Search for Universal Extra Dimensions in the Two Photon and Missing Transverse Energy Final State with the ATLAS Detector

Fatholahzadeh, Baharak 11 December 2012 (has links)
A search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy is conducted using 3.1 pb^{-1} of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions at center of mass energy \sqrt{s}=7 TeV. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider during the period from March 30, 2010 until August 30, 2010. No excess of such events is observed above the Standard Model background prediction. This result is interpreted in the context of a gravity mediated One Universal Extra Dimension model with \Lambda R=20, N=6 and M_{D}=5 TeV, where \Lambda is the cutoff scale, N is the number of large extra dimensions and M_{D} is the Planck scale in the higher dimensional theory. The compactification radius of the Universal Extra Dimension, R, is excluded for values of 1/R < 728 GeV at 95\% CL, providing the most stringent limit on this model at the time of publication.

Higgs Formation At The Black Hole Decays At Large Hadron Collider

Sekmen, Sezen 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines the possible creation of (4+n)-dimensional black holes at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, consequent decays of such black holes via Hawking radiation and probable formation of Higgs boson among black hole decay products. Firstly, a theoretical background was presented including black hole physics, Hawking radiation, large extra dimensions, brane-bulk models, 4+n black holes and Higgs mechanism. Then, a simulation modeling black hole formation and decay including 130 GeV Higgs as a decay product at LHC interfaced with a detector simulation of Compact Muon Selenoid (CMS) was analysed focusing especially on the Higgs decay channels and properties of Hawking radiation. Both theoretical assumptions and simulation analysis point out that black hole production and the signatures of black hole decay products could carry crucial information on dimensionality and structure of spacetime Furthermore there is a significant possibility to observe 130 GeV Higgs boson especially in the Black Hole -&gt / H -&gt / jj and Black Hole -&gt / H &amp / #8211 / &gt / WW/ZZ -&gt / lnln decay channels.

Towards feeder-free and serum-free growth of cells

Richards, Sean Dennis January 2007 (has links)
The in-vitro culture of human embryonic stem and keratinocyte cells has great potential to revolutionise the therapeutics industry. Indeed it is hoped that these cells will provide a superior alternative to current tissue and organ transplantation. However, both of these cell types require animal and/or donor products for their successful maintenance in-vitro. This requirement results in a significant risk of cross contamination from the animal or donor products to either the primary keratinocyte or hES cells. These potentially transplantable cells therefore need to be cultured in an environment free from animal or donor products to remove the risk of contamination to the patient. The ideal growth conditions must comprise of two attributes; firstly they must be free from animal or donor products, and secondly the culture system must be fully defined. Recently, it was discovered that an extra-cellular matrix protein, vitronectin, could be used in conjunction with growth factors and growth factor-binding proteins (VN:GF combination), to promote enhanced cell migration and growth through the co-activation of integrin and growth factor receptors. Given that growth factors and serum are clearly important in supporting the in-vitro cultivation of mammalian cells, and that vitronectin is an abundant protein in serum, I hypothesised that these VN:GF combinations could be translated into a serum-free medium that would support the serial propagation and self renewal of primary keratinocytes and hES cells. As reported in this thesis I have developed a defined, serum-free media for the culture of these cells that incorporates the VN:GF combinations. While the two media differ slightly in their compositions, both support the serial, undifferentiated expansion of their respective cells types. Together, this represents a significant advance that will ultimately facilitate the therapeutic use of these cells. However, the in-vitro expansion of these cells in these new media still required the presence of a feeder cell layer. In view of this I aimed to explore the in-vitro micro-environment of primary keratinocytes using a novel proteomic approach in an attempt to find candidate factors that could be used in conjunction with the VN:GF media to replace both serum and the feeder cells. The proteomic approach adopted examined the secretion of proteins into the defined, minimal protein content VN:GF media when the feeder cells were cultured alone, as well as in co-culture with primary keratinocytes. This strategy allowed assessment of proteins/factors that are secreted in response to both autocrine and paracrine cellular interactions and revealed a number of candidate factors that warrant further investigation. Ultimately this proteomic information and the associated new insights into the keratinocyte in-vitro culture microenvironment may lead to the development of a culture system for these cells that is not reliant on either a feeder cell layer or serum for their successful propagation. Moreover, it is likely that this will also be relevant to the feeder cell-free propagation of hES cells. This has obvious advantages for the culture of primary keratinocytes and hES cells in that it will allow a safe defined culture system for the undifferentiated propagation of these cells. This will facilitate the generation of cells and tissues free from xenogeneic and allogeneic contaminants, thus ensuring any therapeutics developed from these cell types are approved for therapeutic applications and importantly, will minimise risks to patients.

Gay men talk about the place of extra-relational sex in their committed relationships: orientations to the therapeutic terrain

Andrews, Paul John, Social Sciences & International Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2010 (has links)
Male couples place the issue of extra??relational sex (ERS) in their committed relationships at various points on a continuum between monogamy and non??monogamy. Further, many couples move about on this continuum over the course of the relationship, according to their changing wishes and desires. Making the right choice or transitioning from one relationship style to another is not always straightforward and unproblematic. Some male couples may benefit from therapeutic support at these crucial times. This research seeks to contribute to knowledge that could inform sensitive and respectful practice on the part of therapists and others who work with the relational concerns of gay men. Using qualitative methodology the research questions explored how gay men negotiate the place of ERS with their partners, the strategies they use to manage ERS, and their beliefs about the effects of their choices on themselves and their relationship. A purposive sample of 24 Sydney gay men (six single and 18 partnered) aged between 22 and 68 participated in the research. Data were collected through semi??structured interviews and subjected to thematic analysis. Despite diverse experiences of ERS, a core set of processes appeared central to relationship satisfaction and function. The knowledge produced by this research provides a number of ways for therapists to orient themselves to the therapeutic terrain of work with gay men and ERS while remaining alive to the unique and particular characteristics of the male couple relationship before them.

