It addresses the history of the Folias from the standpoint of myth and memory, a comprehension of the ritual, and the importance of its narratives and songs. These are fundamental to the myths that sustain and protect the participants and followers, both forming and conserving identities. Methodology included the collection of stories and songs lived and sang by the participants and followers. The theses analyses the sertanejo environment that became first a village and than a city, where the Folias were formed, reinforcing traditional values. It also analyses the constitution of basic myths and the ritualistic parts of the procession; the efficiency of the myths are present in stories and songs (about origins, miracles, punishments and mysteries) told and sung by participants and followers. In addition it details the ritual on January 6 th , the Arrival Day, focusing on Folia Goiana and its particularities in a society in changing process. The myths, kept as memories and shared among people, not only lead to “conservation and dynamic common gestures and habits” but also influence in everyday life, particularly “producing and reproducing social-cultural practices (artistics…) of the participants, beyond time of ritual realization”. / A presente tese trata da história das folias de reis goianas, sob o título de “Milagre e castigo: mito e memória nas folias de reis de Itaguari-GO” – Folia do Brejo Grande, Folia Mineira e Folia Goiana. Aborda a história dessas folias, sob a ótica do mito e da memória, a compreensão de seu ritual e a importância das suas narrativas e cantorias. Estas se fundamentam nos mitos que sustentam e protegem seus foliões e devotos, formadores e conservadores de identidades. Metodologicamente, vale-se da coleta de relatos e cantorias vividos e cantadas por foliões e devotos. Reflete, a tese, sobre o ambiente sertanejo que se tornou povoado e cidade, no qual as folias de reis se formaram, reforçando valores tradicionais da região; as referências teóricas a respeito de mito e memória, a constituição dos mitos basilares e as etapas concernentes ao ritual geral das folias de reis itaguarinas; a eficácia dos mitos do sertão, evidentes no desenrolar dos contos (narrativas de origem, milagres, castigos e mistérios) e das cantorias contados e cantadas por foliões e devotos de Santos Reis; e sobre os detalhes e as implicâncias da festa do dia 06 de janeiro, dia da chegada, concentrando a análise sobre a Folia Goiana, suas particularidades em face à sociedade em processo de espetacularização e os traços identitários que caracterizam as três folias itaguarinas. Mitos das folias de reis, memorizados e compartilhados, não só levam foliões e devotos à “conservação e dinamização dos seus gestos e costumes comuns”, conforme anunciado em hipótese: influenciam a sociedade no seu cotidiano e, particularmente, “na produção e reprodução de práticas sócio-culturais (artísticas...) de quem delas participa, para além do tempo de execução do seu ritual”.

Inserting within the field of cultural manifestations of Brazilian popular Catholicism, are characterized by joining religious elements, musical, theatrical and plastics. Among the Brazilian states that have the Folias Kings as a living expression of their culture, stands out in this study a reality of the state of Minas Gerais. This work addressed in a specific way the Serra dos Barbosa community, located in the countryside of Leopoldina, which is included in the Forest Zone East of Minas Gerais. This region is an expressive representation of Folias Kings in the state. In this universe, there was a ethnomusicological study of the manifestation of the Folia de Reis da Serra, aiming to present and analyze the key factors which shape and give meaning to the musical performance of this revelry, and these elements tradition, religion and belonging. Through this study it was concluded that the performance of revelry da Serra is characterized by religious-musical aspects that are configured by the addition of music to wider cultural dimensions, including the worldviews and the ethos of the people involved, the social perspectives and the relations surrounding the demonstration. It also covers the rite structures, tradition and own religiosity of the rural community, the "foundation" of revelry and finally the membership of this community to this sound-ritual manifestation. The music of revelry in this universe, incorporates aspects of social relations established among the revelers and assistance in the process of performance. Faith and devotion to the Three Kings of the East explained in musical moments within the sacred universe determine the specific performance evidenced in "snippets" in the "tunes", body movements, and the relationship between performance and the sacred objects and consecrated that makes up the symbolic universe of Folia da Serra. Characteristics, associated with traditional conceptions of a demonstration that preserves significant aspects of their original identities shape the world of Folia de Reis da Serra, cultural context where the revelry performs, ritualized and renews its manifestation in the present. The tradition in which the revelry is inserted, the "foundation" of revelry, the lived religion and the people belonging to this event, determine the particularities of their