The impact of family preservation and family reunification services on families in South Africa: a case study of Amathole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province

Zimba, Zibonele France January 2017 (has links)
Families in communities remain vulnerable and, apart from poverty, face a host of other crises and challenges on a daily basis. Amongst the challenges that families face, children are affected most. Services targeting families with very young children therefore are imperative. This study was aimed at exploring the impact of family preservation and family reunification services on families in South Africa, with a focus on the Eastern Cape Province. To answer the research questions of this study, the research adopted a mixed methods design known as methodological triangulation. The study incorporated two sets of participants, Social Workers and heads of families that benefit from family preservation and family reunification services. The total sample for the study included 260 participants; 220 of the participants were heads of families and 40 of the participants were Social Workers. Questionnaires were administered to 200 heads of families and 20 Social Workers selected by means of the random sampling technique. In addition, 20 heads of families and 20 Social Workers who participated in in-depth interviews were purposively selected. The quantitative data were analysed by means of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and qualitative data were categorised with the use of themes and subthemes

The epidemiological and demographic transitions of the populations, influence the increasing demand for hospital health services and eventually will cause the crisis of the current health model. The health systems sighted in the home health care services an ideal solution to offer more health services. When moving the health care, from hospitals to the patient's houses, also moved medical devices and their associated risks, those that must be managed. Home care organizations are already managing their risks, as part of compliance of health rules or safety and quality programs. It is necessary to measure how risk management has already been implemented in healthcare institutions. This research aims propose a methodology that measures the current implementation of the three elements of risk management. The proposed methodology considers and weighs the same as for implementing the principles, structure and processes items of risk management. On the other hand, the methodologies compare the relevant risk management items with the implemented items, considering the specificity and uniqueness of each organization, and consider the objective and subjective factors of risk management. Finally it proposes a classification of health organizations, according to their risk management implementation level. The results of applying this methodology in four simulations and a real study case show that this proposal can be applied in any health organization that needs monitoring their risk management / Doutorado / Engenharia Biomedica / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica

Recommendations for "weaving a circle of care" for families affected by HIV/AIDS in a specific south rand community

Louw, Nadia Marie 09 June 2008 (has links)
M.Ed. / Over the past decade, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has had a devastating effect on many communities and families in South Africa. Many families have already lost, and many more will lose, primary caregivers to the disease. This could have a serious impact on the living conditions and emotional wellbeing of families, and especially of children and adolescents. As an intern educational psychologist working in the Eldorado Park community, the researcher became aware of the difficulties and needs experienced by families that are affected by HIV/AIDS. This study therefore aims to identify the needs of families affected by HIV/AIDS, in order to assist the educational psychologist by making recommendations for weaving a circle of care to support them, within an asset-based approach. To accomplish this, the study utilised a participatory research approach within a critical theoretical paradigm and case study design. Purposeful selection was employed and as the study is concerned with HIV/AIDS which requires the utmost confidentiality, the families were identified with the help of home-based care workers. The researcher interviewed three families and eight home-based care workers in the Eldorado Park community. Detailed data analysis and interpretation of the needs highlighted during these interviews revealed a number of common themes, which are indicative of the needs of families affected by HIV/AIDS in the Eldorado Park area. These families expressed a need for awareness, love and understanding from their communities. They also wish to have greater understanding and support from schools, as well as expressing the need for opportunities to share their experiences and raise community awareness by speaking at schools and churches, and through support groups. Families furthermore require assistance with the great economic difficulties they face, largely due to illness and unemployment. A need to gain greater access to medical care, social grants and burial societies, was expressed. Difficulties with transport and documentation seemed to create a major barrier in this regard. The need for psychological and spiritual counselling as well as legal advice was highlighted. The study provides recommendations and a practical asset map to assist the educational psychologist in weaving a circle of care for families affected by HIV/AIDS. / Mrs. Helen Krige Dr. Elzette Fritz

Self-sufficiency programs in Hampton public housing

Conklin, Tamara L. 10 November 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine tenant participation in self-sufficiency programs in Hampton Public Housing and to explore relationships that might exist between participation in programs, demographic factors, and housing values. A theoretical framework was developed based on the human needs theory and an adaptation of the home values test. Programs offered to the Pine Chapel community of Hampton, Virginia were ranked by HUD administrators to determine programs most likely to assist residents in achieving self-sufficiency. Higher ranked programs were related to education for adults and children. Data was collected from 42 residents. The sample consisted, primarily of black female single parents between 19 and 25 years old. Chi Square analysis was performed to test three hypotheses. Marital status, number of dependents, and household type were found to be significantly related to level of program participation. Findings indicate that households most likely to be involved in higher-level programs were married-couple households, households with two dependents, or dual-parent and multi-generational households. Most respondents had lower-level housing values. However, marital status was significantly related to housing values. Households most likely to have higher level housing values were those where respondents were separated, widowed, or divorced. No significant relationship was found between the level of program participation and the level of housing values. Conclusions reached were that households with two adults present may have offered more opportunities for respondents’ participation in educational programs. Most participant households included children and their program involvement often centered around children. / Master of Science

Utilization of community-based services among families with children with a mental disorder

Lane, Dymika Machelle 01 January 2007 (has links)
Families of children with a mental disorder typically have many stressors due to their children's behavioral functioning. These families do not always choose to receive community-based services that are intended to decrease the stressors within the families and prevent the children from being placed out of the families' homes. This study investigated the relationship between clients' functioning during their initial assessment provided by the Victor Community Support Services (VCSS), compared to their functioning when they were discharged from VCSS based on the families utilization of community-based services.
