Preferência estética do perfil facial avaliado on-line por brasileiros /

Hahn, Luciane. January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: The present investigation seeks to determine the standards of facial profile preferred by the Brazilian population, by means of collecting opinions utilizing the world wide net computers - Internet, verifying if there are differences between the results obtained when different groups are evaluated, distributed by profession, age range, gender, degree of instruction and region of the country, besides observing if there is difference in the opinion of the consulted individuals, by the fact of having used orthodontic devices or not. With this purpose, six digital surveys were constructed, each one containing seven silhouettes, which corresponded to androgymous facial profiles, with variations in the position of the maxilla, mandible, nose, lips and chin, modifying, this way, the nasolabial and mentolabial angles, the projection of lips and chin, ranging the profile from concave to convex. The opinions of 1574 replyings were analyzed, statistically, by which made possible to define the preferred and the rejected facial profile of the consulted population, being established that the preferred silhouette presented a straight profile, and the rejected one, a facial pattern with convex profile and mandibular deficiency. When analyzed the variations in question, it was concluded that significant association between the image exists, preferred or rejected, in comparison to the variations studied (p<0,05), except for the region of the country, whose images had not presented any significant association to a determined region (p<0,05). / Doutor

Maxillary incisors step: matter of preference?

Gonzalez, Johnny 04 June 2018 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Evaluate how esthetic smiling variables influence laypeople’s preference for a step or no step between the incisal edges of the maxillary central and lateral incisors, and how subject demographics may modify such an association. METHODS: Sixteen smiling photographs with differing esthetic variable combinations were duplicated and paired. One of each pair was modified to create a 1mm step between the maxillary central and lateral incisors, while the other picture had no step. Photos were shown to 200 laypeople, and they were asked to choose which smile they prefer for each pairing. RESULTS: 99% of the subjects did not realize any difference between the photos in each pairing. 63% of the subjects surveyed in this study were college educated. For ten out of sixteen esthetic combinations, people preferred no step between central and lateral incisors. People younger than 43 years of age preferred no step for four esthetic categories. In one of the esthetic categories, males preferred a step, while females preferred no step. Caucasians and other racial backgrounds preferred no step for one esthetic combination. For two categories, people who did not attend college preferred a step, and those who did attend college preferred no step. CONCLUSIONS: More people prefer no step between maxillary central and lateral incisors, and patient background and demographics have little-to-no influence on this preference.

This study present the importance of facial profile analysis in diagnosis, treatment planning and prognostic of Orthodontic cases. Because of the subjective concepts of beauty and the number of facial types, it is difficult to select a reference pattern of facial attractiveness. Although the subjective view is important and influence decisions, other aspects of facial esthetics contribute with more objectivity in the assessments. This study focused some of these aspects: a) a sample of 120 individuals, of both genders, between 8 and 23 years old, were randomly selected in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba. c) photographies of 120 facial profiles were assessed by a panel composed by specialists and lay people, to assess the influence of subjective values in facial attractiveness. Some of the results presented: a) the measurements found with the caliper were highly influenced by the nose; b) this influence was higher in the horizontal than vertical measurements; c) a difference between gender and age was found; d) an increasement of growth pattern was found in males than in females; e) the differences between genders were more evident in older individuals of the sample. f) the male profiles were more convex than the female profiles; g) the concordance intra and inter examiner were not high; h) maxillae and mandibular aspects were easily assessed; j) aspects of facial and dentoalveolar height were most difficult to assess; k) the facial caliper was coherent with the functional purpose.

. / The objective of the present study was to evaluate the perception degree of the smile attractiveness due to the following factors: variations of beauty patterns, knowledge of the examiners and photographic framing. Digital alterations were made in facial photographs of 2 individuals of both sexes in order to fit them into the esthetical patterns established by the literature. After the alterations, the photographs focused the mouth so as the smiles could also be evaluated in this framing. For each framing, eleven smiles were created: one of the control ideal smile (I) (ideal smile according to the patterns considered) and 10 individual variations of each one of the patterns considered, as follows: 1) midline deviation - 2mm (LM2) and 3 mm (LM3); 2) Smile line - straight smile line (LSR) and inverted smile line (LSRV); 3) Lateral incisors angulation - 10º towards mesial (A10m) and 10º towards distal (A10d); 4) Diastema: 0.5mm and 1mm and 5) Dental proportion - Alber's proportion and Plato's proportion, totaling 44 photographs, which were individually evaluated by 4 examiners, 2 specialists in operative dentistry and 2 laypeople, using the analogical visual scale (VAS), in 2 sessions of analysis. Differences could be observed between the evaluations made by dentists and laypeople. The smile attractiveness has changed for some photographs when they were evaluated in the different framing alterations. It was possible to observe that the control ideal smile of both sexes and different evaluation ambits showed a more intense attractiveness than the smiles with variations of the esthetical patterns. Large diastemas and also straight or inverted smile lines were the conditions which strongly harmed the smile attractiveness. The three mathematical proportions (Alber's, Plato's and The Golden Proportion) determined high levels of... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below).

ESTHETIC PREFERENCES OF MAXILLARY INCISOR LABIOLINGUAL INCLINATION ACROSS RACES

Barcoma, Elvi M 01 January 2015 (has links)
Abstract ESTHETIC PREFERENCES FOR MAXILLARY INCISOR LABIOLINGUAL INCLINATION ACROSS RACES by Elvi Marie Barcoma, D.D.S. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University Virginia Commonwealth University, 2015 Major Director: Bhavna Shroff, D.M.D., M.Dent.Sc, Program Director, Orthodontics Objective: To determine if people of different racial backgrounds prefer different amounts of maxillary incisor labiolingual inclination from a smiling profile view. Materials and Methods: An electronic survey was created with smiling profile images of an African-American female and a White female with varying degrees of maxillary incisor labiolingual inclination. Images were ranked from most attractive to least attractive. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the overall preference for maxillary incisor labiolingual inclination between African-American and White evaluators or between genders. The estimated optimal incisal inclination across races was -8.1°. Conclusions: There was no clinically significant difference in the estimated optimal inclination across races or between genders. The average of the top three maxillary incisor inclinations ranged between -10° and -5°. The majority of evaluators preferred retroclined maxillary incisors over proclined maxillary incisors.
