Study of mechanical behavior of metallic glasses Mg-Cu-Y using nano-indenter

Wang, Wei-Jhe 07 August 2008 (has links)
The mechanical properties of the amorphous bulk metallic glassy (BMG) alloy, Mg58Cu31Y11, are examined by a non-traditional analytic method - nanoindentation scratch test. This thesis will discuss the influences of friction force, and fracture surface geometry on the BMG surface for load, depth of scratch, scratch velocity, and test temperature of the nano-scratch process. In this study, experimental factors, including load, depth of scratch, scratch velocity, and test temperature, are taken into consideration to investigate the effects of the friction force. And then, this research utilizes regression analysis to establish BMG machining experience formula. The significant parameters of the friction force on nano-scratch and the reliability of the prediction model are investigated by statistical software. According to the results, the friction force is nearly proportional to power of the load. The friction force exhibits a slightly dependence on the test temperature. Besides, the nano-scratch results show that the friction coefficient also increases as the load and test temperature increases. The results associated with the analysis of the variance can be practiced to assess the prominence among experimental factors. The analysis indicates that the load, test temperature play significant factors on the friction force. The results of the regression analysis using a statistical software can be applied to model the mathematical relationship between machining factors and friction force. It anticipates that the model is able to predict friction force over a wide variety of scratching conditions. The model is also proved in good agreement with experimental results.

Exposição dos bráquetes ao meio bucal durante o tratamento ortodôntico e seu impacto no atrito / Intra-oral aging of orthodontic brackets and its impact on friction

Cury, Sérgio Elias Neves 09 April 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in bracket slots after clinical use and their impact on friction force. Optimalizace tvaru strojních součástí s vlivem variabililty vstupních údajů / Shape Optimization of the Machine Components due to Variability of Input Data

Sawadkosin, Paranee January 2019 (has links)
The objective of this Master’s thesis is to find shape optimal design based on min- imizing friction force of thrust bearing by using genetic algorithm(GA) which is one of an optimization toolbox in Matlab. Reducing the friction force of thrust bearing is one way of making shaft to decreasing friction losses. With four parameters of thrust bearing geometry number of segments(m), angle of running surface(), segment inner radius(R0), and segment outer radius(R1) substitute in Reynolds’ equation. In order to know friction force, it is necessary to generate a connecting variable, oil film thickness(h0) from loading capacity(W ) and revolution per minute(rpm). Friction power loss, as well as weight func- tion conclude the final shape optimization of thrust bearing: m = 7, = 0.1, R0 = 15 mm, and R1 = 20 mm.

Mechanical and Tribological Study of a Stimulus Responsive Hydrogel, pNIPAAm, and a Mucinous Glycoprotein, Lubricin

Chang, Debby Pei-Shan January 2009 (has links)
<p>Friction is the resistive force that arises when two contacting surfaces move relative to each other. Frictional interactions are important from both engineering and biological perspectives. In this research I focus on the fundamental understanding of friction on polymeric and biological surfaces in aqueous environments. First, I examine the frictional properties of a stimulus-responsive hydrogel, poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAAm), to understand how different phase states affect its tribological properties. My measurements indicate that gels in a collapsed conformation at low shear rates, exhibit significantly larger friction than swollen gels. These differences arise from changes in surface roughness, adhesive interactions, and chain entanglements of the gel surfaces associated with the phase transition. Importantly, I show that the changes in friction, triggered by an external stimulus, are reversible. </p><p>Second, I examine details of the boundary lubrication mechanism involved in mediating friction and wear in diarthrodial joints. Specifically, I looked at the constituents of the synovial fluid, lubricin and hyaluronic acid (HA) and examined their interactions on model substrates, (1) to determine the effect of surface chemistry on adsorption using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and (2) to study normal force interactions between these surfaces using colloidal probe microscopy (CPM). I found that lubricin is highly surface-active, adsorbed strongly onto hydrophobic, hydrophilic and also collagen surfaces. Overall, lubricin develops strong repulsive interactions. This behavior is in contrast to that of HA, which does not adsorb appreciably, nor does it develop significant repulsive interactions. I speculate that in mediating interactions at the cartilage surface, an important role of lubricin is one of providing a protective coating on cartilage surfaces that maintains the contacting surfaces in a sterically repulsive state.</p> / Dissertation

Komparace učebnic fyziky pro ZŠ / The comparison of physics textbooks for basic schools

BUMBA, Tomáš January 2015 (has links)
The goal of the theses is to determine, which physics textbooks are being used at primary schools, compare these textbooks and analyse the conception and the way various topics are elaborated. Another purpose of the theses is to didactically analyse the theme unit Force in textbooks from various authors and to create a new textbook based on the results and knowledge gained during the comparison. The effectiveness of the elaborated textbook was tested in practice. The textbook is designed as a new, practical conception for the tuition of the theme unit Force and should serve as a practical tool, which is even meant to be used for some of the experiments. It is focused on the most realistic aspect of the topic and works with the pupil´s desire to discover and learn new things. The effectiveness was tested didactically in a primary school class and compared with the results of another class, which used usual textbooks and was taught with usual teaching methods. The response of the pupils on the various methods was also of high importance. The results of the testing can be found at the end of the work.

