Ireland’s particular national culture has shaped an imaginary conception of identity which has also affected the image of women. Irish drama has contributed significantly to the debate on and revisionism of Irish identity and, in the twentieth century, the Easter Rising in 1916 was chosen by some Irish playwrights as a background to promote reflection on this question. Sean O’Casey and Tom Murphy presented versions of the Easter Rising on the Abbey stage which approached the identity of Irish women in a nationalistic context. A comparison of these two dramatic texts reveals that, although the playwrights used different strategies, they both reassessed the female image promoted by Irish nationalism.

O feminino em Tieta e Macabéa

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Glaucia Cosme.pdf: 993984 bytes, checksum: a9ef7a9a8859f2f7b32318a9ab66d5cf (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-01-22 / This work, resulting from an analytical and interpretative study of the works Tieta do Agreste, by Jorge Amado, and A hora da estrela, written by Clarice Lispector, aims to investigate how female identity is portrayed in such novels. From this perspective, this study relies on the Critical Theory of Society and Literary Sociology: the first is based on authors such Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno; the second is grounded on Antonio Cândido and Alfredo Bosi s theories. Both perspectives emphasize the importance of the historical context for understanding the work, articulating the underlying text with the fictional setting of the narrative elements. Therefore, by analyzing the characters Tieta and Macabea, it will be questioned how female identity is presented in the 1970s. First, it is analyzed the historical context in which the narratives are involved; next it is examined the works and their protagonists and finally it is discussed how female identity is established in these narratives as well as socially, highlighting the main point of rapprochement between the protagonists concerning female roles. At this point, it was sought theoretical support primarily in Nelly Richard, who talks about the fragmentation of the female and points up their exclusion from the conservative culture in large-scale of social spheres. Since female identity is overwhelmed by preconceptions grounded in the Judeo-Christian culture and internalized by society, the women remain at the social margin. By analyzing identity, two disparate personalities can be put together when it comes to female representation. Still, it is discussed the conservative culture that sets society in motion, which when represented from fiction enables to find traces of the 1977 society, year of publication of both narratives. The marks of this period are shown connected to the exclusion of women. The identity, treated as a totalizing element, serves as a point of submersion of women in social spheres. Thus, it is understood that the protagonists as well as women, are looking for space, seeking to legitimacy of their identity.

You Crit Like a Girl: the Performance of Female Identity in the Virtual Gaming Community World of Warcraft

Viamonte, Connie M 13 November 2015 (has links)
This dissertation examines how gender is expressed and performed in the virtual gaming community of World of Warcraft. Players were approached through the medium of the game and through various on-line bulletin boards to answer surveys and open-ended interview questions about their experiences as a female player or with female players in this virtual society. In addition to answering questions, this project involved participant observations within several different types of realms or servers in World of Warcraft in order to gain a better understanding of community dynamics. The premise for this research is working through an idealistic notion that virtual communities might break down gender lines through allowing members to pick their gender or doing away with biological differences in gender altogether. This research hopes to dissect this idea and, furthermore, fill an important gap in existing sociological studies about virtual societies and games by making the argument that gender stereotypes carry over from the physical world into virtual spaces and, consequently, affect the vabried interactions of players within this virtual community as well as the gender performance of female players, in particular. Observations and game design suggests that many of the aesthetic principles of the female avatars available in World of Warcraft cater to attracting heterosexual male players. Clothing and armor is revealing and female avatars are highly sexualized not just through appearance, but through programmed behaviors in the game. This research examines the effects of such pre-conditioned parameters on the population of this top ranked game.

Mužská a ženská identita v súčasnej spoločnosti / Male and female identity in contemporary society

Frolo, Radovan January 2011 (has links)
The aim of the graduation thesis is to describe the stereotypical perception of men and women in today's society. The thesis links this perception to their signification, while working as reporters for private and public broadcasters. This thesis is focusing on the students of various universities and their subjective point of view when it comes to the parity of both sexes. These students were also asked to compare equality of genders in the public sphere as well as in their private lives, and to describe their attitude towards the media in general. Graduation thesis points out the existence of gender stereotypes, even in the field of news that is spread by the television. This graduation thesis consists of four main chapters. The first chapter includes basic expressions and definitions connected with the key terms gender and identity. The second chapter talks about women's identity nowadays and it's development in the past. The third chapter is comparable to the second one, since it talks about men's identity. The very last part of the thesis is strictly practical and it consists of three separate parts. The first part is the analysis of the situation in four specific televisions. The second part includes the preparation and analysis of in-depth interviews with the respondents and the third part contains a practical suggestion in the form of an annotation. This annotation can be used as a guideline for a new school subject taught at universities.

Abstract: Research recovers the memory and history of life of Sao Paulo Saihou Jogakuin boarding school's ex-students, the importance of this institution on the development of their female identity. El uso del lenguaje cinematográfico para representar la feminidad en el cine asiático / The use of the cinematographic language to represent femininity in Asian cinema

Arteaga Loarte, Carmen del Pilar 25 April 2020 (has links)
Asian cinema can be taken as a type of paradigm that has tried to move away from the one established by the almost monopolistic Hollywood film industry. This cinema has been labeled Eurocentrically as "peripheral cinema", because of the simplification that these cinematography’s are sometimes subjected to, deleting their rich diversity. Sometimes this type of cinema is loaded with cinematographic sensuality not necessarily explicit, but rather subtle. They develop plots that are not so complex, or sometimes they are, but totally inversed in a languid cinematographic rhythm that uses visuals and sounds elements that try to make the public committed with the experience of their movies. This cinema also, show us the figure of a woman far away from the phallocentric idea and the stereotypical construct of: the good woman (the virgin and the mother) and the bad woman (the prostitute and the femme fatal), the virtuous (the faithful partner) and the vicious (who appears as easy prey to any man). Everything that in the West has been telled from the perspective of man, in his role as screenwriter, film director, producer or critic. / Trabajo de investigación

A Love Affair: Feminist Voice and Representation in the Romance Fiction Narrative

Loughridge, Anna L 01 January 2015 (has links)
I focus on the changing and now contemporary feminist conceptualization of romance fiction. Through the genre’s mass-market success and complicated history, a definition of ro·mance (genre) is conjured. By depicting a fantasy world for the female reader to escape to, feminist critics and romance academics have found the genre’s influence to be an effective one. In an analysis if popular romance fiction author, Emily Giffin, and her most recent novel The One & Only, I demonstrate what has now resulted in the modern romance and further, how the modern heroine is understood today.
