A study of Loneliness Factors of Foreign Workers in Taiwan:The Mediating Effects of Social SupportWu, Ya-Hui 28 July 2004 (has links)
The study has investigated the loneliness facts influencing the foreign workers in Taiwan, and has discovered the relationship between loneliness and the mediating effects of social support by demographic variables. The target of the study were foreign workers who had came from Thailand, Vietname, and the Philippines. The questionnaires were collected by a hospital and there were 725 valid returns within 35.55% married samples and 64.45% single samples. Using hierarchical regression and path analysis to test the mediating effects of social support, the findings are: 1. work support and health care support were mediating effective for loneliness; 2. native country contact support have direct effects, but the most significant effect was by group support. Regarding the implementation of foreign worker management, it can enforce the already lacking work and health care support of the foreign workers might reduce the negative effect of loneliness, and thus improves the heart, mind and healthy of these workers.

With the takeoff economy in 1980¡¦s, which we call ¡§the era of economy miracle¡¨, many working opportunities boomed at that time in Taiwan. Plus the prevalent education and the low birth rate has stagnated the growth of labors which resulted in more and more mid-sized companies feel the shortage of labor force. In view of those factors, government has approved importing foreign workers for the first time in the year of 1989.
Since those foreign workers come from different countries where cultures have dissimilarities from those in Taiwan, while managing those workers, different cultural backgrounds, religions, values and customs need to be taken into account.
The purpose of this paper is to study foreign worker management under national cultural dimensional perspective. The respondents are Taiwanese and Filipino entry level workers from ASE (Advanced semiconductor Engineering Group), the world's largest provider of independent semiconductor manufacturing services in assembly and test. located in NEPZ (Nantze Economic Processing Zone). The research methodology I used is a re-fined paper questionnaire based on Hofstede¡¦s international attitude survey which was revised by Lu Long-Chuan to incorporate a much more suitable questions for industries,
From the results, we know that different management should be applied to foreign workers who have different cultures from Taiwanese. Filipino workers have higher mean on ¡§Power distance¡¨, ¡§Masculinity¡¨, and ¡§Individualism¡¨, and Taiwanese workers have higher mean on ¡§Uncertainty avoidance¡¨ and ¡§Long term orientation¡¨. The higher mean, the higher inclination to each dimension. By incorporating those dimension inclinations with living management and working management, plus the interviews, I came up with improved management for employers¡¦ references.

The thesis deals with the illegal employment of the third countries' foreigners in the Czech Republic. Since foreign labor migration is a subject set by the legislation, the thesis introduces the development of labor migration in the setting of policy and foreign employment in terms of institutional and legal framework. Another part is based on interviews I conducted with employers, strangers, staff offices and experts. Due to the persistent illegal labor supply and demand, I focused on the motives that lead employers and foreigners to apply that kind of illegal employment. Themes, however, cause a number of consequences, so I focused on the consequences that affect not only migrants themselves but also the state.The next part of my thesis deals with the individual groups of respondents. I focused on setting the current employment system and on the labor market conditions from the sight of addressed respondents. In conclusion, I point out the possible solutions to the mentioned problems in order to reduce the illegal employment of foreigners.

‘WILL WORK FOR FOOD’: Canada’s Agricultural Industry and the Recruitment of South East Asian Temporary Migrant WorkersZiesman, Alia 17 May 2013 (has links)
As of fairly recently, migrant workers from South East Asia are migrating to Canada for work in the agricultural industry. Little research has been conducted on migration routes and recruitment patterns of these migrant workers. Interviews with 13 workers and three support workers were conducted between May and July 2011 to learn about this process; specifically with how these individuals are getting to Canada, and how they maintain (or do not maintain) relationships with the private intermediaries and employment agencies that facilitate this movement. This research will fill a gap in the literature by describing the recruitment processes of ‘low-skilled’ workers into Canada and, more importantly, it will provide a much-needed space for South East Asian migrants to share their experiences about working in Canada.

