Aprecision measurement of the proton structure function F 2 with the H1 experiment

Kretzschmar, Jan 11 April 2008 (has links)
The H1 detector at the HERA collider is a complex device to study the interactions of electrons and protons at a centre of mass energy of 320 GeV. One of the main goals is to determine the sub structure of the proton with the best possible precision by measuring the inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering cross section as a function of the kinematic variables Q2 and x. This work presents a new measurement of the inclusive Deep Inelastic $ep$ Scattering cross section using the data taken with the H1 experiment in the year 2000. The measurement is restricted to the region of low and intermediate inelasticities y. In this domain the reduced cross section is mostly identical to the proton structure function F2. About one order of magnitude in the photon virtuality, 10 < Q2 < 180 GeV2, and three orders of magnitude in the Bjorken scaling variable, 0.00013 < x < 0.15, are covered. The accuracy in this range is limited by systematic uncertainties. Compared to the published results using the data from the years 1996/97, these uncertainties are reduced by a significant amount and a self consistent measurement is presented. The errors of the new measurement are typically in the range of 1.3 - 2.0%, which means a 30% improvement over the previously published results. None of the considered systematic error sources dominates the total uncertainty in the bulk of the measurement. An unexpected but nevertheless very important result is the observed discrepancy of the measurement to the previously published H1 results. A new analysis of the older data shows, that the data sets themselves are not responsible for this. It is also found, that assumptions made for the simulated event sample were wrong and therefore the published cross section measurement is biased by up to 3%. An approximate correction of the published data leads to a reasonable agreement of the old and the new measurement within their respective uncertainties.

Produção de colostro e desempenho da leitegada em fêmeas suínas multíparas submetidas à indução em parto / Colostrum production and litter performance of sows multiparous submitted to farrowing induction

Otto, Mateus Anderson January 2014 (has links)
Low colostrum intake influences piglet survival and performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate colostrum production by sows submitted to farrowing induction and its influence on pre-weaning survival rate and piglet performance. A total of 96 sows of parities three to seven were assigned into two groups: Control (n = 48) composed of sows with spontaneous labor and Induced (n = 48) composed of sows induced on day 114 with PGF2α analogue. Colostrum production was estimated by piglet individual weight gain in the first day of life, which was measured by weighing piglets at birth and 24 hours later. Blood samples were collected from piglets on the first day after birth. Colostrum and blood samples were collected from each sow at farrowing and 24 hours later. To evaluate piglet performance during lactation 28 litters from each group containing 12 piglets each were followed for 20 days after birth. During lactation period, all piglets were weighed on days 07, 14 and 20 after birth. Gestation length of control group was about 12 hours longer than induced group (P = 0.06). Farrowing duration, total born, born alive, stillborn rate, average piglet weight, average litter weight at birth and colostrum production were not significantly affected (P > 0.10) by induction of farrowing compared to control group. There was no difference (P > 0.05) in the percentage of sows with obstetric intervention between groups. IgG concentration in sow and piglet serum and colostrum were similar (P > 0.10) between groups. To monitor piglet performance during lactation litters with similar initial weight and colostrum intake (P > 0.10) were cross-fostered in sows with similar colostrum production (P > 0.10). No differences (P > 0.10) were observed in the average piglet and litter weight on days 07, 14 and 20, and on survival rate in the same period. Induction of labor at 114 days of gestation doesn’t affect colostrum production nor influence colostrum and piglet serum immunoglobulin G level. Litter performance during lactation was similar in sows with induced parturition and spontaneous labor.

The beans protein content can be improved by breeding programs since the existence of genetic variability for this character can be explored. It is important to have the relative efficiency of the available methods evaluated. The objective of this research was to evaluate the genetic potential for protein content of segregant populations of common beans submitted to different breeding methods and evaluate the potential of the populations of the bulk method inside F2 families for the traits yield and flowering. The parental utilized in this study was from the bean group carioca , CNFC 7812 with 23% of total protein content and CNFC 8056 with 23% of total protein content. Starting with the F1 generation, was obtained the segregant population F2, witch were selected 150 plants wich families was utilized to produce the populations by three methods: Bulk, Bulk within of F2 and SSD method until the F5 generation. The average protein content of the families obtained by this cross was 16,58% for the method SSD, 20,37% for the method Bulk e 20,44% for the Bulk F2:5. Based on the results, it could be concluded that the best method for protein content was the Bulk method, on account of its easiness and its generation of a larger number of families superior than the best parental and the average of the genitors. Among the evaluated families there is enough genetic variability to be explored for the characters protein, grain yield and flowering.

