Supersymmetric F-Theory Gut Models

Chung, Yu-Chieh 2011 May 1900 (has links)
F-theory is a twelve-dimensional geometric version of string theory and is believed to be a natural framework for GUT model building. The aim of this dissertation is to study how gauge theories realized by F-theory can accommodate GUT models. In this dissertation, we focus on local and semi-local GUT model building in F-theory. For local GUT models, we build SU(5) GUTs by using abelian U(1) fluxes via the SU(6) gauge group. Doing so, we obtain non-minimal spectra of the MSSM with doublet-triplet splitting by switching on abelian U(1)2 fluxes. We also classify all supersymmetric U(1)2 fluxes by requiring an exotic-free bulk spectrum. For semi-local GUT models, we start with an E8 singularity and obtain lower rank gauge groups by unfolding the singularity governed by spectral covers. In this framework, the spectra can be calculated by the intersection numbers of spectral covers and matter curves. In particular, we use SU(4) spectral covers and abelian U(1)X fluxes to build flipped SU(5) models. We show that three-generation spectra of flipped SU(5) models can be achieved by turning on suitable fluxes. To construct E6 GUTs, we consider SU(3) spectral covers breaking E8 down to E6. Also three-generation extended MSSM can be obtained by using non-abelian SU(2) × U(1)2 fluxes.

A Study on Heterotic Target Space Duality – Bundle Stability/Holomorphy, F-theory and LG Spectra

Feng, He 26 August 2019 (has links)
In the context of (0, 2) gauged linear sigma models, we explore chains of perturbatively dual heterotic string compactifications. The notion of target space duality (TSD) originates in non-geometric phases and can be used to generate distinct GLSMs with shared geometric phases leading to apparently identical target space theories. To date, this duality has largely been studied at the level of counting states in the effective theories. We extend this analysis in several ways. First, we consider the correspondence including the effective potential and loci of enhanced symmetry in dual theories. By engineering vector bundles with non-trivial constraints arising from slope-stability (i.e. D-terms) and holomorphy (i.e. F-terms) the detailed structure of the vacuum space of the dual theories can be explored. Our results give new evidence that GLSM target space duality may provide important hints towards a more complete understanding of (0,2) string dualities. In addition, we consider TSD theories on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this context, each half of the "dual" heterotic theories must in turn have an F-theory dual. Moreover, the apparent relationship between two heterotic compactifications seen in (0,2) heterotic target space dual pairs should, in principle, induce some putative correspondence between the dual F-theory geometries. It has previously been conjectured in the literature that (0,2) target space duality might manifest in F-theory as multiple K3- fibrations of the same elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifold. In this work we investigate this conjecture in the context of both six-dimensional and four-dimensional effective theories and demonstrate that in general, (0,2) target space duality cannot be explained by such a simple phenomenon alone. Finally, we consider Landau-Ginzburg (LG) phases of TSD theories and explore their massless spectrum. In particular, we investigate TSD pairs involving geometric singularities. We study resolutions of these singularities and their relationship to the duality. / Doctor of Philosophy / In string theory, the space-time has “hidden” dimensions beyond the three spatial and one time-like dimensions macroscopically seen in our universe. We want to study how the geometries of this “internal space” can affect observable physics, and which geometries are compatible with our universe. Target space duality is a relationship that connects two or more geometries together. In target space duality, gauged linear sigma models (related to string theories) share a common locus (called a Landau-Ginzburg phase) in their parameter space, but are distinct theories. To date, this duality has largely been studied at the level of counting states in the effective theories. In this dissertation, target space duality is studied in more depth. First we extend the analysis to the effective potential and loci of enhanced symmetry. By engineering examples with non-trivial constraints, the detailed structure of the vacuum space of the dual theories can be explored. Our results give new evidence that target space duality may provide important hints towards a more complete understanding of string dualities. We also investigate the conjecture that target space duality might manifest in F-theory, a higher dimensional string theory, as multiple fibrations of the same manifold. We demonstrate that in general, target space duality cannot be explained by such a simple phenomenon alone. In our cases, we provide evidence that non-geometric data in F-theory must play at least some role in the induced F-theory correspondence, while leaving the full determination of the putative new F-theory duality to future work. Finally we explore the complete massless spectrum of the Landau-Ginzburg (LG) phase. Specifically, we calculate the full LG spectra for both sides, and compare the theory with the geometric phases. We find examples in which half of the target space dual geometry is singular. We have probed some approaches to resolving the singularity.

