Understanding SHERQ managerial perspectives of the risks and oppotunities in ISO 14001:2015 implementation in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

The implementation of ISO 14001:2015 is aligned with various risks and opportunities, the identification and addressing of which is key in the successful implementation of the ISO 14001:2015 certification. The Durban region is a pollution ‘hotspot’ within KwaZulu-Natal. Assessment of the opportunities and risks of ISO 14001:2015 implementation within the region is key as it can potentially assist with proactive mitigation of risks and the effective utilization of opportunities. The aim of the study is to understand SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environmental, Risk and Quality) managerial perspectives of opportunities and risks of ISO 14001:2015 implementation in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The following objectives were outlined: To identify ISO 14001 implementation opportunities and risks internationally and nationally by means of an extensive review of international as well as national literature sources, to generate an evaluation framework to assess SHERQ managerial perspectives of risks and opportunities of ISO 14001:2015 implementation within Durban and to analyse SHERQ managerial responses to the ISO 14001:2015 implementation risks and opportunities within the Durban region. The methods included identifying primary opportunities and risks in ISO 14001:2015 from the literature review through an evaluation framework, thereafter, presenting these in questionnaires distributed among SHERQ managers in Durban via email and LinkedIn. Of 62 questionnaires distributed, 42 participants responded. The respondent’s perspectives were assessed through SPSS identifying key risks and opportunities. Objective 1 was achieved through the literature review in which ISO 14001 implementation risks and opportunities were identified. Objective 2 was achieved by generating the evaluation framework which assimilated implementation risks and opportunities. Objective 3 was achieved through the analysis of the responses of respondents to ISO 14001:2015 implementation risks and opportunities. Study results showed that, in line with international reports, 57.2% of all respondents agreed that the maintenance costs of compliance to the standard are high and 76.2% of respondents shared the perspective that company resources are better managed. Respondents were more agreeable to positive statements, indicating opportunities outweighing the risks. Furthermore, despite the risks, there are opportunities from an industry perspective such as increased investor inputs and increased top management involvement. A follow up study is recommended in the Durban region addressing ISO 14001 implementation risks, opportunities, and their investment impacts in order to further hone in on the organizational implications of certification. From an academic standpoint, multiple studies have posited that ISO 14001:2015 implementation resulted in improved financial outcomes but are associated with high implementation costs and it is recommended that a critical cost versus profits analysis into ISO 14001:2015 implementation be undertaken in the Durban region. / Die Internasionale Organisasie vir Standaardisering se ISO 14001-omgewingstandaard spreek fasette van omgewingsprestasie aan. Die Durban-streek is ʼn besoedlingsbrandpunt in KwaZulu-Natal. Evaluering van die geleenthede en risiko’s van die implementering van ISO 14001:2015 binne die streek is van kardinale belang, aangesien dit moontlik kan help met die proaktiewe vermindering van risiko’s en die effektiewe benutting van geleenthede. Die doel van die studie is om SHERQ-bestuursperspektiewe van geleenthede en risiko’s van ISO 14001:2015-implementering in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, te begryp. Die metodes het ingesluit die identifisering van primêre geleenthede en risiko’s in ISO 14001:2015 vanuit die literatuurbeoordeling deur middel van ʼn evalueringsraamwerk, waarna dit in vraelyste wat via e-pos en LinkedIn onder SHERQ-bestuurders in Durban versprei is, uiteengesit is. Van die 62 vraelyste wat versprei is, het 42 deelnemers geantwoord. Die perspektiewe van die respondente is beoordeel deur middel van SPSS se identifisering van die belangrikste risiko’s en geleenthede. Doelwit 1 is bereik deur middel van die literatuuroorsig waarin ISO 14001-implementeringsrisiko’s en -geleenthede geïdentifiseer is. Doelwit 2 is bereik deur die evalueringsraamwerk te genereer wat implementeringsrisiko’s en -geleenthede geassimileer het. Doelwit 3 is bereik deur die antwoorde van respondente op ISO 14001:2015 implementeringsrisiko’s en -geleenthede te ontleed. Studieresultate het getoon dat, in ooreenstemming met internasionale verslae, 57,2% van alle respondente dit eens was dat die onderhoudskoste van die nakoming van die standaard hoog is en dat 76,2% van die respondente die perspektief gedeel het dat bronne van die maatskappy beter bestuur word. Respondente het meer met positiewe stellings saamgestem, wat daarop dui dat geleenthede swaarder weeg as die risiko’s. Ten spyte van die risiko’s, is daar ook vanuit ʼn bedryfsperspektief geleenthede, soos verhoogde beleggersinsette en verbeterde hulpbronbestuur. ʼn Opvolgstudie word aanbeveel om ISO 14001-implementeringsrisiko’s en geleenthede en die beleggingsimpak daarvan aan te spreek. Vanuit ʼn akademiese oogpunt het veelvuldige studies aangevoer dat die implementering van ISO 14001:2015 verbeterde finansiële uitkomste tot gevolg het, maar dat dit met hoë implementeringskoste gepaard gaan, en dit word aanbeveel dat ʼn kritieke koste-versus-wins-analise in die implementering van ISO 14001:2015 in die Durban-streek onderneem word. / Environmental Sciences / M. Assessment of industrial waste load of River Borkena and its effect on Kombolcha town and the surrounding communities

