Administrative Evaluation of Online Faculty in Community Colleges

Darling, Douglas Duane January 2012 (has links)
Policy and procedure haven’t kept up with institutional practices at community colleges. With over 5.5 million college students taking online courses, 29% of college students are taking an online course. As student numbers taking online courses have increased, so have the number of faculty teaching online. The purpose of this study is to determine if and how community college, online, faculty are administratively evaluated. The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) of the members of the American Association of Community Colleges were surveyed to determine the factors considered relevant for online, asynchronous, administrative evaluation of faculty that are currently being used by community colleges and to determine the methods by which community college, online faculty are administratively evaluated. The literature review did not identify any research directly related to the administrative evaluation of community college, online faculty. A very limited amount of research on administrative evaluation of faculty was identified, but nearly all were over a decade old. The survey results indicate that a majority of community colleges do not specifically address evaluation of online faculty in policy. The results identify the criteria and methods used to evaluate online faculty and their rated importance. The most common criteria included in the evaluations were identified and their importance ranked by CAO’s. The data was analyzed by institutional size based on the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) categories and contrasted and compared with the other institutional size categories. A proposed model/method for developing a comprehensive faculty evaluation system based the survey results and best practices from the literature review is presented along with recommendations for further research.

The Influence of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) on Faculty Leadership

Unknown Date (has links)
The study was born out of a deep concern that there have been missed opportunities to apply cultural intelligence to enrich leadership, instruction, and learning. In particular, direct interaction and observation of students from multicultural backgrounds have revealed the value in adjusting one’s mindset to creating a more inclusive learning environment. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of cultural intelligence on faculty leadership. The problem addressed was the growing need for faculty to expand their cultural intelligence to enable them to demonstrate exemplary leadership in 21st century classrooms. The study measured the cultural intelligence of faculty using the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS). Faculty members’ leadership was measured using the Leadership Practices Inventory Self (LPI-Self). This quantitative study used associational and survey methods to predict scores and explain associations among variables. Overall, behavioral CQ and cognitive CQ had a greater influence on the following leadership practices: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Challenge the Process. For the private university, behavioral CQ had a greater influence on the following leadership practices: Model the Way and Inspiring a Shared Vision. The public university did not show preference for any of the five leadership practices. For the state college, cognitive CQ had a greater influence on all leadership practices, except for Model the Way. The results of this study confirmed that cultural intelligence significantly influenced leadership practices of faculty members. These findings provide important information for faculty development programs, curriculum development, and hiring practices. An urgent requirement for advancing teaching and learning in today’s higher education classrooms is a keen understanding of the underlying values, beliefs, and perceptions of students. These qualities affect students’ understanding and how they express themselves in the classroom. The decision to give instructional leaders leadership training in cultural intelligence is highly recommended. While faculty members showed preference for certain leadership practices, their preferences might be incorporated to develop a blended leadership style that may be more suitable for today’s diverse academic community. The association found between cultural intelligence and leadership practices confirms the value of faculty development in cultural intelligence. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Current faculty development practices for alternative delivery systems in Christian higher education institutions: A qualitative study

Yates, Steven Lowell 11 December 2009 (has links)
This research study was an investigation of current faculty development practices for alternative delivery systems. Attention was given to faculty development in general as well as specific facets of faculty development for alternative delivery systems. Future or intended faculty development practices were pursued, along with factors that influence decisions related to faculty development practices for alternative delivery systems at Christian graduate institutions of higher education. The examination of the precedent literature presented theological foundations for the study, current research on faculty development, and current research on alternative delivery systems. The concepts revealed in the literature review focused the structure of the research design and instrumentation. The presentation of the methodological design included the primary research questions, an overview of the research design and coding criteria, discussion of the research population, samples and delimitations, and the limitations of generalization. This section also discussed instrumentation and procedural processes guiding the research. The research then offered a summary and analysis of the data, organized according the order of the research questions. Conclusions based upon the research findings included a number of insights. The principal type of faculty development for alternative delivery systems was consulting or help desk support. The interviewees stated that faculty learned the most from one-on-one sessions tailored to faculty members' specific topics when faculty need "just in time" assistance. The distance education coordinators were available for a faculty "crisis," and many coordinators would venture out into the faculty hallways to offer their services. The second-most common type of faculty development for alternative delivery systems was the initial training session. Multiple institutions offered (and some required) a 1-3 day faculty boot camp in order to teach online, hybrid, or blended courses. These courses were followed up with journal articles, one-on-one meetings, and other resources. Institutions provided web sites and comprehensive printed notebooks to assist the faculty in their transition to alternative delivery systems. Hands-on training in a lab setting, with small groups of up to four professors, was communicated as the preferred training environment to provide both technical and pedagogical development. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-27T14:30:48Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Luciane Tudda.pdf: 3411608 bytes, checksum: 214de2c60e68e3b490f7e7373bb391fb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-10-07 / The central theme of this work is the inclusion of research activities in the undergraduate Administration Curriculum of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). The object is to show the curriculum in action as seen by the faculty; and to support the building of a continuous evaluation process of both the teaching and the learning of research, so as to sustain and consolidate the programme's activities, and to contribute to its improvement. The main sources are Andrade, Amboni, Covre, Demo, Imbernón, Martins, Pimenta, Anastasiou, Sacristán, Severino, Sguissardi, Szymanski, Almeida, Prandini, Tardif e Lessard. The writer has opted for a qualitative approach, incorporating subsidies from quantitative research; as well as from bibliographic, documental and field research. As a strategy for the collection of data, reflexive semi-structured interviews were conducted, in order to generate understanding of how these activities were proposed in the programme's Educational Project, how they were implanted, and how they are experienced by the docents. Bibliographic and documental analysis of the data obtained has made it possible to display the results of field research. The insertion of research activities into the programme is understood by the majority of the programme's managers and faculty members as an advance in terms of the students' education; and as a means of presenting the challenges encountered in the day-to-day, as well as alternative paths proposed for the enhancement and consolidation of research within the undergraduate Administration programme of PUC-SP / Este trabalho tem como tema central a implantação de atividades de pesquisa no Currículo do curso de graduação em Administração da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) e o objetivo de desvelar o Currículo na ação sob a ótica dos professores do curso, e subsidiar a construção de um processo contínuo de avaliação do ensino e aprendizagem da pesquisa que possa dar sustentabilidade à consolidação destas atividades no curso e contribuir para o seu aprimoramento Os principais autores que subsidiam o trabalho são: Andrade, Amboni, Covre, Demo, Imbernón, Martins, Pimenta, Anastasiou, Sacristán, Severino, Sguissardi, Szymanski, Almeida, Prandini, Tardif e Lessard.
