Two approaches to the study of detached flows

Ottino, Gabriele 24 April 2009 (has links)
In the present work flow separation phenomena are investigated by means of two different approaches. In the first part, 2D unsteady incompressible inviscid flows are studied. An analytical-numerical model, based on the conjunction of a conformal mapping and a point vortex method, is built to define the potential flow field in a doubly connected domain where bodies are characterized by a variation in time of their circulation. In particular, the study of the unsteady flow past a 2-blade Darrieus VAWT is addressed. Until now the study of vortex motions has only been described in doubly-connected flow fields where the circulations have a constant null value. The flow field here analysed has a deep unsteadiness, which determines the circulations varying in time: so a technique is developed to uniquely define the circulations around the bodies. Three conditions result necessary to be imposed: in addition to the two Kutta conditions at the trailing edges, another one has to be imposed in order to respect the Kelvin theorem. With a classical configuration, this machine, experiencing angles of attack of opposite values, gives rise to complex vortex shedding phenomena that reduce its performances and stress its structure. In order to control the flow separation from the blades, an innovative solution is qualitatively investigated which consists of taking blade profiles provided with vortex trapping cavities. Interesting results are obtained, even if in the limit of inviscid flow. In the second part compressible viscous flows are taken into account. A fully Navier-Stokes equations solver is implemented introducing the penalization technique. The idea is to replace the bodies by the fluid, in a way that also into the bodies the penalized Navier-Stokes equations remain valid, respecting the boundary conditions on their contours. Starting from this purpose, the bodies are considered as porous media with a little porosity with respect to that of the external flow, which tends to infinity. This technique allows simple Cartesian meshes to be used, also for very complex geometries like those of industrial interest. The resulting code is tested on different flow fields, both steady and unsteady, both subsonic and supersonic, obtaining always a good agreement with other theoretical and numerical results described in literature.

Guichard, Cindy 29 November 2011 (has links)
This thesis is focused on numerical methods dedicated to the simulation of multiphase flow in porous media, involved in petroleum or environmental engineering. We present a generic formulation of the flow model which is able to take into account any number of components within any number of phases. In our approach the approximation of the diffusive fluxes (mainly resulting from Darcy's law) is based on new schemes, called gradient schemes, which show several advantages over the standard industrial numerical schemes : these schemes, which belong to the class of the cell-centred MultiPoint Flux Approximation finite volume schemes, are not symmetric and may lead to difficulties of convergence in the case of high anisotropy ratios. We indeed show that gradient schemes are naturally providing symmetric and convergent approximations. We particularly study the Vertex Approximate Gradient scheme (called the VAG scheme), whose discrete unknowns are the values at the cell centres and at the vertices of the mesh. This scheme implies the definition of fluxes between the centre of a given cell and its vertices, used for the extension of the scheme to multiphase flow. Numerical tests show the robustness and the accuracy of the method for a low computational cost, which enables the use of the VAG scheme in an industrial framework. A test case, based on experimental data of injection and dissolution of CO2 in the near-well region within a saline aquifer, shows the aptitude of the scheme for reproducing drying and salt precipitation, which are practically observed. Finally, a chapter of the thesis is devoted to the theoretical and practical study of a general numerical method for controlling Grid Orientation Effect in industrial simulators

Résolution numérique des transferts par rayonnement et conduction au sein d'un milieu semi-transparent pour une géométrie 3D de forme complexe / Computational method for combined radiation and conduction in participating media with complex 3D geometries

Trovalet, Lionel 21 October 2011 (has links)
This work deals with the numerical solution of coupled radiative and conductive heat transfer in participating media in complex 3D geometries. Thermal radiation is simulated by a numerical code developed during this thesis. This code solves the radiative transfer equation (RTE) by a modified finite volume method (FVM) with a cell-vertex formulation applied to unstructured tetrahedral meshes. It uses a closure relation based on an exponential scheme, a marching order map and an innovative matrix solution for the FVM applied to the RTE. The model is applied to absorbing-emitting, grey or non-grey media bounded by black or opaque walls with diffuse reflection. The mesh used for the radiation-conduction coupling is the one used by the finite element code for the conduction. The validation of the radiative code and the coupling are carried out through several test cases taken from the literature. Grey and isothermal media with different geometries are considered, and the effects of the spatial and angular discretizations are observed through a sensitivity study. Three closure schemes have been studied on a transparent medium in order to show their influence on the accuracy and false scattering. Studies of coupled heat transfer are carried out on radiative equilibrium problems and coupled radiation-conduction problems in steady or transient states with the dimensionless equations. Finally a non-grey medium such glass is also studied, considering conduction and radiation in steady state with a spectral band model for radiation

Modeling of pollutants dispersion into a marine environment through wadis and submarine outfalls. Application to the pollution of the Bay of Tangier -Morocco

