According to an old way of thinking, any leve! of problematicity with respect to truth or theory dependence suffices to spoil the objectivity of a proposal. No credible discourse complies with such restrictions. Far from compromising the existence of knowledge, correct and incorrect, rational and nonrational ideas, however. the said old way of thinking is simply incapable of representing the cognitive achievements that we actually have. This paper discusses a contemporary way of approaching the difference between ideas of high and low descriptive quality in terms of epistemological criteria that prevail in the most rigorous and reliable scientific practices. / Según un viejo modo de pensar, la objetividad de una propuesta queda seriamente comprometida si, a cualquier nivel, ésta resulta problemática con respecto a la verdad o depende de teorías de cualquier tipo. Ningún discurso creíble satisface semejantes restricciones. Esto no afecta sin embargo, la existencia de logros como el conocimiento, las ideas correctas e incorrectas, racionales y no racionales. Simplemente, el mencionado modo de pensar es incapaz de representar los éxitos cognitivos que de hecho logramos. Mi objetivo en este trabajo es discutir un modo contemporáneo de abordar la diferencia entre ideas de alta y baja calidad descriptiva. Para ello apelo a la pertinencia general de ciertos criterios epistemológicos vigentes en las prácticas cientíticas más rigurosas y contiables.

This paper purports toshow that it is not necessary to read the early Platonic dialogues starting from the classic theory of Forms. It argues, instead, that it is possibleto analyze them and, above all, to explain the use of the vocabulary of presence starting from the more general and prior possibility of distinguishing a subject from its accidental predicates, especially quality. The relation of present in or being in to which Plato recurs. is inherited by Aristotle. The distinction between being said about something as asubject and being in something as in a subject (Categories 2) seems to be anatural development of Platonic ontology. It is argued that the Aristotelian conception is closer to the earlier than to the intermediate dialogues. / El trabajo se propone mostrar que no es necesario leer los diálogos platónicos tempranos desde la teoría clásica de las Formas, sino que es posible analizarlos y, sobre todo, explicar el uso del vocabulario de la presenciaa la luz del problema más general -y previo- de la posibilidad de distinguir entre un sujeto y los predicados accidentales, en especial la cualidad. La relación de presente en o de estar en a la que recurre Platón es heredada por Aristóteles. La distinción entre las expresiones decirse de algo como de un sujeto y estar en algo como en un sujeto(Categorías 2) parece ser un desarrollo natural de la ontología platónica. Sostendremos que el planteo aristotélico está mucho más próximo al de los diálogos tempranos que al de los medios.

After having underlined the three difficulties of the Aristotelian detinition of virtue-the oximoron hexis proairetike as central paradox, the difticult balance between phrorimos and logos, and the enigmatic impression of that regarding us in relation to which everything is at stake- the A.shows that his explanation also gives all its sense to the autonomy project that is at the heart of his work. This project, as any other philosophical project, could not begrounded nor justitied a priori. Nevertheless, it is the only one that opens human liberty to its true dimension, namely, the position /acceptance of new forms. This does not exempt one from examining its internal coherence nor of looking for its real bearers in society. / Después de haber subrayado las tres dificultades de la definición aristotélica de virtud --el oxímoron hexisproairetiké como aporía central, el equilibrio difícil entre phrórimos y lagos, y la impresión enigmática de ese en cuanto a nosotros en relación con el cual todo se juega- el A. muestra que su elucidación otorga asimismo su pleno sentido al proyecto de autonomía que está en el corazón de su obra. Este proyecto, como cualquier otro proyecto filosófico, no podría fundamentarse ni legitimarse a priori. Pero es el único que abre la libertad humana a su dimensión verdadera: a saber, la posición /aceptación de formas nuevas. Lo que no exime de examinar su coherencia interna ni de buscar sus portadores reales en la sociedad.

The article grapples with the question whether Plato believed that, in the matter of arete, the female psyche had a built-in inclination to immorality in a way that the male psyche did not, and was therefore assuch signiticantly different from the male psyche. It is argued that the evidence of the Timaeus ( and, to some lesser degree, of the Laws) suggests very strongly that he did, though fortunately the political consequence she drew from this (in the Laws) tum out to be positive rather than negative. Aristotle, by contrast,it is argued, while still holding to the lamentable theory of the inferiority of woman, talks of ditl'eringquanta of (one and the same) arete in male and female souls, rather than a difference in their very arete. / El artículo discute la cuestión de si Platón creía que, en el asunto de la areté, la psyché femenina tenía una inclinación natural a la inmoralidad en un sentido que no tenía la psyché masculina, y que por ende era signiticativamente distinta a la psyché masculina. Se arguye que el Timeo (y en menor grado. las Leyes) sugiere fuertemente que sí lo creyó, aunque afortunadamente las consecuencias políticas que intirió de ello (en las Leyes) resultan positivas en lugar de negativas. Se arguye, por el contrario, que Aristóteles -aun cuando sigue manteniendo la teoría lamentable de la inferioridad de las mujeres-habla de diferentes quanta de (una y la misma) areté en las almas masculinas y femeninas, en lugar deuna diferencia en su misma areté.
