MEASUREMENT AND PREDICTION OF LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS BASED ON ATTRIBUTES

Hovatter, Thomas W. 01 January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate any relationship between an established group of senior military officers' leadership styles and their personal values as a predictor of future effective leadership. The study evaluated the relationship between Nelson's (1989) 80-item Personal Values Profile (PVP) and Bass and Avolio's (2004) full-range leadership model (MLQ 5X) as a means to predict effective leadership. The respondents to the surveys were a unique sample of convenience consisting of 1978 graduates of the United States Naval Academy who had spent 30 years as officers in either the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps. The results of the MLQ 5X indicated that the group of career military officers scored higher than Bass and Avolio's normative group in seven of the nine leadership styles and in all three of the leadership outcomes. The two leadership styles in which the career military officers scored lower than the normative group were in the passive-avoidant or non-leadership categories. This sample group scored higher than the normative group in every category of transactional leadership styles as well as in every category of transformational leadership styles. Linear regression analysis of the full-range leadership model against the Personal Values Profile identified a moderate predictor of effective leadership based on personal values when transactional leadership and transformational leadership were combined. A second predictor for effective leadership was found when only transformational leadership was evaluated.

Elasticity of Elasticsearch

Tsaousi, Kleivi Dimitris January 2021 (has links)
Elasticsearch has evolved from an experimental, open-source, NoSQL database for full-text documents to an easily scalable search engine that canhandle a large amount of documents. This evolution has enabled companies todeploy Elasticsearch as an internal search engine for information retrieval (logs, documents, etc.). Later on, it was transformed as a cloud service and the latestdevelopment allows a containerized, serverless deployment of the application, using Docker and Kubernetes. This research examines the behaviour of the system by comparing the length and appearance of single-term and multiple-terms queries, the scaling behaviour and the security of the service. The application is deployed on Google Cloud Platform as a Kubernetes cluster hosting containerized Elasticsearch images that work as databasenodes of a bigger database cluster. As input data, a collection of JSON formatted documents containing the title and abstract of published papersin the field of computer science was used inside a single index. All the plots were extracted using Kibana visualization software. The results showed that multiple-term queries put a bigger stress on thesystem than single-term queries. Also the number of simultaneous users querying in the system is a big factor affecting the behaviour of the system. By scaling up the number of Elasticsearch nodes inside the cluster, indicated that more simultaneous requests could be served by the system.

On the Performance of In-Band Full-Duplex Cooperative Communications

Khafagy, Mohammad Galal 06 1900 (has links)
In-band full-duplex, by which radios may simultaneously transmit and receive over the same channel, has been always considered practically-unfeasible due to the prohibitively strong self-interference. Indeed, a freshly-generated transmit signal power is typically ten orders of magnitude higher than that of a naturally-attenuated received signal. While unable to manage such an overwhelming interference, wireless communications resorted to half-duplex operation, transmitting and receiving over orthogonal channel resources. Recent research has demonstrated the practical feasibility of full-duplexing via successive sophisticated stages of signal suppression/cancellation, bringing this long-held assumption down and reviving the promising full-duplex potentials. Full-duplex relaying (FDR), where intermediate nodes may now support source-destination communication via simultaneous listening/forwarding, represents one of two full-duplex settings currently recommended for deployment in future fifth-generation (5G) systems. Theoretically, it has been widely accepted that FDR potentially doubles the channel capacity when compared to its half-duplex counterpart. Although FDR doubles the multiplexing gain, the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be significantly degraded due to the residual self-interference (RSI) if not properly handled. In this work, efficient protocols are devised for different FDR settings. Selective cooperation is proposed for the canonical three-terminal FDR channel with RSI, which exploits the cooperative diversity offered by the independently fading source/relay message replicas arriving at the destination. Closed-form expressions are derived for the end-to-end SNR cumulative distribution function (CDF) under Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading. Further, the offered diversity gain is presented as a function of the RSI scaling trend with the relay power. We show that the existing diversity problem in simple FDR protocols can be considerably fixed via block transmission with selective cooperation. Beyond the single-relay setting, the outage performance of different opportunistic full-duplex relay selection (FDRS) protocols is also evaluated under Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading. It is shown that, with state-of-the-art adaptive self-interference cancellation techniques, FDRS can offer the same diversity order of its half-duplex rival while supporting a higher level of spectral efficiency. FDRS is also analyzed when adopted by a spectrum-sharing secondary system while the primary spectrum user imposes an additional interference constraint. Finally, buffer-aided hybrid half-/full-duplex cooperation is addressed. To maximize the end-to-end throughput, joint duplexing mode and link selection is studied where the system leverages the buffer and outage state information at the transmitters. All theoretic findings are corroborated with numerical simulations, with comparisons to existing protocols.