Water pollution is a major threat to human population and dumping of pollutants into water body result in rapid deterioration of water quality and affect the ecological balance in the long run. The present study was undertaken to assess pollution load from river Borkena. In urban and suburban parts of Kombolcha, the use of industrial wastewater for irrigation purpose is a common practice. Local farmers in Borkena watershed use the wastewater to irrigate their agricultural fields for cultivation of vegetables. But they suffered from loss of productivity of leafy vegetables and skin injury because of their exposure to the wastewater during irrigation practices. That is why this study focused on assessing the amount of industrial waste load on river Borkena and its effects on communities in the watershed. The main aim of this study was: to assess the physico-chemical characteristics of River Borkena before and after industrial waste discharges mixed to it by the waste carrier small streams; and its environmental impact on the surrounding communities and vegetable farms. The methodology consisted: 1) Basic survey in order to assess the physical and chemical characteristics of the river water, and 2) a case study performed by focus group discussions with the community authorities and farmers in the study area who used the river water mainly for irrigation purposes. Sampling was conducted at 6 sites in the study area during low and high flow periods with an interval of three months for a period of one year in order to account for the seasonal hydrological cycle of the river water. Laboratory measurements of river water and leafy vegetables for metal concentration were also determined to investigate the effect of the use of the river water for growing vegetables and other personal cases. The findings of this dissertation showed metal concentrations in leafy vegetables and irrigation water are within the permissible limits of FAO/WHO standards and not significant for the time being, but is expected to be a challenge in the near future if not well addressed. The concentrations of metals in leafy vegetables will provide baseline data and it shows that, in the current situation consumption of leafy vegetables grown in the study area may not have health risks in the context of metal concentrations. To avoid the entrance of metals into the food chain, municipal or industrial wastes should not be drained into the river and farmlands without prior treatment. The continuous monitoring of the soil, vegetable plant and irrigation water quality are prerequisites for the prevention of potential river water. Laboratory measurements of river water and leafy vegetables for metal concentration were also determined to investigate the effect of the use of the river water for growing vegetables and other personal cases. The findings of this dissertation showed metal concentrations in leafy vegetables and irrigation water are within the permissible limits of FAO/WHO standards and not significant for the time being, but is expected to be a challenge in the near future if not well addressed. Promoting environmentally responsible behaviour: an evaluation of the global learning and observations to benefit the environment (globe) programme.

This study aimed at determining whether participating in an environmental education programme (GLOBE) was positively reflected in participants' environmental perceptions, attitudes and level of environmentally responsible behaviour. An ecologically homogeneous sample consisting of 40 Grade 8 GLOBE participants and 40 non-GLOBE participants was selected. Pearson correlation coefficients, multiple regression analyses and t-tests were employed to compare the research groups. Results showed that GLOBE participants were more positive in their attitudes and actions toward the environment than non-GLOBE participants. GLOBE participants were however not environmentally more perceptive than non-GLOBE participants. Analysing responses of the GLOBE participants in terms of gender and place of residency was fruitless as the sample was too small to yield meaningful results. It was recommended that a more controlled and extended replication of this study, paying specific attention to initial motivations for participation/non-participation in the GLOBE programme, be considered. / Psychology / M.A.

