The utilization of coal is an attractive way to reduce some of the energy problems in Brazil. Major problems associated with coal combustion are polutant emissions, mainly SOx and NOx and ash fusion. Additionally, the efficient combustion of biomass and industrial hazardous wastes, among other fuels, can bring a significant environmental benefit. Fluidized bed combustion is recognized to be flexible in the use of fuel, produce low temperature that avoid ash fusion and reduce NOx emissions, and allow SOx absorption by limestone inside the bed, what makes unnecessary additional gas treatment for this pollutant. Considering that, a fluidized bed combustion pilot plant was projected and built in NETeF at EESC/USP and initially used for investigations of the SO2 absorption by limestone during coal combustion. The concept and construction of the plant are presented and discussed and the results are shown. Regarding the absorption of SO2, two variables were investigated, namely the molar ratio Ca/S and the excess of combustion air. An absorption efficiency of up to 94% was achieved with Ca/S = 4 and excess air of 21%. When Ca/S = 1 was used - what represents the stoichiometric ratio and was the lowest used in this work, this efficiency dropped to 55%. Excess air showed a clear but more modest role. The decrease of excess air from 21% to the stoichiometric condition decreased the efficiency from 94 to 84%.

Desenvolvimento de grânulos de carbamazepina por \'hot melt granulation\' em leito fluidizado / Development of the carbamazepine granules by \"fluidized bed hot melt granulation.Camila Razuk Kfuri 17 September 2008 (has links)
Drugs belonging to classes II and IV in the biopharmaceutical classification system are those having bioavailability problems. Granulation with waxy lipids is one of the procedures used to improve the solubility of poorly soluble drugs. To increase the solubility of carbamazepine a drug of class II that has low solubility but high permeability, its association with the excipients Gelucire® 50/13 or Polyethylene 6000, was done by physical mixtures or solid dispersions. The associations were subjected to analytical procedures such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), infrared light, X-ray diffraction and tests of solubility in water. In physical mixtures carbamazepine remained stable, but showed different polymorphic forms in solid dispersions. However, the polymorphic forms were also therapeutically active.Solubility tests of physical mixtures and solid dispersions indicated that samples containing Gelucire ® 50 / 13 increased the solubility of carbamazepine in water about 15 times, while the ones containing Polyethylene glycol 6000 had an increase of about 14 times. PEG 6000 was the chosen carrier due to its better compatibility with the equipment used.Fluid dynamic tests using spray dried lactose as a substrate were preliminary to the granulation experiments in the fluidised bed. The process conditions remained stable during the experiments and the characteristic curve tracing was typical of fluidised beds. Granules were obtained in experiments that followed a Box Behnken factorial design, where the factors studied were: flow rate of the solid dispersion, amount of solid dispersion and atomization pressure .Most physical and technical granule properties were dependent on the quantity of solid dispersion. The method of granulation by hot melt in a fluidised bed improved the solubility profile of carbamazepine in granule containing capsules.Granules containing the highest amount of solid dispersion showed a significant increase in the amount of carbamazepine released. The results proved that this technique is relevant to the preparation of solid dispersions with low bioavailable drugs due to their poor solubility.

Vibrofluidized Bed Drying Of Citrus Processing Residue For Byproduct RecoveryRoe, Eric A 14 November 2003 (has links)
Approximately 44% of the citrus that is processed becomes processing residue. The residue consists of the non-juice components of a citrus fruit, primarily peel and pulp, and is recovered by conversion to animal feed. The material is hygroscopic, agglomerating, has a wide particle size distribution, and must be carefully dried to avoid thermal damage to nutrients and flavors. This dissertation evaluates the possibility of utilizing a vibrofluidized bed dryer for citrus processing residue. Results demonstrate that it is possible to overcome the agglomeration difficulties associated with this material, offering an economically viable alternative processing methodology.
To properly analyze this proposed system, a benchtop vibrofluidized bed dryer was designed, constructed and instrumented. Vibrofluidization and batch drying trials were conducted and analyzed. An economic evaluation of the proposed process was undertaken. Two mathematical models of the drying process were developed and validated.
Characteristics that describe the vibrofluidized bed drying of the residue were determined. The conditions that facilitated fluidization were: 1) A particle size distribution of the dried residue that was lognormal, had a geometric mean diameter, dgw, of 3.829 mm, and a geometric standard deviation, Sgw, of 2.49x10-07 mm. 2) A vibrational acceleration, Aω2/g, of 2.54. 3) A minimum vibrofluidization velocity, Umvf, of 4.2 cm/s. The controlling mechanism of the falling rate period was determined to be diffusion, with an effective diffusion coefficient, Deff, of 2.85x10-5 cm/s, and critical moisture content, Mc, of 30%. Economic evaluation of the proposed method has a payback period of 4.34 years, and an estimated processing cost of $33 per ton of dried material.
Models were developed based on bed hydrodynamics and three-phase drying kinetics, and thin-layer drying. Both models accurately predicted the drying curves. The three-phase kinetic drying model solved a series of simultaneous equations, and differential equations, based on moisture and enthalpy balances. This complex model successfully predicted the bed hydrodynamic properties and serves to facilitate scale-up, design, and bed configuration investigations. For the thin-layer drying model, the drying constants, K & N, for Page’s equation were determined as a function of bed temperature. This computationally simple, single-parameter model would serve process control algorithms.

Návrh a optimalizace fluidního roštu z hlediska funkčnosti a ekonomiky výroby / Fluid grate design and optimalization in the function aspect point of view and economy of productionVoráč, Petr January 2010 (has links)
The Master´s thesis deals with the fluid layer, with types of fluidized layer and with problems which can be solve during design of new fluidized beds. The aim was find the fluidized grid, which is the best form economical and technological point of view. In this work are compared three fluidized grids. The first was part of submission. Next two additional types were then proposed by the author of thesis. Proposals grids are discussed in detail from the design phase, through the modeling and subsequent simulation part in a computer program. The results of simulation are pressure losses. Which are compared with the recommended interval values. Afterward these tested beds are put through technical and economic analysis. The result is grade which is met both requirements.
