Professional Social Work as a Western Invention in Ghanaian Contexts. A Minor Field Study Examining Ghanaian Professional Social Workers Experiences of Legitimacy

Björck, Alexander January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the study is to examine professional social workers experiences of legitimacy in conducting social work in Ghana’s capital Accra and to discuss possible sources of legitimacy. The idea is to problematize social work as a profession developed and constructed in Western contexts and exported to Ghana during the British colonization. The issue of legitimacy is examined from Ghanaian professional social workers subjective experiences of their meetings with clients and traditional authorities that historically been conducting social work in Ghana. The study is structured around three broad themes intending to explore the Ghanaian social workers experienced legitimacy as professionals in different sequences of the social work; the social workers experiences of legitimacy to (1) classify social problems, (2) to reason about social problems and (3) to take action on social problems. These themes are also basis for the fourth theme that provides a more explanatory discussion of the social workers experiences; (4) possible sources of legitimacy. The analysis conclude that the social workers experiences of legitimacy differ between whether the social work is conducted on an individual level or a community level, towards nuclear families or extended families and whether it is conducted in a social domain or institution that historically and traditionally been in the jurisdiction of traditional authorities or if it is a domain or institution that is recently introduced in the Ghanaian contexts due to modernization.

How the educational system in China is designed

Andersson, Felicia, Nordström, Emelie January 2014 (has links)
This is a qualitative study, and the purpose is to examine and gain a deeper understanding of China’s school system. Results from international comparative studies, such as the PISA survey and the TIMSS study, show that Chinese students have the highest mathematical scores. This evoked our interest and led to the beginning of this study. The research material comes from observations at three schools and interviews with in-service teachers, pre-service teachers and a head teacher in Hohhot, China. The results and the conclusion of this study shows that the content in the Chinese curriculum is comprehensive and does not give much time to individualize the lessons. The Chinese school system is very exam-oriented, and together with the pressure from the society and their parents, the students are forced to spend a lot of time to study. Another conclusion to this study is that pre-service teachers in China do not have much teacher practice at schools, but they study a lot of mathematics and methodology separately at the university.

The Peculiar Case of the Megrelians - Representation and Identity Negotiation in Post-Societ Georgia

Svitzer, Bobby January 2012 (has links)
In the post-Soviet country of Georgia is a strong sense of nationalism prevalent in the current process of nation building. The Megrelians, traditionally understood as a sub-ethnic Georgian group, form a majority in western Georgia. Many Megrelians are however displaced due to a civil war in 1992 and live outside their traditional territories. Much research has been done covering the situation of the displaced Megrelians. This study however, examines processes of Megrelian identity negotiations in relation to Megrelian representations, thus contributing to a wider understanding of Megrelians’ self-understanding. A field study was undertaken for two months in Georgia in order to gather information for this topic. From an ethnographic research approach, methods of interviews and observations were used to gather data. The findings from the analysis are discussed in relation to theories of representation, nationalism and identity. The study suggests that Megrelian identity interrelates with representations of politics, regional and national associations, surnames, language and assumed characteristics.

International Organizations and democracy promotion - A Minor field study of Ghana’s democratic process

Mengesha, Rudy January 2014 (has links)
The thesis is a qualitative case study which examines how International Organizations promote democracy and the Ghanaians views and experiences of the process. The case study is a Minor Field Study conducted in Accra, Ghana during two months through semi-structured interviews and the collection of secondary sources such as literature, UN documents, journal articles and internet sources. The theoretical discussion has its starting point in a theoretical framework of democracy. The aim of the case study is to make visible the Ghanaians perceptions of IOs democracy promotion and the issues that are included in it. This study concludes that IOs need to revise their methods of democracy promotion and determination of democracies through more focus on the time between elections. Furthermore it highlights the importance to separate economic and democratic development and investigate the time between elections in the process.

ADVANCEMENTS IN FULL WAVEFORM TOMOGRAPHY FOR NEAR SURFACE GEOTECHNICAL APPLICATIONS: INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS OF PARAMETERIZATION AND WORKFLOW ON ANOMALY DETECTION

Alidoust Golroudbari, Pourya 12 1900 (has links)
Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is a powerful seismic imaging technique used to reconstruct high-resolution velocity models of the subsurface. It relies on the inversion of seismic data acquired from multiple sources and receivers to estimate the mechanical properties of geologic materials and can be used to detect anomalous subsurface conditions. The accuracy of FWI results is influenced by various factors related to the workflow used for its implementation. This includes the survey parameters, the mathematical framework of the inversion, and the complexity of the subsurface conditions modeled during the inversion process. Therefore, it is crucial to have a fundamental understanding of the interplay between these factors and their impact on the accuracy of the reconstructed model, particularly given the effects of these factors on computational costs. This is an area that has been understudied within the context of near-surface geotechnical applications for anomaly detection, which is an application that presents unique challenges relative to seismic exploration for hydrocarbons where FWI has been more fully developed. One key aspect that has not received sufficient attention is the impact of survey parameters on the accuracy of FWI results. The lack of formal research in this topic may lead to near-surface FWI studies that use more seismic sources than required for subsurface feature reconstruction, which results in data collection and computational inefficiencies. The selection of misfit function and starting model are also essential factors influencing the reliability of the reconstructed model. The physics employed for forward modeling can also affect the ability to simulate wave propagation in the domain of interest. These factors have significant implications for near-surface applications of FWI, and further research is required to explore their interplay and improve FWI workflow.Given the gaps in the current implementation of FWI for geotechnical applications, this research will explore the role of parameterization and workflow on FWI results when applied to anomaly detection in karst conditions. This will include selection of an FWI workflow that can improve the feasibility of fieldwork and reduce the processing time. The research will investigate four key factors of the FWI workflow (i.e., survey design, initial model, misfit function, and forward modeling physics) for detection of sinkholes using numerical and field testing in different subsurface conditions. Overall, the outcomes of this research will help practitioners with more appropriate choices in the FWI process and consequently promote its high potential in near-surface applications. / Civil Engineering