musical performance and are essential for the existence of revelry and the way in which these people think, feel and live in the world. / As Folias de Reis constituem uma das importantes manifestações culturais presentes no Brasil. Inserindo-se dentro do campo das manifestações culturais do catolicismo popular brasileiro, são caracterizadas pela junção de elementos religiosos, musicais, cênicos e plásticos. Dentre os estados brasileiros que possuem as Folias de Reis como expressão viva de sua cultura, destaca-se neste estudo uma realidade do estado de Minas Gerais. Este trabalho abordou de maneira específica a comunidade Serra dos Barbosa, localizada na zona rural de Leopoldina, que se insere na Zona da Mata Leste de Minas Gerais. Nesse universo, foi realizado um estudo etnomusicológico da manifestação da Folia de Reis da Serra, tendo como objetivo apresentar e analisar os elementos centrais que dão forma e sentido à performance musical desta folia, sendo esses elementos a tradição, a religiosidade e o pertencimento. Através deste estudo foi possível concluir que a performance da folia da Serra é caracterizada por aspectos religioso-musicais que se configuram pela junção da música a dimensões culturais mais amplas, incluindo-se as visões de mundo e o ethos das pessoas envolvidas, as perspectivas sociais e as relações estabelecidas entorno à manifestação. Abrange também as estruturas do rito, a tradição e religiosidade próprios da comunidade rural, o “fundamento” da folia e finalmente o pertencimento desta comunidade a essa manifestação sonoro-ritual. A música da folia nesse universo, incorpora aspectos associados às relações sociais estabelecidas entre os foliões e a assistência em seu processo de performance. A fé e a devoção aos Três Reis do Oriente explicitadas nos momentos musicais dentro do universo sagrado determinam especificidades na performance evidenciadas nos “trechos”, nas “toadas”, nos movimentos corporais, bem como na relação entre a performance e os objetos sagrados e consagrados que compõe o universo simbólico da Folia da Serra . Características próprias, associadas às concepções tradicionais de uma manifestação que preserva aspectos significativos de suas identidades originárias dão forma ao universo da Folia de Reis da Serra, contexto cultural onde a folia realiza, ritualiza e reatualiza a sua manifestação no presente. A tradição na qual a folia se insere, seu “fundamento”, a religiosidade vivenciada e o pertencimento das pessoas a essa manifestação, determinam as particularidades de sua performance musical e são primordiais para a existência da folia e para o modo com que essas pessoas pensam, sentem e vivem no mundo.

A Folia de Reis é uma festa popular presente em várias regiões do Brasil desde a época da colonização brasileira, com variações regionais e transformando-se através dos tempos. Esta pesquisa investigou a ocorrência desse recurso cultural em São José do Barreiro, cidade do interior paulista, onde ela acontece há mais de 90 anos, sem interrupções. Inserida no contexto da religiosidade popular brasileira, esta manifestação cultural traz em seu seio as várias características do povo brasileiro, expressas em seus diversos símbolos e nas relações entre devotos-foliões e comunidade. Recebendo diversas influências ao longo dos anos e recriando-se constantemente, não perdeu seu sentido principal, a de manifestar a sua fé através de rituais que incluem diversas expressões (musicais, dramáticas e plásticas), constituindo-se, assim, um importante recurso cultural que deve ser salvaguardado, não só pelos órgãos governamentais, mas também pela comunidade local, verdadeira detentora do saber e da qual depende a efetiva prática da transmissão para as futuras gerações. Neste trabalho foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica exploratória, buscando-se um referencial teórico para a compreensão e elucidação dos fatos sem desprezar o registro da memória coletiva obtida através de entrevistas abertas realizadas com os detentores da festa. / The Folia de Reis is a popular festival present in many regions of Brazil since the time of colonization of Brazil, with regional variations and turning through the ages. This research investigated the occurrence of this cultural resource in São José do Barreiro city in São Paulo state, where it happens for more than 90 years without interruption. Set in the context of Brazilian popular religiosity, this cultural event brings in its bosom the various features of the Brazilian people, expressed in its various symbols and relationships between devotees, revelers, and community. Receiving various influences over the years and constantly re-inventing itself, has not lost its primary sense, to express their faith through rituals that include various expressions (musical, dramatic and plastic), thus constituting an important cultural resource that must be protected, not only by government, but also by the local community, which holds true of knowledge and of which depends on the effective practice of transmission to future generations. In this paper an exploratory literature search was conducted, seeking a theoretical framework for understanding and elucidating the facts without neglecting the record of collective memory obtained through open interviews with the holders of the party.