Belcaid, Aïcha 11 November 2013 (has links)
This work is a contribution to the study of horizontal buoyant jet behavior that presents the dispersion of discharges into the marine environment. It consists in the modeling of this flow by a mathematical approach based on numerical simulation by means of the finite volume method, the validation of a numerical model by measurements on experimental model at a small, and, finally, the simulation of pollutant dispersion on a large scale on a real case. Three cases of study were broached: The first case relates to the experimental and numerical study of horizontal round turbulent non-Boussinesq buoyant jet in a static homogeneous environment. The results were used to describe the nature and the behavior of the jet as a function of the initial conditions of ejection. The second study involved another case of discharges from outfalls. We investigated a numerical and experimental study about a horizontal buoyant wall turbulent jet in a static homogeneous environment. The aim was to analyze the influence the effect of both turbulence and wall boundary on the behavior of the jet. The latter case of study focused on numerical simulation in 2D and 3D of the coastal process of discharges dispersion on a free surface. This modeling dealt more precisely with the dispersion of discharges into a marine environment in the presence of cross flows. The bay of Tangier in Morocco was chosen as an application site. The results made it possible to visualize the dispersion mechanism and to gain valuable information on the flow generated by the interaction of discharges and high/low tide movements near the beaches of the bay.

Méthodes numériques hybrides basées sur une approche Boltzmann sur réseau en vue de l'application aux maillages non-uniformes / Hybrid numerical methods based on the lattice Boltzmann approach with application to non-uniform grids

Horstmann, Tobias 12 October 2018 (has links)
Despite the inherent efficiency and low dissipative behaviour of the standard lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) relying on a two step stream and collide algorithm, a major drawback of this approach is the restriction to uniform Cartesian grids. The adaptation of the discretization step to varying fluid dynamic scales is usually achieved by multi-scale lattice Boltzmann schemes, in which the computational domain is decomposed into multiple uniform subdomains with different spatial resolutions. For the sake of connectivity, the resolution factor of adjacent subdomains has to be a multiple of two, introducing an abrupt change of the space-time discretization step at the interface that is prone to trigger instabilites and generate spurious noise sources that contaminate the expected physical pressure signal. In the present PhD thesis, we first elucidate the subject of mesh refinement in the standard lattice Boltzmann method and point out challenges and potential sources of error. Subsequently, we propose a novel hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) that combines the stream and collide algorithm with an Eulerian flux-balance algorithm that is obtained from a finite-volume discretization of the discrete velocity Boltzmann equations. The interest of a hybrid lattice Boltzmann method is the pairing of efficiency and low numerical dissipation with an increase in geometrical flexibility. The HLBM allows for non-uniform grids. In the scope of 2D periodic test cases, it is shown that such an approach constitutes a valuable alternative to multi-scale lattice Boltzmann schemes by allowing local mesh refinement of type H. The HLBM properly resolves aerodynamics and aeroacoustics in the interface regions. A further part of the presented work examines the coupling of the stream and collide algorithm with a finite-volume formulation of the isothermal Navier-Stokes equations. Such an attempt bears the advantages that the number of equations of the finite-volume solver is reduced. In addition, the stability is increased due to a more favorable CFL condition. A major difference to the pairing of two kinetic schemes is the coupling in moment space. Here, a novel technique is presented to inject the macroscopic solution of the Navier-Stokes solver into the stream and collide algorithm using a central moment collision. First results on 2D tests cases show that such an algorithm is stable and feasible. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous HLBM.

Aguillon, Nina 29 September 2014 (has links)
In this work, we study two problems concerning hyperbolic systems involving interfaces. The first one concerns the study of models of coupling between a compressible fluid and a pointwise particle. The second one deals with the sharp numerical approximation of shocks, which are discontinuities that appear in the solutions of hyperbolic systems. In the first two parts of the manuscript, we introduce different models of fluid-particle couplings. The fluid and the particle interact on each other through a drag force, which brings their velocities closer to one another. The coupling is singular because it can be written as the product of a discontinuous function by a Dirac measure. However, the system can be precisely defined as follows. The particle is seen as an interface through which interface conditions linking the properties of the fluid with those of the particle are imposed. When the fluid follows the compressible Burgers equations, we prove the convergence of a family of finite volume schemes and obtain the existence of a solution when the initial data has total bounded variation. In the more difficult case where the fluid is described by the isothermal Euler equations, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a selfsimilar solution to the Riemann problem, when the particle is motionless. Numerical experiments are also presented. In the last part of this work, we build non diffusive numerical schemes for different hyperbolic systems. These finite volume schemes are built to be exact when the initial data is an isolated shock. They are based on a discontinuous reconstruction of the solution at the beginning of each time step, in order to reconstruct shocks inside some specific cells of the mesh. The schemes we present have a very low numerical diffusion and, when the reconstruction operator is well chosen, they are able to correctly approximate the solution on various problematic test cases. These cases include slowly moving shocks, strong shocks and shock reflections for gas dynamics, as well as the apparition of nonclassical shocks for systems that are not truely nonlinear.