Avaliação do impacto à saúde causado pela queima prévia de palha de cana-de-açúcar no Estado de São Paulo / Evaluation of the health impact caused by the pre-harvest burning of sugarcane straw in the State of São Paulo

O etanol de cana-de-açúcar se consolida como combustível renovável, o que promove nova expansão da cultura da cana-de-açúcar no Brasil e, principalmente, no Estado de São Paulo. Como a queima prévia controlada da palha de cana-de-açúcar ainda é considerada uma prática agrícola necessária para a viabilização econômica da colheita, em mais de 70% dos municípios do Estado de São Paulo a população é obrigada a conviver com essa poluição. Para estudar a distribuição desse fator de risco e sua relação com a saúde, realizei um estudo epidemiológico ecológico nos 645 municípios de São Paulo. Usei um modelo Bayesiano de regressão multivariada relacionando os efeitos na saúde com a exposição à queima prévia da palha de cana-de-açúcar, sendo controlados os efeitos das variações socioeconômicas (saneamento, educação e renda) e climáticas (temperatura máxima, umidade mínima e precipitação), através da inserção das mesmas no modelo. O efeito sobre a saúde foi medido por meio da Razão de Mortalidade e Morbidade Padronizada (RMP) dos desfechos: óbitos por doenças respiratórias nas faixas etárias acima de 65 anos e internações por doença respiratória, nas faixas etárias menores de 5 anos e acima de 65 anos de cada um dos municípios. Usei como medida de exposição à queima prévia dados obtidos no INPE: percentual da área de cana colhida com queima (PMQ), níveis médios de Aerossol e Focos de queima, testadas separadamente. Para resolver a autocorrelação entre os dados, estes foram considerados conforme sua disposição espacial, através da construção de uma matriz de vizinhança dos 645 municípios do Estado. Utilizei o método de simulação de Monte Carlo via Cadeias de Markov (MCMC) para \'suavizar\' as estimativas da RMP. A análise demonstrou que existe associação entre a queima prévia da palha de cana-de-açúcar e a ocorrência de doenças respiratórias, porque o aumento nos focos de queima (Focos) esteve associado significativamente com o aumento das internações por doenças respiratórias, na faixa etária de menores de cinco anos. Os resultados mostraram que a queima prévia da palha da cana-de-açúcar oferece efetivamente risco à saúde da população e, adicionados aos mapas coropléticos gerados, oferecem subsídios para a vigilância epidemiológica e contribuem para o estabelecimento de políticas públicas para controle da poluição do ar, que contemplem além dos grandes centros urbanos, os pequenos municípios. The effect on health was measured by Standardized Mortality and Morbidity Ratio (SMR) of the outcomes: deaths from respiratory diseases in the age group above 65 years old and admissions for respiratory disease in children less than 5 years old and above 65 years old of each of the municipalities. I used as a measure of exposure to the pre-harvest burning data obtained at INPE: percent of sugarcane area harvest with burning (PMQ), levels of Aerosol and Spotlights of burning, tested separately. To solve the autocorrelation in the data these were considered as their spatial arrangement, by building a neighborhood matrix of the 645 municipalities in the state. I used the Markov Chain-Monte Carlo simulation method (MCMC) to \'soften\' the estimates of the SMR. The analysis showed that there is an association between previous straw burning of sugarcane and respiratory diseases, because the increase in outbreaks of burning (Spotlights) was significantly associated with increased hospital admissions for respiratory diseases in children aged under five years old. The results show that the previous straw burning of sugarcane effectively offers health risk to the population and added to the choropleth maps generated provide valuable information for epidemiological surveillance and contribute to the establishment of public policies for the control of air pollution, which should contemplate beyond the major urban centers, the small towns. The elimination of this risk factor should be part of a primordial prevention measure to be taken in the state

Wilderness planning using the limits of acceptable change system : a case study of the overnight caves in the Mlambonja wilderness area of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.

