Althawab, Meshal, Eberhard, Jared, Hernandez, Alan, Manos, John, Patel, Aniket, Tavour, Alex, von Oppenfeld, Christian 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2013 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Ninth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 21-24, 2013 / Bally's Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV / A prototype wireless power transfer system using the near field to transfer energy between resonantly tuned coils, in order to charge a cell phone or other small electronic device. The system uses resonance to ensure maximum wireless power transfer efficiency between the two coils, and gain greater flexibility in distance between the two coils. The frequency of power transfer is in the unregulated 6.78MHz ISM band. The system is monitored and controlled by an Arduino, and shuts off power when the system does not detect a load.

Low phase noise cylindrical cavity oscillator

Maree, Jacques 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of this thesis is to develop a 9.2 GHz low phase noise oscillator with a cylindrical cavity resonator. A cylindrical metal cavity with air as dielectric was used as a resonator. To minimise the phase noise of the oscillator, the resonator must be designed to have a high Q-factor. A high Q-factor was obtained by designing the resonator to operate in the TE011 mode. A tuning screw was used to tune the resonant frequency without significantly affecting the Q-factor. The tuning screw also separates the resonant frequencies of the degenerate TE011 and TM111 modes. The signal is coupled to the resonator by means of rectangular apertures. The coupling was designed to minimise the phase noise of the oscillator. A dual mode waveguide filter was developed and inserted into the oscillator loop in order to prevent oscillation at unwanted frequencies. Due to the excellent phase noise performance of the oscillator, it was not possible to measure the phase noise directly with the available phase noise meter. A measurement setup using two similar oscillators tuned to oscillate at frequencies differing by about 60 MHz was implemented. The output signals were down-converted to the difference frequency where the phase noise could be measured accurately. The output signal of the oscillator was measured at different locations in the loop and clearly showed that the resonator can be used as a filter to minimise the phase noise. The performance of the oscillators met all expectations. Phase noise levels of -115 dBc/Hz and -146 dBc/Hz were obtained at offset frequencies of 10 and 100 kHz.

Investigating Pattern Recognition And Bi-coordinate Sound Localization in the Tree Cricket Species Oecanthus Henryi

Bhattacharya, Monisha January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Acoustic communication, used by a wide variety of animals, consists of the signaler, the signal and the receiver. A change in the behaviour of the receiver after reception of the signal is a prerequisite for communication. A response to the signal by the receiver depends on signal recognition and localization of the signal source. These two aspects, namely recognition and localization by the receiver, form the main body of my work. In the mating system of crickets, the males produce advertisement calls to attract silent females to mate. Females need to recognize the conspecific call and localize the male. The tree cricket Oecanthus henryi, due to aspects of its physiology and the environment it inhabits, generates interesting problems concerning these seemingly simple tasks of recognition and localization. In crickets, usually a species-specific sender-receiver match for the call features exists, which aids in recognition. A change in the call carrier frequency with temperature, due to poikilothermy, as seen in O. henryi, may pose a problem for this sender-receiver match. To circumvent this, either the response should shift concomitantly with the change in the feature (narrow tuning) or the response should encompass the entire variation of the feature (broad tuning). I explored the response of O. henryi females to the changing nature of call carrier frequency with temperature. The results showed that O. henryi females are broadly tuned to call carrier frequency. Being broadly tuned I next wanted to explore if within the natural variation in carrier frequency, the females were able to discriminate between frequencies. Females were found not to discriminate between frequencies. Cricket ears being pressure difference receivers are inherently directional, however their directionality is dependent on frequency, which may be affected by the change in carrier frequency due to temperature. Thus I also tested the effect of frequency on the azimuthal localization accuracy. The azimuthal accuracy was not affected by call carrier frequency within the natural range of frequency variability of the species. In south India, O. henryi is found in sympatry with Oecanthus indicus. Reproductive isolation between the two is maintained through calls. Since O. henryi is broadly tuned to frequency, call carrier frequency is unlikely to enable differentiation between conspecific and heterospecific calls. I thus tested whether the temporal features can account for the same. I constructed a quantitative multivariate model of response space of O. henryi incorporating results from various playback experiments. The model predicted high responses for conspecific calls and low responses for heterospecific calls, indicating that temporal features could suffice to discriminate between the two species. The quantitative model could also be used more generally to check responses to other heterospecifics and to compare responses between conspecifics from different populations. O. henryi is found on a bush and thus the female has to navigate in a 3D environment to localize the singing male. Very few studies have explored 3D localization in insects and moreover an algorithm explaining the procedure is missing. I attempted to model the 3D localization capability in O. henryi. To understand the rules behind the localization animals were observed in the wild as well as on a 3D grid in the laboratory and simulations were created to capture the nature of the phonotaxis. Neither a random model nor a deterministic model (which estimated the shortest path) could predict the paths observed in the grid. A less complex Bayesian stochastic model performed better than a more complex one. From the assumptions of the model it was inferred that the animal, for 3D localization, basically performs localization in the azimuthal plane and combines certain simple rules to go up or down. This study has examined receiver tuning in response to change in carrier frequency with temperature, which to my knowledge had not been explored before for insects. In this study I also attempted to create a quantitative multivariate receiver response space through statistical modeling, a method that can be applied in similar studies across taxa in various acoustic communication systems. A detailed Bayesian algorithm to explain 3D localization for an insect was attempted which has also not been attempted before.