Modélisation de la lubrification des surfaces texturées. Application à la butée en régime hydrodynamique / Modeling the lubrication effects induced by textured surfaces. Application to the hydrodynamic thrust bearing

Gherca, Andrei 03 October 2013 (has links)
Understanding and modeling a lubricated contact in the presence of surface textures requires a refined physical description in order to comprehend and explain the contradicting results that are currently presented in international literature. An increasing number of theoretical and experimental studies have shown that surface texturing could improve the tribological properties of lubricated or even dry contacts. The load-carrying capacity, the friction coefficient or the wear resistance are the main characteristics that can be improved through texturing. Nevertheless, the lubrication mechanisms that might explain these effects are still the subject of debate within the scientific community. These various contradictions have lead to a significant development of this particular field of research. In this scientific context, the main objective of this thesis is to lead, by means of a thorough numerical and theoretical analysis, towards a better understanding of the physical effects induced by surface texturing in lubricated contacts. The geometrical parameters, which are essential with regard to the generated effects, are submitted to a detailed investigation that also takes into account the influence of the operating conditions (surface speed, viscosity, ambient pressure etc.). The theoretical conclusions obtained throughout this investigation should lead to an improvement in texture design and should allow an optimization of most devices operating in lubricated conditions. Among these various applications, the hydrodynamic thrust bearing has been chosen in order to illustrate the relevance of our findings.

Modeling of Simple Fluids Confined in Slit Nanopores : Transport and Poromechanics / Modélisation de Fluides Simples Confinés dans des Nanopores Lamellaires : Transport et Poromécanique

Hoang, Hai 12 March 2013 (has links)
This work aims at investigating the transport properties and the poromechanics of simple spherical fluids confined in slit nanopores through molecular simulations. To do so, we have proposed different schemes to perform molecular dynamics simulations in ensembles adequate to deal with the properties we were looking after (mass diffusion, shear viscosity, friction force, swelling …). The transport properties of strongly inhomogeneous fluids were found to be varying with space perpendicularly to the solid walls. We have then proposed a non-local approach to determine quantitatively the local shear viscosity of such inhomogeneous fluids from the density profile applicable from the Hard-Sphere to the Lennard-Jones fluids. In addition, it has been shown that highly confined Lennard-Jones fluid may exhibit a visco-plastic (+ shear thinning) behavior when a strong structural order is induced in the whole confined fluid because of the relative position of the solid walls. Finally, it was demonstrated that shear induced modifications of the solvation pressure of a confined fluid may exist that leads to a “dynamic” swelling when a slit micropore is sheared.

Identificação da força de atrito através de análise de sinais não lineares em ensaios tribológicos / Non linear signal analysis applied to friction force identification in tribological tests

Santos, Marcelo Braga dos 11 March 2005 (has links)
Universidade Federal de Uberlândia / When the surfaces of two elastic bodies present relative motions under certain amount of contact pressure the mechanical system can be instable. Experiments conducted on elastic bodies under friction forces shown that the dynamical system is self-excited by the non-linear behavior of frictional forces. The main objectives of this thesis are the study of the pressure and stress fields, due to mechanical contact, and the estimation of friction using the vibrations signals measured on a reciprocating wear testing machine using non-linear signal analysis formulation. The finite element methodology is detailed presented to solve stress fields in contact problems. A two input and one output MISO model is proposed to represent the non-linear system dynamics. The global output is the sum of two outputs produced by one linear path associated in parallel with a non-linear path. This last path has a non-linear model that represents the friction force and another linear transfer function connected in series. Since the linear path is identified by traditional signal analysis, the non-linear function can be evaluated by the global input/output relationships, and can be correlated to wear conditions of the contact surfaces. Validation tests are conducted in a tribological system composed by a sphere in contact with a prismatic body witch has an imposed harmonic motion. The global output force is simultaneously measured by piezoresistive and piezoelectric load cells. The sphere and prismatic body vibrations are measured by accelerometers and by a laser Doppler vibrometer. All signals are digitalized with the same time base and the data is transferred to a microcomputer. The non-linear signal analysis technique uses this data to identify the friction force. The estimated friction force and the stress fields are compared to surfaces of bodies after tribological tests to show the efficiency of proposed methodology.