Lärares extra anpassningar i Hem- och konsumentkunskap för elever med neuropsykriatisk funktionsnedsättning / Techers´extra adoptions in Home and consumer studies for pupils with neuropsychiatric disability

Enqvist, Ulla, Frost, Jennie January 2022 (has links)
Background By law, extra adaptions must be made for students who are at risk of not achieving the knowledge requirements within the framework of regular teaching. Students with neuropsychiatric disabilities may have learning difficulties as well as social and emotional difficulties, which can make it more difficult in groupwork. As a result, they often need extra adaption. Lack of extra adaptions can increase student absenteeism. There are framework factors that can affect the implementation of the teaching and thus the students´ results. Objective The purpose of the study is to identify and describe how teachers make extra adaptions in the learning environment for the practical parts of Home and Consumer studies for students who have neuropsychiatric disability such as ADD, ADHD and ASD. Method In the study, nine semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with certified teachers in Home and Consumer studies at seven schools in five municipalities in different parts of the country. In the processing of the material, qualitative content analysis was used. Results The teachers showed great commitment and described various extra adaptations for students with neuropsychiatric disability that were applied. Some extra adaptions that were mentioned were, for example customed group compositions and placement in the room. Lack of knowledge about neuropsychiatric disability, difficulties with group compositions due to large groups of students as well as other framework factors such as lesson time affected the possibilities of making extra adaptions for students with neuropsychiatric disability. Conclusion The teachers request education on neuropsychiatric disability and how extra adaptions can be designed, but the study shows that the teachers nevertheless make many extra adaptions within the framework of the regular teaching. However, there were conflicts between framework factors and the intentions of the teachers to design these extra adaptions which means that the school isn´t equivalent.

Translating Aristotelian Lexis in Euripides's Electra

Huffam, Ian 22 November 2018 (has links)
In Poetics, Aristotle defines lexis as being the “language” of tragedy, and this language is one of the elements of tragedy that creates the mimetic representation. As Aristotle literally describes of the words of tragic composition as “doing” something, I consider lexis as an equivalent to J.L. Austin’s locutionary function of language, and the creation of the mimetic representation as the illocutionary. Aristotle’s conception of tragic composition requires a rigid understanding of the tragic form and its proper deployment as he leaves no room for perlocution, and so I also employ Jan Mukařovský’s theory of intentionality/unintentionality in art to explain how a play such as Euripides’s Electra may be understood as a product of the literary culture in which it arose. I then review historical trends of translating Greek tragedy into English to establish how modern translation is moving further away from reverence to the lexis of tragedy. Finally I address the various sections of Electra, a play with an almost non-existent performance record in English, to establish how I may respect the original lexis in my own translation, thereby imparting a (hopefully) similar effect on a modern audience.

Santana, Agatha Ribeiro. January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research identifies the conceptions of the teachers who visited the Observatório Didático de Astronomia "Lionel José Andriatto", Unesp - Bauru, with their students. Their impression about their visitation in non-formal spaces of teaching are analyzed in the light of teaching knowledge, seeking subsidies for a possible structuring of a future program directed in the continuous training of teachers. The concern with the theme is justified by the demerit in which non-formal spaces have been used, without the proper exploitation of all its potentialities for teaching and poor integration of these spaces with the classroom. As the Observatory under study was a non-formal space much sought out by teachers, it raised questions about how it would be used for teaching astronomy. The qualitative study is guided by a bibliographical survey of the area of Astronomy Education in non-formal spaces and the analysis of interviews of visiting professors. The conceptions of these teachers about the school visits were interpreted following the principles of the Content Analysis, whose results point to a concept of a school visit as a limited extracurricular activity and restricted to the day of the visit, besides highlighting some difficulties in the teaching of astronomy. The results also reveal that these spaces are not used in the initial and continued formation of teachers nor is there an approach of implementing theoretical-methodological foundations aimed for this objective. / Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Odontologia, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2014. / ABSTRACT Extracted human teeth are used in many laboratory and preclinical courses. While there has been no report of disease transmission with extracted teeth, desinfection/sterilization should be a concern. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of sodium fluoride to 2% like a new disinfection/sterilization method of extracted human teeth using E. faecalis. In this study, 56 extracted molars without carious lesions were collected and inoculated with E. faecalis. Teeth were divided into four groups for disinfection/sterilization: Group I (GI): saline solution; GII: autoclaving; GIII: sodium fluoride to 2% for 1 week; GIV: sodium fluoride to 2% for 2 weeks. Each tooth was then placed in an individual test tube with growth medium. Samples were examined for evidence of growth (turbity) and absorbance values. All experimental groups promoted reduction of E. faecalis and a statistically significant difference was observed between groups ( test t for independet samples) with p<0,05. Only GII, method autoclaving for 30 minutes at 121? C and 15 psi was effective in preventing growth. However, GIV showed better results than GIII, 1,00 (?0,02) vs 0,89 (?0,09), respectively. These results suggest that the solution of sodium fluoride to 2% can be a new method for disinfecting because of the ability to destroy and reduce the amount of microorganism E. faecalis.

Teixeira, Lúcia Helena Pereira January 2005 (has links)