Étude théorique et expérimentale d’un nouveau concept d’antenne VHF miniature et accordable par décharge plasma / Theoretical and experimental study of a new miniature and tunable VHF antenna using plasma discharge

Laquerbe, Vincent 12 December 2017 (has links)
Antenna miniaturisation is a major issue, especially in the VHF band whose wavelengths are significant. Amongst the solution in the litterature, a recent theoretical technique relies upon the electrostatic resonance of negative permittivity (ENG) subwavelength spheres. In this work, the use of a plasma discharge as ENG medium is under consideration. Plasma indeed suggests new potentialities for this kind of small antennas, such as stealth and frequency agility. Firstly, several analytical models are developed to study the electromagnetic response of subwavelength realistic plasma spheres. These models further allow to derive accurate numerical representations that fit commercial electromagnetic solvers. A working prototype that comprises a plasma ignition system within the antenna structure without altering its operation is then designed. It is used to both characterize the plasma discharge and the electromagnetic behavior of the plasma spherical resonator. Finally, this work is extended to the case of planar circuits by integrating a plasma discharge inside microstrip resonators. The design, the modeling and the experimental studies of these resonators highlight the ability of the plasma to tune the resonant frequency.

Développement d'un micro-dispositif intègre pour le contrôle de la fréquence de résonance d'une antenne à haute sensibilité pour l'IRM / Development of a micro-device to control the resonance frequency of a small high - sensitivity coil for MRI

Guisiano, Jean-clément 27 September 2011 (has links)
The use of miniature transmission lines coils, in the study of diseases in humans or small animals, has allowed for significant improvements in Micro Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The high sensitivity of such coils combined with their small size, however, leads to critical problems in treating and conditioning the detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) signal. In particular, the adjustment of the resonant frequency of these detection coils, during a MRI experiment, cannot be achieved using reported components, as is the case of conventional MRI coils, in order not to degrade their performances. We have developed two original tuning techniques for such coils. These techniques are based on the micrometric displacement of a tuning element near the coil surface, which modifies the electromagnetic environment of the coil by coupling, resulting in a change of the resonant frequency. The obtained results have enabled the design and construction of a micro-displacement device responsible for the fine tuning of the coil, through the displacement of a tuning element. The tuned coil and micro-device have been implemented in a 4.7 T MRI. Sample images were obtained and validated, showing the relevance and feasibility of using an auto-tuning resonant system, dedicated to high sensitivity MRI.