Corrêa, Laís 14 December 2015 (has links)
The main objective of this work is to develop a numerical method for large eddy simulation of tridimensional turbulent flows using a model based on temporal filtering (TLES - Temporal Large Eddy Simulation). The developed method combines at least 2nd order temporal discretizations (Adams-Bashforth, QUICK, Runge-Kutta), a 2nd order projection method, and 2nd order spatial discretizations obtained by the finite volume method. This methodology was employed to the simulation of turbulent benchmark problems such as channel and lid-driven cavity flows. The latter is simulated for the first time using a TLES turbulence modelling. Results show excellent agreement when compared to Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and experimental data, with better results than classical results produced by standard LES formulation with spatial filtering.

Análise de discretizações e interpolações em malhas icosaédricas e aplicações em modelos de transporte semi-lagrangianos / Analysis of discretizations and interpolations on icosahedral grids and applications to semi-Lagrangian transport models

Peixoto, Pedro da Silva 12 June 2013 (has links)
Spherical domains are used to model many physical phenomena, as, for instance, global numerical weather prediction. The sphere can be discretized in several ways, as for example a regular latitude-longitude grid. Recently, also motivated by a better use of parallel computers, more isotropic grids have been adopted in atmospheric global circulation models. Among those, the icosahedral grids are promising. Which kind of discretization methods and interpolation schemes are the best to use on those grids are still a research subject. Discretization of the sphere may be done in many ways and, recently, to make better use of computational resources, researchers are adopting more isotropic grids, such as the icosahedral one. In this thesis, we investigate in detail the numerical methodology to be used in atmospheric models on icosahedral grids. The usual finite volume method of discretization of the divergence of a vector field is based on the divergence theorem and makes use of the midpoint rule for integration on the edges of computational cells. The error distribution obtained with this method usually presents a strong correlation with some characteristics of the icosahedral grid. We introduced the concept of cell alignment and developed a theory which explains the grid imprinting patterns observed with the usual divergence discretization. We show how grid alignment impacts in the order of the divergence discretization. The theory developed applies to any geodesic grid and can also be used for other operators such as curl and Laplacian. Several interpolation schemes suitable for icosahedral grids were analysed, including the vector interpolation and reconstruction problem on staggered grids. We considered alternative vector reconstruction methods, in particular, we developed a hybrid low cost and good precision method. Finally, employing the discretizations and interpolations previously analysed, we developed a semi-Lagrangian transport method for geodesic icosahedral grids. Several tests were carried out, including deformational test cases, which demonstrated that the methodology is suitable to use in global atmospheric models. The computational platform developed in this thesis, including mesh generation, interpolation, vector reconstruction and the transport model, provides a basis for future development of global atmospheric models on icosahedral grids.

Study of the multidimensional structure of multiphase flows through differential-pressure-based measurement devices.

Imada, Fabiano Hikoji Jorge 30 June 2014 (has links)
Já o último estudo mostrou qualitativamente a influência da quantidade de líquido na flutuação da pressão diferencial / The flowrate measurement of multiphase flows is a constant need at many industrial activities such as oil and gas exploration, steam transport lines control and monitoring of nuclear plants cooling systems. Within the available means for performing flowrate measurement, the differential pressure devices constitute one of the simplest methods, with their construction, application and operation in single phase flows being well known and defined by technical standards. However, their application has been extended to multiphase flows, usually being allied to a void fraction or phase volume fraction measurement technique. This work describes a numerical study of multiphase flows through differential pressure-based flowrate meters such as orifice plates and long radius nozzles. Firstly simulations of single phase flows through orifice plates and long radius nozzles were conducted in the Reynolds number range 15.000500.000. The obtained results of discharge coefficients were quantitatively compared to ISO Standard predicted values, showing a maximum deviation of approximately 4,9% for the orifice plates and of 1,0% for the nozzles. In a second stage, wet gas flows through orifice plates were simulated by means of three approaches. The calculated results of total mass flowrate were compared to experimental data provided by PETROBRAS. The approaches that considered the slip between phases provided the closest results to the experiments, with a mean relative error of 3, 9%, while the homogeneous modeling presented an error of 6, 6%. In these studies, the structures developed within the domain were also evaluated through the visualization of the phases distribution. Two suggestions for complementing the characterization of a multiphase flow are presented: (1) the introduction of void fraction information into the formulation presented by Paz (2011) and (2) the statistical analysis of the orifice plate pressure drop signal. Regarding the first item, quantitative comparison with experimental data suggested that the presented alternative is viable for production monitoring operations. The last study qualitatively revealed the influence of the liquid loading in the pressure drop fluctuation.

The aim of this work concern to study parameter identification methods on problems involving the advection-diffusion equation in two dimensions. This equation is solved employing the finite volume methods, and high-order reconstruction methods, on triangle unstructured meshes to solve the fluxes across the faces of control volumes. As parameter searching tool is employed technicals based on gradients. The gradients are solved using processes based on adjoint methods.