Multiscale Seismic Inversion in the Data and Image Domains

Zhang, Sanzong 12 1900 (has links)
I present a general methodology for inverting seismic data in either the data or image domains. It partially overcomes one of the most serious problems with current waveform inversion methods, which is the tendency to converge to models far from the actual one. The key idea is to develop a multiscale misfit function that is composed of both a simplified version of the data and one associated with the complex part of the data. Misfit functions based on simple data are characterized by many fewer local minima so that a gradient optimization method can make quick progress in getting to the general vicinity of the actual model. Once we are near the actual model, we then use the gradient based on the more complex data. Below, we describe two implementations of this multiscale strategy: wave equation traveltime inversion in the data domain and generalized differential semblance optimization in the image domain. • Wave Equation Traveltime Inversion in the Data Domain (WT): The main difficulty with iterative waveform inversion is that it tends to get stuck in local minima associated with the waveform misfit function. To mitigate this problem and avoid the need to fit amplitudes in the data, we present a waveequation method that inverts the traveltimes of reflection events, and so is less prone to the local minima problem. Instead of a waveform misfit function, the penalty function is a crosscorrelation of the downgoing direct wave and the upgoing reflection wave at the trial image point. The time lag which maximizes the crosscorrelation amplitude represents the reflection-traveltime residual that is back-projected along the reflection wavepath to update the velocity. Shot- and angle-domain crosscorrelation functions are introduced to estimate the reflection-traveltime residual by semblance analysis and scanning. In theory, only the traveltime information is inverted and there is no need to precisely fit the amplitudes or assume a high-frequency approximation. Results with both synthetic data and field records reveal both the benefits and limitations of WT. • Generalized Differental Semblance Optimization in the Image Domain (GDSO): We now extend the multiscale physics approach to differential semblance optimization (DSO) in the image domain. That is, we identify the space-lag offset H(x, z, h) in the subsurface-offset domain as an implicit function of velocity. It describes the smoothly varying moveout H(x, z, h) of the migration image m(x, z, h) in the subsurface-offset domain, which is analogous to the smoothly varying traveltime residual ∆τ(x) of a reflection event in a shot gather. The velocity model is found that minimizes the objective function ∑x,z,h H(x, z, h)2m(x, z, h)2, where coherent noise is eliminated everywhere except along the picked curve H(x, z, h). This method is denoted as generalized DSO (GDSO) and mitigates the coherent noise problem with DSO. Numerical examples are presented that empirically demonstrate its effectiveness in providing more accurate velocity models compared to conventional DSO.

Multiple Antennas Systems and Full Duplex Relay Systems with Hardware Impairments: New Performance Limits

Javed, Sidrah 12 1900 (has links)
Next generation of wireless communication mostly relies on multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) configuration and full-duplex relaying to improve data-rates, spectrale efficiency, spatial-multiplexing, quality-of-service and energy-efficiency etc. However, multiple radio frequency (RF) transceivers in MIMO system and multi-hops in relay networks, accumulate transceiver impairments, rendering an unacceptable system performance. Majority of the technical contributions either assume ideal hardware or inappropriately model hardware impairments which often induce misleading results especially for high data-rate communication systems. We propose statistical mathematical modeling of various hardware impairment (HWI) to characterize their deteriorating effects on the information signal. In addition, we model the aggregate HWI as improper Gaussian signaling (IGS), to fully characterize their asymmetric properties and the self-interfering signal attribute under I/Q imbalance. The proposed model encourages to adopt asymmetric transmission scheme, as opposed to traditional symmetric signaling. First, we present statistical baseband equivalent mathematical models for general MIMO system and two special scenarios of receive and transmit diversity systems under HWI. Then, we express their achievable rate under PGS and IGS transmit schemes. Moreover, we tune the IGS statistical characteristics to maximize the achievable rate. We also present optimal beam-forming/pre-coding and receive combiner vector for multiple-input single-output (MISO) and single-input multiple output (SIMO) systems, which lead to SDNR maximization. Moreover, we propose an adaptive scheme to switch between maximal IGS (MIGS) and PGS transmission based on the described conditions to reduce computational overhead. Subsequently, two case studies are presented. 1) Outage analysis has been carried out for SIMO, under transceiver distortion noise, for two diversity combining schemes 2) The benefits of employing IGS is investigated in full duplex relaying (FDR) suffering from two types of interference, the residual self-interference (RSI) and I/Q distortions. We further optimize the pseudo-variance to compensate the interference impact and improve end-to-end achievable rate. Finally, we validate the analytic expressions through simulation results, to quantify the performance degradation in the absence of ideal transceivers and the gain reaped from adopting IGS scheme compared with PGS scheme.

Studium vztahu mezi podmínkami testu FNCT (Full Notched Creep) a rychlostí šíření trhliny SCG (Slow Crack Growth) pro hodnocení odolnosti HDPE vůči růstu trhlin / Study of relation between conditions of the test FNCT (Full Notched Creep) and the rate of crack grow SCG (Slow Crack Growth) for evaluating HDPE cut growth resistance

Porubský, Tomáš January 2015 (has links)
Theoretical part of this thesis presents summary of material and testing parameters which influence SCG and consequently the duration of the FNCT test. The experimental part focuses on modification of testing conditions of FNCT test in order to minimize the test time. FNCT tests were performed for four types of surfactants: Arkopal N110, Sodium dodecylbenzensulfonate (NaDBS), Disponil LDBS55 and Simulsol SL8. The most pronounced accelerating effect was observed for NaDBS surfactant, which in comparsion with commonly used Arkopal N110 doubled the test speed at the same concentration (11 %) and other test conditions. The accelerating effect of NaDBS was also observed for two different PE grades: Liten VB85 and VL 20N. Under the test conditions 80 °C and 4 MPa, 5% NaDBS water solution caused for VL 20N almost 12,5-fold acceleration compared to conventional 2% Arkopal N110 and almost 8,5-fold acceleration for VB 85. The correlation between wettability of surfactant solution and FNCT time to fracture was found.