Tunable Millimeter-wave devices using micro-mechanical and micro-fluidic reconfiguration mechanisms : design, fabrication, measurement

Dufour, Gaëtan 20 June 2017 (has links)
As wireless networks evolve, the frequency bands they exploit multiply. Frequency multiplexing, beamforming and tracking, networks interoperability, those mutations increase the need for agility and tunability in the RF-front end systems. In this thesis, two innovative approaches for the design of tunable RF components are studied. First, a micro-mechanical reconfiguration mechanism is developed. This approach means to control the height of an air gap within the substrate of microstrip components in order to control their electrical dimensions. Considerations for the design and fabrication of a phase-shifter and a frequency tunable patch antenna are made and a low voltage piezoelectric actuation (+/- 30 V) is chosen. The phase-shifter figure of merit reaches up to 312 °/dB which is beyond the state of the art in terms of analogic phase-shifting. Regarding the antenna, the frequency tuning potentially reaches up to 35 \% of a central frequency of 55 GHz. Unlike the classic solidstate or RF-MEMS based solutions, this reconfiguration mechanism does not impact the radiation performance of the antenna whose radiation efficiency is 94 \%. In a second approach, a micro-fluidic solution is studied. Frequency tuning capability is created in different antennas by the flow of successive liquids with different permittivities in integrated micro-channels. A large frequency tuning of 51 \% for a central frequency of 22 GHz is achieved. This study goes along with the search and characterization of several fluids with the objective of increasing both the frequency shift and the radiation performance of those antennas

Ultra-Wideband Imaging System For Medical Applications. Simulation models and Experimental Investigations for Early Breast Cancer & Bone Fracture Detection Using UWB Microwave Sensors

Mirza, Ahmed F. January 2019 (has links)
Near field imaging using microwaves in medical applications is of great current interest for its capability and accuracy in identifying features of interest, in comparison with other known screening tools. Many imaging methods have been developed over the past two decades showing the potential of microwave imaging in medical applications such as early breast cancer detection, analysis of cardiac tissues, soft tissues and bones. Microwave imaging uses non-ionizing ultra wideband (UWB) electromagnetic signals and utilises tissue-dependent dielectric contrast to reconstruct signals and images using radar-based or tomographic imaging techniques. Microwave imaging offers low health risk, low operational cost, ease of use and user-friendliness. This study documents microwave imaging experiments for early breast cancer detection and bone fracture detection using radar approach. An actively tuned UWB patch antenna and a UWB Vivaldi antenna are designed and utilised as sensing elements in the aforementioned applications. Both UWB antennas were developed over a range of frequency spectrum, and then characteristics were tested against their ability for microwave imaging applications by reconstructing the 3D Inversion Algorithm. An experiment was conducted using patch antenna to test the detection of variable sizes of cancer tissues based on a simple phantom consisting of a plastic container with a low dielectric material emulating fatty tissue and high dielectric constant object emulating a tumour, is scanned between 4 to 8 GHz with the patch antenna. A 2-D image of the tumour is constructed using the reflected signal response to visualize the location and size of the tumour. A Vivaldi antenna is designed covering 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. The antenna is tested via simulation for detecting bone fractures of various sizes and 2-D images are generated using reflected pulses to show the size of fracture. The Vivaldi antenna is optimised for early breast cancer detection and detailed simulated study is carried out using different breast phantoms and tumour sizes. Simulations are backed with the experimental investigation with the test setup used for patch antenna. Generated images for simulations and experimental investigation show good agreement, and show the presence of tumour with good location accuracy. Measurements indicate that both prototype microwave sensors are good candidates for tested imaging applications.

