Surface and porous structure of pigment coatings : Interactions with flexographic ink and effects on print qualityBohlin, Erik January 2013 (has links)
Each day, we are confronted with a large amount of more or less important information that we have to consider, and even in our digital society we need paper for communication, documentation and education. Much of the paper we use or are confronted by in our daily life, such as newspapers, books and packages, contains printed images or texts, and the appearance of both the print and the supporting surface is important. A good contrast between a printed text and the paper makes it easier to read, a detailed print of an illustration makes it more informative, and clear and evenly distributed colours on a package or on a poster make it more appealing. All of these qualities depend on the optical properties of the paper product and the the behavior of light illuminating the different materials. The aim of the work described in this thesis is to characterize the structure of coatings and prints, and to validate models for the optical response and interaction of ink and coating based on optical measurements of physical samples. It is the interactions between the printing ink and the porous structure of the coating layers that are subject to investigation. Experiments have been employed to relate the physical conditions in a flexographic printing nip to the ink setting, affected by the physical and chemical properties of the coating, to the resulting optical response of the printed paperboard. / The aim of the work described in this thesis is to characterize the structure of coatings and prints, and to validate models for the optical response and interaction of ink and coating based on optical measurements of physical samples. It is the interactions between the printing ink and the porous structure of the coating layers that are subject to investigation. Experiments have been employed to relate the physical conditions in a flexographic printing nip to the ink setting and the resulting optical response. By comparing simulated and measured results, it was shown that modifications of the surface properties account for the brightness decrease when substrates are calendered. Light scattering simulations, taking into account the surface micro-roughness and the increase in the effective refractive index, showed that surface modifications accounted for most of the observed brightness decrease, whereas the bulk light scattering and light absorption coefficients were not affected by calendering. Ink penetration affects the print density, mottling and dot gain. Results show that ink distribution is strongly affected by surface roughness, differences in pore size and pore size distribution. For samples having different latex amounts and different latex particle sizes, a higher print force did not increase the depth of penetrated ink to any great extent, but rather allowed the wetting to act more efficiently with a more evenly distributed ink film, a higher print density and fewer uncovered areas as a result. Uncovered areas could be linked both to local roughness variations and to local wettability variations on the surface. Samples with different ratios of calcium carbonate/kaolin clay pigment showed an increased porosity and an increase in print density with increasing amount of kaolin in the coating layer.

Návrh optimalizovaného řešení konstrukce a uložení suportu formového a rastrového válce flexotiskového barevníku / Optimized design of printing and anilox cylinder carriage of flexographic printing deckPavlas, Petr January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the optimized design solution and support housing proposal for a flexographic printing deck including the printing and anilox units. The support housing must be appropriately dimensioned to counteract the shock loads that occur during the printing process. At first, the thesis analyzes the impact load and the resulting size of loading forces. The support housing proposal is designed to resist these forces then.

Fleksografinės spausdinimo mašinos „OMET VARYFLEX 420 FP“ sekcijos pavaros dinaminio tikslumo tyrimas / Flexographic printing press „OMET VARYFLEX 420 FP“ unit‘s drive dynamical precision researchČernych, Konstantin 16 June 2006 (has links)
Master‘s graduation dissertation research object is the drive of one unit of multisection web-fed flexographic printing press „Omet Varyflex 420 FP“. The main purpose of the work is drive’s dynamical precision research, basing on the torsion vibration. But the main attention is concentrated on the research object mathematical model creation. It will be able to investigate torsion vibration. In the beginning there is description of the research object, its dynamical model and assumptions, made while modeling the object. As the main research object is mechanical drive, unit’s electric drive is not detailed. Unit‘s structural model is created using the „MATLAB Simulink“ software. While modeling, it was proved the model is adequate. It was investigated how generalized coordinates and dynamical datums change while the press is switched on and starts to work with constant angular acceleration and when the angular speed reaches particular value, it does not change any more. Amplitude-frequency and phase-frequency responses of some generalized coordinates were got. Changing some parameters flexographic printing plate aging is modeled. It is watched how aging influences torsion vibration. While modeling it was determined how gearwheels cyclic harmonic error’s amplitude and beds resistance coefficients influence dynamical datums. It was also determined unit’s electric drive influence on generalized coordinates frequency responses. Basing on the analysis of the results, the conclusions... [to full text]

The electromagnetic smog in which we live today is nowadays a real issue because it limits the use of certain technologies and also because there are some potential health risks associated with it, even if the latter is still a controversial subject. The importance of the interferences between wireless networks or the possibility of data hacking on the same networks are two examples. The aim of this thesis is to develop a new way to protect buildings against some of these electromagnetic waves. More specifically, this work focuses on a technology able to filter only the WiFi and the GSM waves through large areas of a home, like a wall for example. To do this, the functionalization of a standard component of buildings, the wallpaper, was studied. The use of frequency selective surface (FSS) was chosen. These patterns are printed directly on paper with a conductive ink printing technology: the flexography. The study also focuses on the realization of innovative filter designs. Simulation results show that these novel FSS are able to filter two or three bands. They are almost insensitive to the polarization and to the angle of incidence in the range of 0° to ±80°. The realization feasibility of this concept in a laboratory or in industrial conditions was demonstrated. Next, an experimental demonstration of this concept in the WiFi bands was carried out. In this context, the transmission coefficient was reached -30 dB. Finally, an experimental validation of the product in real conditions of use was conducted, namely the wallpaper was put over plasterboards or over wood panels. Also, the influence of the glue on the general performances and the placement of a decorative wallpaper over the FSS wallpaper were studied. In conclusion, the practical results obtained confirm and validate the theoretical predictions of this new concept, called metapaper, and show that the practical realizations are efficient enough to allow the reduction of WiFi or GSM signals.
