receivers are co-located in Hermanus (34.4°S, 19.2°E), one of the observatories for the space science directorate of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA). Data was obtained from these radars and instruments and analysed for ionospheric events. Only the Hermanus station was selected for this analysis, because it is currently the only South African station that hosts all the mentioned radars and instruments. Ionospheric events identified include wave-like structures, Doppler spread, sudden frequency deviations and ionospheric oscillations associated with geomagnetic pulsations. For the purpose of this work, ionospheric events are defined as any unusual structures observed on the received signal and inferred from observations made by the HF Doppler radar. They were identified by visual inspection of the Doppler shift spectrograms. The magnitude and nature of the events vary, depending on their source and were observed by all, some or one instrument. This study suggests that the inclusion of a wider data coverage and more stations in South Africa merit consideration, especially since plans are underway to host a co-located radar network similar to that in Hermanus at at least three additional observatory sites in South Africa. This study lays a foundation for multi-station co-located radar and instrument observation and analysis of ionospheric events which should enhance the accuracy of space weather and HF communication prediction.

Understanding interprofessional education : a multiple-case study of students, faculty, and administrators

Henkin, Katherine 25 February 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Although interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities can help prepare students for future practice and patient-centered care, many health professions students in the country are not educated in an environment with opportunities to learn with, from, or about students from other health professions. With upcoming curricular changes at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and the Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSN), IPE remains at the forefront of these changes in both schools. To date, few studies have explored student, faculty, and administrators’ conceptualizations of IPE prior to formal implementation. Additionally, previous studies have not compared IPE conceptualizations across these groups. This multiple-case study explores and compares how groups of stakeholders from the IUSM (Indianapolis) and the IUSN (Indianapolis) conceptualize IPE. Data collection included the examination of discipline-specific public documents and one-on-one interviews (N=25) with pre-licensure students, clinical faculty, and administrators from each school. Coding and extraction of themes transpired through within-case and cross-case analysis and data supported the following findings: the ‘business of medicine’ may prevent IPE from becoming a priority in education; stakeholders’ conceptualizations of IPE are shaped through powerful experiences in education and practice; students desire more IPE opportunities at the institution; stakeholders at the IUSN have a long-standing investment in IPE; and the institution requires a ‘culture shift’ in order to sustain IPE efforts. The findings suggest that IPE belongs in all education sectors and IPE efforts deserve reward and reimbursement. The findings also insinuate that leadership, roles, and team training education belong in IPE and IPE culture requires all individuals’ (e.g., student, faculty, administrators, patients) commitment. Importantly, the institution must continue IPE development, research, and dissemination. These findings can help shape curricula as time progresses, increase the likelihood of developing a successful new curriculum, and prompt ongoing reflection about IPE. This information can influence how institutions approach IPE and may lead to a more successful and informed IPE curriculum in the first years of implementation. And, hopefully what is learned through IPE will be translated into healthcare practice environments.