Extending the Geometric Tools of Heterotic String Compactification and Dualities

Karkheiran, Mohsen 15 June 2020 (has links)
In this work, we extend the well-known spectral cover construction first developed by Friedman, Morgan, and Witten to describe more general vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau geometries. In particular, we consider the case in which the Calabi-Yau fibration is not in Weierstrass form but can rather contain fibral divisors or multiple sections (i.e., a higher rank Mordell-Weil group). In these cases, general vector bundles defined over such Calabi-Yau manifolds cannot be described by ordinary spectral data. To accomplish this, we employ well-established tools from the mathematics literature of Fourier-Mukai functors. We also generalize existing tools for explicitly computing Fourier-Mukai transforms of stable bundles on elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds. As an example of these new tools, we produce novel examples of chirality changing small instanton transitions. Next, we provide a geometric formalism that can substantially increase the understood regimes of heterotic/F-theory duality. We consider heterotic target space dual (0,2) GLSMs on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this context, each half of the ``dual" heterotic theories must, in turn, have an F-theory dual. In all cases, we provide evidence that non-geometric data in F-theory must play at least some role in the induced F-theory correspondence while leaving the full determination of the putative new F-theory duality to the future work. Finally, we consider F-theory over elliptically fibered manifolds, with a general conic base. Such manifolds are quite standard in F-theory sense, but our goal is to explore the extent of the heterotic/F-theory duality over such manifolds. Such manifolds are quite standard in F-theory sense, but our goal is to explore the extent of the heterotic/F-theory duality over such manifolds. / Doctor of Philosophy / String theory is the only physical theory that can lead to self-consistent, effective quantum gravity theories. However, quantum mechanics restricts the dimension of the effective spacetime to ten (and eleven) dimensions. Hence, to study the consequences of string theory in four dimensions, one needs to assume the extra six dimensions are curled into small compact dimensions. Upon this ``compactification," it has been shown (mainly in the 1990s) that different classes of string theories can have equivalent four-dimensional physics. Such classes are called dual. The advantage of these dualities is that often they can map perturbative and non-perturbative limits of these theories. The goal of this dissertation is to explore and extend the geometric limitations of the duality between heterotic string theory and F-theory. One of the main tools in this particular duality is the Fourier-Mukai transformation. In particular, we consider Fourier-Mukai transformations over non-standard geometries. As an application, we study the F-theory dual of a heterotic/heterotic duality known as target space duality. As another side application, we derive new types of small instanton transitions in heterotic strings. In the end, we consider F-theory compactified over particular manifolds that if we consider them as a geometry dual to a heterotic string, can lead to unexpected consequences.

String Phenomenology in the Era of LHC

Maxin, James A. 2010 August 1900 (has links)
The low-energy supersymmetry phenomenology for specific classes of string compactifications is investigated given that the low-energy physics may provide a clue as to the structure of the fundamental theory at high energy scales. The one-parameter model (OPM), a highly constrained subset of minimal Supergravity where all the soft-supersymmetry breaking terms may be fixed in terms of the gaugino mass, is studied, in addition to a three-family Pati-Salam model constructed from intersecting D6-branes. Furthermore, the phenomenology of gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking F-theory SU(5) and SO(10) models, as well as F-SU(5) models with vector- like particles, are examined. We determine the viable parameter space that satisfies all the latest experimental constraints, including the most recent WMAP relic neutralino abundance observations, and find it to be consistent with the CDMS II and other concurrent direct-detection experiments. Moreover, we compute the gamma-ray flux and cross-sections of neutralino annihilations into gamma-rays and compare to the published Fermi-LAT satellite telescope measurements. In F-theory SU(5) and SO(10) models, we predict the exact small deviation of the gaugino mass relation at two-loop level near the electroweak scale, which can be tested at the colliders. More- over, in F-SU(5), we predict the precise deviations from the mSUGRA gaugino mass relations due to the presence of the vector-like particles, also testable at the colliders. The compilation of all these results form a comprehensive collection of predictions with which to evaluate these string models alongside anticipated experimental dis- coveries in the coming decade.

N=1 Heterotic / F-Theory Duality

Andreas, Björn 17 August 1998 (has links)
We discuss aspects of N = 1 duality between the heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold with a vector bundle and F-theory on a Calabi-Yau fourfold. After a description of string duality intended for the non-specialist the framework and the constraints for heterotic/F-theory compactifications are presented. The computations of the necessary Calabi-Yau manifold and vector bundle data, involving characteristic classes and bundle moduli, are given in detail. The eight- and six- dimensional dualities are reviewed. The matching of the spectrum of chiral multiplets and of the number of heterotic five-branes respectively F-theory three-branes, needed for anomaly cancellation in four-dimensional vacua, is pointed out. Several examples of four-dimensional dual pairs are constructed where on both sides the geometry of the involved manifolds relies on del Pezzo surfaces.

