As a consequence of the Military Coup of 1964, he joined the group of the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), from where it departed to found and direct the Centre of Estudies for Contemporary Culture (CEDEC). The new Center was characterized by a preoccupation with issues pertaining to grassroots social movements and within the CEDEC, Weffort passed simultaneously to collaborate in the founding of the Workers Party (PT). The pretension of the new party was to break with party exists, it would be composed of trade unionists and supporters of social and labor issues in general. For nearly 15 years, from 1980 to 1994, Weffort was secretary general of the PT, but in the presidential elections of 1994, after attending the candidacy of Lula, ended up supporting the victory of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, was invited to occupy the position of Minister of Culture of his new government. Our main goal in this paper is to trace the path Francisco Weffort as an intellectual, trying to rescue his theories in his criticism of the tangent to the popular national heritage, it was from this line of studies that the author built his assumptions to address the issue of democracy in Brazil. When we look back at his intellectual production performed in the period 1964 to 1984 we are able to gain greater understanding of their future policy choices, as is also thrown light on the entire period that preceded the democratization process in Brazil