Frequenzselektive Vibrationssensoren mit spannungsgesteuerter Resonanzabstimmung in Oberflächenmikromechanik / Frequency-Selective Vibration Sensors with Voltage-Controlled Resonance Tuning Fabricated Using Surface Microtechnology

Wibbeler, Jürgen 27 October 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Basic resonator structures for frequency-selective capacitive vibration sensors which exploit their mechanical resonance peak for spectral selectivity are developed and analyzed. As an important capability, the stuctures offer voltage-controlled frequency tuning realized by electrostatic principles. Direct electrostatic tuning based on displacement-dependent electrostatic forces as well as tuning by stress-stiffening based on constant electrostatic forces are discussed. The sensor structures are designed for fabrication using common silicon surface microtechnologies. Experimental tests of both mentioned tuning principles are carried out at structures fabricated using a surface technology known as SCREAM. A considerable part of the work focusses on nonlinear oscillations of the mechanical resonator at large amplitudes arising in resonance. Dimensioning rules for minimum nonlinear disturbance are derived from a detailed analysis of the Duffing oscillator. Various capacitive principles for signal detection and electrostatic frequency tuning are evaluated in terms of nonlinearity. A novel type of specially shaped electrode systems offering linear properties within an amplitude range of 10 micrometers, so-called curved comb capacitors, is developed for fabrication in SCREAM technology.

High performance continuous-time filters for information transfer systems

Mohieldin, Ahmed Nader 30 September 2004 (has links)
Vast attention has been paid to active continuous-time filters over the years. Thus as the cheap, readily available integrated circuit OpAmps replaced their discrete circuit versions, it became feasible to consider active-RC filter circuits using large numbers of OpAmps. Similarly the development of integrated operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) led to new filter configurations. This gave rise to OTA-C filters, using only active devices and capacitors, making it more suitable for integration. The demands on filter circuits have become ever more stringent as the world of electronics and communications has advanced. In addition, the continuing increase in the operating frequencies of modern circuits and systems increases the need for active filters that can perform at these higher frequencies; an area where the LC active filter emerges. What mainly limits the performance of an analog circuit are the non-idealities of the used building blocks and the circuit architecture. This research concentrates on the design issues of high frequency continuous-time integrated filters. Several novel circuit building blocks are introduced. A novel pseudo-differential fully balanced fully symmetric CMOS OTA architecture with inherent common-mode detection is proposed. Through judicious arrangement, the common-mode feedback circuit can be economically implemented. On the level of system architectures, a novel filter low-voltage 4th order RF bandpass filter structure based on emulation of two magnetically coupled resonators is presented. A unique feature of the proposed architecture is using electric coupling to emulate the effect of the coupled-inductors, thus providing bandwidth tuning with small passband ripple. As part of a direct conversion dual-mode 802.11b/Bluetooth receiver, a BiCMOS 5th order low-pass channel selection filter is designed. The filter operated from a single 2.5V supply and achieves a 76dB of out-of-band SFDR. A digital automatic tuning system is also implemented to account for process and temperature variations. As part of a Bluetooth transmitter, a low-power quadrature direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) is presented. Piecewise linear approximation is used to avoid using a ROM look-up table to store the sine values in a conventional DDFS. Significant saving in power consumption, due to the elimination of the ROM, renders the design more suitable for portable wireless communication applications.

Schaufuß, Jörg 03 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In this work the development of a kinetic energy harvester using the electrostatic conversion principle is presented. The silicon microstructure is designed to work in frequency ranges below 100Hz. Its toothed electrode structure enables gap distances in the sub micrometer range and consequently high changes of capacitance. Additionally, due to the electrode geometry the frequency of the capacitance changes is higher then the frequency of the mechanical movement. Thus high power outputs and low source impedances can be reached. The electrodes geometric parameters were optimized considering manufacturing tolerances and interactions of the parameters. To reach a sufficient inertial mass, a lever mechanism manufactured by precision engineering was connected to the microstructure. This mechanism also allows the implementation of a new method of frequency tuning. In experimental tests power outputs in the single digit microwatt range under excitations of 0.3 m/s² were reached. In accordance of further optimizations of the manufacturing technology significantly higher outputs, by at least two orders of magnitude, are possible,. Furthermore an energy management system is presented, that allows the efficient transfer of the electrical energy to the consumer.
