The Impact of Technology on Community College Students’ Success in Remedial/Developmental Mathematics

Bendickson, Mary M 25 June 2004 (has links)
Increased institutional accountability and fiscal constraints coupled with most community college students being required to take at least one remedial/developmental course indicates a need to find the best way to deliver these classes. Institutions are expanding alternate delivery formats to meet student expectations. Is using technology best for students in remedial/developmental courses? This study investigated effectiveness of technology-assisted instruction for remedial/developmental math in Florida community colleges. Technology has emerged as potentially enhancing student success; however, it is expensive. If research shows that students benefit from technology in remedial/developmental courses, then funds spent to provide instruction through technology are validated. However, if research does not show remedial/developmental courses with a technology component are more effective than courses delivered traditionally, then spending funds for technology in those courses becomes questionable. The research questions for this study asked whether the delivery format of gatekeeper remedial/developmental math courses varied by institutional size. Was there a relationship between student success and technology-assisted delivery of "gatekeeper" remedial/developmental math classes? The study asked if such a relationship existed when controlling for placement test scores. To answer these questions, the research compared student success rates in three delivery formats--traditional, hybrid, and computer-based. Results showed that small institutions favored traditional delivery of remedial/ developmental math. Medium institutions offered traditional and hybrid delivery in similar proportions while larger institutions favored hybrid delivery. Results also showed that students in traditional delivery sections were likely to be just as successful, or slightly more successful, than students in hybrid and computer-based delivery courses, Students with higher placement test scores in remedial/developmental math were clearly more successful in courses delivered via traditional instruction. Implications from this study suggest that the introduction of a technology component to remedial/developmental math courses does not seem to be more effective in helping students successfully pass remedial/developmental math classes. If an institution does not have funds to invest in technology for remedial/developmental math students, which may be especially true for smaller institutions, no harm is done in delivering instruction in remedial/developmental math via traditional methods. Students may actually benefit from the traditional delivery format in remedial/developmental math courses.

Baffioni, Stéphanie 30 April 2003 (has links) (PDF)

Abdul Ghafour, Samer 09 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)

The Extendable Guideline for Analysing Malicious PDF Documents

Sjöholm, Peter January 2013 (has links)
Today, the average computer user has undoubtedly encountered the PDF format while handling electronic documents. Due to its wide-spread popularity and feature richness, PDF documents are commonly utilized by attackers in order to infect systems with malware. This thesis will present The Extendable Guideline for Analysing Malicious PDF Documents. This work will establish the foundation of the guideline and populate it with a part of the analysis process. The guideline relies on earlier published material in the topic. It is a practical guideline that is followed by the use of a flowchart and can be utilized by an analyst in order to determine if a PDF document is malicious or not. It provides technical background information, suitable analysis techniques, and tools. The guideline structure was developed by using sequential thinking in combination with the divide and conquer paradigm. The thesis will also elucidate commonly applied techniques that are used by malicious PDF authors in order to infect systems, evade detection, and distribute their malicious documents. A commonly utilized function in PDF documents are the JavaScript feature. There are a wide range of other features that are targeted by malicious PDF authors, but they are more rarely encountered. PDF documents are often distributed by attackers by sending them as an attachment in an email, or storing the document on a web server.

APSK Transmission Experiment with Homodyne Receiver Using Carrier Phase Recovery

Kung, Hui-Hsuan 28 June 2011 (has links)
In the current transmission systems, the transmission capacity is still not enough. The information bandwidth of the optical fiber communication system is limited by the optical amplifier bandwidth, and more efficient use of the bandwidth is a very important issue. Therefore, the amplitude and phase shift keying (APSK) is one attractive method of multi-bit per symbol modulation scheme to improve the spectral efficiency, and it can effectively increase the transmission capacity. To improve the capacity and the spectral efficiency, the advanced modulation format is effective, and the coherent detection scheme is also effective. However, an optical phase-locked loop (PLL) to lock the local oscillator (LO) phase and the signal phase required for the homodyne detection is still difficult to realize and it makes the receiver circuit complicated. Using the digital coherent receiver, the optical carrier phase information can be recovered by means of the digital signal processing (DSP), and this scheme enables to eliminate the optical PLL circuit by the phase estimation algorithm through the DSP. The stored data can be offline processed by using the MATLAB program. This master thesis is focusing on studying the transmission performance of the APSK format using the DSP in the digital coherent receiver. 497km transmission experiment has been conducted. Subsequently, the stored data are offline processed by the algorithms of the DSP. Then, the APSK performances between back-to-back and 497km transmission are compared.

The Format As An Iron Cage: Writing In Sociology And Anthropology

Alpar, Danende Z. 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyzes the prevailing formats of writing in sociology or anthropology that are considered scientific. For whom are sociology and anthropology texts written, and who are the readers of these texts? How does this format of writing that constitutes a text as scientific influence the text-reader relationship? In discussing this, the legitimate ways of writing of sociology and anthropology are presented together with what scientificity brings. the reflexive critique that looks at sociology and anthropology with the very methods of these disciplines is explained in its main lines. within this debate, the importance of the question &quot / whom the texts produced in these sciences are intended for?&quot / is analyzed. This is followed by a discussion of the conditions that enabled the constitution of the conventional forms of expression in sciences. The concept of paradigm as proposed by Thomas Kuhn is used to explain the formation of these conditions.

Computer Adaptive Rating Scales (CARS) for the Employment Interview

Schmidt, Greg F 01 January 2011 (has links)
This research investigates the effectiveness of computerized adaptive rating scales (CARS) in comparison to the relatively more common behavioral anchored ratings scales (BARS) format. The current study sought to extend the body of psychometric research of CARS while investigating its potential for use in the employment interview. Using 43 videotaped interviews and supervisor job performance ratings, and constructing a new task-performance based CARS, it was hypothesized that employment interview ratings produced using the CARS format would yield significantly higher predictive validity coefficients than those produced by the BARS format. Results showed that while interview ratings produced in the CARS format were predictive of supervisor job performance ratings, they were not significantly higher than ratings in the BARS format. Academic and applied implications are discussed.