F-theory on six-dimensional symmetric toroidal orbifolds / F-Theorie auf sechs dimensionalen symmetrischen toroidalen Orbifaltigkeiten

Kohl, Finn Bjarne January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, compactifications of F-theory on six dimensional symmetric toroidalorbifolds are explored. These orbifold geometries have been mathematically classified and it is natural to ask what the physical implications of string theorycompactifications on those geometries are. Since compactifications of string theory to six dimensions describe a sweet spot in terms of developed methods andrich model-building possibilities, it is interesting to investigate the landscape ofthese theories opposed to the swampland of only apparently consistent quantumtheories of gravity. Additionally, superconformal field theories can exist in at mostsix dimensions. These emerge naturally in the considered F-theory constructions. The present work explores effects of compactifications on such orbifolds buildingon the work of [arXiv:1905.00116v1 [hep-th]]. It constitutes a step towards extendingthe geometric classification of these orbifolds to a classification of the physical models. Beyond [arXiv:1905.00116v1 [hep-th]], roto-translations have severe effects on thegeometry and thus the field theory and the spectrum. These effects are discussedin this thesis and include, amongst others, twisted affine folding of gauge groups, the emergence of superconformal points away from intersecting branes as well assuperconformal sectors related to the multiple fibre. / <p>This thesis was conducted under the regulations of Heidelberg University under the joint supervision of Professor Luca Amendola (University of Heidelberg) and Assistant Professor Magdalena Larfors (Uppsala University) during a one-year ERASMUS-exchange.</p>

Field Theoretic Lagrangian From Off-shell Supermultiplet Gauge Quotients

Katona, Gregory 01 January 2013 (has links)
Recent efforts to classify off-shell representations of supersymmetry without a central charge have focused upon directed, supermultiplet graphs of hypercubic topology known as Adinkras. These encodings of Super Poincare algebras, depict every generator of a chosen supersymmetry as a node-pair transformtion between fermionic bosonic component fields. This research thesis is a culmination of investigating novel diagrammatic sums of gauge-quotients by supersymmetric images of other Adinkras, and the correlated building of field theoretic worldline Lagrangians to accommodate both classical and quantum venues. We find Ref [40], that such gauge quotients do not yield other stand alone or "proper" Adinkras as afore sighted, nor can they be decomposed into supermultiplet sums, but are rather a connected "Adinkraic network". Their iteration, analogous to Weyl's construction for producing all finite-dimensional unitary representations in Lie algebras, sets off chains of algebraic paradigms in discrete-graph and continuous-field variables, the links of which feature distinct, supersymmetric Lagrangian templates. Collectively, these Adiankraic series air new symbolic genera for equation to phase moments in Feynman path integrals. Guided in this light, we proceed by constructing Lagrangians actions for the N = 3 supermultiplet YI /(iDI X) for I = 1, 2, 3, where YI and X are standard, Salam-Strathdee superfields: YI fermionic and X bosonic. The system, bilinear in the component fields exhibits a total of thirteen free parameters, seven of which specify Zeeman-like coupling to external background (magnetic) fluxes. All but special subsets of this parameter space describe aperiodic oscillatory responses, some of which are found to be surprisingly controlled by the golden ratio, [phi] = 1.61803, Ref [52]. It is further determined that these Lagrangians allow an N = 3 - > 4 supersymmetric extension to the Chiral-Chiral and Chiral-twistedChiral multiplet, while a subset admits two inequivalent such extensions. In a natural proiii gression, a continuum of observably and usefully inequivalent, finite-dimensional off-shell representations of worldline N = 4 extended supersymmetry are explored, that are variate from one another but in the value of a tuning parameter, Ref [53]. Their dynamics turns out to be nontrivial already when restricting to just bilinear Lagrangians. In particular, we find a 34-parameter family of bilinear Lagrangians that couple two differently tuned supermultiplets to each other and to external magnetic fluxes, where the explicit parameter dependence is unremovable by any field redefinition and is therefore observable. This offers the evaluation of X-phase sensitive, off-shell path integrals with promising correlations to group product decompositions and to deriving source emergences of higher-order background flux-forms on 2-dimensional manifolds, the stacks of which comprise space-time volumes. Application to nonlinear sigma models would naturally follow, having potential use in M- and F- string theories.