Human-induced impacts associated with recreational use in wilderness areas have the potential to imperil the wilderness resource and the quality of visitor experiences. One approach to address this problem is the Limits of Acceptable Change System, which helps Protected-area managers determine acceptable levels of resource impacts and social conditions in wilderness areas. This study's objective was to determine the possible applicability of the Limits of Acceptable Change System to the overnight caves in the wilderness areas of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. Component A of the study discusses the ten steps of the Limits of Acceptable Change system and the management approaches for the wilderness areas and overnight caves in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. A product of Component A is a procedure manual for inventorying indicators of resource conditions in the overnight caves. During a brief period of field research this procedure manual was applied to four overnight caves in the Mlambonja Wilderness area. Component B of the study summarizes much of the information found in Component A and examines the results from the field research. Recommendations are made to improve the effectiveness of measuring the resource indicators for the overnight caves in the procedure manual. Environmental risk assessment associated with unregulated landfills in the Albert Luthuli Municipality, Mpumalanga Province, RSA

Integrated management of municipal and hazardous waste is one of the challenges facing the new municipalities in South Africa, especially those located in previously disadvantaged rural areas. However, much of the research on solid and hazardous waste management in South Africa has examined waste management problematics in urban areas, the majority of which are located within the jurisdiction of local governments which are comparatively effective in terms of providing adequate disposal services. By contrast, this study has examined the environmental risk assessment associated with unregulated landfill sites in the Albert Luthuli municipality, in the Mpumalanga province. The determination of the environmental risk was achieved by the use of questionnaire surveys and landfill analysis forms in selected study areas. The findings have highlighted a very high environmental risk, nearly four times and above, the threshold limits set by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT, 2005:15) for all of the landfill sites examined. Several exposure pathways stemming from associated environmental impacts have also been identified for the study. The higher environmental risk determined for the problem sites is ascribed to numerous factors, including their ill-planned location, the sensitivity and vulnerability of the natural environment and adjacent rural settlements, the lack of appropriate waste pre-treatment processes prior to disposal, and most significantly, the lack of regulatory and control measures to contain the myriad of environmental problems generated. Urban conservation and urban spaces in post - 1994 South Africa : a case study in KwaDukuza

The purpose of this research was to assess the condition of open spaces, community perceptions, benefits, threats and challenges faced by open spaces within KwaDukuza. The research is regarded as important within the context of threats posed by uncontrolled development to urban biodiversity. Primary and secondary documentary sources on open spaces in the study area were consulted. Data was gathered through the use of a questionnaire, with a sample of 100 respondents; observation; structured interviews with key respondents and discussions with focus groups. The research revealed a consistent pattern of threatened urban biodiversity when compared with other studies. The main finding was that the open spaces were under severe strain and threat in the area of KwaDukuza due to development. There was a noted lack of knowledge about key tools meant to safeguard the environment. Text in English / South Africa is one of the biggest producers of genetically modified crops in the world. However, recent studies in South Africa show a low public willingness to consume genetically modified crops and accept modern agricultural biotechnology. The study analysed public perception towards consuming genetically modified crops and the acceptance of modern agricultural biotechnology in South Africa. 220 participants (N = 220) were sampled from the city of Kempton Park and the Chi-square formula was used to determine how well the sample represented the population under study. Data was collected using a 7-point Likert scale questionnaire designed following the guidelines for developing a theory of planned behaviour questionnaire in Ajzen (1991, 2001). Data analyses were carried out using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The Cronbach’s alpha and Exploratory Factor Analysis were both used to determine the internal consistency and validity of the questionnaire. Correlations, independent sample t-tests, ANOVA, linear regression, and path analysis were also conducted. Findings of the study confirmed that there is low public willingness to consume genetically modified crops and to accept modern agricultural biotechnology in South Africa. / Development Studies / M.A. (Development Studies)
