Line-Managers' Perceptio of Change at Ericsson : A study of the process and effects of a re-organization

Nilsson, Elin, Axelsson, Matilda, Sörberg, Sigrid January 2008 (has links)
<p>Problem:</p><p>In order to keep up with the vast changes in the telecom industry, stay competitive and gain efficiency, Ericsson implemented a major re-organization in January 2007. The changes had large effects on the line-managers and their direct groups, proposing many critical issues regarding the implantation process and effects of the re-organization.</p><p>Purpose:</p><p>The purpose of this study was to carry out an analysis of how the implementation process of the re-organization at Ericsson was conducted. Also, how the outcomes of the new organizational design as well as the characteristics of the changes affected the line-managers.</p><p>Method:</p><p>Overall, a qualitative approach to research was chosen for this specific case-study. A total of 19 in-depth interviews were conducted with affected line-managers on four different locations and additional interviews with people in other positions were done in order to gain other perspectives of the changes. Issues of reliability, validity, objectivity and generalizability were approached in order to ensure an optimal methodology of this study.</p><p>Result:</p><p>The re-organization within Ericsson lead to a new focus in their matrix structure, moving from being product-based to competence-based. Generally, it was found that the changes were perceived differently in all four geographical sites but common for all is the confusion and mixed opinions regarding why the changes were conducted. Moreover, a strong corporate culture has lead to extremely high loyalty towards the organization.</p><p>Conclusion:</p><p>This study has led to many implications; theoretical, methodological and managerial. Some of the advice from the authors to Ericsson is to improve information and timing of change. Also, they must embrace and allow people to add input to the changes. Finally, the issue of knowledge transfer should be stressed in order to secure in-house competences.</p>

Strategy of Mobile Communication System Providers in Cloud (Implementation of cloud in telecom by Ericsson)

Sundaram, Madhu, Redjamand, Kejvan January 2012 (has links)
The telecom operators are experiencing low revenues due to reduction in voice calls and SMS in their networks mainly driven by communication services like Skype, Google talk, msn and other VOIP (voice over internet protocol) products. Instant messaging services and social networking are also taking away the operator’s customers reducing them to “dumb pipes” with the OTT (Over the Top) players like Google, Microsoft and other content providers making profits at the expense of the operator. The growth of operators’ revenue is not keeping pace with the growth of traffic in their networks creating the perception that the content providers and OTT players do not share their revenue generated using the operator’s infrastructure. The operators are therefore increasingly being reduced to act as “dumb pipes” connecting the content generated by OTT’s with the operator’s subscribers. The operator’s revenue stream in one-sided, only coming from the subscriber usually as a flat data plan. The operator’s are looking at new revenue models and the cloud computing market is a business opportunity which allows them to monetize their network resources with the possibility to earn revenue from both the subscriber and the content providers. The communication system providers who are the communication equipment vendors to the operators are indirectly affected from the shrinking operator revenue. As part of this thesis, we address how Telco’s and system vendors can differentiate in the cloud computing market against other cloud service providers and monetize the network resources which they own. We discuss the roles in the cloud value network and activities in the value chain that could be adopted and the business opportunities they could pursue. We begin by introducing the telecom operator market and the challenges faced by the industry today. The research question we are targeting is then discussed followed by the limitations of the thesis. The lecommunication industry, cloud computing technology and the relevant service delivery models are discussed. A literature review is then done to formulate our theory. Theory on strategy by Porter, Prahalad and other researchers who have contributed to the research on cloud computing are discussed. The method adopted is then proposed. Data collected is first presented and then analyzed before discussing the results of the analysis.

Development of a web-based interface for SDH

Reimann, Kalle January 2012 (has links)
Ericsson in Linköing has a test environment for testing telecommunications equipment. New equipment was recently purchased to the fiber-optic network in the test environment, but the management system for the new equipment lacked a web based interface for users without special access to the system. The purpose of this thesis is to implement such an interface. A web site based on Python and Django was built where users can search for circuits, with or without search filters, and get information about the matching circuits. The website has been live for two months and no major issues have appeared.