Lindholm, Maria, Palm, Sara January 2007 (has links)
This Master thesis has been performed at CTD- the Centre for Wood Technology and Design at the University of Linköping and has been carried out in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia. The objective of this thesis is to study the mechanical properties and uses of Guadua chacoensis, a bamboo native to Bolivia. Throughout history, bamboo has been used in many countries for a variety of purposes. In Asia bamboo is an important raw-material for buildings and furniture. It is also used for making paper and for land rehabilitation and fuel. In South America many countries, among them Bolivia, have great potential to use bamboo in the same way. One of the key ideas with this Master thesis is to make a contribution to support the Bolivian economy and welfare by elucidate this, hitherto undeveloped, natural resource. This thesis is a Minor field study partly financed by Sida- the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. During the field study theoretical studies were made, collecting local and international information about bamboo and Guadua chacoensis in particular. Laboratory tests were prepared and conducted at UPSA- the Private University of Santa Cruz de la Sierra and several localities of the plant were visited. Through tensile-, bending- and hardness test it is found that Guadua chacoensis is a flexible, medium soft material and is comparable with European oak when it comes to the tensile strength. This leads to the conclusion that this bamboo species, among other fields of applications, can be used for constructions, like houses and bridges, and furniture manufacturing. Long-term water modelling of the Soil-Plant-Atmosphere System : A study conducted for the growing of Grape Leaves with drip irrigation in the Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam

Cavell, Julia, Andersson, Sara January 2013 (has links)
The main objective was to set up models of the soil-plant-atmosphere system for the growing of Grape Leaves with drip irrigation in the Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam. The computer software tool CoupModel was used in this modelling process. The focus of the model was the systems soil hydraulics and the water balance between its components. When running several 21 years simulations it could be seen that slight variations in soil texture inputs resulted in relatively big output changes. For example, by either using the soil texture laboratory results or the soil water retention inputs gained from tensiometers and moisture meters in the field, gave an annual irrigation amount difference of 100 mm. However, it can be questioned if the models reached the goal of simulating an  efficient irrigation schedule  due to the soil evaporation output being high throughout the year.  For further research, longer time series of field measurements together with more knowledge about the plant would be preferable in order to validate and improve the model.

Optimization of an energy system in rural Thailand

Lund, Axel, Malmberg, Mattias January 2023 (has links)
By 2020, Thailand ensured 100% electricity access to its 72 million inhabitants. This was partly done by promoting off-grid energy systems in rural areas instead of using costly grid extensions. Although electricity is ensured for all, future challenges and objectives include- increasing the share of renewable energy and decreasing energy dependence while simultaneously meeting the increasing demand. Off-grid energy solutions for rural areas have been studied in many previous projects. The most optimal energy system concerning cost, resilience, and emissions can be found by quantifying natural resources, estimating electricity consumption, and comparing technologies. This project aims to evaluate how an existing off-grid system can be complemented in the future. This was done by using the optimization program HOMER. The village Ban Wangwon, located in Prachuap Khiri Khan, was for a long time without electricity access due to a law obstructing them from connecting to the grid. This changed when in 2018, households were mounted with PV and BESS. Energy demand in the village was determined in three scenarios based on the World Banks tier system for rural energy and the previous population growth. In addition, the availability of meteorological and natural resources, energy load profile, and price of technology were determined based on the literature review and a field study. According to the results, the most optimal energy system for today's electricity use, Scenario 1, regarding both cost and emissions, was a PV/BESS system. In scenarios 2 and 3, a PV/BESS/Bio configuration proved the most cost-effective, although not optimal regarding emission rates for future energy demand. However, this system sees much lower emissions compared to when diesel generators were included, which makes this suitable for reaching Ban Wangwons requirements. Using a bio generator optimally requires a centralized energy system, requiring settlements with landowners. The biomass fuel considered in this work was pineapple crowns due to the abundance of pineapple factories and farms in the area. After a sensitivity analysis, the most impactful variables proved to be fuel prices, bio generator efficiency, and discount rate. Only one type of solar panel and battery was considered, and the load was assumed to be constant, which hindered the credibility of the results. Future projects could investigate more thoroughly how pineapple waste can be utilized in energy production, how price changes in renewable energy affect the outcome, and how a microgrid would be constructed. The results were considered beneficial in achieving SDGs 1 No poverty, 7 Affordable and clean energy, 11 Sustainable cities and communities, and 13 Climate action.