Studies on influenza A virus PB1-F2 protein

Vater, Sandra January 2011 (has links)
The influenza A virus genome codes for up to 12 proteins. Segment 2 encodes three proteins, the polymerase subunit PB1, a small protein PB1-F2 and an N-terminally truncated version of PB1 called N40. Different functions have been reported for PB1-F2 such as induction of apoptosis, regulation of the viral polymerase activity, enhancement of secondary bacterial infections and modulation of the innate immune system. So far, no function has been ascribed to N40. To study PB1-F2 in more detail, its coding sequence was deleted from its original position and inserted downstream of the PB1 (segment 2), NA (segment 6) or M (segment 7) open reading frames (ORF) employing different strategies, including the use of an overlapping Stop-Start cassette, a duplicated promoter sequence and the self-cleaving 2A peptide derived from foot-and-mouth disease virus. Viruses with bicistronic segments were rescued and tested for their ability to express PB1-F2. Whereas no expression of PB1-F2 was detected from bicistronic segments 2 and 7, expression of PB1-F2 from segment 6 was observed in high levels. However, the phenotype of all these viruses was similar to that of viruses lacking PB1-F2 which made mutational analysis of PB1-F2 not worthwhile. Previously, the function of PB1-F2 was mainly studied using a virus deficient in PB1-F2 production but showing increased N40 expression. In the present study, recombinant WSN viruses lacking either PB1-F2 or N40, or both proteins were engineered and the effects of these mutations on the viral life cycle were examined. Viruses deficient for PB1-F2 that overexpressed N40 showed the most attenuated phenotype, whereas the loss of PB1-F2 alone did not obviously affect virus replication. Reduced viral polymerase activity was observed for viruses lacking N40, however attenuation in vivo was only seen in combination with the loss of PB1-F2. Neither the loss of PB1-F2 nor N40 alone had a great impact, but changes in the expression level of both proteins were disadvantageous for the virus. Increased levels of N40 shifted the polymerase activity towards replication, suggesting a new function for N40. Thus, it was shown that the segment 2 gene products and their expression level influence viral replication and pathogenicity, and a careful design of mutant recombinant viruses is vital for determining the experimental outcome.

Are Cardiovascular Disease Inflammatory Markers Elevated in Those with Nonspecific Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain Compared to Nonpain Case Controls?

Tolley, Jeffrey Ray 01 April 2017 (has links)
CONTEXT: Recent studies have considered the role of inflammation in the development of both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and musculoskeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Studies suggest that inflammation plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular disease. In conditions of chronic pain, as with rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation has also been noted through elevated levels of inflammatory markers. There are currently no studies that examine the possible connection between inflammatory markers related to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and nonspecific chronic musculoskeletal pain (NCMP). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether urinary levels of microalbumin (MA) and F2-isoprostanes (F2-isoPs), inflammatory biomarkers associated with increased CVD risk, are elevated in persons with NCMP compared to nonpain case controls. NCMP refers to pain present for more than 3 days per week and for more than 12 weeks. This type of pain is not due to injury but is associated with interference of normal function. DESIGN: Nonrandomized observational study. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 120 participants (60 pain subjects, 60 nonpain case-controls). A single first-morning void urine sample was collected from each subject. Urine specific gravity and total volume were measured and then a sample was sent to a lab for analysis of MA and F2-isoPs. Inflammatory biomarker levels in the pain and nonpain groups were compared. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in F2-isoPs levels between the chronic pain group (0.65ng/mg ± 0.05) and the nonpain group (0.80ng/mg ± 0.07) (95% CI (-0.32, 0.03)). However, MA levels were significantly higher in the chronic pain group (2.41mg/g ± 0.24) compared to the nonpain group (1.88mg/g ± 0.14) (95% CI (0.34, 1.68)). MACR levels were also significantly higher in the chronic pain group (2.07mg/g ± 0.31) compared to the nonpain group (1.14mg/g ± 0.14) (95% CI (0.32, 1.64)). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest a possible link between at least one inflammatory marker (microalbumin) and NCMP. This in turn allows for a limited but reasonable inference that NCMP may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, mediated through the MA inflammatory biomarker. Further research is needed to more fully understand the possible connection between NCMP and CVD.

Eastern European Integration and Tax Competition

Rabitsch, Katrin January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The member countries of the enlarged European Union show large differences in the structure of their tax systems. While consumption taxes have been largely harmonized over the past decades, differences remain in taxes on factor incomes, in particular on capital income. Also, effective tax rates on capital income in Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) have been falling substantially over the last decade- a trend that may suggest that some tax competition has taken place in the enlarged European Union. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, it presents and contrasts effective tax rates of Western European countries with those of the CEEC. Second, from a theoretical aspect, it presents a model framework within which a quantitative macroeconomic analysis of tax competition between the two regions can be conducted. In addition the model suggests that part of the large real exchange rate appreciation and current account deficits that CEE countries have experienced during the last decade might be attributed to effects from tax competition. Multinational enterprises and their domestic counterparts. Past research, current issues and future directions.

Bellak, Christian January 2001 (has links) (PDF)
This paper reviews and summarises the results of selected empirical studies on performance gaps between multinational enterprises and their domestic counterparts. Performance gaps arise in such fields as productivity, profitability, wages, skills, factor intensity and growth. Of central interest is the question to what extent is foreign ownership an explanatory factor of performance gaps? Empirical evidence supports the existence of performance gaps between foreign and domestic firms, yet foreign ownership is a much less important explanatory factor than normally assumed. Structural factors like industry, size and multi-nationality per se are more important. It is argued that such results are broadly consistent with those derived in the literatures on ownership change, on foreign entry and on spillovers. The concluding section discusses the normative issue whether there is a case for investment promotion policies to discriminate between firms on the basis of performance gaps by ownership. / Series: Working Papers Series "Growth and Employment in Europe: Sustainability and Competitiveness"