SMT Aided Test Case Generation For Constrained Feature Models

Borek, Paul January 2014 (has links)
With the development of highly configurable and large software, a new challenge has to be addressed, when it comes to software testing. While traditional testing approaches might still apply and succeed in achieving a better quality of service, the high degree of customizable parts of such a system implies the mentioned testing activities on different configurations. If a formal notion is used to express the allowed configurations of a system, one might think of generating such configurations in an automated fashion. However, if there are constraints involved, traditional model-based test-case generation might cause problems to achieve a desired coherency. An idea is, to use those constraints to generate test-cases and to achieve coherency at the same time. Satisfiability modulo theories (SMT) has been an emerging field in current theoretical computer science and developed decision procedures to treat various theoretical fragments in a specific manner. The goal of this thesis is, to look at a translation mechanism from an expression language for constraints into SAT modulo theories and involve this technique into a test-case generation process. Furthermore, the balance between the generation of coherent test-cases as well as the problem-specific purposes of such test-cases is investigated.

Wrestling with the Nature of Expertise: A Sport Specific Test of Ericsson, Krampe and Tesch-Römer's (1993) Theory of "Deliberate Practice"

Hodges, Nicola Jane 09 1900 (has links)
<p> Ericsson, Krampe and Tesch-Römer (1993) have concluded from work with musicians that expertise is the result of "deliberate practice". So how valid is this conclusion in sport? Four groups of wrestlers (n=42); 2 international and 2 club (current & retired) recalled the hours spent in wrestling activities since beginning wrestling. All groups had begun at a similar age (M =13.2 ± 0.6year) and had been wrestling for 10 years or more. Contrary to Ericsson et al., practice alone activities did not discriminate between the groups, only practice with others. At 6 years into their careers, the international group practised 4.5 hour/week more than the club wrestlers and at age 20 years the international wrestlers had accumulated over 1000 more hours of practice with others. Evaluations of wrestling activities showed that those judged as relevant, were also rated high for concentration and enjoyment. Diary data were collected from current wrestlers, however, no differences were found for time spent in wrestling activities. The international wrestlers spent longer travelling to practice, which reflected the necessity to train at a club with the best sparring partners. Practice with others yielded high correlations between estimates for a typical week and the diary data for the international wrestlers only, suggesting a more consistent training schedule for this group. In conclusion Ericsson et al.s' definition of "deliberate practice" needs to be reconsidered. It is suggested that "maintenance" hours should be considered separately from practice, and that future studies focus on what it is that motivates people to practice.</p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Open acess to customer product information? A case study of Ericsson Radio Base Station CPIs.

Ivanova, Vita January 2013 (has links)
Ericsson is a Swedish technology company that provides and operates telecommunication networks, television and video systems and related services in the world.A Case study of Ericsson Radio Base Station CPIs is a research work about technical informationavailability problems on Internet.According to customer product information standards, specific company’s divisions are responsible formeaningful technical information content creation and diffusion to the end user. The main research question is what information related to Ericsson RBS can be found on the Internetand what possible solutions should Ericsson offer to these groups in terms of technical informationavailability? An Internet analysis showed that on Internet appears user generated content about RBS 6000 in a wayof video instructions, manuals selling and consultation giving. This situation shows that users are interested and need information related to technical equipment, buton the other hand it is essentially illegal to spread information this way, and it might have seriousconsequences in terms of misuse or misinterpretation of information. This thesis is investigating Ericsson information sharing traditions in relation to the situation of openinformation on the Internet. Some recommendations for further work are given.

Sustainable Community Development in the Supply Chains of Swedish Multinationals located in Developing Countries: A Case Study of the CSR Strategy at IKEA &amp; Ericsson AB, using the HDI as a benchmark to measure progress.