This thesis uses worldview conflict theory to examine an unsuccessful lobbying campaign of the Coalition for Change for Caregivers and Temporary Foreign Workers. Using Nudler (1990, 1993), Blechman, Crocker, Docherty, and Garon (2000) and Docherty (1996, 2001), a worldview conflict analysis was developed and applied to the campaign. This research addresses two questions: 1) Is communication between the parties being impeded by the negotiation of reality? 2) Could the application of a worldview conflict analysis show the parties a way to communicate without negotiating reality? Data collected from publically available documents (Coalition, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and Minister of Human Resources and Skill Development Canada) were analyzed using content analysis, Lakoff and Johnson's (1980) metaphor analysis, and worldview conflict analysis. Similarities between the parties’ worldviews (regarding what is valuable, construction and structure of the world, and enforcement of ethic) indicated ways they could communicate without negotiating reality. / Graduate

這項工作被劃分成數個章節,從一般到特殊。第一,解釋的目的和方法;第二,一個文學評論;第三和第四,分析意大利和台灣的情況;而最後兩章進行比較並得出結論。採用的方法是內容分析和歷史背景,利用定量和定性數據:前者是從初級和次級來源提取,從非結構化的與移民社區和移民機關面談。從這個研究的結果,很明顯,這兩個國家在他們各自的社會和經濟結構的變化都有不同的反應:緊急立法是比較典型的意大利決策,而規劃則是台灣的特徵。在這兩種情況下,國際政治都在影響政策的形成扮演了重要的角色:義大利作為一個已建立的超國家的一部分,歐盟,在立法上允許更多的授權;同時台灣在外交孤立與不安的兩岸關係上,則不得不更謹慎的規劃。 / Italy and Taiwan share common problems typical of mature economies: an aging population, a low fertility rate and a chronic labour shortage, which all combined have prompted the importation of foreign workers into their systems. The present research is an attempt to find out how the two countries – both latecomers in mass immigration – have coped with this new phenomenon, by analysing their respective immigration policy formations to uncover confluences and disparities that can be attributed to different economic, political and social circumstances. The work is divided in chapters that elaborate from the general to the particular. The first one explains purpose and methodology; the second one is a literary review; the third and fourth ones analyse the cases of Italy and Taiwan; and the final two chapters make comparisons and draw conclusions. The methods adopted are content analysis and historical background, making use of quantitative and qualitative data: the former are extracted from primary and secondary sources, the latter from unstructured interviews with migrant communities and authorities. From the results of this research, it is apparent that the two countries have responded differently to their respective social and economic structural changes: emergency legislation was more typical of the Italian policy-making, while planning characterised the Taiwanese attitude. In both cases international politics has played a major role in shaping policy formation: being part of an established supra-national formation such the EU allowed for more deferring and delegating in legislation; while being diplomatically isolated with a troubled cross-strait relationship compelled to a more cautious programming.

The role and regulation of private, for-profit employment agencies in the British Columbia labour market and the recruitment of temporary foreign workersParrott, Daniel 18 August 2011 (has links)
My thesis examines the role and regulation of private, for-profit employment agencies in the British Columbia labour market with respect to the recruitment of temporary foreign workers. In it, I reviewed the historical origins of employment agency legislation in Canada. I go on to describe Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program in connection with the transfer of federal immigration authority to the provinces. I also present a case study demonstrating how temporary foreign workers are recruited for the Live-in Caregiver Program in British Columbia, and use the study as a basis for comparing British Columbia’s employment agency legislation with the agency licensing regimes in the other Western Provinces. I conclude that Manitoba’s recent Worker Recruitment and Protection Act frames a best practice model for the protection of foreign workers during the recruitment process, and I encourage other provinces like British Columbia to develop and legislatively frame a similar set of best practices. / Graduate

Why do temporary foreign workers employed in the British Columbia hospitality sector have difficulty enforcing their workplace rights? Using the themes of people, place and time, this thesis explores the demand and supply of migrant workers in the British Columbia hospitality sector, and the challenges temporary foreign workers face at the intersection of immigration law, employment law, occupational health and safety law, and workers’ compensation law. The thesis argues that the low-skilled Temporary Foreign Worker Program shifts the negative consequences of unfair working conditions and workplace health and safety risks over people, place and time: from Canadian workers and employers onto temporary foreign workers; from Canada to elsewhere; and from the present into the future. Workplace rights are not enough for hospitality sector workers, what is needed is better tools for the enforcement of those rights. / Graduate