Wadvalla, Irshaad January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is based on a case study approach investigating the impact of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies on community development in corporate supply chains that are located in developing countries. The cases chosen for the in-depth analysis are two notable Swedish multinationals, Ericsson, and IKEA. These cases were not fully comparable due to the imbalance in the available data. The study employed the Brundtland definition of sustainable development, under the broader theoretical framework of stakeholder theory. The impact of the two CSR strategies were measured against the eight variables of the Human Development Index (HDI), centred on the proposition that positive progress on these would be an enabler for accomplishing the objectives of the sustainable development goals (SDG’s). In the case of IKEA, using both semi-structured interviews and empirical data, it was premised that the partnership between IKEA and Rangsutra, as part of the CSR strategy titled, “People Planet Positive 2020” is delivering meaningful change in line with the suggested benchmark of the HDI/SDG. In the case of Ericsson, it was not possible to determine what change has been effected due to the lack of primary and secondary information, though they are helping to develop communities through certain pilot programs in association with other actors. It was further determined that there is a lack of source material available, and additional studies are required to evaluate the extent of empowerment that CSR programs in global Swedish enterprises generate in communities that are part of their supply network.

Instant Feedback Loops – for short feedback loops and early quality assurance

Mehraban, Mehrdad January 2016 (has links)
Context. In recent years, Software Quality Assurance (SQA) has become a crucial part of software development processes. Therefore, modern software development processes led to an increase in demand for manual and automated code quality assurance. Manual code quality reviews can be a time-consuming and expensive process with varying results. Thus, automated code reviews turn out to be a preferred alternative for mitigating this process. However, commercial and open-source static code analyzer tools often offer deep analysis with long lead time. Objectives. In this thesis work, the main aim is to introduce an early code quality assurance tool, which features a combination of software metrics. The tool should be able to examine code quality and complexity of a telecommunication grade software product such as source code of specific Ericsson product by Ericsson. This tool should encapsulate complexity and quality of a software product with regards to its efficiency, scope, flexibility, and execution time. Methods. For this purpose, the background section of the thesis is dedicated to in-depth research on software metrics included in well-known static code analyzers. Then, development environment, under investigation source code of Ericsson product, and collected software metric for evaluation were presented. Next, according to each software metric’s characteristics, point of interest, and requirement, a set of steps based on a Susman’s action research cycle were defined. Moreover, SWAT, a suitable software analytics toolkit, employed to extract conducted experiment data of each software metric from a static analyzer code named Lizard in order to detect most efficient software metrics. Outcome of conducted experiment demonstrates relationship of selected software metrics with one another. Results. The chosen software metrics were evaluated based on a variety of vital factors especially actual data from number of defects of specific Ericsson product. Highly effective software metrics from investigations in this thesis work were implemented as a new model named hybrid model to be utilized as an early quality assurance. Conclusions. The proposed model, which consist of well-performing software metrics, demonstrate an impressive performance as an early code quality indicator. Consequently, the utilized model in this master thesis could be studied in a future research to further investigate the effectiveness and robustness of this tool an early quality assurance.

Arbetspendling vid LM Ericsson år 1949 och 2019

Svensson, Mattias January 2019 (has links)

Minnesallokering och debugverktyg / RAM Allocation and Debugging Tools

Larsson, Johanna, Vestman, Linda January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this report is to give a description of a diploma work of 20 points that has been performed during the spring 2006 at Ericsson AB in Borås. The report accounts for the problem and procedure during the diploma work. The software used for this project was embedded in a radio link. The RAM in this radio link was divided into several regions where two were used for memory allocation. The current allocation of memory in the radio link was not optimized with regards to performance, security and memory use and the configuration used made it difficult to determine the memory use of the system and the actual memory need. Furthermore, no garbage collection existed; this resulted in fragmentation and reduction in performance arising over time. The objective of the diploma work was to optimize the allocation of memory in the radio link&apos;s software and being able to measure the processor load and memory use. The project was managed according to a work method where UML-diagrams were used and the project deliverables were defined according to a process specification from Ericsson AB. The project was time-limited and has been performed in ten weeks by two students. The project was divided up in three iterations, each iteration consisting of a number of tasks. A milestone is set after each at which the intended tasks are validated and done with. An application fulfilling these requirements was developed, using C#.NET and Visual studio 2005, and that presents its results graphically. It is applicable in development, error search and verification of the radio link&apos;s software. ANSI-C and x86-assembler were used for development and modification of the software that is being executed in the radio link. Due to secrecy policies at Ericsson AB the report has been censored and the removed sections replaced with […]. / Uppsatsnivå: C
